Free Ren YiguCh14 - Extra (2) Xue Yaozu’s past

And so, Xue Yaozu was tugged across the suspension bridge by Ren Yigu.

After crossing the bridge, Ren Yigu didn’t say anything else. Then, he looked at his watch, said bye and hurriedly rushed onward to meet up with friends.    OXSr s

And that was that.

One day, as Xue Yaozu was taking advantage of class time to do homework, a voice beside him suddenly sounded, “That question that you did is wrong, isn’t it?”

He turned and looked. Ren Yigu was hanging onto the window frame of the window in the hall. He was pointing at his homework saying, “You wrote the wrong factor.”

Xue Yaozu silently stared at him, without moving or saying anything.

Ren Yigu smiled at him again and said, “Sorry, I just happened to see.”

Ren Yigu didn’t continue paying him any attention, and hollered at another classmate inside the classroom. “Zhang Qiang! Come out for a sec, are the gym’s storage keys on you?” avUFZt

Xue Yaozu redid that question. When he finished he turned around to look at the hallway outside the window. Ren Yigu was saying something to Zhang Qiang, and had his arm around Zhang Qiang’s shoulders. As he talked he laughed, that type of laugh that was super unrestrained and joyful.

He found that Ren Yigu loved to laugh, and it was the type of laugh that had no trace of care in upholding an image.  CjdxXc

But then he would look at himself in the mirror, where even the visible half of his face was super abstract, and immediately wake up.  VSfbMN

It wasn’t as if Ren Yigu was a part of the poverty alleviation office.

The school has a pretty old event: forming partners. They’d pair up students with opposite grades, personalities or economic situations, in order to balance and complement each other. spUR4e

Of course, it wasn’t like this event hadn’t had any problems before. One problematic instance was actually caused by that Yu Shihua from a few years before. His homeroom teacher, at the time, had adamantly refused to give up on him, so he’d paired him off with the student ranked at first place in their grade: Du Qingrong. Du Qingrong was great! Apparently his family was a single-parent household; his father was crippled and was a gardener for a rich family. They lived with great difficulty. One time when a teacher had phoned their house they’d heard one of the rich family members insulting Du Qingrong. They were way too wicked! Just listening made one want to cry. But Du Qingrong was very hardworking, impassioned, serious and level headed, yet also lively and active. He even featured in the local student recognition awards list! What a tremendously stupendously outstanding student! If Yu Shihua could just take on a bit of that saintly aura, then he’d have a chance of being saved.

After that, it was unclear what exactly happened, but Yu Shihua came to school wrapped in bandages. When asked, he said that he’d accidentally tripped over his slippers in the middle of the night and fallen.

Who the hell’d believe that?

Everyone started spreading around that Yu Shihua had had impure motives and tried to do something bad, but had gotten a dose of his own medicine.

The teachers were all scared to death, and called Du Qingrong to their offices three times a day, so that they could try and get the truth to what had happened out of him subtly. They were afraid that he’d been frightened or hurt. But Du Qingrong was still so nice, polite and obedient. He subtly expressed that he’d like to not have to come into contact with Yu Shihua again.

After that, the teachers completely changed the class schedules. The two of their classes didn’t even have P.E. classes in the same period anymore.

This is all conjecture though.  q9UWe3

The school didn’t give up and continued operating the pairs exchange program.

The students also really liked this program because, at this age, it was pretty rare for there to still be such a large-scale officially organized friend making event. The only unfortunate part is that the school didn’t allow co-ed pairings, otherwise the event would become a huge blind dating event.

Translator's Note

走道窗户口趴着=that kind of big window that chinese and japanese classrooms have, where you can do this

Translator's Note

Callback time! This is the same Zhang Qiang from the first chapter that RYG used as a fake name when XYZ asked him what his name was

Translator's Note

烂漫 again

Translator's Note

偶像包袱=idol packaging/rep, talking about the tendency for celebs/idols to act in a certain way to ‘preserve their celebrity image’ such as not doing scenes where they actually look poor/dirty/ugly/etc and instead still look fabulous and have exactly 3 specs of dirt on their face and 2 tufts of hair ‘artfully disheveled’

Of course, this doesn’t only apply to idols or celebs, the phrase just originated from describing them

Translator's Note

A governmental charity

Translator's Note

The MC of that other novel by the author of FRYG that I mentioned last chapter, the one that would have the title, ‘Apart from me, anyone who isn’t a spy is gay’

Translator's Note

委婉地表达=expressed in a roundabout manner

Translator's Note

相亲=the term for the marriage meeting that I mentioned in the chapter where RYG’s friend asked him out to help him pick out clothes for the marriage interview. I decided to use blind date here instead, since it makes sense and it fits better for a bunch of middle schoolers
