Story of Another UsCh2 - The Deal

“Augustine!”

The door to the lab suddenly shot open with a loud bang. Startled, Necomir dropped his tools and nearly electrocuted himself as he turned towards the imbeciles disturbing him, his handsome face screwed in irritation. Yod8qK

“Bellona… Chunmi…” Necomir grumbled, glaring at the smug woman sauntering over him with her little sidekick trailing behind coolly.

“Be careful, it’s still on,” Chunmi said as she lifted her hand towards the direction of the tool that Necomir had been holding, her hand glowing blue as she manipulated the tool’s plug out of the socket.

“See, Augustine? Your temper is going to kill you someday,” Bellona teased, enjoying the ugly look on the man’s face.

“I can’t stand you, go away. And stop calling me that. My name is Necomir,” he breathed as he turned his back on the two and continued with his mecha project. He wasn’t even close to them aside from how he had unfortunately been lumped with them into one team for their Ability Enhancement class.  kShdyj

“We heard the Academy was struck with an earthquake yesterday. Those who had arrived for the start of the semester were terrified,” Bellona said as she walked over and leaned against a table, her long flowing blonde hair gently cascading over her shoulders. “Things were also floating around, and they said it almost felt like the Academy was going to be uprooted from the grounds where it stood.”

“So?” Necomir mumbled, deftly handling the motherboard of the mecha.

“Not that, use the other tool,” Chunmi chimed as she pushed her glasses back. “You’re going to break the chip like that.”

“Shut up, I know,” Necomir rolled his eyes and changed his tool.

“Was it Decebal Yan?” Bellona suddenly said.

Necomir paused his motions abruptly upon hearing his name. The academy had not disclosed which of the students was responsible for the incident, so he was hesitant at first before eventually nodding. He figured that it was obvious enough, since Decebal was the only one who had the ability to do that in their generation.

“Wow,” Bellona smiled in amusement, glancing at Chunmi who quietly spared a smirk. “Your rival is finally back after six years. How does it feel?”

“He’s really sick,” Necomir said. “Really sick.” Ihps0r

Bellona tilted her head to the side. “What do you mean by that?”

What should he say? Necomir didn’t actually know what’s going on with Decebal now. When he brought him to the doctor, he quickly left to call for the headmaster, who was the one that has always been responsible for him. Once he got her, Necomir was dismissed and he didn’t know what happened next.

Alright, their fights had been childish and they always wanted to defeat each other so one of them can be the best, but Necomir still found it weird. That one moment he spent with him wasn’t like anything he knew Decebal would do. The Decebal he had grown with was proud and confident, warranted by his overwhelming telekinetic and telepathic abilities as a psychic, even at such a young age. Necomir’s own ability as a clairvoyant plus his eidetic memory cannot even match with him without trying too hard. UNTjaL

The Decebal he saw in that room gave him the feeling that he was vulnerable and someone he needed to protect – all the while the same person made the whole academy shake while objects floated, ironically enough.

“He just didn’t seem to be in his right mind,” Necomir finally said.

“Huh?” Bellona placed her hands on her hips and grinned. “Seem? Are you telling me you were so scared that you didn’t even get to be in the right state of mind to use your freak powers on Decebal to snoop around to see what’s actually happening with him?”

Necomir didn’t say anything as he continued to fumble with his mecha. Bellona was right, he had not been able to see anything with his powers because the situation had shaken him. It might be embarrassing, but it was understandable! Who wouldn’t be shaken when your powerful rival from childhood finally woke up after six long years? Even more so when said rival was so uncharacteristic that he was like a harmless little puppy right in front of him, those soft brown eyes sparkling as Decebal stared at him so affectionately and even dared to call him “Neco”, throwing him off his axis. “What the hell, you’re attaching the wrong part,” Chunmi called out, genuinely worried when she saw Necomir forcing the wrong part through a joint.

Realizing his mistake, Necomir flinched back and quickly changed it, ears a bit red from embarrassment.

“You’re a mess,” Bellona cackled evilly. “Augustine, get your shit back together. If you’re so worried about your old rival coming back to overthrow you, don’t be. You’ve learned and grown so much while he was in a coma. He has a lot of catching up to do.”

That wasn’t even in Necomir’s mind until Bellona mentioned it. He was actually more haunted by that nickname than being overthrown from his ranking. h7bAo0

Neco.

Crap. He liked it so much, but he shouldn’t be! Nicknames are childish and ridiculous, Necomir shouldn’t be so pleased about Decebal giving him one!

A knock suddenly came on the door.

“Necomir? Are you in there?” PBdKV

Before the man in question was about to speak, Bellona yelled, “Just get in, Akhenaten!”

With a swing of the door, in came the fourth member of their team. Akhenaten looked tired, probably just arrived like the others but even more recently.

“You’re back,” Bellona grinned as she crushed him into a hug. “You grew even taller!”

“Go away,” Akhenaten groaned as he sagged weakly against her. DM RV5

“Nice to see you again,” Chunmi called out, earning a pat on the head from him.

“I just came back a minute ago from my homeplanet and I really need to catch some sleep before I pass out, but Headmaster Juno told me to bring Necomir to her office,” Akhenaten spoke, a bit breathless.

“Hurry up and go before Akhenaten passes out,” Bellona chided Necomir, who didn’t have any sense of pity, actually looking like he still wanted to take his time and question the poor guy.

After sending Akhenaten off since he really did look like he was close to losing consciousness, Necomir headed to the headmaster’s office on his own. The academy was sprawling over acres of land, but there were chutes that helped in making travel easy, so it didn’t take him too long. uYynV6

“Mr. Aquila, thank you for coming. Please take a seat,” Headmaster Juno greeted him when Necomir finally arrived a few minutes later. The woman wore a lab coat and might have just left from her own lab to quickly meet with him.

“What did you call me for?” Necomir politely asked as he plopped down on one of the chairs in front of her desk.

The headmaster brought her hands together and smiled. Necomir was stunned, realizing that it was his first time to see her smiling so widely. She’s a good headmaster but was always gloomy and grim, so seeing her smile with her white teeth out was quite an unusual experience.

“You already know that Decebal has finally woken up,” she said. “I need to thank you again for being the first person to respond to him.” 4LfedY

“It’s no problem,” Necomir nodded. “I sensed the whole thing before anyone did, so I rushed over quickly.”

“Very responsible,” Headmaster Juno nodded. “You are brilliant and talented, you have a long way to go.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Hearing compliments was good, but Necomir knew the headmaster didn’t just call him to praise him.

“What do you need me for, Headmaster?” he cautiously asked, wanting her to get to the point. 54sGWu

“Well… You see,” Headmaster Juno leaned forward, her face actually flashing a hint of worry. “Ever since Decebal woke up, it’s clear that he wasn’t the person we used to know. After all, a brain injury plus his developing body would eventually heal and eradicate any trauma within his system. In his current state, he’s a new slate. I need someone to guide him, since I can’t always be here.”

“So…” Necomir scratched his temple uncertainly. “You want me to do it?”

“Yes,” the headmaster nodded. “I know it seems strange because you and Decebal haven’t been on good terms since your childhood, but he’s been looking for you since he woke up. I think he remembers you because he’s been involved with you for most of his waking life and you’re sort of a constant in his life before.”

Upon hearing this, Necomir was suddenly struck by a warm feeling.  48zbWe

It’s pathetic.

He’s been so deprived of affection that the minimum implication from it from anyone, even his old rival, actually made him feel so damn pleased with himself!

“Of course, I’ll promise something for you in exchange,” Headmaster Juno quickly said when she detected the hesitance in Necomir’s countenance.

He wasn’t used to getting anything he wanted for something as ridiculous as taking care of someone instead of obtaining it through his talent and ability, so he was prepared to just suck it up and tell the headmaster that it was okay. It’s not like Decebal was a toddler. He just lost his memories, it didn’t seem like his brain was dysfunctional. He definitely didn’t need a reward from the headmaster in exchange from just leading him around campus or something. Mnw4vH

But Headmaster Juno was quick and beat him to it. “If you help Decebal, I’ll make sure that when you graduate, you will be secured a high position in the Ministry of Science and Advancement. Lots of people are just as skilled as you, so this opportunity is actually very rare.”

Necomir felt dizzy from the offer. She was right, it would definitely be hard to get a relevant position in the Ministry of Science and Advancement. For Necomir who wanted this exact career path after graduation, he couldn’t see anything bad about this offer anymore.

“Okay, I’ll do it,” he immediately said, very certain of his decision.

Headmaster Juno sat back, looking relieved. s8A5DX

“Thank you so much, Mr. Aquila.”
