A Side Consort is a wife who has a higher status than a concubine, but a lower status than the principal wife. More on this in the main text below.

  1. Oh that scheming dad 😒 … What’s he’s upto this time? 🙄

Well actually Luo Jing too have that scheming traits 🤭 but fortunately his personality is not stinking as of his dad’s. He schemes against bad guys and against his husband in bed 😋😂

Thank you for the chapter 💖

    • This is exactly what I thought! However, I cannot wait to see the reaction of the wife, when she will discover that her maid will become the side consort of her husband… XD (I suppose that he is speaking about the maid he got infatuated with during his wife’s pregnancy, because otherwise, it would mean that he had a 3rd woman in his bed during the mourning period and THAT would be too much)

  2. Thank you for the chapter! As I have already said, this story is translated so fast, it is amazing! We get a new chapter every 2 or 3 days 🙂 Just a little question for our amazing translator: are you a native Chinese speaker or, if you are not, how long have you been studying this language? It has been 2 years (2h of course per week) and I am still struggling to remember 500 Chinese characters correctly… I wonder when I will be able to read a book ^^ Thank you in advance for your answer

      • The next chapter proves that you were right 😉 I forgot that a Side Consort cannot be a simple maid… I still think that Lou Jianyu is incredible: he makes a children with his wife during the mourning period, he beats his own son and only heir to force him to marry the Crown Prince and, now, he takes a Side Consort… He is so irksome! He cannot do something right for once?

    • You’re most welcome! Umm… I am sort of a native speaker?! I’ve learnt the language since preschool because it was mandatory for me to learn Chinese where I’m from, but my parents don’t speak the language, so I was basically tutored to death since I was five. 😂 I stopped formally learning the language when I was sixteen though, because (to my own surprise and my teacher’s amazement) I scored well enough in the exams to qualify for an exemption after that. As to when you can start reading books… eh tbh I couldn’t read Chinese books initially either. I started with manhua, and even that was a struggle for me cause my Chinese was really quite bad. I suggest you start with manhua first – my very first manhua was 通灵妃, which is a very cute hetero story. I couldn’t even manage the more wordy manhua at the start (an example is 帝王侧). But after a year of reading manhua, I suddenly found that I could read even the wordier manhua, and what finally got me to try reading an actual Chinese novel was Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official’s Blessing). 😀 TBH I found Chinese very difficult to learn even though I started as a very young child, so kudos to you for learning it voluntarily! 加油!You can do it! 😘
      • Thanks for your answer! Omg, Chinese as a mandatory language to learn? There are just so many complicated characters to learn that I am thankful it did not happen to me ^^ Studying it by pleasure is already stressful enough, I would not want to be marked by a teacher during my school years…

10 years of studying and you still struggled to read a manhua?! I am studying to at least obtain the HSK3 level, it is going to be complicated… I cannot even completely read the names of the manhuas that you quote! 😂 Well, I will try it nonetheless. Results come with efforts and pain 😅

PS: I also read « 妻为上 » on this website, and you posted 14 chapters while I was waiting for the next chapter of this story. I am still amazed 😅 Both of you do an incredible job in translating these stories for us, thank you very much!

        • Hahaha ok maybe I should be a bit more accurate with my learning timeline – I started learning at 5 all the way until 16, and after 16 I basically didn’t touch the language until I graduated from university, because there was really no need for me to use Chinese in my daily life until I started working. Even so it was only for the Chinese-speaking clients, which were a minority for the type of work I do, and I only started making a concerted effort to improve my Chinese in late 2019. At 10/11 years old, I could read novels but I hated it, so I never read Chinese books for fun – it was always books set by the school that we had to write book reviews on as homework. So actually you’re probably kinda halfway there? 😀

If you need any help with Chinese, feel free to dm me on Discord – I can try to help, though I will caveat that I was not considered one of the top students of this language when I was learning it… :p

  3. ‘He took out the three hundred thousand taels of silver notes, then tossed it into the brass stove to burn.’I had to reread this a few times to make sure that he’s not burning the silver taels and instead burn the box. Gdi English

  4. Lou Jing is diligently tying up loose ends in the capital so he can leave. I hope his father’s plan doesn’t involve getting in his way. Or worse, trying marry him off again!

  5. Why do I have a feeling that this stupid father of his will try to have another kid again and then scheme to dispose of Luo Jing? Seriously, my two babies are always faced with so much trouble.
