Translator's Note

According to Wikipedia the Hanlin Academy was “an elite group of scholars, who performed secretarial and literary tasks for the court. One of its main duties was to decide on an interpretation of the Chinese classics. This formed the basis of the Imperial examinations, which aspiring bureaucrats had to pass to attain higher level posts”

  1. Thanks for the update~

tho I don’t know who is the ‘old friend’ the author referring on the title, is it Qin Zhaoran or Ma Zhuo?

  2. Poor Qin Zhaoran, there was never likely going to be a future for him with Mu Hanzhang but seeing that he’s happily married, and even to a man, with an intact title and recognition in the court and everything…rough. The perfect happy ending Qin Zhaoran couldn’t have with him. But he’s definitely the careful type above all else, and since Jing Shao didn’t know him we can assume that even in the case of Mu Hanzhang suffering as Jing Shao’s husband he never reached out to him. Choosing your career is choosing your career, at least he can be happy for Mu Hanzhang’s success instead of turning a blind eye to his suffering. Pretty sweet that he remembered the indigo ink, though, as past friends go he’s fairly qualified. (And maybe he did reach out to Mu Hanzhang in the previous life, but Very Subtly or while Jing Shao was away—Jing Shao’s hardly the type to pay a lot of attention to that anyway. It’d be nice if in the past version of events Mu Hanzhang hadn’t been completely alone)

Thank you so much for translating! <3

      • Yeah, had a feeling Jing Shao already suspected it with the restaurant and banquet’s stares. Last life, I am afraid Qin Zhaoran might have accepted Jing Yu’s offer (to drag Jing Shao’s down) but miscalculated Jun Qing’s loyalty thus indirectly had a hand Jun Qing’s death. Maybe that is why this life he is staying away feeling complicated of the pair obvious and loud love.

        • Ooh, that would be really interesting. Especially if he’s also reborn, or is the reason for Jing Shao’s rebirth, as a sign of his regret… Mu Hanzhang’s loyalty wasn’t exactly earned in the past life, so it would make sense to miscalculate about its existence. But he really is that unwavering, so dragging his estate down was never going to work

  3. ohh i wonder whats going on with sao-zi. she was absent from the get-together due to “having to do stuff” and now she supposedly isnt feeling well…? maybe shes pregnant!

    • Or maybe Jing Chen is preparing her withdrawal as a first wife? He prepares his path to obtain the throne and he knows that she is not very capable when it comes to schemes and political intelligence. I hope he will not kill her, but he can make her retire because of some big disease or invent some big crime that she would have committed.

      • I think so! Or maybe jing chen’s wife is sick for real (with no intrigue) just for the sake of jing chen getting a new wife🥲🤣, especially with the emergence of this new character ma zhuo, who was also revelead to be an old “friend”

  4. The political aspects are getting thicker! Hahaha poor Jing Shao, now his wang fei can’t help getting roped into the works too. Less time for his nonsense 😂.

And it seems Jun Qing finally felt vaguely aware of Qin Zhaoran’s unusually attentiveness towards himself.
