The Southern PrinceChapter 8

Editors: MaryJ and Zinan

The first rays of the sun spilt over the horizon as a soft, subtle breeze swept through the Apricot courtyard. Not far up above the trees, rested a flock of various coloured birds with chilli like beaks that tweeted away singing a morning melody. Below, stood an enormous garden that was complimented by a dazzling array of pink flowers. The many pink flowers secreting a pleasant fragrance filled the whole courtyard with fresh smelling air. uBdZ0F

The sturdy, brown branches of the huge apricot tree which stood in the middle, swung with the wind as if greeting the new day. Small, vibrant butterflies danced all around the courtyard looking for sweet nectar and among them stood a young man who looked to be around ages seventeen to sixteen years. His slender brows and almond eyes looked relaxed, his black irises looked like a whirlpool in the middle of a white sea and his pale pink lips tender as can be. Even his hair danced in tune to the morning melody sung by the birds. The young man looked to be in harmony with his surroundings. Yi Qian was caught off guard by this scene when he entered the Apricot courtyard. He knew that Viramalla was a mesmerising beauty who no one could outmatch and so he didn’t pay much attention to his younger brother. It seemed like the Pallava genes were quite exquisite. Without his elder brother, Simha who wasn’t overshadowed emitted a confident aura. Yi Qian and Simha decided to look around the morning market for today. After spending a whole morning with Simha, Yi Qian learned his lesson. Appearance can be deceiving. You have to look at a thing long enough for it to really show itself to you.

The lovely teenager was dissatisfied with everything and anything. Since they did not hide their identities, wherever they went a crowd would form to watch curiously. It took a lot of persuading on Yi Qian’s part to bring the second prince to the food stall. By the time they reached the stall, Yi Qian was starving so when he saw their country’s prince look so happy and relaxed whilst eating, all the grievances that he had bottled up came pouring out. He was so mad. He could have spent his time having fun somewhere before going off to the border or at the very least he could be looking for his future wife but this unreliable prince just had to drag him down. What was even more infuriating was the fact that the prince seemed to be having a good time while he suffered.

How could the second prince just walk over and greet them when they were still wearing the commoner’s disguise? It was very obvious from their disguise that they did not want anyone to know their identity. Simha then unceremoniously took a seat next to his elder brother and seeing Yi Qian still standing, he gestured to him leaving Yi Qian no choice but to go forward.

Yi Qian greeted both the princes. “Yi Qian greets the Pallavan prince and Your hig– General Yue.” phew! He almost said Your highness. Viramalla nodded to him and signalled him to take a seat. Yi Qian cautiously took a seat beside Sui Junhui under the latter’s scorching glare. If looks could kill then Yi Qian would’ve already been dead ten times over now. Sui Junhui seemed really pissed about the interruption in the middle of his self proclaimed ‘date’. He glared at his incapable subject before reluctantly greeting Simha.

The shopkeeper of the food stall was frightened after hearing Simha’s greeting. He did not know that the two people sitting in the corner of his humble stall were people of royalty. He quickly went forward with cold sweat.

“Your highness, forgive this humble one for not taking note of both your esteemed presences. If you are not satisfied with the food this humble one can make another set.”

Viramalla quickly replied seeing his nervous posture.

“You do not have to fret. The food really is delicious.”

Viramalla suddenly felt a little hot behind his ears. Although he praised everyone in his heart, the number of times he said that out loud could be counted with one hand. He felt a little embarrassed and quickly turned to his second brother.

“What would second brother like to eat?” wBoATd

Simha knew nothing about Chinese cuisine. He didn’t even know their names. He thought his elder brother was asking this to embarrass him in front of everyone. He was angry at him.

“I will have whatever elder brother is having,” he replied gloomily.

Yi Qian also ordered a bowl of noodles and sent the shopkeeper away. Nobody noticed Simha’s silent anger. They didn’t think anything was wrong with him. Viramalla, feeling awkward, turned to his second brother. He didn’t know his second brother would overthink things.

Seeing Viramalla’s red ears, Sui Junhui was stunned. He did not expect the Pallavan prince who was so tough in the morning battle to be this shy. He felt like a cat was clawing at his heart. This cat seemed to hide behind its paws. All his gloom over having his date interrupted was swept away. His mouth unconsciously curved upwards. When Simha saw this, he thought he was being laughed at and felt angry all over again. DAdsZC

Fortunately, the shopkeeper quickly returned with their orders, distracting Simha with the thought of food. When he saw the other’s eating with chopsticks, he gingerly picked up his own, attempting to imitate them. However, no matter how many times he tried, the noodles always seemed to slip from between his chopsticks making his eyebrows pinch together in frustration. Finally, after struggling for another minute, Yi Qian took pity on him and turned to teach him. Guided by Yi Qian, Simha carefully adjusted his movements before trying again. Although he failed a couple more times, he finally got the hang of it and happily started digging in.

Sui Junhui noticed that Simha took a little while to adjust to using chopsticks. He then doubtfully looked over at Viramalla. Just as he thought, a person who was new at using chopsticks would undoubtedly take at least a minute before adjusting but Viramalla looked like he had been using chopsticks for years. The pang of suspicion grew in his heart as he looked into those familiar hazel brown eyes. His heart felt as if he had known him in the past but his brain quickly denied that feeling, concluding that it was impossible. Sui Junhui’s gaze deepened as he looked at him and vowed to find whatever it was about Viramalla that made him feel that way.

Viramalla felt Sui Junhui’s glance over him and grew nervous. He felt a little sad about not telling him anything but knew it was for the best. There was no way he could say it. He just sighed and continued eating. He showed none of the sorrow he felt outside, at least that was what he thought. Sui Junhui who was looking at him, noticed the sadness and pain in his eyes even though it only remained for a split second. Once again, he felt as if he had done this act of perceiving the other’s emotion from his eyes countless times. Now it was Sui Junhui’s turn to feel frustrated.
