  1. Oh man. As a reader even I wasn’t questioning. Even after that whole bit in a previous chapter about the island quieting the boys down. Leave it to father Song’s regression to stir up enough ‘normal, everyday’ kind of trouble with his son that Xiwei notices things aren’t right.

    • Yes. I think there’s a parallel between us as observers and Zhou Xiwei as a participant–

We both really like the idea of the island becoming docile (and I think it mostly is, like a wolfhound puppy that’s raised by people and is mostly domestic, but can still snap when stimulated). But we also both ultimately benefit in seeking the truth, instead of staying with the lie. Growing pains are part of growing up, after all!🌺

      • Hahaha and now I’m trying to imagine Uto as that puppy. Bringing Xiwei ‘presents’ like my cats do sometimes, all the while wagging its tail at him and growling at everyone else. If Uto was that puppy, at this point in the story, it’d have Haoyu’s cracks …and maybe extra tails or something.

  2. the calm took place so naturally it’s hard to notice that’s it’s actually abnormal given the circumstances they are in

    • Soft control is harder to notice or stop than a firm hand. Especially when we (including Zhou Xiwei) can say ‘Well, everything is abnormal, why not also this?’

  3. Yeah, I thought that his older brother just had some bit of sad since he’s not used to do nothing. Didn’t thought it was Uto, I was even thinking “damn the island has claimed down except for Papa Song” HOW WRONG I WAS. And I love how the relationship between Shan Titian and Uto is freaking wholesome … In the author’s note

    • Song Bai definitely is morose due to inactivity, but the level of inactivity is probably being supplemented by the island, making him sadder and safer in equal measure. Of course, the island’s thinking makes sense, in a very childish way– ‘Oh, Zhou Xiwei doesn’t want anyone hurt? Okay, then just use dreams and lethargy to make them unlikely to act! Bumps on the log rarely end up in life-and-death struggles, after all!’

…I just realized Uto would be the most confusing copy in an Unlimited Flow novel. All the big guys would be avoiding death at every turn while cursing their luck, while all the little scared novices would be doing perfectly well (other than the tension of waiting for the shoe to drop). Probably only the middling players would be in real danger, but everyone’s psyches would take a shock.

  4. I had the thought that without the crush standing in the way, Zhou Xiwei could offer Song Bai a shoulder that sincerely reflects the comfort Song Bai has always given him as a brother. But it’s possible that the crush added some warmth that Song Bai doesn’t get anywhere else.

I am impressed with how accurately you’ve captured the frustration of being very smart and/or capable and having brain fog or fatigue reduce it to useless. Even I wanted to hug him (naked in the shower).

  5. Reading while I listen to all of Miley Cyrus’s contemplative songs and the effect is very therapeutic. I’m adding this to my practice. Reading is healing and your books are life. That’s is. (Also this poor island is working so hard. Just wants a better version of everyone’s self. I’m an empath and a recluse, so I think I’d thrive on Uto :))

  6. Is it crazy that I’m drawing parallels with how Uto is manipulating the group with him Father Song planned to try to ‘ease’ ZX into getting a “real” wife in the future? No wonder he’s the only one not caught up in the spell when he’s so intimately familiar with the tactic!
