Voice Of Another ChanceChapter 21

The following day, Sato woke up very early. He couldn’t sleep well the night before, so he was up even before Kyosuke.

Before going out, he spent almost an hour in his room, pacing from one end to the other, trying to gain some semblance of composure. He knew that if Kyosuke would see him like this, he would worry. Therefore, Sato only woke up his friend when he was sure that his nerves wouldn’t show too much on his face. zSQ2bH

Despite all his efforts, though, Sato kept spacing out during breakfast. He either chewed a bite for minutes on end or played with his food without picking up anything. This attitude caused Kyosuke to sigh and shake his head, a pitying expression showing on his face.

Sato swallowed his food heavily, having the unpleasant sensation of eating sand. He couldn’t chew properly anymore and his throat was so dry that he almost choked. When he tried to drink some water, he noticed that both his hands were shaking, making it difficult for the liquid to reach its destination even after trying several times.

Witnessing this distressing image, Kyosuke finally couldn’t hold it in anymore. He grabbed the glass from Sato’s hand and placed it down with a loud thud.

“Haaaa! Honestly now, you look like a senior high schooler, who is about to have his end of the year exams.” mQjK v

“Somehow, I believe your comparison is quite fitting.” Sato gave a weak smile, putting down his chopsticks. It was clear that he won’t be able to eat properly anyway, so better to give up now before he ends up needing the Heimlich maneuver.

“What fitting?! Stop acting like your soul has flown away and get a grip! Didn’t you say last night that it was just a table reading? Why are you so nervous now?” Kyosuke smirked, his eyes flashing with a challenge.

“I feel like my health points are decreasing rapidly. Kyosuke, you’re being unfair, using my words against me.”

“En. It’s my punishment for not allowing me to come with you.”

In the end, Sato left the apartment much earlier than he had initially planned. The table reading was going to take place at the same location where the audition had been held. Hence, he was quite familiar with the area already, making it easier to travel there. EZPFo9

When he reached his destination, Sato was taken aback by the multitude of people he saw. Despite arriving quite early, almost everyone from the cast was already gathered in the large conference room. Four rows of long tables were placed in a square formation with a hollow space inside. This allowed everybody to see each other better and made communication face to face much easier.

As they waited for the reading to start, the crew members got to know each other better. They all talked and gossiped as if they had already known each other for years. Just like Sato, everyone was hyped about the upcoming filming and they were all eagerly expressing their opinions on the script, the characters and even the original book.

In this rather informal environment, Sato managed to relax his nerves and he even laughed several times. Thus, before they even began reading the scripts, Kyosuke’s words proved to be prophetic.

Like Kyosuke had predicted, everybody soon fawned over Sato’s image, excitedly pointing out all the similarities he had with his character. From his beautiful pale face, to his pretty peach blossom eyes, and even his mellow voice and soft manner of speaking; nothing escaped the cast’s thorough examination and enthusiastic praises. In their eyes, he was indeed the kindhearted, ethereal hero, Oinuma Zetsu. 9l6Rs1

There was nothing special in his tone while he spoke, but a hint of aloofness could be detected if one paid close attention. He wasn’t shutting people out per se, but still maintained a proper distance. His overall manner was unaffected and every gesture he made carried a certain elegance.

From the director and producer, to the last actor, everyone loved him. After all, he was a very good-looking young man, who spoke beautifully and who’s acting skills were above average. What was there not to like about him?

“Imamura-kun, are you nervous about playing Oinuma Zetsu?” one of the young actors asked, suddenly leaning closer towards him.

“En. Very nervous. I am afraid of making mistakes and upsetting Director Mayama.” Sato replied simply. zvn0bQ

“Oh, me too. I heard the Director is quite strict, especially with us young actors.” The young man whined in a low voice.

Sato smiled and strangely felt his own nervousness easing up considerately. Knowing that he wasn’t the only one worrying made it easier for him to calm down.

“We’ll be fine.” He comforted, sounding like he was saying it more for his sake than the other actor’s.

However, it appeared that his words had worked pretty well. The young man broke into a wide smile and he nodded his head fervently. From there, the conversation turned towards their acting experience, what characters they prefer and which ones they don’t like. The topics attracted the attention of other actors that were sitting close by and it soon ended up being a group conversation. 1Pb2tu

At one point, one of the more senior actors turned to Sato and raised a question.

“Imamura-kun, I wonder, how come you haven’t advanced further in the industry? With your looks and talent, I can’t believe no one took notice of you.”

At first Sato was startled, but he eventually calmed down and gave a quick reply.

“Thank you for your praise, but I still have a lot to learn. That’s why, please teach me well during the time we will work together.” XP4IHe

It sounded perfunctory, but this answer seemed to have satisfied the senior actor’s ego. He smiled proudly and began to give all the youngsters gathered there advice, showcasing his vast acting experience.

Without giving away too much information, and appearing modest, Sato simply smiled and excused himself to go to the restroom. There was still a little while before the reading was set to begin, so he took the chance to slip out before anyone else spoke to him. He really needed a break from all that chatter.

In reality, he also hoped to find Asakura. Therefore, he left the conference room and walked around the corridor with hurried steps.

Just as he reached the end and made a turn to the left, he unexpectedly bumped into someone. jrdfN7

“Ah! Excuse me…”

The person was one head taller than him and dressed in a casual light grey suit. Sato had to raise his head in order to see that person’s face and so he did just that. But the moment he recognized the person’s identity, his next words of apology remained stuck in his throat. They formed a lump which couldn’t go up, nor down, blocking his airway and causing him to almost choke. His widened eyes expressed the heavy shock which his mouth could not put into sounds.
