I Can Still Survive [Interstellar]Ch6 - Bloodline

T/W: Suicide and child death mentioned in passing

The Ye family’s medical team gave Ye Muo a thorough examination. NsIKYd

The doctor in charge pulled out strip after strip of data and showed them to Ye Zhiyuan.

“His psychic powers were holding steady at Level B before he entered his development period, but now they’re quickly rising at an astounding pace. I’ve never seen a case like this before. The soothing agent is absolutely incapable of meeting his needs. As long as he safely gets through the development period, he will definitely reach Level S in the end.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

It’s inconceivable. Normally, the development period only makes one’s psychic power easier to control. I’ve seen a few cases of level advancement, but only by one level, like from C to B. And those children were already hovering around the threshold to begin with. Each advancement in level equates to an exponential increase in power, so to go from B to S is simply inconceivable.”

The doctor was very moved. Level A psychics could only go up to the rank of legion commander in the military. Only Level S psychics could advance further, as they alone had the strength to command a fleet of over a hundred warships. LfuNeD

“After all these years. Finally, the Ye family will have another Level S aside from your elder sister. As long as the Ye family has a Level S, its past shame and crimes will be laid to rest at last. Your decision to bring this child back all those years ago was truly wise.”

The average person’s psychic power was only at Level C. Level B and above were considered exceptional, and Level S rarer than rare. Every Level S psychic was an existence that could change the tides of battle when deployed. The Empire’s public list of Level S psychics, which included His Majesty, numbered less than ten.

Ye Zhiyuan felt a bout of sudden irony.

Was it wise? How many Level S psychics were there in the Grantz family? That level of power was a given for them. What could he say, ‘as expected of the powerful Grantz bloodline’? Even their seemingly cursed fate seemed to be genetic. The first emperor of Grantz blew out his brains in his palace bedchamber during the prime of his life. Of his seven sons and daughters, three died on the battlefield.

God seemed to have given the Grantz everything. No one could hope to match their exceptional talent, let alone their outstanding appearance. No one could deny the glory of the Grantz, who single-handedly built this miraculous empire.

Who could have imagined that this vast empire started out on a tiny abandoned planet sentenced to death, one that lacked any resources of its own. The forsaken people of this abandoned planet survived only on the charity of other countries.

The Federation, as well as neighbouring countries, would come at regular intervals to drop off basic supplies for one simple, cruel reason. They needed this planet and the people on it to form the first line of defense against the insects. In other words, they were raising people like livestock, as living barricades to fend off the insect tide.

At the same time, because there was no military presence on this planet and it lacked the means to defend itself, exiled galactic pirates flocked to this place from all over and engaged in indiscriminate plunder. fixspZ

Every rebellion ended in failure, every riot bringing only meaningless bloodshed. A past akin to hell marked the beginning of the Empire. A humiliation every one of its citizens was taught to remember from childhood.

This situation went on for millennia until the Grantz appeared.

The original Grantz picked up broken swords off the battlefield and beheaded the galactic pirates. Planting their bloodstained flags on the piles of insect carcasses and pirate corpses, they led the survivors to expand their territory at a ludicrous pace with that forsaken planet at the epicenter.

Even the Federation, who still criticized the Empire’s way of doing things as too inhumane and brutal to this day, had to acknowledge what the Grantz achieved. Their glory was still being celebrated to this day. rcma K

Yet the honourable Grantz, the glorious Grantz, the Grantz who single-handedly established the vast Empire of today…

Not one of them met a good end.

Long, long ago, each orphanage would have a special room with no windows, completely sealed off aside from a single entrance. Its walls would be lined with materials that insulated psychic power. Inside this room were row upon row of children restrained in medical beds made for psychiatric patients whose eyes had been covered.

It was common for these children to quickly deteriorate after being deprived of psychic soothing for too long. A slow death spiral of alternating psychic meltdowns and never-ending pain awaited them.

“Are there no other options?”

The doctor was determined. He was unwilling to set aside his own beliefs that this future Level S should be protected at all costs. Having Ye Zhiyuan go find Ye Muo’s biological parents as soon as possible was the most expedient and effective treatment plan. vRIWUa

“There are, but other methods will more or less leave lasting aftereffects. Generally speaking, finding his biological parents as soon as possible is the best option–”

Ye Zhiyuan interrupted him.

“If I could do that, if it was even the slightest bit possible, I wouldn’t be asking you this question.”

He twisted to stare into the doctor’s eyes, each word squeezed from between clenched teeth. In the dim light, his eyes seemed to glitter with faint starlight. Xsvmy6

“I want him to live on more than anyone.”

Otherwise, he would not have risked the execution of the entire Ye family that year to bring him back.

After a while, Ye Zhiyuan let out a deep breath.

“Apologies. I lost control of my emotions just now. I need a way to keep him alive.” iTQqBe

Ye Zhiyuan quietly stated.

“He’s still a child. There’s still so much he has yet to experience.”

Ye Zhiyuan stood as upright as ever. He was still quite young himself, but he seemed to age so much in a single moment.

The doctor sighed. Since Ye Zhiyuan put it like this, it seemed like there really was no way. How unfortunate. If the Ye family was able to produce even one Level S psychic, it wouldn’t be reduced to its current state, completely reliant on Ye Zhiyuan. omfZAc

The Ye family was not like this in the past.

Who would have thought that the Ye family would be reduced to this state one day? In the course of a single night, all the actively serving Ye family members were discharged. Even the title of Ye Zhiyuan’s father was taken away. Since the incident, only Ye Zhiyuan has managed to rise to prominence.

After the incident, Ye Zhiyuan’s father took most of the remaining Ye family and resettled in a remote galaxy, living cautiously for the rest of his life. If no one from the next generation of this family were able to establish themselves in the military, an even more difficult life awaited them all.

The doctor has been working for this family long enough to personally witness them be reduced to an existence that had to appease everyone around them, that anyone could step on. They were even forced out of their main manor– the place Ye Zhiyuan grew up in was very different from where Ye He and Ye Yun did. That house was in the most central part of the imperial capital. DaHMEo

He thought for a while before pulling up a bunch of documents.

“In all this time, I’ve only seen two such children who appeared to gradually lose receptivity to the psychic soothing agent. One was an orphan in an orphanage for whom the soothing agent failed when he was still halfway through his psychic development period.

The other was the little young master of the Clinton family, who was intolerant of the soothing agent from the beginning. His parents were trapped on a fringe planet due to the Planet No. 2 Rebellion incident for three years.”

“Both survived. The first child had milder symptoms, perhaps due to the medical team in charge of his care constantly injecting him with suppressant agent. However, he often lost control of his psychic power even after his development period and suffered from lasting nerve pain. Six years later, he committed suicide with a firearm.” hrNv9p

“I’m unsure about the methods used in the second case, but that child is hale and healthy in every way aside from some emotional irritability. Personally, I think that might just be how he is rather than an aftereffect.”

The doctor couldn’t help but add.

“I’ve always wondered which medical team the Clintons hired, but they did an excellent job of keeping things under wraps. What they achieved is virtually impossible in theory.”

Ye Zhiyuan forcibly directed the conversation back on topic. CzYLr5

“How much time do I have?”

“The soothing agent still has some effect on him, and I can also give him a small amount of suppressant agent along with some other medications to temporarily halt his development period.”

The doctor emphasized.

“You must contact the Clintons as soon as possible and determine if their method is available to us.” FBsJLj

The current Ye family was not the same as before, but the Clintons were as mighty as ever, if not more so.

“I understand. I will contact the Clinton family as soon as possible.”

When Ye Muo woke up, Ye Yun brought a chair to sit by his bed. He crossed his arms and rested one leg over the other. He had noticed almost the instant Ye Muo woke up.

“You’re awake. Father ordered me–” bproSQ

He emphasized the word ‘ordered’.

“To take good care of you when you’re not in class.”

Ye Yun stared at Ye Muo.

“Isn’t there anything you want to say?” rtGodj

Ye Muo sat up. A dull pain still occasionally pounded in the back of his head. He was caught off guard by the sudden question.

He thought for a moment before tentatively saying.

“S-sorry?”

Ye Yun shot to his feet in anger. This again. 3dQbKR

“No. I was talking about how you have to stay with me except during classes. No more hanging out with those losers in Class D.”

Ye Muo finally lifted his head to glance at Ye Yun at that. In the end, he couldn’t help but mumbled dejectedly, “I’m in Class D too. Many of my friends are there. They’re really good to me.”

Ye Yun froze for a beat. This was the first time Ye Muo showed this kind of hurt expression in front of him. Usually, he would silently endure every one of his unreasonable requests.

He wanted to say something to redeem himself, but he didn’t know what to say. UXqE9p

Finally, he turned away to get a bandage for Ye Muo’s arm. After who knew how many injections, fresh blood seeped out of the area as soon as he shifted.

“Anyways, just remember that I’ll be coming to get you after class. We’ll eat and do everything else together. I know you don’t want to be stuck with me– the feeling’s mutual, by the way– but these are Father’s orders. I don’t have a say either.”

Finally, he added like an afterthought.

“If you want to be with your friends, I guess I can stick around. But we have to stay together. Father’s orders.” jZK72D

Ye Yun repeated once again.

Ye Mo quietly listened to Ye Yun. He suddenly spoke.

“I want to spend time with you.”

Ye Yun’s eyes widened. Ye Muo’s hair fell forward gently as he lowered his head. Ye Yun couldn’t see his eyes anymore, just his beautifully contoured lower jaw which seemed to be crafted out of precious porcelain. VSeO1v

“What?”

“I’m very happy to hear that. I like spending time with Big Brother.”

Yet Ye Yun twisted his head away, somewhat speechless.

“W-well I don’t, um, exactly mind spending time with you. After all, you’re so weak that you’ll attract all sorts of trouble if I’m not there.” XOZF H

Translator's Note

Just to be clear, the empire that the Grantz family rules over is also called Grantz.

  1. So YZY knew all along?? And being an illegitimate child was a ruse? Why did he lie to his wife? This reminds me of game of thrones…

  2. Thanks for the chapter! Based on the intro to the story, perhaps Ye Muo was conceived to carry on the Grantz family in spite of the current emperor’s refusal to have kids? And YZY has taken a huge risk to save and protect a child who isn’t supposed to exist? He mentioned risking the death of the Ye family by doing this, so I’d say this is not authorized…. I love the dynamics of the family. They really seem to care about Ye Muo, but apart from the mother are horrible at expressing it.

    • I’m not really sure about this but in my opinion, the mother is actually a good person. Ye Muo mentioned that she was sincere, even worried for his health so much. Her way of expressing her affection isn’t that bad either. But I agree with you, the dynamics of the family is very much cute and better than I expected!

        • Ohhhh, I’m sorry too! I misunderstood the text. You must’ve meant “They really seem to care about Ye Muo, but apart from the mother, are horrible at expressing it.” You’re right about that!

  3. awww I am so happy Papa Ye is not the scumbag I was worried he’d be. But I am definitely curious as to why he risked so much to save the kid. I have a feeling his dad was somehow related to Ye Muo’s birth and maybe that’s how he knew about him and why he risked so much to bring him back

  4. ok so the stepmom and brothers actually do care for him…thats good….but the dad =_= I cant tell if he only saw him as something to raise his familys foothold and then unexpectedly started caring for him orrrrrrrrrrrr

  5. I hope once he is reunited with his biological father he can still keep the brotherly relationship and step mother relationship or at least help them like how they treate him so well.
