I Upended Yet Another Campus Urban LegendChapter 67

Chapter 67

Lin Yi reread the last three medical records in disbelief. In terms of “disease diagnosis”, the cause of the patient’s mental illness was indeed free of any cuckolding, betrayals or misfortunes brought about by the original family. UdbnOR

Qin Zhou next to him pondered for a while and said, “Maybe his surname isn’t actually Zhu?”

He didn’t doubt Lin Yi’s analysis. On the contrary, Lin Yi’s analysis made sense.

On the other hand, they only had Doctor Zhu’s word that his surname was actually “Zhu”. Doctor Zhu told them that his surname was Zhu. No one would question is someone’s surname was real so the patients who were deceived into the sanatorium called him “Doctor Zhu” and the nursing aides who were attracted by the recruitment offer also called him “Doctor Zhu”.

Now that the ‘Doctor’ was fake, then the ‘Zhu’ part may also be fake. 7blh0C

Lin Yi was momentarily stunned. There were hundreds of patient records in the folder. They spent so much time just screening the patients with the surname ‘Zhu’. Finding Doctor Zhu in the rest of all these records was going to be more difficult.

But even if Doctor Zhu’s surname wasn’t ‘Zhu’, there was no telling if his actual gender was male or if his age was between 25-35 years old. After all, the identity of a patient with a Split Mind disorder is illusory; his behavior, illogical.

They simply didn’t have the time to sift through the records to find the correct answer.

Qin Zhou said, “Look only at the ‘disease diagnosis’.”

WPQNdk

Lin Yi nodded. “OK.”

Lin Yi had the same idea. The only way they could pinpoint it now was by looking for ‘cuckold’, ‘betrayal and ‘original family’.

But speed had to be sacrificed. The computer was simply too old. Each record took at least 5-7 seconds to open.

After Lin Yi struggled to read more than a dozen medical records, Qin Zhou said, “Don’t rush.” jLsVuq

At first, Lin Yi though that Qin Zhou only meant it as words of comfort but from out of the corner of his eye, he saw Qin Zhou walk to the door of the office. He then pulled open the door and walked out.

Not long after, Qin Zhou came back with a bottle of ether. He had just left to go to the medicine room. He placed the refreshed ether-stained towel into a sealed bag and handed it to Lin Yi. Qin Zhou said, “The doctor’s probably going to wake up in a couple of minutes. When he does, you knock him out again. I’ll go deal with our patients first.”

Lin Yi knew that Qin Zhou was going to buy more time for him. So he nodded, “Okay.”

Qin Zhou left the office again. frJUBC

As soon as Qin Zhou left, Lin Yi felt a little nervous. He continued to read the medical records while paying attention to Doctor Zhu’s condition. Seeing that Doctor Zhu was showing signs of waking up, Lin Yi set aside what he was doing, walked towards the sofa and wordlessly knocked Doctor Zhu out again.

He had already destroyed all the glass containers on the second floor. It will be difficult to sneak into the office to find clues later so he had to turn up with something tonight.

Lin Yi continued to check the medical records. He didn’t even know when Qin Zhou would come back.

It was when Qin Zhou was already standing next to him, his breathing brushing against his neck that he noticed he’d gotten back. dgzVeG

In other words, none of the more than one hundred medical records belonged to Doctor Zhu. NhJYHg

Doctor Zhu wasn’t a patient in the Yu City Huayuan District Psychiatric Hospital.

Qin Zhou stared at the computer screen and said after a while, “Little genius, look in a different folder.”

The other folder in the computer was “Medical Staff Information”

Lin Yi obediently went to open it. He knew what Qin Zhou was thinking. He checked to see if any medical records had been accidentally misplaced, from ‘Patient Information’ to ‘Medical Staff Information’. FgSeVp

He double clicked.

There were nine documents in the folder, Lin Yi opened them one by one and then fell into silence.

Qin Zhou beside him also frowned.

These nine records were for the students drawn into the 16-8 Rule World. MPWTFv

All the original medical staff of the hospital were all in the morgue now so who could have created these records?

Lin Yi looked at Doctor Zhu lying on the sofa.

After a long beat of silence. Lin Yi said, “So Doctor Zhu actually knows the password.”

It was Doctor Zhu who recruited them so only Doctor Zhu could have created their files. zGpULD

But if Doctor Zhu knew the password, why did he still keep the patients’ medical records? He even kept the same screen saver.

But there was no need to make any hypotheses for this question. Lin Yi immediately thought of the answer.

Doctor Zhu really was the Head Doctor of the Yu City Huayuan District Psychiatric Hospital.

Lin Yi glanced at Qin Zhou. From Qin Zhou’s expression, Lin Yi guessed that Qin Zhou had come to the same conclusion. yZoguv

This was the only way they could explain the existence of the nursing aides’ files, the screen saver and why the patient records haven’t been deleted. Doctor Zhu was the Head Doctor. He wasn’t a patient. He didn’t need to delete any of the patient’s information because his was never there in the first place.

After confirming this, Lin Yi began to look for traces of use in this computer.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

This computer had been used by Doctor Zhu. If he found traces of his activities, he might make additional discoveries. Lin Yi launched the browser to see if there were any search records.

And Qin Zhou also started rummaging in the office. He’d come to the same conclusion as Lin Yi. This was Doctor Zhu’s office so the things in it must belong to Doctor Zhu. E6QBhG

The two of them were each doing their own thing. They would look at Doctor Zhu from time to time to see if he showed any signs of waking up and once there were, they would knock him out once again.

After a while, Lin Yi found it and he excitedly called Qin Zhou over. “Senior, Senior.”

Qin Zhou came over and Lin Yi pointed to the search records.

Lung cancer. Wd5FI0

How long can you live with lung cancer?

Can lung cancer be cured?

Based on these search records. Lin Yi said, “Doctor Zhu must have gotten lung cancer. Not wanting to die, he got this crazy idea in his mind — Immortality. His profession gave him the opportunity to experiment. The reason why he killed the medical staff may be because he considered them obstacles. After committing the crime, Doctor Zhu began to look for experimental subjects. He changed the psychiatric hospital into a sanatorium, deceived the patients to get them here and then slowly searched for the carriers of new life, that is, the completely unaware nursing aides.”

Qin Zhou listened then one by one, he placed the things he’d found on the desk. pAIkVZ

There were a few nameless mental health tests, a few photos and a reminder note.

Lin Yi looked down. Even Lin Yi, a layman, could tell that the person who filled out the tests some serious mental illness. Several photos had been cropped — the mother in the photo of Doctor Zhu and his parents had been cut off. The mother must have been the one who caused the misfortune from the original family.

There was also a photo of Doctor Zhu with his wife and children. His wife had also been similarly cut off. His wife had also left him.

Lastly, there was the reminder note. It was for a huge sum owed. The debtor was not Doctor Zhu but the note was addressed to him. He must have served as guarantor for someone. But that someone fled and the debt collection company went looking for Doctor Zhu. PrxTOS

After looking over these things on the desk, Lin Yi looked at the books on the floor. They were all history books. A new outline for the main plot surfaced. Lin Yi said to Qin Zhou, “Doctor Zhu is suffering from a mental illness and all these things were the ones that led to it. His lung cancer was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Doctor Zhu has a ‘split mind disorder’ and he became two selves, one is Doctor Zhu of the psychiatric hospital who is desperately doing experiments to obtain eternal life and the other is Doctor Zhu of the sanatorium who already has eternal life.”

After he finished speaking, Lin Yi asked Qin Zhou, “Senior, do you have anything to add to the main plot of the 16-8 Rule World?”

“That’s good enough.” Qin Zhou said, “You’ve already completed it.”

After getting Qin Zhou’s affirmation, Lin Yi heaved a sigh of relief. cntvu0

His efforts tonight have finally paid off.

Now that they’ve more or less determined the main plot, the next step was to find the 16-8 Monster.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

So far they have had no communication with the other participants. Their only guess as to the identity of the 16-8 Monster was based on speculation, without any actual evidence to back it up.

It seemed it wasn’t going to be easy finding the 16-8 Monster and it also seemed that they won’t be able to find it for the time being. And so, Qin Zhou took this time to settle the score with Lin Yi. “If I hadn’t come looking for you tonight, what would you have done?” hGOfR2

Lin Yi thought for a while and said, “Then I would have to trouble Senior to collect my body for me.”

… Qin Zhou sneered and said, “No way.”

Lin Yi fell silent. He began to doubt the authenticity of the gossip he’d heard in the 2-6 Rule World. “And to think I almost believed it.”

Qin Zhou asked, “What?” y3bY C

“Nothing…” Lin Yi hurriedly said, “I was wondering who the 16-8 Monster could be.”

Lin Yi looked at Qin Zhou, feeling a little guilty. “Senior, we’ve had no contact with the other participants and with the living dead around, it will be difficult to find the 16-8 Monster.”

Qin Zhou gave Lin Yi a suspicious look, and then said, “Monsters will always give themselves away. And right now there’s still only one Rule of Death. This shouldn’t be difficult for you, Little genius.”

In the Patients’ Building, Room 201.

Jiang Man looked at Patient 201, who had fallen into a coma due to a high fever. She then looked hesitantly at the call bell beside the bed.

Does she want to tell Doctor Zhu?

But she doesn’t want to. f2yeRv

She wanted Patient 201 to die. These past few days have been absolute torment; she felt like she was quickly going mad. No matter what she did, Patient 201 followed her around. The most frightening thing was that when she slept at night, she could feel her body being touched.

She could only pretend to sleep.

After so long, she was going to get some room to breathe. Jiang Man didn’t want Doctor Zhu to come to Room 201 and treat Patient 201.

Yes, it’d be best if Patient 201 simply died. Besides, she didn’t kill the NPC. The NPC died by herself. KG6Y o

Thinking so, Jiang Man withdrew her hand from pressing the call bell.

She walked to the window, intending to open it to let the cold night wind blow in again. That might aggravate Patient 201’s condition even further.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

She pushed open the window and as the chilly evening wind blew in, Jiang Man saw two figures in the shadows, hiding in the cover of night.

She was startled but she quickly recognized one of the figures. 5xE4vj

It was Qin Zhou.

It was the president of the student union, Qin Zhou.

Jiang Man looked at Qin Zhou in surprise. She guessed that Qin Zhou must be coming back from looking for the Rules of Death. No wonder she didn’t see Qin Zhou at dinner.

After attending the Unnatural Engineering University for so long, Jiang Man naturally knew how powerful Qin Zhou was. rUxyFJ

Jiang Man resisted the urge to rush out to ask Qin Zhou about the Rules of Death. The student union was there to protect the students and as the president of the student union, Qin Zhou would definitely protect those who were unfortunate enough to be drawn into the Rule Worlds.

Qin Zhou would probably announce the Rules of Death in the morning.

This way, if she knew the Rules of Death, even if Patient 201 survived, she wouldn’t have to be so afraid.

  1. I hate fiction that uses mental illnesses without actually understanding them at all 🙄 whether schizophrenia or DID, looking for records saying it was caused by cheating or betrayal is the wrong move anyway, because that’s not how either works. This is a very broad simplification and there may be exceptions, but generally speaking, schizophrenia has a strong genetic component and DID is caused by intense trauma, usually in childhood. Even if we’re to assume that Dr. Zhou’s adult misfortunes traumatized him enough to cause DID or his relationship with his mother had been traumatic since childhood, it wouldn’t manifest like THIS. I really wish writers would do deep research before portraying topics that are already so heavily villainized and stigmatized.
    • To be clear, I’m enjoying the story as a whole, but this type of portrayal is far too common and really gets to me, so I wanted to clarify how unrealistic it is in case other readers aren’t aware.

      • first) +1

second) to be fair, the author didn’t specify if Dr. Zhu had either schizophrenia or DID, it was only said that he had some type of personality disorder :’D

ofc, correct me if i’m wrong tho 🙂

        • The TL notes said that “split mind disorder” usually refers to schizophrenia or DID, and the text says “he became two selves” which implies a rudimentary/outdated portrayal of DID, but I’m also completely unfamiliar with Chinese medical terminology or the original text so there could be some miscommunication somewhere along the line

As a person with a mental disorder it makes me sad to see us so often referred to like this. Plus the transphobic bits… though to be fair those might’ve been mistranslations. I’ve only pointed out one little microaggression in a previous chapter. I do a 3 strikes rule for books: if there’s 3 instances of misogyny/racism/transphobia/ableism I stop reading.

Translation errors happen though, and I don’t want to suggest that any of it was intentional.
