7. You have a typo in “This King Jian, whom he had originally thought had no backer to count on”. It should be “This King Jian, whom he had originally thought to have no backer to count on”, or “This King Jian, who he had originally thought had no backer to count on”.

   • Hmm… I’m not sure I agree that the grammar in the original draft is wrong… could you explain it please?
     • When you join a clause to another by replacing a word with who/whom, it’s “who” when the replaced word is the subject in its clause, and “whom” when the replaced word is an object in its clause. So, when your clause is “King Jian had no backer”, and the replaced word is “King Jian”, it’s “who”, because “King Jian” is the subject in “King Jian had no backer”.

       So: “King Jian had no backer” – “he thought that King Jian had no backer” – “he thought King Jian had no backer” (“that” can be elided here).

       Then, you have “King Jian had actually managed to force a connection”, and want to connect “he thought King Jian had no backer” to “King Jian”. Because “King Jian” is the subject in “King Jian had no backer”, it gets replaced by “who”, not “whom”: “King Jian, who he thought had no backer, had actually managed to force a connection”.

       Another way to look at it is to look at the verbs and then look for their subjects. In “King Jian, whom he thought had no backer, had actually managed to force a connection”, what is the subject of “had no backer”? It’s not “he”, clearly. And “whom” can’t be a subject because it’s an object pronoun. And “king Jian” has its verb in the main clause: “had managed”. Somehow we ended up with a subjectless verb. Clearly something is wrong here. But if you replace “whom” with “who”, everything works fine: “he” thought, “who” had no backer.

11. I feel like it wouldn’t be impossible to figure out that Dan Yi is the “divine chicken” with the amount of information Chen Ziqi has now. Sure you can’t get to bird = human using logical thinking but a human brain can get there just fine.
