Story of Another UsCh1 - A New World

The Eastern Earth Base was always very bleak and cold at night. The base shuts down the power source by nine to conserve energy, and while that usually meant it’s curfew and everyone needs to be in their living quarters by that time, workers and college students like Sebi Yan still come home late.

It’s not like Sebi wanted to go home at such an ungodly hour, especially when it’s so dark and scary outside. He was a freshman at the base university majoring in anthropology, and as the end of the academic year came closer and closer, even more and more work was piled up for him. He spent his days at the college, attending lectures and conducting his research then barely eating in between. If only there was lodging there, Sebi would have chosen to just live on campus. 0bpF26

But that wasn’t the case, so Sebi had to board the train with just a handful of people then stumble his way to his living quarters, in an apartment at a miserably desolate spot in the living space of the base. Today, he left university later than usual because of a consultation with his professors, thus he wasn’t able to seek solace in the company of the wave of latecomers he often walked with.

Nervously, Sebi fumbled with the edge of his uniform while singing a popular nursery rhyme under his breath as he hurried his way down the pavement. He wasn’t even looking at where he was going, just simply bringing his feet to hasten their pace so he can make it to his quarters quicker.

Sebi was used to this, but tonight, his gut instinct was sending his body into an unprecedented state of fear. He didn’t know why – was it because of this irrational fear of darkness humans developed over the centuries, or was it because of something else?

Whatever it was, Sebi didn’t want to stick around to find out what it was. He already had dinner, so he just needed to hurry home then study a bit before going to bed. He needed to rise up early tomorrow because he had a test and he didn’t want to miss it and suffer because of the traffic. 8 ydnO

Thinking about the test didn’t bring Sebi any kind of feelings of helplessness. He was very passionate about his major and didn’t find it boring. The human race had suffered through so many ordeals for the past centuries – from alien invasions to climate change then a radioactive meteorite shower – all of which pushed them into these bases around the globe where they have come together to recuperate and protect each other.

With his major, Sebi got to study the past of the human race and uncover artifacts that they may use to inspire humanity into obtaining full recuperation and eventually, advancement that will help them populate the whole planet again and maybe even reach further into the stars.

Just like that, Sebi was able to push away the bad feelings brewing inside his chest. He was already close to his apartment, there’s just another street left. It will just be a very quick trek that before he will even notice it, he’ll finally be in his desk poring over his review sheets.

Thump.

ikaF0U

It was such a soft sound, Sebi definitely missed it.

But he did feel it.

Cold and bitingly chilly, numbing, right in Sebi’s core from behind him. The knife was so thin and sharp that the sound of flesh breaking was never heard at all.

“Quickly, take his backpack! Get his ID!” MhbgNU

“Where will we hide his body?”

“In that dumpster over there! Hurry, there’s a sentinel around the corner!”

He was just an orphan, with a scholarship from the kind headmaster who saw his potential. He didn’t have much… TjoZcI

‘I’m dying…’ Sebi thought, a bit confused. ‘Will it end just like this?’

Death was quick and unforgiving yet so merciful, it didn’t hurt Sebi at all.

One moment he was bleeding in the dark, then the next moment, he found his consciousness – or his soul, he wasn’t sure – drifting away. He even doubted that death had come to claim him with its fabled taloned iron grip, because he just found out that death actually had gentle hands. It carried him away, up into the night sky towards the stars.

‘Where am I going?’ Sebi was nervous as his soul drifted through time and space. Nnjq1Q

A face appeared in front of him.

“Don’t be afraid, Sebi. I’m here.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Oh, it’s Neco.

Sebi saw his best friend. He was brave, bold, caring, thoughtful, and very smart. Sebi cherished him more than anything in the world. Even with an illness that ruined his body, he still became the person Sebi admired the most. sYqc7j

When they were sixteen, Neco finally succumbed to his illness that damaged his heart. Sebi was so devastated as all he could do was accompany him every day by his hospital bed while his days dwindle down.

Pale and gaunt with no energy left in his youthful body, yet Neco still managed to comfort Sebi with his dying breath.

“Don’t be afraid, Sebi. I’m here.”

His death had left a deep hole in Sebi’s heart, but now that he knew death wasn’t as bad as history made it out to be, he was comforted. He knew Neco was out there, happy and cheerful in a place where nothing could hurt him anymore. It was enough for him to die peacefully. rEMvUm

But the universe had other intentions.

Sebi’s soul had been idly floating for some unknown span of time. It came as a shock when he suddenly felt like he was being pulled under then forcefully slammed into something.

It was like falling and plunging into water.

Water. SdvQYs

The next time Sebi woke up, he found himself literally submerged into water, his sight tinted a vibrant blue. He felt solid this time, rooted to the world as he floated within what he could discern was a cylindrical container. It was familiar, like those huge experimental cylinders that can contain alien life form in those research labs in the science department back at the base university…

Sebi made a horrible realization.

Was he also trapped as an experiment?!

The thought quickly sent him in a rush of panic as he slammed his fists against the glass. Sebi’s heart rate was picking up and he couldn’t make sense of his surroundings well as he was overcome by anxiety. The world didn’t make any sense in the first place, so all he knew was that he needed to get out quickly and escape. huUHTW

Unbeknownst to him, Sebi had been thrusted into an alternate universe completely different from his original. In this world, humans have reached the stars. They left Earth after an asteroid came to destroy most of the landmass. Now, they have conquered the Terra Star System, a system still within the Milky Way Galaxy abundant with planets much like Earth. Evolution also came, in which the human population began to form resilient body structures while half more developed special abilities.

Due to his fright, Sebi’s own dormant powers had been activated again in a terrifying magnitude. His environment began to shake violently, sounds of furniture and material objects banging and clanging with each other as they levitated from the ground.

This continued on as Sebi finally broke his way out of the glass. The vibrations helped, but his fists still bore the injury and they bled as the liquid leaked out and Sebi fell to the cold ground.

The door suddenly shot open and in came a man who rushed towards Sebi’s miserable body on the floor. The appearance of another person immediately alarmed him, so he quickly tried to push himself up to his feet and make a dash for it. It was impossible though, as the world continued to shake and Sebi was unstable inside this new body. CSLIxe

But he wanted to run, especially when the man caught up and held him. Sebi was freaking out, so he thrashed about and yelled, trying to escape.

“Decebal, calm down! It’s me!”

That voice.

He heard that voice again, but more physical now rather than just in his memories. Sebi could never get wrong recognizing this voice. Deep and smooth, like those rare delicacies called chocolate that Sebi could only get as a gift from the adults who took care of him. 2O7Xwf

Sebi went rigid as he looked up and met a pair of striking golden eyes. He gasped, suddenly reaching up and cupping the other’s face.

“Neco!” he cried out happily, his eyes starting to water.

The other man was named Necomir, but he was confused to hear his old rival wake up after so many years and suddenly call him by an endearing nickname with such a cheerful voice. It was disorienting and made him feel a bit lightheaded, but Necomir couldn’t say anything else and just nodded, afraid that if he aggravated Sebi, then the tremors would worsen and he might even uproot the whole Academy from where it stood.

“Yes,” Necomir spoke, reaching up to awkwardly pat his head. “Now you should calm down. We’ll let the doctor see if you are alright.” zMfBXC

“It’s a weird world…” Sebi muttered, holding on to the other man’s shoulders. “Why is it suddenly shaking?”

“Decebal, have you forgotten? It’s your powers,” Necomir calmly said before he gasped softly, seemingly realizing something. “The doctor did mention you might lose some of your memories…”

Sebi frowned upon hearing Necomir addressing him with his full name, but he didn’t bother much with it. He was more preoccupied by the sudden influx of thoughts into his mind. It was like oil being poured into a glass filled with water, he knew it wasn’t his.

“Decebal’s powers have been dormant for so long that it’s overflowing…” v3YCUH

“He’s acting a bit strange.”

“Is Decebal still sick…? I really need to get him to a doctor. He even injured himself… It would be bad if this overflow will worsen his condition.”

Sebi realized these were Necomir’s thoughts, showing concern for him despite how he can detect that he wasn’t very open to him. This must be his powers manifesting, but Sebi didn’t have time to ponder over this as the fact that he was sick made him worry more.

“Will I die again?” Sebi nervously muttered under his breath, fiddling with his fingers as he began to sweat. Death was not painful, but he didn’t want to experience it again. iaOJCd

Especially when he was given a chance to wake up in a world where Necomir was alive.

It took a while of comforting, but Sebi finally managed to calm down and stop making everything rumble and crash. Necomir was then able to carry him up and bring him to the doctor’s clinic just next door.

By the time Necomir laid him on the bed, the adrenaline fully subsided and Sebi felt the energy drain out of him, rendering him unconscious.
