The sun beamed into the room the next morning, shining warmly onto the pair that still remained cuddled into each other.
Meng Yixuan now felt that the bone-chilling cold from the previous night had disappeared and what replaced it was a glaring light, much too bright to have to wake up to.
He tossed around, groaning in complaint, and buried his face in the soft and fluffy mega pillow below his head, very content that it blocked out the blazing burn that accompanied the bright light.
This action was meant to be accompanied by more sleep, and he truly wished it could’ve been but Meng Yixuan had his priorities straight!
First he had to get Huli Bao those life-saving herbs he may end up needing in the future.
He had already decided to do everything in his power to stop such a cruel plague from inflicting the sect master who had very quickly and easily wormed his way into being some that Meng Yixuan truly cared about.
And the universe would be damned before he let it harm any of his most important people, including the steadily rising list of other demonic beasts and cultivators.
Now that he felt infinitesimally more rejuvenated, he almost wanted to take on the world to do battle!
And by the world, of course he meant Fang Lei! >;3
As he was stuck in his thoughts, he continued to rub his face on the soft pillow that could easily lull him back to sleep if not for his determination.
With this newfound motivation, he decided to single handedly save Huli Bao! (and the extras too, he guessed).
Speaking of Huli Bao, Meng Yixuan wondered, where was he? Hadn’t they been in the same room.
Then he noticed that the softness of the pillow came from the fact that it was well groomed fur. Fur that– he leaned back to look– was dyed the colour of fresh moonlight, reflecting the sun in an almost blinding way.
He soon realised that his soft pillow was the same Huli Bao that he was looking for, and he allowed himself one final cheek rub before the awkwardness settled in.
He retreated slowly from the other’s side, trying not to wake him.
“Awe, no more belly rubs?” The fox teased.
Meng Yixuan put on his best angry face (which was really just a cute pout) and huffed, getting out of the bed and walking towards the door, “no!”
Huli Bao instantly admitted defeat and stood from his perch, trailing quickly behind him and transforming to his human form to grab the other’s hand.
He would’ve simply just grown his fox form but the last time he’d done that, he made a major measurement calculation and now his sect’s hall entrance door was permanently a foot taller and wider than every other one, which always got on his nerves.
And the worst part about it is that the third elder, who’d reshaped the door to fit the other’s design, could’ve easily returned it to the original size but they left it larger just to mock him every time he went through it!

Meng Yixuan looked around the area for the tallest tree. In the novel, there was a puzzle starting at said tree that opened into a secret grotto.
The protagonist had only stumbled into it by chance about half way through this but he already knew exactly what to do once he got to the tree so he’d save himself the trouble of encountering the human he planned to avoid until he could no longer do so!
He spotted it quickly and informed the others of his plan to go there, they decided to follow along too.
Well, Huli Bao decided to.
Lang Xing would definitely follow him, and mama Hei would follow Lang Xing, so Huli Bao was the only one making the conscious decision to come along.
Meng Yixuan was the default leader of their little pack but he let Lang Hei take the reins through the forest since she’d lived there for however long and most definitely knew her own territory much better than he did.
His decision proved beneficial when she’d gotten them there within the hour, avoiding all the traps and potential pitfalls that the novel had mentioned people stumbling into.
When they arrived, Meng Yixuan first used his aura sensor to make sure noone was nearby before he paced about the tallest tree and clicked on all the pressure mechanisms, activating the different parts and pieces in the right order according to the novel.
His near-photographic memory came into good use yet again as a hole in the ground appeared, opening to reveal a stairway going downwards.
They were only one step in before Lang Hei transformed into a smaller version of her wolf form and sped down the stairs into the darkness below.
Meng Yixuan and Huli Bao shared a glance and ran after her, with Meng Yixuan making sure that Lang Xing wouldn’t fall off.
In the large treasure room that Meng Yixuan had expected to find, a large male on the floor, bleeding profusely onto the ground, probably dead, and Lang Hei stood above him with blood around her muzzle, growling threateningly at the male on the floor.
A soft, cracking voice echoed in the treasure-filled but also empty room, “easy girl. It’s okay, he won’t hurt you.”
Lang Hei replied to her with a nod to her own bleeding self and whimpered, approaching slowly and nuzzling the hand that clutched the wound on her stomach.
“Are you worried for me?” A nod was given in reply, “hey, I’m okay. I heal quickly! Just a good sleep and I’ll be fine!”
But her claim was barely believable when one took her heavy and short breathing into account.
With that in mind, the same Lang Hei who’d watched in exasperation as her daughter formed a bond just the day before, now lapped up at the female’s blood, forming her own.
Meng Yixuan and Huli Bao finally arrived just as a light glow came from the two.
“Eula!” He called out just as she fell unconscious, shifting into a dark-feathered raven.
Lang Hei was only partially startled before she shifted back into a human, effectively reversing their roles.
She picked up the small bird and drew her to her chest to keep her warm.
Then, she finally saw the very worried Meng Yixuan’s face and felt that she owed him at least half an explanation.
“We pure-blooded wolves are all born with a fated mate, of sorts. This raven, Eula you called her? Is mine. In this eternity, the two of us were destined to find each other. The scum there attempted to harm my mate so I did away with him.”
The venom truly did reach through from her words, and Meng Yixuan nodded, understanding the concept that resembled soulmates in his original world.
“If Hei Jie would just give me a moment to retrieve something from a little further in the grotto, then we’ll be able to return.”
Without waiting for a reply, he pushed one of the bricks along the wall and sped into the door that had slid open after the blood spill.
Before he could advance further, Lang Xing jumped onto Huli Bao’s head instead and he continued onwards.
Behind the door was another set of doors and, thanks to his advanced sight, he could tell that behind each door was a different extremely rare treasure in this realm.
The first was a pure yin cultivator’s fire for alchemy and crafting, one that he knew the make sect master would truly appreciate as a pure yang craftsman-sword dual cultivator himself.
The second was the rare ascension pearl that the protagonist had taken, which directly pushed him to the fifth layer of the golden core stage! The other most important attribute of the pearl was its qi condensing ability that Fang Lei had never truly understood.
Finally, there were a dozen healing pills that could even go as far as reviving someone from the dead, if the dose is just right. Three for resurrection, two for resuscitation, one for regular healing.
And right now, Eula really needed the pills. Meng Yixuan put aside his selfish wish to help Huli Bao become stronger sooner and instead walked to take the pills.
The door opened and he was able to take them from the altar.
As he turned to leave, the door of the cultivator’s fire also opened and he was able to take it also, placing them both into his earring.
Before leaving this final puzzle, he bowed in gratitude to the shrine-like place and took his leave.
Then, he led them all out from the back door and started their journey to leave.
“How did you know that the door was there?” Lang Hei wondered out loud, even she didn’t realise it.
“On the wall, it read that ‘Only the blood of the wicked could open the gates.’” He explained, deterring in order to avoid having to explain his past when they were in such a rush to return home.
“Oh? I did see that writing. But how could you read the ancient script? It’s been lost since before the times of even my earliest ancestors!” Lang Hei nodded, recalling the words hidden behind the man’s body when she’d first encountered him.
“Ahh, I’ll answer that question after we heal Eula. We need her in a stable place so her body can cultivate back to its optimum.”
Lang Hei nodded and picked up the pace a bit, not worrying that her pup couldn’t catch up when she was sitting on the fox’s large back.
In fact, she took Huli Bao’s example and shifted into her own wolf form, which enabled her to travel much faster.
She then sprinted to the house, knowing that the other two could definitely keep up.
When Huli Bao noticed this, he also realised that this gave him the perfect chance to flirt with the other, and he took it with all hands standing, “Me– Yi– Xua–”
Okay maybe this’d be a lot easier if he knew what to call the other.
“Eh~ Baobao can call me Xuanxuan, then we have matching nicknames!” Meng Yixuan displayed a :3 face as he spoke in a gently teasing manner.
“Xuanxuan. You can ride me.”
Okay, not a good idea! Meng Yixuan’s face grew very warm as he almost tripped over nothingness. He was very obviously flustered at the order, and he only grew more embarrassed when Lang Xing also called to him, “Yeah, come ride this Bao Ge!”
Though only he could hear it thanks to their bond.
After trying to deny it, he finally gave in and got onto Huli Bao’s soft and furry back, enjoying the feeling against his fingers as he grabbed some of it to make sure he didn’t fall.
The wind combed through his hair and the trees flashed past as Huli Bao ran towards their pavilion.
It almost felt like the butterflies people said they felt on rollercoasters! Not that he’d know, he’d never been on one.
But the beam of pure ecstasy on his face would not be erased easily. Regardless of whether it’s the same or not, he thought, this was way better!
