Translation notes:
Tian Hang was originally a younger generation, but who made him take the role of leader? –> Tian Hang was of the younger generation, but here he served as the facilitator.
Thanks for the correction! ^^
But in English, some people refer to Old English as archaic, formal, and dramatic. Though not a perfect representation, I don’t think the translator is wrong if they want to express the author’s explicit intent to formalize a character’s speech by using a ‘formal’ Old English version explicitly.
It’s along the same lines as indicated in Synth’s reply. The author started using 您 and other more respectful terms back in Volume 5 (when GZ and GYTH arrived on the Central Continent). So whenever you see terms like thou, thee, and so on, it’s because I want to preserve the author’s intent without having to resort to spelling it out with other adjectives. “Show don’t tell” as they say.
Of course, feel free to make suggestions, and I will take them into consideration. 👍
And obviously even though you’re translating it in english, they are in China right now although it’s country a and city b for certain reasons, we all know it’s still china so you feel the need to address those words but it kinda breaks the immersion because it’s an old language and even though they technically were in a martial arts era then, they are in the modern era now and people really wouldn’t be using that even in high society since it stopped being used even in the 1800.
I think adding thee, thou, thy, makes it more american in a way which takes away from the Chinese setting and makes it more awkward since they don’t pertain to giving respect, it’s more of a poetic / religious / old fashioned thing.
In my opinion you can address that respect by simply adding Mr, sir, mister, in the start of the sentences, and anything more than that can come across as redundant sometimes.
Sorry for being so picky translator this is my favorite novel rn and you are one of my favorite translators and it’s been really nice reading from your translations, just been really distracted by these I hope you don’t take offense in anyway.
Thank you for your input. I understand that the usage of these terms in this situation breaks immersion, and you make a good point that this is the modern world (China). I’ll probably make a retroactive change for this volume, but when everyone goes back to the Central Continent and so on, the terms will return, too.
Thank you this is literally
