Translator's Note

八尺以上 – I’m breaking my standardized units of measurement for this occasion, just to fit the context. While I normally translate 1 尺 as one-third of a meter, this time, I’m using the ancient interpretation of the length of a fully outstretched hand from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the pinky. If it was under normal circumstances, 8 尺 would be nearly nine feet tall. By using handspans, Tianheng is now around six feet tall.

    • maybe its a cultural thing? im not sure if its true, but ive heard that some asian cultures class you as being a year older at the start of the new year rather than on your birthday. if thats true maybe his birthday was around the new year and this celebration is the actual day he was born? and it was celebrated this time due to coming of age? or the author made a mistake… which is more likely i suppose ^.^;

      • true, Koreans and chinese, iirc, are a year older though born in the same yar. I think the day you are born is the day you become 1 and not zero as most would be. So if you are 11 years old, in some asian countries you are 12.

    • nope, he wasn’t yet 20. Although during his test to become an inner disciple, it was said he was about a month or two before the age of 20, which was already a few months ago, but it was never really said, he had his 20th birthday. At least I can’t recall such a matter at the moment.

      • Well it’s true that they never said or celebrated it, but isn’t it logical to already be 20 when that many months passed? Although maybe it is like the commenter above said but i honestly think it’s the author accidentaly messing up the timeline.

        • That wouldn’t be that surprising, considering the length of the novel itself as well as the amount of informations so far.. Let’s just pretend, he really had his 20th birthday just now, celebrated with his coming of age ceremony xD

        • The author definitely messed up the timeline, and it won’t be the first time. For now, you can sort of headcanon it as either Tianheng lying about his age when he reported it to the guy testing for entry to the inner sect, or he’s actually celebrating the birthday a couple of months after the actual date in order to squeeze presents out of as many acquaintances as possible. :p
