Chapter 94 u0Fl8E

After bringing me to the POW camp, Yukimura didn’t leave immediately but instead brought me into a prison cell to be alone with him, which wasn’t surprising as it seemed like he had things he wanted to ask me but couldn’t due to Shinichi’s presence. Using the reasoning of interrogating me alone as a cover, he managed to shoo away the other soldiers, closing the door and using a lighter to light up an oil lamp.

The dim light illuminated Yukimura’s delicate features, light reflecting in his eyes. He cautiously glanced out the window, then back to me, as though thinking on how to approach the topic.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

I didn’t push him to voice his question because I knew if I did, he would go back to Shinichi’s side, so I could only wait, just until he loses his patience, and bet that he holds some sort of affection towards Asura. I adjusted the large garment I was wearing, leisurely tightening the buttons, settling down on an iron chair right beside me. Yukimura seemed pretty nervous, like instead of me, it was him who was being interrogated. With how the tables have turned, I found it somewhat hilarious. Through the glow of the fire, I looked at Yukimura face to face and couldn’t help but feel that someone with eyes like this, doesn’t belong in this sort of place. He’s a kindhearted, albeit indecisive Japanese boy who doesn’t dare disobey his father, someone who shouldn’t be involved in such a cruel and filthy place filled with conspiracy, yet fortunately he isn’t a pessimistic person.

“Mister… Yukimaru?” I hesitantly broke the awkward silence. ELznPi

He heaved a sigh as though he had just woken up from a dream before taking the oil lamp and sat down by my side. “How should I address you?”

“Desharow Wallace”

“Alright, Mr Desharow.” Yukimura spared me a glance before turning towards the oil lamp, speaking slowly. “I’m aware that you’re the silver mermaid. How do you know my name? How do you morph your appearance into that of a human? I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before.”

“We did meet before. Before… you died.” I sucked in a deep breath, getting straight to the point with the simplest Japanese sentence. I asked in a sincere tone, “Mr Yukimaru, do you Japanese believe in the idea of fate and reincarnation?”

It’s possible that upon hearing my words, it’d be incomprehensible at first, but I had a gut feeling that told me Yukimura would be able to understand what I was trying to get at, otherwise he wouldn’t have brought me here.

“Death?” Yukimura repeated this word. Alas, I saw his face didn’t display any sign of disbelief. He inclined his head, his eyes lowered in thought. “Indeed, we do believe in it. I always have a certain dream, and in that dream I was a mermaid, swimming in solitude through the sea, but apart from me, there was another mermaid by my side, as constant as it is, I’m unable to see his face. However, on the night my father dispatched me to… lure that group of mermaids, I encountered a purple tailed mermaid, I realized something, that the merman in my dreams was him.” He spoke in a low, dreamlike voice, his eyes shone with the slight flicker of the fire, face flushed, with his eyelashes fluttering like the wings of a butterfly due to unclear emotions.

I could see that Yukimura’s interests were piqued regarding his fateful encounter, not to mention the innate charisma that mermen carried. But when I thought back to their bitter ending in my original timeline, my heart sank.

“But at the same time, I had an odd feeling in my gut. That night, I had a nightmare. In the dream, fires were raging, and there were so many people dead, blood spilled everywhere… A scene straight from hell. I’m unable to recall just what happened in the dream, but it has impacted me a lot, and I’m really scared.” Once Yukimura spoke, his gaze turned to rest upon my face, eyelids rising calmly, speaking in a soft tone. “The moment I met you, I felt like you had the answers to my dream. Is that correct, Mr Desharow?” RA8ptV

I went still for a few seconds, only replying after sorting through my thoughts. “I’m not sure if you’ll believe me entirely. These dreams of yours are events that happened in the timeline of the future, so of course you’d be able to understand the fate of that life. If you don’t take the chance to change the story, then the scary things you saw in your dream would recur, you will drown in your nightmare, Asura and you will be extremely miserable. I saw your ending with my own two eyes.”

“Rebel against your father, release the mermaids that have been captured and leave this place with Asura.” I walked forward and held his shoulders, saying it word by word.

Yukimura’s expression changed immediately, as though the words I said something tabboo. He pulled out the katana that was hanging on his waist all of the sudden, the cold light gleamed and the blade was already by my neck, glares of warm and cold light danced around his face, his expression a little complex. “Mr Desharow, are you aware of what you’re saying! You want me to turn against my father, to betray my family?” ftgIHC

“Yes, Mr Yukimura.” I spat out and stared into his eyes, my hand grabbed onto the cold blade of the katana. “I don’t believe in fate, rather I believe that I can change it with my own hands. In this game if you try to take one step forward, it might just become a death match. I don’t know how much value you place in your family. But Mr Yukimaru, do heed me. Releasing those mermaids is not only beneficial to you and Asura, but at the same time it might just save your whole family. This is your choice, I have no right to interfere, please do decide.”

He scrunched his eyebrows, and when his eyes swept over to the blade in my hand, I discreetly lowered my hand. (I don’t want to lose any of my fingers.) He swiftly sheathed his sword back into its scabbard and walked out the door hurriedly just as fast, closing the metal door with a bang. At this moment, a shiny metal object fell onto the floor from a small gap, you’d think that this was unintentional.

But I knew that it wasn’t what it seemed like. I walked behind the door, squatting. When I picked up the key, I started laughing involuntarily. A few moments passed, and I heard a series of footsteps retreating their way back here. I place my bets on Yukimura. He stopped in front of the entrance, hesitating a little before finally speaking. “For example you hear some gunshots, Mr Desharow, we’ll meet in the thicket near the concentration camp. Use your bird-like pitch to state your position.”
“I understand.” Nodding my head.

After Yukimura had left, I found some torture equipment that was left lying around in the cell, some in particular could be use as a weapon for self-defense, so I picked up a iron hammer that could still be used and sat down against the closed metal door, resting, waiting quietly for the right moment to come. My nose was filled with the prison cell’s cold scent of blood, this sort of odor seemed capable of even freezing my blood but I was unfeeling, I knew I had to be ready to kill and what I should do, especially if I encounter a roadblock when I’m on my way to meet Yukimura. AgFhEG

I weighed the hammer in my hand, subconsciously tapping it on the ground lightly as my jaw tightened,

I didn’t know how much time had passed but before I knew it, out the window the sky had already turned dark and it was clamorous.Sound of a line of soldiers marching came from near far, and finally I heard the sound of several gunshots echoing from far away, and in the horizon were fiery blazes, the hissing of planes and the hail of bullets was deafening, the cell that I was in shook in an instant and my whole body was covered with dust.

It was time. I bent over the window glancing outside, only to realize that there were no soldiers guarding the area, so I immediately turned towards the metal door and unlocked it with the key. In my opposite direction is the concentration camp where POWs were held at, and on my left was the somber forest. Concealing myself, I observed my surroundings with vigilance before sprinting the whole time into the forest. The towering trees served as a good cover, keeping me shrouded in darkness. I widened my eyes in concentration, using my excellent night vision to search for Yukimura’s figure while sounding out imitations of bird calling as he had instructed prior, “kaka, kaka!”. I got a reply immediately. I chased after the sound, perhaps I was moving too fast in the dark as Yukimura jolted with shock when I appeared before him.

“Mr Desharow, the way you run is just as fast as how mermaids swim in the water!” kTaijA

“Well, that’s a given.”

He drew back the katana he had just unsheathed and cautiously looked around. Without much nonsense, he turned around and led me into the depth of the woods. With the consistent cannons going off in the background, the forest was considerably quiet, underneath the shadows of the trees, there was an indescribable tension and neither me nor Yukimura spoke as we continued cutting through the thorns of the bushes, the undergrowth made some frightening rustling sounds as we advanced forward.

After walking in the forest for awhile, the outline of a grey building gradually appeared, it seems to be the air-raid shelter’s tunnel that I previously entered from but now it’s the rear end and not far from us, was a locked sliding door, but Yukimura didn’t bring me closer to it but instead he crouched down and started grope the ground looking for something. I instantly took notice that underneath his feet and dirt was a hidden metal hatch, it was clear that this was a hidden passage to the air-raid shelter as well as serving as the best escape route from those mermaids.

I followed Yukimura down the hidden hatch, going down the ladder and soon after, we had reached the interior of the shelter. In the long and narrow tunnel, the path was illuminated by series of pale lamps, with the light being reflected on the metal wall, it gave a cold luster to it, to which I couldn’t help but feel suffocated, it was like I was entering the mouth of a human-eating beast with Yukimura. As we reached the first corner, from far away, I was hit in the face with the smell of metal that the wind carried along with it, and I sort of heard a scream as well. I couldn’t stop the shiver that went down my spine. 8WR5lk

At the same time, Yuimura stopped walking and we simultaneously looked at each other eye to eye, his complexion was deathly pale as he looked into the depths of the tunnel, fear being shown in his eyes while breathing harshly like it was winter exuding a slight chilliness. “My father is an extremely cruel and cold-blooded person, he often conducts inhumane experiments, so you best prepare your heart.”
I nodded my head and swallowed dryly, sudden panic surged through my heart as I worried about Agares’s safety. Even though he pretended to be paralyzed before, who knew what could happen to him while in the hands of these cruel Japanese.

At this moment, footsteps could be heard from the corner of the tunnel and Yukimura dragged me down to crouch, and then he took out a prior placed glass from within his sleeve. A quick glimpse told me that the two people approaching were crew members from the experimentalist group. The moment they arrived, Yukimura and I simultaneously sprang into action like a duo, knocking them onto the ground before they had a chance to react and make a sound.

Going deeper into the tunnel, faint screams mixed with the wind became clearer and clearer, with that I knew that Shinichi’s labraratory was closeby and I couldn’t help but to hold my breath. We once again turned into a corner and what appeared in front was a transparent sliding curtain, its surface tinged with spots of dark liquid and you could see the vague outline of some operating tables.

We both slowed down our pace. I gripped onto my hammer tightly and Yukimura unsheathed his katana to carefully as well as slowly part the plastic screen, and the strong scent of blood immediately hit my nose like a ferocious beast, I was blinded in an instant by the ghastly sight laid in front of me, stunning me on the spot, my stomach churned over and over like the rivers and sea whereas Yukimaru took in a deep whiff and retched. 5gnxdV

——Lying above the several operating tables were neatly aligned corpses of mutilated mermaids, both male and female, all of them had their eyes gouged out, stomachs cut open with their organs taken out, flaps of skin and flesh were left dangling loosely from both sides of the operating table, dripping droplets that formed into a dense puddle of dark-purple blood. In addition, next to the operating table was an average-sized wash basin and in it, was filled with blood-red water full of a dozen pale remnants of humans, and floating on the surface was mould that seemed like hair. There was a nauseating smell of formalin hanging in the air, it was like a knife cutting through both me and Yukimura’s mind, it was like it could make us go crazy anytime in this place.

Yet, we had to force ourselves to remain calm. I covered my mouth, withholding the urge to puke and walked with Yukimura, passing the operating tables one by one, and after confirming that the two guys we were looking for were not among them, we quickly took off from this hellish place and walked inside the laboratory. After Yukimura opened a password-controlled iron door, an even more spacious artificial cave appeared inside. In the grooves of the walls had nearly a hundred sealed glass tanks housing the surviving mermaids. There were only 10 or so remaining, the light in their eyes held either fear, sorrow and hatred, and in an instant, all their eyes fell on Yukimaru and myself, like they were about to rip us to shreds. I couldn’t help worrying that once we released these young ones, they would come attacking us. Fortunately, Agares would be able to protect me in time.

Holding this thought, my gaze flickered among the mermaids but I couldn’t see any traces of Agares, my heart suddenly tightened. “Mr Yukimaru, where’s the black-scaled merman that accompanied me?!”

“He had already escaped. Just as when my father was about to conduct experiments on him, he went and attack the soldiers within the air-raid shelter, which was unexpected for everyone thought he’d be under anesthesia, then he took the first batch of mermaids that we had experimented, thus why there are only a few left in here, look, there’s Asura.”
My heart constricted as Yukimura pointed towards a closed tank in the far left, only then did I realized a merman lying on his side in the tank, seemingly hurt while his eyes were closed shut, it was really Asura. drBnk

Yukimura looked at him and his complexion turned pale. “I… can’t bare to face him. He saved my life once before, yet I repaid him by listening to my father’s command to trap, to trick and imprison him here to be abused. He must feel bitter towards me, for I’m a treacherous, cunning human being.” After speaking, he immediately walked towards a row of switches that appears to be responsible for opening the doors of the tank. He shot me a look of hesitation before opening the doors belonging to Asuras.

At this moment from beyond the walls, a series of messy footsteps came from near and far. My heart screamed at the terrible timing. Yukimaru grabbed my arm and glanced at Asura’s direction. “I’ll go out to block my father and the rest, Mr Desharow, please take Asura out of this place. Go out from where we came from, take a detour from the shelter and head into the jungle, once passing through it then it should be the ocean. If I can find a way to get out…”

He didn’t finish his sentence and gritted his teeth. I nodded knowingly in order to reassure him. He immediately released my hand, and turned to walk out without looking back.

The instant I unlocked the tanks, all the imprisoned younglings came scuttling out and miraculously flock around me. I felt that it was because my body was emitting their leader’s scent. I glanced at Asura as he struggled hard coming out from his tank, one of his shoulders was littered with terrifying gunshot wounds, his flesh lacerated, this obviously hindered his movements by a lot, but he was fast to catch up to my lead. IURQgd

Yukimura’s distraction seemed to work pretty well because our journey had been pretty smooth so far, from the place where we started to this devilish tunnel. At this timing, the sound of fighting became more intense, the fire around the sea even dappled through the dense forest and fell on us who were hidden in the shadows, the younglings fled like a group of pythons as fast as lightning, leaving me who was acting as a temporary leader behind, at this moment I heard a string of voices behind me.

I whipped my head back and saw that it was Asura. He was moving at an exceptionally slow pace, the gunshot wound he sustained was affecting his ability to balance, so he could only stagger along like an elderly person, and from time to time, he stumbled over either rocks or vines and almost fell over.

I rushed over to his side and helped him lean back against a big tree.

In the dark of the night, his face was green and pale but with his natural born sharp features, it made him appear like he didn’t feel pain. I couldn’t help feeling that he was inexplicably similar to Agares, but I couldn’t pinpoint what was. Perhaps they held a natural born dangerous aura. He didn’t look evil like that damned Agares, rather at a glance, people would describe him as a demon from the abyss. bOaomM

“Is it salvageable? We have to be quick, Yukimaru… He’s waiting for you.” I patted Asura on his shoulders then placed my palm above his heart, thankful that his heart was strongly beating, the gunshot that he sustained didn’t endanger his life. Oh, thank heaven and earth.

“Yukimaru…” Asura said this name, his eyes brightening a little. He propped himself against the tree, wanting to raise his tail again but just as he raised his arm, his shoulders drooped and I immediately made him leaned back against the tree, carefully examining the gunshot wounds, only now did I realized that the bullets was stuck in his flesh and had to be taken out for his self-healing to work and the only person who can help him now, was me.

“I’ll help you take out the thing in your wound.” I lifted my head to glance at Asura, he sniffed my scent like he was confirming my relationship with Agares before closing his eyelids, nodding his head. I buried myself into his shoulders without hesitation and Asura immediately froze, I could only imagine how painful it must be. I forcefully sucked out the bullets and gently squeezed his swollen muscles. A few pieces of shrapnel landed in my mouth effortlessly, but I felt like there was a bigger one that laid underneath.

I spat out the metallic blood and shrapnel, wiped my mouth and repeated the action. Asura did his best to cooperate by straightening his tail and lifting his shoulders to make it easier for me to continue my administration, and for the sake of balancing, he gently placed his webbed claws on my back, though this might have made it look like he was embracing me at a glance, but I didn’t had time to ponder on it. ONguzA

Just as I was about to finish, I heard sounds of rustling beside me that came rushing towards us from within the forest. Before I had time to see what caused the sound, a shadowed figure emerged out from behind the big tree Asura was leaning on. In a split second, a low roar sounded by my ear, and a pale webbed claw wrapped around Asura’s neck like when a viper suddenly attacks!

I slumped onto the ground, as my vision refocused, I realized that it was Agares. He obviously came back from the sea to look for me.

He furiously glared at Asura seemingly thinking of choking him half to death, blue veins protrude out underneath his skin at the back of his claws while Asura just heaved deeply with his tail brandishing frantically on the grass, I really had no doubt that Agares really wanted to murder Asura. “Hey, Agares, you’re misunderstanding something! I was only tending to his wound!”

I got up in a flurry and shouted, wrapping both my arms around Agares’s large sturdy tail, holding him back desperately. Damn it, heaven knows just how possessive he is about me! This is really bad! e6UXAR

My efforts were on deaf ears as Agares paid my words no heed as he wrapped his tail around my body, dragging me behind him, forcing me away from Asura. I know that if I don’t try my best, Asura would lose his life today by the hands of Agares. I quickly held onto a tree trunk and rolled my body, barely freeing myself from these strong shackles. I jumped over his tail and sprang over to a big tree, and I swore that at that moment, my movements were even better than a special ops officer. Unfortunately, I was too hasty in my actions because I hit my head onto the tree trunk, resulting in me almost fainting. Though fortunately, Agares’s movements suddenly stopped and all his focus was on my body.

He finally released the claw he was holding Asura with, his tail curling down around my lower body, lifting the bruised and battered me up, squinting his eyes to examine my forehead, his dark pupils filled with adoration and concern. At that moment I instantly realized that the original Agares was indeed regaining consciousness. However when I wanted to voice my question, Agares’s mouth pressed onto my forehead, using his tongue to go over my inflamed bruise, then he moved towards the bridge of my nose, grinning slightly, then he used his fangs and bit my lips with the implications of a punishment, his dripping wet claws grabbed onto the my nape, shooting a warning over to Asura.

I’m obeying Agares and was nervous, so I didn’t dare move but my eyes inadvertently shifted to meet Asura’s frightened expression, and a single thought crossed my head. Oh god, for this ruthless fellow to become jealous was really scary.

Ahah! Happy April’s Fool! Well, rather than a prank, this is a pleasant surprise isn’t it? Hahah ^^
