Yuichiro turned his gaze away from Goat and onto the enemy camp. “Burn those traitors to the ground,” he said as he stared at the wavering torchlight. Following his command, the platoon commanders lowered their heads and responded in unison, “Yes, sir!”

Yuichiro walked with long strides, dressed in a military outfit that smelled vaguely of blood. To mask any signs of impatience or uneasiness, he advanced slowly to the enemy camp with long steps and a stately gait. He walked with ease while carrying the current world’s single-shot rifle on his shoulder and wrapped bandana around his head along with a pair of goggles, said to be for shooting; around his eyes.

Yama, Belz, and Temeraire, who had his hair done up in a knot bun, trailed close after him. The guys behind him, particularly Yama, maintained a solemn, unhappy countenance, in contrast to Belz, who showed no signs of apprehension, periodically lifting his hand to greet any enemy soldier who passed by.

Yuichiro was relieved that he had brought Belz with him when he watched this. This was due to the fact that when he and Yama stood side by side, their sharp appearance made them stand out among the enemy soldiers. However, once Belz’s calm demeanor entered the scene, they were able to blend in much more seamlessly with their surroundings. qrFzop

Perhaps because the full-scale siege had not yet begun there was little sense of urgency among the soldiers. This could be because there were still few casualties on the enemy’s side. At the very least, the distinct odor of blood and gunpowder smoke on the battlefield was muffled. They continued advancing diagonally down from the center of the enemy camp. Right before entering a specific camp, Temeraire voiced out, “Rondo-sama often sets up his banner and command post in the center of the military base. However, oftentimes, his actual command post was placed in the rear while pretending it was placed in the center. In addition, even if his command post is in the rear, he has a strong tendency for choosing a place that will provide him the best escape route when withdrawing.”

“He’s pretty weak-willed,” Yuichiro said honestly, forcing Temeraire to twist his mouth corners and giggle.

“Rondo-sama is indeed a typical ‘pampered prince’ as Yuichiro-sama said. While the prince is filled with nothing but vanity inside, however, he is also a very petty man. He has no choice but to strung along behind his older brother, Edward-sama. Ah…”

“That’s quite a beheading statement against the prince,” Yuichiro chimed, teasing Temeraire. The man raised his cheek as if mocking Yuichiro’s jest. “Only if Rondo-sama had the guts to behead me,” Temeraire countered Yuichiro’s sarcasm. In the end, they were both being snarky toward each other.

Overall, those who put themselves on the battlefield often suffer some kind of depression or warped emotions inside. Otherwise, it would be impossible for them to kill people as if they were objects.

Under Temeraire’s lead, Yuichiro maneuvered his way past the enemy camp. Unexpectedly, however, he heard a jubilant cheer coming from afar. He came to a halt and turned his head towards the direction of the noise. “What is it?” Temeraire whispered agitatedly.

“It doesn’t look like anything we’d be delighted about,” Yama spoke bitterly.

Simultaneously, Belz stopped an enemy soldier who passed by his side and asked him what was going on but failed to receive a clear answer. QFBoCm

Yuichiro continued speaking, “At any rate, we will proceed with the operation unless we can identify a clear deterrent,” and started walking again. After continuing to advance through the enemy camp, he saw a particularly large camp, erected at some distance from the other camps. There were only two soldiers who looked like guards near the camp, acting as deterrents to disperse the people near the area. When they stopped in the shadow of a distant camp, Yuichiro asked Temeraire briefly, “Is that it?”

“Yes, probably.”

“Then let’s take a gamble and hope the mastermind is in there,” Yuichiro responded while feeling goosebumps on his skin, and then turned his gaze toward Yama and Belz, continuing, “Yama, Belz, don’t let them raise their voices,” pointing straight at the guards, commanding them.

Yama arched his eyebrow, indicating as if he did not want to go out of his way to do such a trivial thing. Belz prodded him on the shoulder as if chastising his attitude, and replied quickly to Yuichiro, “Understood.” OXZLYT

A while later, Belz made his first move. With leisurely steps, he approached the guards carelessly and said, “Hey, good work. Isn’t it about time I took over?”

“Ahhh?? It’s not time for your shift yet.”

Belz did not waste a single moment when the guards looked perplexed. In a split second, Yuichiro was unable to follow Belz’s fluid and rapid movement after the man took out the spear, he was carrying on his back. Belz flung out the spear he was clutching without waiting for his opponent to blink. The moment the guard blinked; the spear’s tip had already been buried directly in his throat. The guard spat up a mouthful of blood while looking stunned.

As the other guard looked on, he opened his mouth to yell, but no sound escaped from his throat. In contrast, only a whistling sound leaked out of his throat, which cracked like overripe fruit. Before the guard comprehend his state, his throat had been slit into a straight line. In front of him stood Yama, cleaving his sword. As if to avoid making a sound, Yama caught the fallen body and tossed him into a pile of haystacks nearby. After concealing the bodies with haystacks, Yama and Belz both looked at Yuichiro at the same time. Then, they pointed with one arm at the entrance of the camp, gesturing for him to come in. It was a very deliberate gesture. Yuichiro approached the two with an extraordinarily sluggish pace. ZjGVB6

Yuichiro then whispered, “Both of you are quite… nimble.”

Yama snorted in response while Belz’s smile deepened and hung his head in silence.

“When I move, you move,” Yuichiro spoke and took a deep breath in front of the camp. With one arm he lifted the thick canvas that covered the entrance to the camp, and shouted out loudly, “Message! Urgent message!”

His voice immediately elicited a startled look from the five men inside the camp, who all stared at the unexpected guest. One man, in particular, was interrupted by Yuichiro when he was about to bring blue fruit resembling a grape to his mouth at a table in the middle of the camp. The man had curly white hair that reached his ears and a pair of crisp, double-lid eyes that seemed artificial in Yuichiro’s eyes. When Yuichiro observed him closely, the man was indeed a beautiful young man, only if he looked at the upper half of the man’s face. In truth, the corner of one side of the man’s mouth was strangely crooked, slightly giving him a mean-looking appearance. Yuichiro twitched his mouth uncomfortably. l4ap8R

Another man stood beside the table, his hands rubbed together as if he was a wealthy merchant flattering the evil magistrate. As for this man, his white hair which stretched all the way down to his ear was parted in the middle, and his eyes drooped as if he was constantly agitated by something. Despite this, he had a sly smile plastered on his face.

The remaining three men in the camp, however, were clad in armor and stood behind the man in the chair. Seeing this, Yuichiro assumed they were the man’s guards. Simultaneously, Yuichiro quickly scanned the scenery inside the camp, and he desperately held back the laughter that was about to burst. Inside, the camp was decorated with radical extravagance beyond anyone’s imagination, which made it hard to believe that he was on a battlefield. The white animal hide placed beneath his foot, along with an abundance of food and confectionaries on the polished marble table, gave the impression that it was a dinner party rather than a battlefield.

“W-Who is it?! It’s rude to enter Rondo-sama’s command post without permission!” the wealthy merchant lookalike yelled. His voice trembled with agitation, giving a glimpse of his vindictive behavior. From the fact that the man called out “Rondo-sama,” Yuichiro quickly deduced that the man sitting down was indeed Rondo as his previous assumption.

In the next moment, Yuichiro dropped to one knee and bowed his head, speaking up, “I truly apologize for the interruption. However, this is an urgent message.” SjE9ed

Afterward, he heard a loud sigh of exasperation. As he raised his head, he saw Rondo dumping the fruit into his mouth with a troublesome expression on his face. His gesture exuded vanity as if the man was attempting to make himself appear larger than he was.

“What is it, tell me.”

Yuichiro instantly replied, “Yes. However… I’ve been ordered to deliver the message to Rondo-sama’s ears only,” glancing sideways at the merchant lookalike, with Rondo waving his arm languidly.

“Nikolai is my aide. It makes no difference, so talk quickly.” XEs2yd

The name Nikolai sounded familiar. Apparently, the merchant lookalike was Goat’s brother, the traitor who sold out his family.

“I beg your pardon, Rondo-sama, but is he Nikolai Folg-Goat?” Yuichiro asked quickly, causing Nikolai’s shoulders to shake momentarily as if frightened. Nevertheless, Nikolai’s faint smile did not disappear from his mouth. Instead of it being an expression, the smile was already part of his face.

Rondo answered in a slightly irritated tone, “What about it?”

“I have heard that family members of Goat are royalists. I mean no disrespect, but I cannot deliver an important message in the presence of such a man,” Yuichiro replied hesitantly, causing Rondo’s eyes to squint twitchingly. vAHpTU

“Are you doubting my aide’s loyalty? If that is the case, I will consider it treason against me.”

Yuichiro bowed his head once more when he heard the shrill angry voice. “I sincerely apologize. My mission, however, is to deliver the message directly to Rondo-sama without letting anyone else know. I will humbly accept any punishments that may come later. Please allow me to fulfill my mission.”

Rondo’s vein popped at Yuichiro’s unyielding statement as if he had to humble himself for Yuichiro, who did not bend to his will. Nonetheless, he gritted his teeth for a few seconds, and lightly waved his arm for Nikolai to back away. Nikolai’s face contorted in response to Rondo’s gesture, but he stepped back quietly.

“Come closer,” Rondo spat out words grudgingly. 3YkdUb

“Yes, sir,” Yuichiro responded succinctly before approaching and kneeling at the man’s feet.

In a hurry, Rondo ordered, “Say it now,” as he brought his face closer to Yuichiro’s.

In that moment, Yuichiro silently stared at Rondo’s profile. He paused for a moment, thinking that the man’s ear in front of him resembled Noah’s. Afterward, he quietly opened his lips with an indifferent expression on his face, “

“If you don’t withdraw now, you’ll all end up on the ground in a pile of fire.” CQ h6d

At Yuichiro’s offhand words, Rondo frowned in displeasure, as if to say ‘What?’ But when he noticed Yuichiro’s blank expression as he looked up at him, his complexion instantly turned pale. Before he could say anything, Yuichiro instantly pulled out a pocketknife strapped to the back of his waist with his right hand. Not a sooner later, he thrusted the tip of his knife near the man’s lower jaw. As a result, Rondo stiffened, his mouth gaping open.

“Ro-, Rondo-sama!!!” Although Nikolai was the one who shouted first, the guards were quicker to respond. The guard’s movement, however suddenly halted as he was about to draw his sword. When Yuichiro blinked his eyes once, he could see the tip of a spear protruding from the guard’s stomach. The spear was actually coming from behind the man, through the curtain. It belonged to Belz.

The thick curtain that covered the camp was ripped vertically as the impaled guard looked down at his stomach in confusion. Moments later, Yama jumped through the opened curtain slit. In response, the remaining guards hurriedly drew their swords, but unknowingly for them, Yama was much quicker than them. The moment Yama swung his sword, a head flew off from the guard who was holding the hilt of his own sword at the time. As a result, a fountain of blood erupted, staining the white fabric of the camp’s curtain.

Later, the last remaining guard charged himself at Yama, but Yama quickly ducked, changed his posture, and used his right leg to kick the guard’s kneecap. Soon after, the guard’s face contorted and fell to the ground with impact. Yama took advantage of the situation by quickly aiming his sword at the guard’s heart and thrusting his sword down. Within the next moment, a sword was deeply buried into the guard’s back, like a lone silver wing. While gasping, Yama then tossed the dead guard’s body to the floor, as if removing a sandbag that had gotten in his way. In a matter of seconds, the camp was engulfed in the stench of blood. F ms9t

“Hiiiii!!!!!!!!!”

Translator's Note

The direct translation for this phrase from the Japanese raw is Echigoya selling flattery to the evil magistrate. Echigoya here refers to a wealthy merchant in Edo period, and ‘flattering’ basically means bribing activities. As for the rubbed hands motion, you can refer to the image below.

Translator's Note

I think the author meant that Nikolai often wears a crooked smile, probably like ass-kissing people superior to him to gain favor.
