Though still adjusting, Jin Xiyan had been treated with great respect since his arrival at the camp three weeks ago. The paper shook in his hands the more he re-read the note until finally he crumpled it between them. He held the wadded up piece of paper in his lap, struggling to collect his thoughts. During his time in the camp, he was given more freedom than he could imagine. Even if one could dismiss it because of his status as a Prince, it was undeniable that the omegas in the camp were self-sufficient and strong. Her expression changed at his question and her brows rose high. Blinking, she answered, “Uh…My King does not have any Wives.”
Jin Xiyan internally sighed, relieved at that information. Feeling his spirits lift, he lightened his tone. “Do you know where your King is right now?”
“He is likely discussing with his advisors the notices he received.” If Shen Pei was suspicious, she didn’t reveal it. “He will not be free until this evening, when it is dinner time.”

Jin Xiyan managed to convince Su Ao that he was alright and he did not need to be accompanied for an evening “walk.” He stood outside the tent flap, battling himself over whether to do this or not. Earlier he felt so sure, but when faced with the possibility of embarrassing himself – or worse, offending a man in his own territory – Jin Xiyan now hesitated.
This is the only way. You cannot know until you try. If anything, maybe he can help me hide somewhere else…After a deep breath, he reached out to the seam of the entrance with a shaking hand.

Inside it was brightly lit and pleasantly warm from the lit golden braziers and the herbal incense in the air. It wasn’t until then that he realized how chilly it was outside. Jin Xiyan rubbed his hands together and stepped further inside.
Li Changyu was leisurely draped across his long bench again, his table laden with wine, a half eaten pile of cut up lamb, and a bowl of what looked to be rice porridge that he spooned into his mouth. His eyes were on Jin Xiyan though, piercing him with an intense gaze that was softened by the mischievous smirk on the corner of his lips. He slurped loudly and dropped the spoon back into the bowl.
“I hope I am not disturbing you, Your…um…” He licked his lips, “Shen Pei never told me how to address you.”
“You don’t have to. I am not your King.” The bowl clinked when he rested it back on the table.
“Then what do I call you?”
“Just Li Changyu.”
Jin Xiyan tested the name again on his lips, “Li Changyu…”
“As for disturbing me,” Li Changyu stretched his arms up high and rolled his shoulders. They came down as he slumped back. “You could hardly bother me. I should be thanking you, your letters worked.”
He waved to the casual pile of scrolls near his feet. Some were open and others haphazardly stacked on one another. Jin Xiyan was tempted to tidy them, especially since they looked like important documents. He put his hands behind his back instead and twisted the hem of his sleeves between his index finger and thumb.
“What brings you here?” Li Changyu tilted his head and peered around Jin Xiyan. “Without your Keeper, too.”
Jin Xiyan forced himself to speak before his mouth went completely dry, “This one…has something important to discuss with you.”

Like this, they were almost at equal height from how low the chair sat. Jin Xiyan kept his eyes down as he spoke.
“I…I received a letter from m-my Emperor Father,” he began, his voice only breaking just a little. “When you took me, I was on my way to be married. He is demanding for my return because I am still engaged and he wants to see this marriage through.”
For once, Li Changyu’s expression turned serious. “You did not tell me that when you learned I could speak your language. Why?”
His heart began to thud hard against his chest. Why, indeed? He could tell himself that he wanted to avoid being ransomed after sharing that he was a Prince and to be wed to a wealthy Kingdom. However, he could not deny that a tiny part of himself was actually happy that he had been taken. He didn’t have to confront his disdain for the marriage arrangement, and he could blame someone else for turning his life around rather than shouldering the responsibility or blame himself. It caught up to him, and now he had to make a choice.
“I do not…I do not wish to be married, and I can only think of one thing to break off the engagement.” Jin Xiyan shut his eyes, unwilling to see Li Changyu’s face when he reacted to his words. “Please, let me share your bed tonight.”

He needed Li Changyu to believe him, and to help him in this way. Swallowing down his pride, he said, “Li Changyu…p-please give me…please give me your knot.”
A corner of Li Changyu’s lip twitched, but something dark fell over his eyes. He let go of Jin Xiyan’s hair and walked away a few steps before stopping. With his back turned to him, Jin Xiyan couldn’t see the expression on Li Changyu’s face any longer.
