  18. Translator, thank you. In your note, you referred to Yu Qinghuan as a ‘son-in-law’. I get so disgusted constantly seeing men referred to as a ‘wife’, ‘daughter-in-law’, ‘sister-in-law’, etcetera. They’re still men, regardless of their ‘position’ in the relationship.

    • Fun fact, sister-in-law is actually a tricky word to translate because the limitation of the term itself. In Chinese, there is no such word as ‘X brother’s husband’, there is only a word for ‘X brother’s wife’. So, see it as Chinese using it as ‘X brother’s spouse’, but as the translator, I have to put an English term to the Chinese term, and because I don’t want to get backlash for changing things (you’ll see why I use ‘son-in-law’ in the future), I keep it as ‘sister-in-law’. Using wife/husband might be a culture thing? So, I’m unable to write up a defense to the usage . I don’t see a lot of ‘daughter-in-law’ in the novels I read either, so I can’t comment on that either.

      • The ones I’ve read refer to their married partners as “daughter-in-law” “wife” “sister-in-law” even if it’s male
