Cao Feng couldn’t calm down for a long time. He opened the webpage for a second time and found the exact time of his search history.

He clearly remembered that, at that time, the computer was at Xiao Che’s place. Could it be that he was the one looking at it? But…how was that possible! AlMkOC

Cao Feng couldn’t understand it no matter how hard he tried. There were only three people in the family – him, Duan Yuche, and Uncle Duan.

Uncle Duan definitely…definitely wouldn’t, and Duan Shumin’s study room had a computer in it, so there was no way he would use didi’s computer to search…this kind of “dirty things”.

There was only one answer. This page was accessed by didi.

If it was only one page, Cao Feng could comfort himself that maybe it was an accidental misclick. But the browsing history clearly showed a list of web pages, all of which had similar content. tMOVPl

Cao Feng checked them one by one, and the more he saw, the more frightened he became…

This was a foreign language forum.

Some web pages had pictures, but some didn’t. Cao Feng’s English was average, and he hadn’t yet reached the point where he could see English text and immediately translate them. He took out the Oxford dictionary, looked up the words he didn’t know, and wrote down a wavering list of words and phrases.

Some words made Cao Feng blush when he translated them.

The forum wasn’t just like that, there was actually also this, and there were things that didn’t make sense when translated. But combined with context, it was obvious that this site wasn’t clean.

Did didi really look at this? Why was he on this kind of website? Could it be that he was??

Cao Feng didn’t know what kind of mood he was in. He stared at the webpage for a long time, and his feelings were so complicated that he didn’t know what to do. He would rather have a computer virus! 6M5fUs

Duan Shumin still learned about Duan Yuche’s sprained ankle from Xiao Zhang. His first thought was that the kid was pretending to be sick again, until Xiao Zhang said, “It’s real, Cao Feng carried him when school ended. President, the young master’s injury isn’t light. He can’t even walk, you should go home and see him.”

“It’s so late, why haven’t you slept yet? Where’s Xiao Che?”

Didi is already asleep.” Cao Feng said, and then stopped. Did Duan Shumin know about didi’s matter? He probably didn’t. And if he learned that didi was actually gay, what would he think?

“How much did you drink?” Duan Shumin saw that Cao Feng’s face was red, probably because of the alcohol, but why were his eyes also red?

Cao Feng shook his head: “Not much.” iNIDPK

What he drank was the glutinous rice wine that he had brought, which wasn’t high in alcohol content.

“Is something wrong, Xiao Feng?” Duan Shumin was a perceptive person, and could easily tell that Cao Feng wasn’t acting normally.

“No, it’s nothing.” Cao Feng hurriedly bowed his head, vowing to carry this secret to his grave. “It’s just, I’ve been making something recently, and there’s been some problems.”

“Oh, making things. You look so upset, Uncle thought there was something wrong.” Duan Shumin had definitely known that half of Cao Feng’s room was now a workshop, and he was working on a bunch of random little inventions. As to what those little inventions were, Duan Shumin wasn’t certain, but he thought it was a good thing that the kid had his own interests and beliefs. It would be of great help to his future. gfd10

Cao Feng felt like Duan Shumin’s misplaced concern for him was a little hard to bear.

Duan Shumin said: “It’s not very good for you to do these things in your room. There’s a basement at home that hasn’t been used much. Tomorrow I’ll get someone to clear it out and make a workshop for you. Do you have any tools that you need? I’ll have someone prepare it all for you.”

Cao Feng hurriedly declined, but Duan Shumin was very insistent, saying that there was no point in leaving the basement unused, and that they might as well use it for something: “Right, there’s also a massage chair in the basement, we bought it during the renovation. When you’re tired from tinkering with your inventions, you can get a massage, relax a little bit.” The more he spoke, the more he thought this was a great idea. “It looks like we’re going to have a scientist in our family!”

Cao Feng failed to refuse, so he agreed. But Duan Yuche could see that Cao Feng’s mood still wasn’t good, and felt a little depressed. He thought that maybe Cao Feng hadn’t scored his best in the exams, and said some words of comfort: “If you encounter any trouble, don’t think about it too much. What’s done is done; since it has already come to this, why not accept it, don’t you agree?” FANMtT

“What’s done is done…” Cao Feng repeated, and closed his eyes. “I will remember, thank you uncle…didi‘s foot is injured, and he probably won’t be able to go to the sports festival tomorrow. You should help him call the school and ask for leave.”

For this reason, neither of them went to wake Duan Yuche up the next day. But Duan Yuche was awoken by his own biological clock, and looked at the clock, wondering, “Why is it suddenly so quiet today? No one’s calling him?”

He was almost late!

Just as his thoughts began to spiral, the door suddenly opened. Duan Yuche thought it was Cao Feng, so he closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep to play tricks on him. In the end he felt someone tiptoe into his room, and lift the edge of his blanket. UylzQr

Duan Yuche opened his eyes suddenly.

Duan Shumin said: “You’re awake?”

“Dad?” Duan Yuche was naturally very happy to see his father, but Duan Shumin hadn’t come home for many days, and Duan Yuche felt very dissatisfied in his heart. His tone went cold. “When did you come back?”

“Last night,” Duan Shumin said. “Dad rushed back as soon as he heard that your foot was hurt.” KMwZWQ

“Cao Feng told you?”

“Xiao Zhang did. How is it? Let dad see if your feet are swollen.” He lifted the blanket, and at the first glance his expression immediately changed. “Why is it so swollen? It’s like a steamed bun.”

Duan Yuche took a look and said calmly, “It’s not too bad, it’s much better than yesterday.”

“It was worse yesterday?” qu9N2m

“En…okay, I’m getting up now, you go out first.”

Duan Shumin: “Dad has already helped you ask the teacher for leave, so you don’t have to go to school today. Anyway, it’s just a sports festival.”

Duan Yuche was slightly stunned: “That won’t work, I still have activities!”

“Your Xiao Feng gege said he would help you run. You can’t run in this condition, so don’t stress.” Yfa6Se

Duan Yuche let out an “oh” sound and asked again, “Where’s Cao Feng? Did he leave already?”

“Already left, went to class. You can have peace of mind and recuperate at home. Dad will stay home today and take care of you, I won’t go anywhere else.”

Duan Yuche’s expression was indifferent, and he couldn’t bring himself to be even a little happy. Cao Feng went to school without checking on him at all?

extra chapter as promised ! last chapter was almost double the length of a usual chapter, and now this one is shorter than a usual chapter, haha

i added a line break because the author often changes topics mid-chapter, and i think this might be less jarring. let me know if you’d prefer i didn’t!

i like how we get to see the dynamic between duan shumin, duan yuche, and cao feng. duan shumin often means well but it doesn’t seem like he knows what duan yuche or cao feng actually want, cao feng always wants to repay duan shumin’s kindness and take care of duan yuche to the point where he’s now keeping secrets for the both of them, and duan yuche is completely oblivious to how much he’s starting to like cao feng, haha

thank you again to JP for the kofi ! much appreciated :blobsnuggle: zO0gGQ

in the raws, the author uses this chinese idiom “既来之, 则安之”, and follows it up with an explanation of the phrase (probably because cao feng might not understand it). i didn’t want to essentially translate the same thing twice, so i replaced it with the english idiom “what’s done is done”. the meanings of these two idioms aren’t exactly the same –the chinese means something more along the lines of ‘if something bad has happened, then you might as well make the best of it’, whereas the english means ‘it has already happened, so you can only move forward now’, but i thought replacing an idiom with another idiom would preserve the meaning of the text better

  1. Thank you so much!

This has simply become of my favorite stories. Big fluffy Fengfeng has misunderstood! But he has no idea he is also slowly but surely going there himself! 😂😂😂😂

Well, it’s just my opinion, but I really don’t like Duan Shumin. He’s mostly feeling guilty about his son. I’m an only child whose parents had to do long hours of work. When I was still a kid I didn’t see them often. So I can understand to a certain extent how Yuche feels. 😔

But poor Yuche doesn’t even have his mother around, and his father completely neglects him. I know some people might think that I’m exaggerating and Duan Shumin is not neglectful, but trust me he is. I know that being a single parent is really difficult, especially when the said parent has a demanding job. But at this point, Duan Shumin just ignores whatever Yuche does and takes them as “trying to seek attention”. Well guess what, he is seeking attention! Because he freaking needs it!!!!! I don’t know when will parents understand that if they can not fulfill the emotional needs of their children then they’re just not doing a good job as parents! Some parents really treat they’re children as dolls, great if they’re obedient and satisfied with the smallest amount of attention. I really feel Duan Shumin is a minor case of such parents. He doesn’t want to deal with the consequences of his and his former partner’s action, how they have shaped Yuche, how negligent they were, and how they have left the poor kid starving for the love of his parents, to which every kid is entitled. The mother is not there anymore, so she can’t do anything to alleviate the situation (by no means am I saying that she was not also at fault). But Duan Shumin never even made an attempt to address the problem! “My kid is parental love hungry, so you know what, I’ll just leave him be. And whenever he tries to get a bit of attention, I’m gonna dismiss it as him being a spoiled brat that wants things to either go his way or highway! Plus! I’m gonna go rendezvousing with this person and that person and I’m gonna leave my poor teen boy, who’s at a very sensitive age, all his hormones are flying everywhere and maybe are making his life a living hell by thinking I’m not enough for anyone, and no one loves me because of it, and I’m just gonna down right ignore him and not come home for several days. Oh, he doesn’t talk to me? Nah, that’s just because he’s spoiled and been raised in a jar of honey!!! ”

Sorry for rambling, I really needed to get this off my chest, otherwise I would have exploded. Some people are just not fit to be parents. I hope no kid ever has to go through such a situation. Having a middle income close-knit family, who pay attention to you and your needs, is way better that cultivating an attention hungry (sometimes even a narcissist) rich person, who’s gonna bring hell to the lives of people around him/her just because he/she is privileged enough and has the means to do so.

    • As someone from a close-knit, middle class family, I can definitely attest to the veracity of your words. Even though Dan Shumin cares about his son, he’s definitely ill-equipped to be a parent and clearly hasn’t made time to figure out why his son acts out. I hope he makes amends with Dan Yuche before his death at least. Thanks for posting such an insightful comment.

Also thank you to the translator for their hard work!
