Ew no. Was Meng Yixuan’s instant reaction; thought before even looking at whoever that hand belonged to. When he finally actually saw the person, and the look of confusion on their face, he realised that he said it out loud.
“Right, sorry, that was rude of me.” He spared a quick glance to the surroundings to find that his table was in fact the only table that wasn’t full and nodded to the stranger, “Take a seat.”
The other human slithered into the seat and sat with profound movement, sitting like they owned the place. But maybe that was just their vibe.
“Thank you.” The person’s voice was interesting actually, soft and mellow yet gruff and commanding. Like a natural born leader.
Meng Yixuan watched them closely for a second, finding that the way they couldn’t sit still but could somehow still give off a domineering atmosphere reminded him of “A snake.”
“Oh? And what gave you that impression?” The person dawdled on the words, dragging them out as they looked at him.
“I think it’s intuition. I just had a feeling.”
The human blinked for a second before chuckling softly, “You remind me of my sect master. He said the same thing when we met!”
And they continued to laugh rambunctiously at the memory. It was really cute of him to call a pretty jiejie a snake but it was highly successful in this instance.
Meng Yixuan offered a cheeky grin at her words, prompting her to continue talking, “speaking of the Sect Master, he seems to have disappeared.”
“Disappeared?” Meng Yixuan was somewhat curious, quite unlike him to display an interest in humans but the more you know, I guess.
His intrigue was mainly thanks to his hunger as he waited for the steamed buns he ordered. They were already starting to smell divine, mind you.
“Yep. We were coming back from a very important demoni- ahem sect conference and I turned for one second, one, to admire the flowers and when I looked back, it was like he was never there to begin with. Poof! Vamoosh! Gone, just like that.”
She told the tale in a very interesting way, entertaining him easily with her enthusiastic gestures and totally-not-obvious slip-up. Very good bestie material, he noted for future reference.

“It’s custom to introduce yourself before you ask for someone else’s name, y’know?” She teased him, causing him to grow flustered and she giggled to herself, maybe she really should introduce this little cutie to her sect master, they’d get along swell.
“I- jiejie, that’s- correct. I’m sorry. I am known as Meng Yixuan, from the Swinging Sword Peak of the Righteous Starfall Sect. It is custom to report your peak and sect too right? Well, either way, don’t mind yourself, that’s just my origins and I don’t really mind what jiejie cultivates!”
At that moment, he looked so soft and adorable that she couldn’t help but want to squish his cheeks! Meng Yixuan, he said? Clearly the Meng suited him perfectly!
“Then I’ll call you Xuan Di, how about that, hm? I hail from the Cursed Sunset Sect, serving as the Sect Master’s right hand human. They call me Shejin Huiling, but you may call me Ling Jie.” Her way of talking suddenly became really stiff, and extremely awkward toward the end.
“God, I hate introductions! I always get so funny when I speak for some reason!” Her complaints got a nod of agreement from Meng Yixuan, who truly could resonate with her words.
The two finished their food and parted ways at the door, with a nod of agreement from Meng Yixuan at Shejin Huiling’s “Until we meet again!” She said it was because farewells are icky and too sorrowful a greeting, and he understood where she was coming from so he replied with the same words.
After finally separating, Meng Yixuan finally had a moment to think properly and he finally registered who he just made friends with: the prime elder of the exact sect he wanted to visit.
It made things much simpler if he already had connections there. He was glad he eventually let Ling Jie take that seat or he’d have seemed like an ass to the person his favorite character trusted the most! And he couldn’t have that, definitely not, never!
While somewhat lost in thought, Meng Yixuan still had the smarts to mount his sword and fly directly up onto the peak of the closest hill to him.
Actually, the Baiyu Hills were a bunch of mountains (with all-exclusive white rocks, hence the name) that surrounded a large area covered completely with different plants and a decent selection of wildlife.
The biodiversity was fairly decent when one thought about how it was almost impossible for land beasts to survive the treacherous environment on the mountains and descend down large cliff faces just to get to the bottom.
Most of the creatures in the place were probably brought in by Mag-beasts that decided to store the small things here, including some shiny small critters by accident.
And they’d probably only survived and mated thanks to the large pristine lake also enclosed within the mountains, hidden completely from prying eyes.
Or, well, hidden from anyone who couldn’t fly or best the cliffs. Unfortunately, many had failed and created a plummet count of humans along the edges, which meant that a percentage of the small beasts in the area surrounding the lake were probably man-eating.
Meng Yixuan felt happy that he was a somewhat decent cultivator. Even if he ever became aliven’t or was inflicted with the creatures attempting to gnaw on him, they’d probably fail since cultivator skin is much tougher and more powerful than normal people’s!
Either way, he quickly realised that he’d probably have to go down from the cliff tops and look for the plant he only had a vague knowledge and recollection of.
He felt like if he saw it, he’d know what it was but first he’d actually have to find the plant. And right now, none of the ones he could see seemed quite right. Maybe getting closer would help.
Meng Yixuan directly descended from his sword after that thought, putting it away into its sheath.
He proceeded to search up and down the lanes, looking for the right thing. However, no matter where he went, left or right, up or down, he couldn’t seem to locate the damned thing.
He even searched through all of the knowledge he had and after finding out that they usually grow on cliff tops, proceeded to scour each and every one, on all of the mountains that surrounded the lake to no avail. The plant was nowhere to be seen!
The sun was beginning to set again as dusk was upon him. There would probably be another hour or so before the sky was painted by twilight and then, night would be follow.
He was conflicted for a second, wondering whether he should return directly to the inn or not, but he ultimately decided to continue until the last possible moment.
With that concluded, he got on his sword again to see if it’d be easier to search from the skies. No longer than a minute after he got on the sword, he spotted a crevice in one of the hills and flew towards it.
Upon entering the cave, he realised that he actually did find the exact Qingxin blossoms, that only grew in direct sunlight, that he was looking for, and a whole garden of it.
He picked a bunch and stored them in his earring, along with all the other handfuls of each plant that he’d put in there just in case he needed them in the future. He called it being cautious and preparing for the worst.
Now that he had the plant that he came here for, he decided to return to the inn. Speaking of the inn, he recalled Ling Jie’s question from earlier, “did you find anything off about the inn?”
He was too busy cultivating to notice anything but apparently, she’d heard loud wails, pounding on her door, the sound of shattering glass, and even awoken to blood red handprints all over the walls and on the outside of the window.
It sounded spooky, ticking all the horror movie tropes enough to make him feel eerie. Shaba Village? Something about the phrase made him wonder deeper, he felt like he recognised it but decided to push the thought off until he had time to ponder on it more.
Which was definitely not right now, as the sky was painted orange, because being amongst the nocturnal hungry man-eating demonic beasts would not be smart.
He quickly left the cave and planned to return at the top speed his current cultivation could take him, to the spooky village inn.
Instinct lightly advised against it but he decided that anything was better than here.
However, the universe was against that plan.
Just as Meng Yixuan got on his sword, his ears twitched as he heard a commotion in a location not too far from where he was.
Now, to reiterate, he wasn’t a hero. Definitely not. But he couldn’t just turn his back when he knew that he could help.
Therefore, against the will of every fibre of his being that yelled at him to leave and never turn back, he flew towards the sound as quickly as he could.
I feel so evil for that cliff hanger, I’m like the meanest ever but you guys were just so cute~ ψ(｀∇´)ψ

Exactly! cos, like, bugs and bacteria and fungi and shtuff will try to decompose a body but I assume cultivators remain intact eternally cos their bodies are just conditioned to it. so even if they’re decapitated and split into a trillion pieces, i feel like the trillion pieces would remain in the same condition as when they were cut. therefore, he would at least be in one piece if he became aliven’t 😂 unless, of course, some bad creature with a more powerful cultivation decided to rip a corpse apart, which is a big no-no, not nice!! ＼(｀0´)／
