  5. as a gay person myself it makes me feel some type of way for the story to insist he’s not ashamed of his sexuality but then feel like huo qu being gay would somehow ruin him. it’s understandable to feel worried about how being gay might negatively impact him due to living in a homophobic society but it kind of upsets me that’s he denies huo qus agency to decide for himself what’s good for him and how he feels. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way he feels and the only reason i could think of for this kind of reaction is internalized homophobia :/ thank you for the chapter, i hope it gets cleared up soon
    • From my perspective, I was not particularly surprised.

      In an ideal society, parents are parents to not only their kids, but to other kids they encounter as well. Unfortunately, most parents aren’t good parents to their kids talk less of another’s.It has been reiterated constantly that YQH was an orphan and I can bet you that at some point in his life, he was accused of something another kid did just because they assumed that being an orphan=no discipline (which is grossly false).

      Coincidentally, someone told me in confidence that when he was younger, he was falsely accused by the parent of an ex-friend because they thought he was the one that made [him] start smoking, when the guy had been doing it long before they became friends. If something like this can happen with smoking, why not with a disgruntled parent accusing YQH of “turning” their kid gay because he was gay? These stuff stick with you for life

      • Yeah, he knows there’s no reason to be ashamed but you can bet no matter how well intentioned the people around him were, they would have made the kind of comments about gay people that a child internalises. A part of you knows there’s nothing wrong but you’re also very much aware of how people will see you and how being known as gay could make your live harder in certain circles (like among traditionalist academics).

        The author showed an example in the situation with Qinyuan, as long as it’s just rumours people will go along with it for giggles but as soon as it seems to be the truth most of them will have a change of face. Illogical and stupid? Very much so, but that’s just how some people are.
