There’s a harsh split between urbanites and people from rural towns (rural town folks/migrant workers can’t obtain certain IDs in big cities, which are limited to those who are born there, consequently, migrant workers can’t access certain infrastructure). Cheap construction labour is oftentimes delegated to these rural migrant workers who are considered “outsiders” by urbanites. The re-adapted English loan word “coolie” is used again here, but its context is strictly about how brutally laborious the work is. These sorts of conditions are improving nowadays, but the mindset of us vs. them is still very strong in contemporary Chinese society.

  3. Aww, I read it as the author intended to. And although it’s bittersweet, it’s also left a very warm feeling. Maybe one of them may have to go first, and for Lu Qi’an to pray it would be him to go last was so admirable even though heartbreaking. That loyalty of his isn’t easy to come by 😭
