Zhou Yilu really wanted to flip a table.

And how could Song Fei be doing any better. They could be the pothos of the motherland, but the pothos also needed to be watered. Being kaka gnawed on over here, and huhu blown on by smog over there, even plastic flowers wouldn’t be able to hold on, ah!

Qi Yan quietly looked outside the window for a long while, then suddenly said, “Actually, this is a good thing. If there’s smog, then that means there’s still human activity, and it’s even possible that parts of the industrial sector are continuing normal operations. This proves that our speculations were correct about there being forces protecting the relevant facilities in the city based on the water and electricity still functioning.”

The three people felt that these words were like a fairy tale. But, after careful consideration, they did seem to be irrefutable. wJe75W

They’d never thought that one day, they’d be drawing strength from the smog. This truly gave them a complicated feeling.

“Then, when will these forces come to save us?” Right now, Qiao Siqi really wished he were a power plant. As long as he was given sufficient protection and love, he’d definitely generate electricity properly.

Song Fei raised his head and looked outside, as though there was a bright future concealed within the gray fog: “They’ll definitely come, so we have to stick it out until then.”

It’d definitely be inconvenient for them to break out when they wouldn’t even be able to see their own hands in front of their faces, so their plan to head for the supermarket was temporarily shelved. Actually, it couldn’t be considered shelving, because they hadn’t planned on leaving this early to begin with, wanting to find as many companions as possible.

bqheEN

In the smog, the 440 balcony.

Zhou Yilu strummed out chords on his guitar at a faster tempo, intending to rouse any ears through the mist.

When the notes dissipated, Song Fei brought a rolled up book that constituted a loudspeaker to his mouth, and began to call out: “Attention all students, attention all students. The dormitories have now become an isolated island, ammunition spent and food running low. The only way out is to break through this encirclement. All of Building 2 Room 440 will initiate a breakout later today. The target, the supermarket, with the smog as the sign, setting off the instant the smog disperses. If there are like-minded students, all are welcome, the more the better! Ready— start!”

Zhou Yilu, Qiao Siqi: “A single bamboo pole ye~~
Qi Yan: “Ho hei ho.”
Zhou Yilu, Qiao Siqi: “It’s hard to cross the ocean~~”
Qi Yan: “Ho hei ho.”
Zhou Yili, Qiao Siqi: “Everyone paddling together yo~~”
Qi Yan: “Ho hei ho.”
Zhou Yilu, Qiao Siqi: “A galleon can set sail~~”
Qi Yan: “Ho… f*ck, who the hell threw a shoe!” vDrKVu

Thanks to Song Fei, Qi Yan-tongxue had been smacked in the face with a shoe for the very first time in his life.

Qi Yan: “I told you that it wouldn’t work!”

Song Fei: “It’s you guys who aren’t singing it with enough passion!”

Qiao Siqi: “Your call was like the police telling some criminals to release the hostages at once, then come out with their hands up. Who’d even respond?” Q6Ah4o

Zhou Yilu was holding on to the guitar, and said after a moment of contemplation, “In my opinion, we should just forget it, ba. This kind of thing is clearly fraught with danger, and no one will be willing to take any risks unless they’re driven to desperation.”

The ever prudent Qi Yan couldn’t understand: “If this still isn’t a desperate situation, then what is?”

Song Fei thought about it very seriously, then thought it probably was: “Being kabedon-ed by a zombie.”

The four of them stopped wasting their energy, and started to pack up their things. Song Fei himself had a backpack, while Qi Yan had brought back three of them when he was out searching for food, just that there were very few useful things to pack right now. Let alone four bags, they might not be able to fill up even one of them. nB37lM

Flashlight, immersion heater, phone charger, wallet, key, chocolates. These six things didn’t even occupy one-third of a backpack. Song Fei hung the bike lock around his own neck with deep satisfaction, then looked into the opened closet, lost in thought.

“Bring it.” As if he knew exactly what he was thinking about, Qi Yan suddenly said this.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Song Fei looked at him: “Are you sure?”

Qiao Siqi was appalled: “I don’t like the sound of being stuck in a green belt…”

Complaining was one thing, but the four of them still turned the 440 wardrobe upside down. The last thin, short down jacket, a sportswear set, two sets of thermal tops and bottoms, a gray cotton jacket, a wool sweater, and a pair of fleece-lined sweatpants were evenly distributed and stuffed into their respective backpacks.

After they finished packing up, the smog was still there.

Song Fei’s stomach had already begun to gurgle, but there was nothing that could done about it, so he could only pass the time by playing some little games on his phone that didn’t require the Internet. But, it didn’t take long for it to feel dry and dull, and Song Fei looked at the ever nonpresent signal that’d been spirited away, and suddenly whispered: “I wonder how my family’s doing right now…” 8xnyRP

As soon as these words came out, the atmosphere inside suddenly became heavy.

The four of their families were all in other provinces. Ever since things had gone awry, they hadn’t had the opportunity to call home and reassure them they were doing okay, and had no way of knowing what the situation was like for their parents. This was like a huge boulder. No one had mentioned it, but everyone’s hearts could still feel the pressure.

“I’m not sure if the supermarket has a landline, but our phones not having a signal shouldn’t affect the telephone landlines, ba?” Qiao Siqi proposed this possibility.

Zhou Yilu’s eyes lit up: “We’ll have to go there to find out.” lKwI3c

Excellent. Now there was one more reason to brave Fen Duo Duo.

In the end, it was still Song Fei who slapped his thigh, before feeding himself and everyone else a calming pill: “Mom and dad must be fine! We’re all doing okay, so how could the people who made us be having any issues?”

Qi Yan, Qiao Siqi, and Zhou Yilu: “…En!”

This logic, impeccable. 3t6Eks

They’d originally thought that this day was going to end in smoke, with only famine and hunger dogging them like a shadow. Unexpectedly, at 3:30 in the afternoon, the smog actually disappeared. And who knew where this evil wind had come from, as it started gusting hulala, stunning them as it parted the clouds, allowing the sun to shine through.

The four people who’d long been on the edge of their seats made the prompt decision to set off!

After opening the balcony door, the few of them first took a look at the situation at the bottom of the building. Similar to the previous few days, there were many mutants inside the building, but few mutants outside the building. Right now, there were six downstairs sluggishly wandering around aimlessly.

“Later, when we climb down the balcony, remember to keep your actions light. We’re not scared of being slow, just of making sounds. And make sure you have a firm grip. If you feel like you can’t hold on anymore, climb onto a balcony right away to take a break. Absolutely do not force yourself to keep on going.” As a professional balcony climbing athlete, Qi Yan imparted his wisdom, passing down all of his knowledge and experience. PeKoIC

Zhou Yilu reached under the hem of his white short down jacket, feeling for the sushi knife at his waist, nodding vigorously.

Qiao Siqi touched the pocket of his own trendy cotton streetwear clothes. Even through the cotton, he could feel the sturdiness of his Swiss army knife: “En.”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Song Fei looked down at the bike lock he’d directly hung around his neck for ease of access, then traced the outline of the Tai Chi fan at his waist through his down jacket, swallowing diffidently.

“Don’t go head-to-head with them. If you can run away then run, with avoiding being bitten by them as the primary goal. When you have no choice but to go at it with them, then send your regards to their heads, as ruthlessly as you can.” Qi Yan said all of this to everyone, but his eyes were on Song Fei. YRAZan

Finally, Song Fei nodded solemnly.

Qi Yan took a deep breath, squeezed the balcony railing, then began to climb down.

The other three immediately followed.

Five minutes later, the three of them had already climbed down to the second floor. The balcony railings were like cold iron in the chilly air. In order to maintain friction, none of them had worn gloves. At this time, their hands were cold, aching, and numb, but no one had the leisure to pay much attention to it. 3Fahbi

Of the six mutants on the ground, one had a broken arm, and one had a mutilated face. Although the remaining four had blood stains on their faces and bodies, they appeared to most likely be from their victims.

The four people were on the fourth balcony on the second floor sequentially. There were already mutants in the first three rooms. Qi Yan had already checked them beforehand, so this could already be considered the place closest to the outside of the dormitories. What they had to do next was wait.

Three of the mutants walked one after another inside the building over there, leaving Broken Arm, Mutilated Face, and one other still wandering in the vicinity. Mutilated Face especially, was basically directly under their feet, just a few steps away in the direction they were facing.

Finally, Broken Arm and the other one also moved slightly further away. JIVR S

But, Mutilated Face still wouldn’t move. Not only was he not moving, but he even seemed to have sensed something, sniffing left and right as he looked about.

Seeing that the three that’d just walked inside the building were about to turn back again, Qi Yan winked at the three of them.

The three people nodded.

Qi Yan delivered a flying dropkick right to the head of the mutilated faced zombie, the latter falling to the ground with a putong. His inertia carrying him forward, Qi Yan landed right on top of him! However, Qi Yan didn’t stop, borrowing the force from his plunge down to roll aside, moving onto the ground in an instant! QWV4d

The mutilated faced zombie released a completely inhuman roar, then got back up and assailed Qi Yan with its mouth wide open!

By now, the other three had already landed on the ground. Zhou Yilu was the fastest, accosting Mutilated Face from behind like a cheetah, and with a flash of white light, directly pierced the back of the opponent’s head with his sushi knife.

As though Mutilated Face’s acupoint had been struck, he stopped moving.

Zhou Yilu had pierced through easily enough, but couldn’t pull it back out again no matter how hard he tried. Qi Yan hurried over to help, one pinning down the zombie, the other tugging at the knife. It practically took the strength of nine bulls and two tigers to finally wrench the knife free. v6ASUe

Darkened blood splattered onto their faces. No matter how high their mental resilience might’ve been, at this moment, they still felt a distinct sense of horror from killing someone. They were still in a trance, when suddenly, they were each hauled separately to the sides by Song Fei and Qiao Siqi! And the instant they were separated, the broken armed zombie pounced onto empty air, right where they’d originally been standing before!

Not just the broken armed zombie, but the other four were also headed their way!

Qi Yan was distracted by the four of them over there, and didn’t notice that the broken armed zombie that’d just missed them was already lunging their way again. By the time he’d noticed, it was already too late, and the broken armed zombie was just about to chomp on his face.

At this critical juncture, a splotch of bright red descended from the sky, like splashed ink. Vyn5cR

Over the course of a single day, Qi Yan had been slapped twice in the face; first with a shoe, and then with a fan.

However, the former was just embarrassing, while the latter was embarrassment infused with a truly wondrous sensation that defied description— the sturdy, but thin red silk could block teeth, but couldn’t block out touch. He could distinctly feel the lips of the broken armed zombie on his face, rubbing, rubbing, just like the devil's footsteps.

Song Fei slammed the broken armed zombie aside, and didn’t bother closing his fan. In accordance with what they’d agreed upon in advance, running away whenever possible, he sprinted towards the outside of the residential area with the scarlet silk material in hand!

Qi Yan immediately followed behind with tacit understanding! bxM4a8

Qiao Siqi and Zhou Yilu had been startled by the scene just now, and it wasn’t until Qi Yan started running, that they quickly came back to their senses. Just when they were about to run off, the broken armed zombie that Song Fei had knocked aside intercepted them!

Qiao Siqi gritted his teeth and shut his eyes, then randomly stabbed out with his small Swiss army knife, actually jabbing it right into one of the broken armed zombie’s eyes!

The zombie howled, and when Qiao Siqi reopened his eyes, he was almost scared silly by the horrible sight in front of him, while the other party had just paused momentarily, before swooping right over again!

In a predicament, Qiao Siqi had thought that he was bound to die, when Zhou Yilu assisted with another slash at the other side of the opponent’s head, going straight through the temple! WeIQjD

With this second attack, Zhou Yilu had been much steadier, although a discomfiting, conflicted feeling still lingered on inside his heart.

The broken armed zombie collapsed to the ground, but the four zombies that’d been making their way back had already arrived on the scene!

The two of them didn’t dare to continue fighting anymore, and scampered away, but unexpectedly, just a few steps away, ran right into Song Fei and Qi Yan who’d turned back!

“Go back up quickly!!!” 8F9kTN

Qi Yan’s outburst appeared to be without rhyme or reason, but Zhou Yilu and Qiao Siqi could tell from his nervous expression— there was unmistakably nothing good up ahead!

But, how could this building be easy to go back up!

It was easy to jump down from the second-floor balcony, but all of the first-floor balconies were sealed. They called them balconies, but in reality, these things were basically one with the rooms inside. They wouldn’t even know where to begin even if they did want to climb up the fully PVC window-enclosed outside!

What was even worse, was that the zombies that’d forced Qi Yan and them to return had already swarmed over, while the zombies inside the dormitories had also rushed out after hearing the sounds, a sudden zombie tide! l XE4a

“This way—”

Suddenly, there came a call from diagonally above them.

The four people looked up at the same time, and saw a person standing on the balcony across from 440. A “rope” composed of several bed sheets tied together came down from a gap between his balcony balusters, its length allowing it to skim the surface of the ground, no more and no less.

In a heartbeat, the four of them practically jetted right over, as though possessed. Zhou Yilu was the fastest, Qiao Siqi, the second, Song Fei, the third, with Qi Yan bringing up the rear. Everyone became locusts on the same rope in the blink of an eye. jfXMRA

When Qi Yan climbed up, he was almost bitten on the leg by a zombie that’d caught up with them. Fortunately, he could kick rather swiftly.

More than twenty-or-so zombies surrounded the bottom of the “bed sheet rope”, grabbing on to the sheets countless times, then losing their grip countless times. One of them hadn’t let go yet, but after raising a foot and kicking off the ground, also lost its grip in the end. They were too stiff to be able to perform these kinds of movements that required fine motor skills, leaving them in a quandary, frenzied with anxiety.

Song Fei: “Ai, Qiao Siqi, don’t shake it, ah! ”

Qiao Siqi: “It’s not me shaking it, it’s Zhou Yilu!” aJedjt

Zhou Yilu: “I have to climb up, how can I not pull hard on it, would such a soft thing not shake when I pull on it, ma!”

Qi Yan: “It doesn’t matter if it shakes or not, just don’t step on my head!”

With Qi Yan alighting, all four of them had finally made it safely.

Still the fourth four, just that this time, they’d relocated to another building. 0cP3Zi

Luo Geng led his four schoolmates into his room, wiping away the sweat on his forehead: “You guys are really crazy, trying to force your way out, ah! ”

“If we don’t force our way out then we’ll starve to death, what else could we do.” Song Fei was panting, still traumatized.

Qi Yan let out a long sigh of relief: “Many thanks.”

Luo Geng hurriedly waved his hands: “Things are already like this, what’s there to thank…” Before he could finish speaking, he stopped short. BaU7de

His friendly smile had frozen on his face, and little by little, faded away as it was completely replaced by a horrified look of consternation.

The four people turned their heads back stiffly, just in time to see another person climbing up along the “bed sheet rope” that they hadn’t retrieved in time.

That person was wearing a slim trench coat, layered over a turtleneck sweater, slender legs somewhat clumsily making it over the railings, before finally coming to the center of the balcony.

Five people in the room. s4OAXN

One person on the balcony.

The right side of the balcony sliding door was open.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

In the next second, that person suddenly lunged their way, and with a dong, slammed soundly into the glass on the left side. The force was so great that the spot where the glass was hit instantaneously spiderwebbed with cracks.

But, that person’s expression didn’t shift in the slightest, as though incapable of feeling any pain. pyZBIW

No, that wasn’t a person at all.
