PsychicCh113 - The Source of the Curse

He Jinglian’s crisis had been resolved, but Fan Jialuo was still slowly spinning the soul bell and chanting quietly. He placed his hands over the girl’s neck, which was covered in strangulation marks, and began to recite the Medicine Buddha’s True Words Mantra. This mantra was originally used to pray for good health, but from his mouth came the power of healing. The already calm people felt increasingly refreshed, and even Song Rui’s heart, which constantly felt like a volcano was erupting, also gained a short period of peace.

Miraculously, the blue and purple strangulation marks around He Jinglian’s neck gradually faded, before disappearing completely. The young man’s cool palm completely extinguished the  burning feeling in her throat, but her throat seemed to be injured so she was unable to make any sounds. She could only tightly hold onto the hem of Fan Jialuo’s clothes and point at the vermillion-painted palace doors, shaking her head repeatedly. dUcYSm

Don’t go in! You can’t go in! Even the thick cotton eye mask couldn’t absorb all the tears streaming down her face, and it lay saturated with water on her cheeks.

Fan Jialuo stopped ringing the bell and chanting mantras. He slowly removed the young girl’s blindfold, shielding her eyes with one hand in order to prevent the harsh light from hurting her irises. His voice was soothing as he assured, “Don’t be afraid, I will be fine. You go down to rest first. Everything will be fine after you wake up.”

The energy he emitted was like a heater, completely warming up He Jinglian’s body and soul. She no longer trembled or cried, but nodded her head sharply and obediently. She realized that she was dragging Mr. Fan down, which was the last thing she wanted to do. She let go of the young man’s clothes and moved with difficulty, trying to stand up. At this time, Ah Huo and Mother He, who had been waiting for a long time, both stretched out their arms at the same time.

He Jinglian looked at the two’s arms, and hesitated for a few seconds before placing her palm in Ah Huo’s hand. She remembered that when she fell into the abyss of pain, this person’s voice kept echoing in her ears. Although it couldn’t lead her out of her desperate situation, it brought her a lot of much needed courage. Where was her mother’s voice… o8EM0A

He Jinglian was stunned for a moment. However, she truly had no recollection of it. Did her mother really worry about her? If she did, then why couldn’t she hear her call?

Mother He, who was alienated from her daughter, glared at Ah Huo, but didn’t dare to glare at Fan Jialuo, who had a greater influence over her daughter. After experiencing that terrible encounter just now, how could she not guess what kind of existence this person was. Due to her daughter’s special constitution, she knew far more about people like psychics than ordinary people, so she knew how powerful a strong psychic could be.

Looking back, wasn’t her previous tirade a ridiculous joke? Did a man who could use a bell to dispel an unsolvable curse that had survived for a thousand years really need to seduce her daughter? Was it necessary to resort to such low-level means in order to reduce his competition? To put it mildly, she was afraid that even if all the psychics present were combined into one, they would not be his opponent.

Not only did Mother He’s face turn red with shame, even the “Harry Potter Quartet” were covering their heads, feeling quite embarrassed. Their imagined reversal did not happen, and in the end their lives had to be saved by him. Did a god-like man such as Fan Jialuo need to pay the program crew to cooperate with him in acting? Could the previous tests be more dangerous or mysterious than today?

We’re still too young and inexperienced! The four of them blushed and thought to themselves in unison.

However, even the knowledgeable Old Liang and the others were stunned by this turn of events.

Old Lu had always been the calmest. His daughter’s brainwashing had given him a kind of mysterious confidence in Fan Jialuo, and the facts had proved that it was not unfounded. “Mr. Fan, have our curses been lifted?” he asked with trepidation. Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the young man. This was a matter of life and death!

“It’s all lifted.” Even blindfolded, Fan Jialuo was able to bypass everyone and walk unimpeded to Yuan Zhongzhou’s side, and handed the soul bell over. “Here you go.” ZEtHBz

“Thank you.” Yuan Zhongzhou was startled by the way the soul bell was now tainted with a strong Buddhist intent, but he soon sincerely bowed in thanks. After being used only once by the young man, his soul weapon had surprisingly become stronger, more spiritual, and more powerful than the culmination of ten years of rigorous cultivation. He actually didn’t help the young man, but he received such a gift, he was really a bit ashamed…

The old Yuan Zhongzhou held the soul bell uneasily, and in a daze, he almost thought that the person standing in front of him was a senior with profound skills, not a young man in his early twenties. However, his seventh sense told him clearly that this was indeed a young soul, and it wasn’t an exaggeration at all to call him a youngster.

The staff also responded in agreement, as if they completely forgot about their terrible experience from before. Mr. Fan was the program’s pillar. With him, they weren’t afraid of anything! FzWENe

Seeing them all echo the same response, Song Rui couldn’t help but shake his head and chuckle. Fan Jialuo’s influence was really terrifying. As long as he showed himself, he would quickly become the center of attention.

Old Liang quickly stepped forward to stop this group of hot-blooded people. “Wait, wait, let me ask Teacher Fan first, can this place still be entered? We won’t be cursed again, right?” In the past, he usually called young men in their early twenties hairy children, but now, he called the other Teacher without a word of complaint, and didn’t even blush.

“Yes, Teacher Fan, please take a good look, or else we won’t be able to carry out our work.” Old Lao was also concerned about this. A group of old men surrounded Fan Jialuo, asking all sorts of questions with earnest expressions. It formed a strong contrast to their previous expressions of regret, doubt, and suspicion.

“There will be no problem if you enter with me.” Fan Jialuo raised his head to “look” at the palace. Ua tVd

Old Liang immediately understood—they could enter with this person’s protection, but after he left, the palace must continue to stay sealed. The curse still existed. It was not completely undone, and only temporarily cut off by the young man.

The scholars looked at each other, unsure of what to do. The task had been assigned by their superiors, and the funds were already in place. They had spent part of the funds, but they couldn’t even enter the most important palace. How should they explain this? Would the higher-ups believe that there was a curse inside?

“Continue to shoot.” Fan Jialuo stretched out his arm and poked at the high up plaque, saying slowly, “The son of heaven is the parent of the people, and thinks he is the king of the world.”

“Did Mr. Fan make a mistake? The plaque only has four words written on it, right?” Song Wennuan whispered in her cousin’s ear with a rather worried expression. xs6Tdb

Song Rui looked at her like she was a fool. “This is the commentary on the four characters Huang Jian You Ji in the chapter ‘Shang Shu–Zhou Shu–Hong Fan.’ You go back and read more, so that you don’t lose face on TV.”

Song Wennuan blushed, and couldn’t help feeling deeply regretful. I should have pinched the microphone when asking the question just now, so the audio wouldn’t have recorded my idiotic question.

Old Liang, Old Lu, and the others all stared at Fan Jialuo with burning gazes and nodded vigorously, obviously understanding what the other party was talking about. He elaborated on the content of the plaque in an indirect manner, which showed that he already knew where he was, with no need to elaborate. Where else could the plaque with Huang Jian You Ji be besides Jinluan Hall?

All the participants gathered around, slowly but steadily following Fan Jialuo. They were eager to get a glimpse of a top psychic. S8FKpV

Fan Jialuo didn’t let them down. He crossed the tall threshold without anyone’s help, whispering as he walked, “The remaining dragon qi is all over the place. During its long river of history, it screamed in the pain of the rolling waves, until it finally was exhausted. This used to be a place of song and dance to promote peace, and people came from all four directions to congratulate it. However, it also once caused blood to flow into rivers, and corpses to cover the ground. It has stood for a thousand years, and has been sealed for a thousand years.”

Old Liang walked up to Song Wennuan and Song Rui, and said in an almost inaudible voice, “Teacher Fan is very powerful, he almost said the word ‘Ziwei Palace’!”

Song Wennuan raised her chin and said proudly, “He definitely knows where this is, he just won’t say it.”

Song Rui walked a few steps quickly, until he was shoulder to shoulder with Fan Jialuo. He turned to face him, smiling and gazing in his direction. Fan Jialuo seemed to sense something and turned his head, the corners of his scarlet lips hooking up. x7wpmj

Song Rui pressed his fist to his lips, trying to suppress the wonderful emotions surging inside his heart.

He Jinglian originally hid behind Ah Huo with a timid expression and movements, but at this time, she couldn’t help but poke her head out, thinking silently in her heart: Today is so strange! Dr. Song constantly has a bird singing in his heart, and it’s weirdly nice.

Fan Jialuo walked straight to the royal throne, and said slowly, “I hear the call of one’s desire for power, and it is urging me to step on it. This position symbolizes supremacy, and also symbolizes the fate of heaven, but in fact, it is just a stool. Mankind’s selfishness and greed have endowed it with a different meaning. Some people fight and bleed for it, while some people cast a curse on it.”

Old Liang and the others were completely amazed, as the young man’s few words almost told everyone bluntly—I know there is a dragon throne in front of me. s1ENtC

The scholars from the Cultural Relics Conservation Bureau had all signed confidentiality agreements. Even though they were all frightened just now, none of them had mentioned the words ‘Ziwei Palace,’ so Fan Jialuo shouldn’t know anything, but it turned out that he knew everything.

He stepped onto the throne one step at a time.

Song Wennuan and the others almost shouted “No” in unison, but stopped in time. They realized that without complete certainty, Mr. Fan would not take any risks.

The “Harry Potter Quartet,” who had been disfigured by the throne, felt their hearts clench, but they had to admit that Dr. Song’s description was correct: some people were so blind that they couldn’t see the abyss at their fingertips, while others could cross it by stretching their legs. For psychics, the gap between strength couldn’t be measured using a ruler. A difference in strength was equivalent to reaching a different level, not to mention that Fan Jialuo was stronger than them by an especially large gap? The people who were talking nonsense on the internet should really come and see the scene live. After witnessing all this with their own eyes, they would know how simple their lives are. KPQnu7

Song Rui also followed Fan Jialuo to the throne. Both of them were not interested in power, so they didn’t even think about experiencing the comfort of the dragon throne. They paced back and forth on the high platform, and then stood shoulder to shoulder in the middle of the platform.

The feeling of being watched suddenly became very strong, and the sharp pain of needles piercing Song Rui’s brain caused his gaze to flicker. However, in the eyes of the others, he appeared calm and unharmed, and no one knew what he was enduring. A cool hand suddenly held his hand, taking away the waves of stinging pain. He looked at the young man beside him and finally couldn’t restrain a quiet chuckle. Today’s test was really as interesting as he had expected.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Fan Jialuo stretched out his other hand, probing into the void, and slowly spat out the words, “With blood as a guide and a soul as a sacrifice, all those I see will be devoured by me.” This incantation clearly came out of his mouth, but it seemed to be mixed with a hoarse, harsh, and resentful female voice. It swept through the empty hall, piercing everyone’s eardrums.

Old Liang and Old Lu backed away one after another, almost tripping over each other’s hands and feet until they fell into a ball. Once again, they were greatly frightened. laZy1U

The people in the program team, including the well-informed psychics, were also pale and horrified. The cameraman responsible for following Fan Jialuo was the most miserable. He didn’t dare to go up to the royal throne, so he could only hold the camera up high and shoot from under the platform. At this moment, his grip softened, and he almost smashed the machine onto his face.

Fan Jialuo unfastened his blindfold and pointed to a huge beam facing the throne, saying, “The source of the curse is there. Is there a ladder? Give me a ladder.”

“The source of the curse is still there?” Zhu Xiya was taken aback. She specialized in the study of curses, yet even she didn’t realize this.

Old Liang and Old Lu said quickly, “Yes, yes, yes, there’s a ladder in our construction shed. We’ll get it for you now.” uMCmBG

Naturally, the program team wouldn’t let the two old men go and fetch the heavy ladder, so they immediately sent two field workers to the construction shed. Within a few minutes, a more than ten meters tall ladder stood in the hall. Fan Jialuo wanted to climb up by himself, but Song Rui gently pulled his arm. He rolled the cuffs of his sleeves up a little higher and said in a warm voice, “That thing has limited influence on me. I’ll go up, you wait for me.” After speaking, he quickly climbed up, his movements surprisingly very nimble.

Everyone looked up at him, their gazes more focused and their breathing quickening. Their thoughts were chaotic: That’s the source of the curse ah, what form will it be? A puppet? Bones? A dagger? What will happen after collecting it? Will Dr. Song be corroded into a pool of blood?

If Song Rui could read minds, he might have been amused by those messy thoughts. He was very good at finding mechanisms, and it only took him a few minutes to retrieve a chunk of metal in the shape of a box from a hollowed-out hidden compartment of the beam. The side of the box facing the throne was inlaid with two black pearls, appearing very gorgeous. After more than a thousand years, it had not rusted, but instead glinted with a strange cold light.

The moment Song Rui picked up the box, he felt as if his head was scraped by a steel knife, but this pain was nothing to him. He only frowned slightly, then looked down at the young man’s gaze of worry and concern. With a slight smile, he descended the ladder. 5 dkoT

Fan Jialuo was just about to take the metal box when Old Liang quickly took a few steps and snatched it away. This was something from Ziwei Palace, and in a sense, it also belonged to the Cultural Relics Conservation Bureau. But the moment he touched it, Old Liang collapsed to the ground with a scream, followed by him clutching his head and crying out in pain.

The crowd scattered in fright, backing up again and again. Fan Jialuo caught the falling box quickly with one hand, while gently holding Song Rui’s hand with his other, driving away the pain that could drive people crazy. Of course, the so-called “driven crazy” was only for ordinary people, and its impact on Song Rui was indeed very limited. A curse itself couldn’t kill people, and what actually drove people to death was the painful and terrifying hallucinations. If someone was unafraid of pain and wasn’t confused by hallucinations, then he would be immune to almost any curse.

Fighting against such a horrible curse with a mortal body, Dr. Song’s uniqueness once again impressed Fan Jialuo.

Song Rui looked down at the young man’s hand firmly holding his wrist, and the corners of his mouth hooked up secretly. The climb was not in vain. yM0g6t

Only after appeasing Song Rui did Fan Jialuo touch Old Liang’s brows, rescuing him from the pain of his soul being torn apart.

“Look carefully, this is not something you can touch.” Fan Jialuo slowly turned the box so that the inlaid side was facing Old Liang, causing the other party to collapse with a cry of shock. It turned out that the black pearls inlaid in the side of the box were not pearls at all, but two eyeballs wrapped in a round glass bottle!

They had been stored in the temple for an unknown number of years, but they still shone brightly, as if they had just been dug out from a living body!

  1. …. I just want to point out..

Did anyone notice the fact that MC and ML are holding hands TWICE in this chapter?

And yes, as of now, I regretfully have to admit that Song Rui really is the ML. Why? Because:

Song Rui doesn’t react much to the curse and pain, contrary to everyone else, doesn’t get influenced by Xu Fengxi’s ability and generally is very resistant towards those supernatural events.
He is strong, intelligent, seems even more dangerous to others than Fanfan and a few chapters back finally got described a bit more (the shower scene from Ch. 100)
He is very, VERY interested in Fanfan and gets jealous as soon as someone else touches him (even my little bird He Jinglian)
His contacts and friends are all very influential people
Compared to the other two (Bai Mu and Zhao Wenyan), he has far… FAR more screentime and interactions with Fanfan. (Zhuang Zhen doesn’t count as a ML-candidate, since he has almost no screentime and interactions and moreover doesn’t like Fanfan at all)

There are some more points, but hey…

All in all, as much as I still don’t like him, at this moment for me he has been declared the official ML of this story. (Even if I’m currently biting my handkerchief because ML isn’t my baby-boy Bai Mu)
