Synopsis

Qiao Shao, who worked hard to stay up all night and study, was first in class — if you count from the bottom.

He Shen, who was able to get a perfect score even when he slept all day, in a rare display of kindness, bought a bottle of drink to comfort his stupid seatmate.

Then he saw the messages popping up on Qiao Shao’s phone—

Dad: Don’t panic, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Dad just ordered a new sports car for you.

Granddad: Grandson, there’s no need to hurry. It’s alright even if you didn’t do well in your exam. Granddad bought a new yacht for you, come and take a break.

Grandpa: Grandson, don’t cry, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Grandpa’s billions-worth of properties are all yours.

With a blank expression, He Shen threw his 2.5 Yuan worth bottle of drink into the trash.

Hold your horses! Comfort?

Dirt poor and highly intelligent Gong who left home X underachieving, test-failing, doted on and pampered shou

He Shen X Qiao Shao

Translator’s notes: The title uses the word 学渣 — which literally translates to school and slag. I translated it as ‘underachiever’ but it’s  closer to ‘slacker’. But I didn’t want to use the word slacker because even from the summary we could already tell that Qiao Shao’s a good boy who’s just a little academically challenged.

I love this story because they’re all such good boys and they’re hilarious. =D

  14. Hi! First, thank you for translating this.

And, I also appreciate your translation skills.

I also want to request a permission.

Can I retranslate this novel to my native language (Burmese)?

  15. Ah, where to start with this novel… !!SPOILERS AHEAD!! Main Plot: This story exceeded all of my expectations, honestly. I thought it would just be a simple tale of a boy that tries too hard with little to no luck and a boy that absolutely never tries and has insane luck, but really I found a story about a boy that had so much happen to him yet wanted to heal and a boy that felt cursed because of his rare talent finding someone that doesn’t fear him yet respects him and even grows to love him. They help each other so much and it felt like a light in the darkness as someone that also suffers from depression and anxiety. If you’re looking for a slice of life and a coming of age story, this is 100% for you! Slight trigger warnings if you’re going into this blindly: there are depictions of disassociation, trigger episodes, and abuse. These are all fairly minor but there isn’t much of a warning before hand so be careful if you’re sensitive to it! Despite that, it’s a VERY light read and mostly fluff and even has a happy ending. Main Couple: One boy suffers from intense PTSD due to a traumatic event while the other is an autistic savant (some may disagree with me on this, but most savants are on the autistic spectrum). They both start out misunderstanding one another but eventually grow to rely on one another since they’re the only two people that really understand what the other is going through. Despite their situations, they grow with each other and even save each other from the life they’ve unfortunately been given. The author never sexualizes them as they’re both minors and actually represents them and their mental health and personalities perfectly. They have flaws, they have fears, and most importantly they have respect from the writer. Even the side characters have amazing character growth and personalities and only ever support the main couple. Main Character: He’s absolutely the sweetest character. Going into this novel, I was worried he’d be presented as weak and in need of saving, but he has his own strengths and is actually able to stand on his own as a whole person without the constant need of his love interest. If he ever needs him, it’s as support in his endeavors to heal and grow from his past. When he finds that he actually has a crush on his seatmate, he doesn’t waste one single second. It’s nice to finally have a novel where they don’t waste time getting together. They get to it, communicate, and end up together without the constant “does he?” “does he not?”. There are some misunderstandings there, too, though. They don’t get together till the later chapters, but it’s still satisfying! Love Interest: Despite him being the “god of learning” with a photographic memory (he takes one look at something and automatically remembers it), he has his weaknesses and isn’t constantly portrayed as perfect. He apologizes, he listens attentively, and is genuinely there as a support for the main character. They both have their history that they have to deal with but they genuinely are there for one another. I also LOVE that even though he acts older for his age, he isn’t sexualized for it and the author even reminds us that he’s only a teenager that’s been through thick and thin and acts this way because of that reason. It’s very realistic and I’m glad that he’s portrayed as so and is even able to finally have someone to act his age with. Final Thoughts: I give this book a 9/10. The only reason I deduct points is because this genre sometimes gets one thing absolutely wrong: you cannot be “cured” of mental illness by love, especially PTSD. I do enjoy how the author portrays PTSD and how she thoroughly did her research, but in an attempt to quickly wrap up the novel she ultimately fell into the trope of “he was cured because he fell in love”. It’s not realistic and ultimately a bit problematic, but all in all it was one paragraph and could easily be a mistranslation as this novel has a lot of word specific puns and jokes that can’t be translated easily from Chinese. All in all, the novel did end a little too quickly and some conflicts should have 100% been solved in earlier chapters, irregardless it was a perfect book that I’m glad I read and I hope you give it a shot, too!
