[nexus laboratory, one week later] 7XOpvt

โ€œThe preliminary analysis is as followsโ€ฆโ€

Aria carries with her a notepad, all of its pages filled with words. She flips to a middle section, traces her manicured nails over the messy script and squints a bit before continuing.

Read more BL at chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

โ€œAfter conducting three experimental trials, specimen 23 remains unresponsive to external stimuli, but seems to display some signs of recognition. Its aggression level is measured to beโ€ฆโ€ She squints again, seems to have trouble reading the scrawly handwriting, and coughs a little. โ€œ40 on a 62-point scale. Specimen 23 is stable unless in presence of a trigger mechanic โ€“ namely, other anomalies or humans. However, itโ€™s gotten relatively mild around Ming Tang. Perhaps it senses no threat from him.โ€

She walks down the long-spanning laboratory with Shi Luo by her side. The doctor is listening attentively while simultaneously studying the clear tanks in front. There are dozens of them in just this one room. Inside are various, unknown creatures โ€“ one tank per creature, the temperature artificially regulated. G4zfbL

Aria tries to report as best as she can. โ€œWeโ€™ve sedated specimen 24. Not only is it unresponsive to external stimuli, but its aggression level fluctuates to the high 50s. We had to cover the tank with another layer of borosilicate.โ€

They stop in front of a large, brown bear. It takes the form of a half-human โ€“ partially human face but with rounder protruding ears, black hair but with brown fur covering its limbs. It isnโ€™t the most exquisite sight, but the anomaly is leagues less grotesque than the others theyโ€™ve seen. One such example is the strange thing the next tank over โ€“ a human-wasp with a stinger growing out the vestigial tail.

Shi Luo taps on the circulation tank, feeling up the sturdiness of it. โ€œYouโ€™ve recalibrated the piston?โ€

โ€œYes, yes.โ€ She nods fervently. โ€œHave I done it right?โ€

Z4bUQH

โ€œIt is properly done,โ€ Shi Luo tells her with a smile. He taps the glass more firmly, observing the hybrid bear as it growls at him. โ€œBut some parts of your analysis are lacking. Specimen 24 โ€“ unresponsive to external stimuli yet able to sense minor disturbances in its tank. Which is it?โ€

Aria coughs again and flips through the notepad, somewhat nervously glancing at the words. โ€œWellโ€ฆ itโ€™s what he hasโ€”I have written here. I may need to do another experimentโ€ฆ but doctor, Iโ€™m running on two hours of sleep and ten shots of caffeineโ€ฆ T-There are bound to be some mistakesโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œThree hours of overtime work today,โ€ he says as he pats her head affectionately. He rearranges a strand of hair sticking out. His tone and action do not match his stabbing words. โ€œReferring to an internโ€™s analysis report that is filled with gibberish, having Ming Tang substitute for your afternoon shift, lying and taking an extended two-hour restroom break. Aria, your actions are all duly recorded.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆBoss!โ€ Aria sobs out, throwing away the notepad and clinging onto Shi Luoโ€™s arm. โ€œThe truth is Iโ€™m running on six hours of sleep! The healthy, recommended amount is eight a night! Weโ€™ve been researching nonstop for the past weekโ€ฆ!โ€ DBAbjw

โ€œIt will be a routine for the next few months,โ€ Shi Luo states, pushing up the rims of his glasses. โ€œFifty thousand casualties, thirty thousand infected samples, twenty thousand recovered embryos โ€“ and nearly all of them tested radioactively. With half our biopsy specialists out of commission or yet recovered, we would have to overcompensate.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI know,โ€ Aria says dejectedly. โ€œBut I sometimes thinkโ€ฆ our efforts are futile. The city will never be recovered, Doctor. Civil unrest, distrust, fear โ€“ amidst all this, the city is placing all hopes on us and research is never about certainty.โ€

They pass through another section of the lab. The lighting in here is brighter. In the center are two large dual monitors. The blue screens shine down on a young teenager sleeping in front. His short black hair is pooled onto an opened textbook. The desk heโ€™s passed out on is stacked with papers, books, messily-scrawled notepads.

Shi Luo takes off his coat and covers the teenโ€™s back. H9y 0z

โ€œWe do not care for certainty,โ€ the doctor responds. โ€œAs long as there is advancement, there is hope.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIs there hope, Dr. Shi?โ€ Aria sighs and rubs her tired eyes. โ€œIโ€™ll be honestโ€ฆ In this lifetime, I do not know if we could ever overcome. Fifty thousand casualties and for a smidgeon of progress โ€“ is it worth it? Research has gone further than it ever did, of course, but what if we need to sacrifice tens of thousands more? We run on a time constraint, Doctor, and itโ€™s a miracle weโ€™ll still be alive decades later.โ€

โ€œIt took decades of cosmic history for the first humans to reach the moon, nearly a century more for humans to concretely plan to explore Mars. The costs, the sacrifices โ€“ astronomical. And you believe we may overcome interstellar fields in but a few generations?โ€ Shi Luo chuckles as he takes a remote from the desk. He presses a few buttons and dims the room. โ€œIt is alright, Aria, to continue as you are.โ€

โ€œBossโ€ฆ!โ€ Aria sobs out. โ€œI love you!โ€ o2ZbA

Shi Luo ignores her completely. โ€œNever mind the overtime โ€“ the lab is closing early today. I have a few commitments. You may leave Ming Tang in here. Lock the doors on your way out.โ€

โ€œY-Yes!โ€ Aria sheds a tear. โ€œIโ€™ll be energized for tomorrow, Shi Luoโ€”I mean, Dr. Shi!โ€

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Shi Luo gives her a small wave in return as he exits the middle section. Before he leaves the lab, he pulls open a cabinet and puts an aluminum packet inside his pocket.

He takes an elevator down twenty floors, passes the reception area, says a few words of courtesy to the workers. When he leaves the building, his expression becomes stoic. He takes off his glasses, tucks it into his white coat, and heads forward. MijeBY

In the aftermath, a week after the outbreak, the inner-city streets are still in quarantine. Not a single civilian is allowed in nor out, with the exception of patrol police, armed guards and select employees. Every facility is heavily inspected, and every person screened. Shi Luo walks toward a slate-gray building, a facility the same color as all the others around it, with no distinction whatsoever if not for the unit number by the entranceway.

โ€œThe accommodations are quite good,โ€ the doctor comments. โ€œThe border residents would pay thousands a month to live here.โ€

Behind the gated door, sitting peacefully on a chair is Xie Liwei. Dressed in a plain black shirt and a pair of trousers, the man still exerts an aura of power. He places the book heโ€™s reading down on the desk and turns around.

โ€œIt is only that the city does not have proper detainment centers.โ€ GK51q2

โ€œThere are no arrests,โ€ Shi Luo says as he leans against the adjacent wall. โ€œNormal citizens would be thrown out into the slumsโ€ฆ but as for you, I suppose you get special treatment regardless. Will you be executed?โ€

โ€œWhy have you come?โ€

โ€œTo pay respects to my past caretaker.โ€ Shi Luo stares at the white ceiling. โ€œBecause I am certain you will be leaving confinement soon.โ€

โ€œWhere do you suppose I will go?โ€ TFZCct

โ€œWho knows,โ€ Shi Luo responds. โ€œWherever you escape to is not my business. Iโ€™ve already two fugitives to take care of.โ€

There is silence for a while before Xie Liwei speaks, โ€œWhere has he gone?โ€

โ€œOut of your reach.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€ 90xB4N

Silence again. The exchange is extremely stale โ€“ but again, communicating with the ex-general is akin to speaking to a steel wall. Sound traverses through, but the older man replies in single sentences and short words. Ten seconds with him is followed by a minute of tension.

โ€œShi Luo.โ€ Xie Liwei makes no effort to move from his spot. โ€œTake care of him.โ€

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

The doctor lets out a laugh โ€“ a low chuckle that turns increasingly more mirthful.

โ€œAmazing,โ€ Shi Luo says after some seconds more. โ€œYou shackle him to me, Xie Liwei.โ€ WtLPzm

[current location: unchartered]

Water trickles down his hair, slides down his sharp jawline, rolls to collarbones and down. The droplets catch the scabs on his abnormally pale body. With the bandages taken off, dozens of scars come into view, fading short by his hip line. Soap suds slip from firm muscles down to a secretive place.

The steam fogs the full-body mirror to the side. Noah has his eyes closed in the shower. VDrxAm

Five minutes later and heโ€™s still standing underneath the showerhead, unknowingly drifting off into space. His head wobbles and rests onto the wall. The hot water is comforting to his skin, and he allows himself to doze for some more seconds. The lights flicker overhead. Two flickers later, they turn off completely, and the room is in complete darkness.

And in the darkness, he hears a low whisper.

โ€œIโ€™m going to kill you, Noah.โ€

Noah jolts up. He whips his head sideway only to see nothing โ€“ no ghostly apparitions, no glowing blue eyes, none of that beastly thing he conjures in his mind. zxqbd2

โ€œโ€ฆHow persistent,โ€ he breathes out, calming his palpitating heart. โ€œI should have run away from you long ago.โ€

Shampoo is being washed down to his eyelids and he lets out soft sigh, bringing his hands to scrub at them. Perhaps his eardrum is indeed so damaged heโ€™s started to hear illusory voices.

โ€œYou should not have been born, Noah.โ€

โ€œ…โ€ Noah turns off the showerhead. โ€œThe memories are wrongโ€ฆ Youโ€™ve never called me Noah. Iโ€™ve discarded the name you gave me, so do not look for me anymore.โ€ KYrM4i

โ€œXie Xing.โ€ Itโ€™s his fatherโ€™s voice this time. Cold, commandeering, the worst kind. โ€œYou will not see me again.โ€

He replies quietly, โ€œYou do not have to appear before me.โ€

He grabs a towel overhead. He wipes over his million scars and imperfections, scrubbing down particularly hard on his ribs. It becomes silent once more, the last beads dripping from the showerhead. A minute later, his body is clothed and mildly flushed. He leans against a wall mirror, staring up at the lights that have started up again.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Xie Xing.โ€ FOGQgy

Noah freezes.

Itโ€™s his father again โ€“ how odd for his imagination to rouse sentimentality. General Xie had never told him anything of the sort. Noah chuckles lowly and rubs at his eyes.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ve gone insane,โ€ he whispers.

An uncanny, out-of-character delusion in the form of a brooding Xie Liwei โ€“ yet, Noah remains frozen in place for some time, pondering it over and over again. With a slight shake of his head, he unlocks the restroom door and steps out. zwMfsD

The place is small and dingy โ€“ barren and outdated too, missing the most basic of necessities. Quite dusty as well, with corners that havenโ€™t been cleaned in an unfortunate number of months. It really is a small and dingy place hardly big enough for even one person to live in.

There are several packs of cigarettes on the living room table, several cans of tuna, several more opened cans of grub left hastily. Then there are random piles of clothes on the sofa and while some are admittedly neatly folded, several other pieces are thrown onto the adjacent chair as though it were a laundry basket. The more recent additions on top, the sweat-stained shirts, smell heavily of musk.

The place has as much personality as its owner.

In the single, unlit bedroom, Yang Rong is throwing on a new shirt. He had just gone out somewhere โ€“ or he had run a marathon or two, judging from the sweat on his back. Underneath the dark fabric of his shirt are several thin bandages, changed for likely the twentieth time. 5P7uRI

Noah goes to him and presses up on his side.

Yang Rong, with his shirt halfway buttoned up his torso, turns at an angle.

โ€œHmm? Whatโ€™s wrong, kitten?โ€ he asks. Thereโ€™s slight worry in his tone. โ€œTired? Then you should go back to sleep. Rest up for a week or two moreโ€ฆ or even a month if you need. Rong-ge will take care of you well.โ€

Noah wraps his arms around him โ€“ unfortunate that he isnโ€™t able to encircle Yang Rongโ€™s frame entirely. โ€œYang Rongโ€ฆโ€ 3fDhu9

โ€œโ€ฆHm?โ€ Yang Rong is surprised by the clinginess. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œGetting your attention.โ€

Yang Rong pauses a little before chuckling lowly. He turns around and wraps the younger man into an embrace. โ€œWell, kitten, if you want my attentionโ€ฆโ€ his voice drops to a teasing murmur, โ€œall you have to do is call my name cutely and give me a kiโ€””

Noah pulls him in for a kiss. 1Do3Au

One hand curls on Yang Rongโ€™s dark shirt while the other rests on the base of his neck. Noahโ€™s lips are warmed and moistened, soft to the touch. He presses onto Yang Rong slowly, testingly, yet hinting of impatience. The colonel โ€“ ex-colonel, though the label is long engrained into his mind โ€“ doesnโ€™t hesitate to reciprocate, capturing him deeply in kind. Yang Rong lets out an appreciative hum and settles a hand on his jaw, coaxing him to deepen the kiss.

Noah lets out a soft whine when Yang Rong slides in a tongue โ€“ and the man is so expectedly yet roguishly skilled that it has Noah a little weak to his advances. Still, the stubborn part of him tries to vie for dominance, and the more displeased part of him pushes Yang Rong down onto the bed. Yang Rong, of course, only complies out of regard, smirking as Noah licks the jut of his lower lip.

โ€œTell me the truth, little kitten,โ€ Yang Rong laughs quietly against his mouth. โ€œHow much do you like kissing me?โ€

Noah bites him in return โ€“ not deep enough to draw blood, but firm enough to make a point. Yang Rong, merciful enough, slides a hand on the dampened locks of his hair, appeasing him with circular rubs โ€“ โ€œyes, yes,โ€ the man replies as he places a soft kiss on his cheek, โ€œRong-ge will stop talking nonsense.โ€ V4CtX6

In the room lit up with only one golden lamp, the two settle in silence on the bed. Yang Rong is sprawled onto his back and Noah is rested on top. Their chests are touching, and there is not even a millimeter of space between their pounding hearts โ€“ rather, when Noah pays closer attention, only his own pulse is pounding like so. He takes a quiet, deep breath before kissing Yang Rong again โ€“ even more insistently this time, licking and biting for access.

Yang Rong appeases him all the same, matching him in every pace, appeasing his every gasp and purr. Saliva glistens his mouth when they part, and Noahโ€™s cheeks are flushed a scarlet hue. Yang Rong rubs at the mole on the corner of his lips.

โ€œIs something wrong?โ€ the colonel whispers. โ€œHow are your injuries? Your ear? Tell Rong-ge if anything is wrong.โ€

โ€œNothing is wrong, Yang Rong,โ€ Noah murmurs. โ€œI only felt like kissing you.โ€ W4LYra

Green eyes trail over his form, carrying with them every bit of perceptiveness. Noah feels a little bare under his scrutiny and subconsciously, he shifts away. Yang Rong holds him still.

โ€œYou are doing it again,โ€ Yang Rong says quietly. โ€œNoah, tell me what youโ€™re feeling?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ Noah sighs softly and burrows himself into the manโ€™s hold. โ€œโ€ฆYou cater to me too much, Yang Rong. A person like meโ€ฆ I come with kilograms of baggage.โ€

โ€œBaggage?โ€ Yang Rong hoists himself to a sitting position, taking Noah upward with him, and flashes a grin as if to prove a point. โ€œRong-ge can carry all your weight on one hand, and still have reserve energy to carry one thousand more kilos.โ€ 9a2f7r

How dangerous โ€“ the calming, soothing tenor of his voice is enough to make Noah go entirely defenseless. He is rooted in place, unable to look away from Yang Rongโ€™s intensity โ€“ the intensity of his character, that is. The man exudes battle-hardened poise, danger and more; yet Noah is drawn to his tenderness all the same.

How unexpected โ€“ under that powerful faรงade is a handsome vigorousness Noah cannot hope to match. Noah is struck right in his core. And his ears are quite blazed red by now. He dips his head forward, tapping lightly against Yang Rongโ€™s chest.

โ€œโ€ฆYeah,โ€ he whispers. โ€œโ€ฆYang Rong, I think Iโ€ฆโ€

He doesnโ€™t finish his sentence, merely shaking away the thought, snuggling himself closer to the man. KEudts

โ€œYou can ask me questions too,โ€ Yang Rong tells him with a soft smile. โ€œSuch as where you are, what time it is, how long youโ€™ve been in and out of sleepโ€ฆ Little kitten, you can ask whatโ€™s happened.โ€

If Noah focuses a little more, he can make out a clock in the far-right corner. The time is past twilight, peak darkness hour. But there is lull in spending it in here, in this small dim room, in somewhere unknown and far away from where he is familiar with. He is isolated away from a burning world and Noah, in hypnosis, thinks he isnโ€™t as lonely as he had thought.

Noah says, โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter.โ€

When he kisses Yang Rong again, the other man takes the lead. Yang Rong tilts his jaw for easier access, slips a hand up the curve of his back. Noah feels every part of his calluses, his hardened bumps, his palm thatโ€™s held thousands of firearms. Yang Rong presses testingly at a patch of tender skin โ€“ the spot below a scab. He arches involuntarily at the touch, letting out soft, small gasps that the colonel swallows up greedily. WrRHXD

โ€œโ€”Yang Rong,โ€ he rasps out in between. โ€œYang Rongโ€”itโ€™sโ€””

โ€œDoes it hurt?โ€ the man whispers, his breaths skating across Noahโ€™s lips.

Only a little, a part of Noahโ€™s brain would like him to respond, but he is too lost in the feeling of Yang Rongโ€™s hands on him, too distracted by the fingers that have slid underneath the fabric of his damp shirt and onto his chest. Yang Rong rubs a finger โ€“ again, testingly โ€“ on his perk, prompting yet another whine.

Noahโ€™s eyes are scrunched up, his mouth parted for exhales. MTlmf6

โ€œIs it alright?โ€ Yang Rong murmurs, sensing his discomfort. โ€œTell me with words, Noah.โ€

As composed as the colonel sounds, heat radiates strongly from his body, interflowing with Noahโ€™s own. In this position, Noah can see his hardness jut against his trousers. The air hints alpha musk, sandalwood, the same vetiver scent that Noah has come to associate with the raven-haired colonel.

  1. Authorโค Please take your time and take care of things with calm and ease!!!!Hope everything is better soon

Waiting quietly for the next chapters

    ๐Ÿ˜

  2. How honest of You, Yue-san….

Still, the other side of things still has a big question mark hovering over…. especially how to deal with mr.Xie’s crime.

As for advancement of humanity… I’ll just let your logic takes over (lol)

    • you’re nitpicking over plot details that have already been explored! if you’re ever confused about something in the story, feel free to ask me directly. this comment, and some of the others you’ve made, has quite a negative tone (especially the ‘lol’) ๐Ÿ™‚ if you have critiques, that’s absolutely fine! but please separate criticizing the novel vs. criticizing me as the author

      • Eh? I’m sorry that my wording sounds so negative… it’s not a veiled sarcasm either. For real.

Never has it in my mind to deliberately… “making bad of other person” or their works.

Being nitpicky is just my personality-switch when I see something that “touched my world view/knowledge/value”… Frankly, I will be an annoying person (Y’know… like someone who will ask hundreds of questions to clarify that matter given some chances… You don’t know how many online sellers has been pissed off by me due to that questioning, do you?). And it actually also show my interest/curiosity of how you will explain that matter.

I mean, every author and their literary works has their own charm, good and bad side, ingenuity and flaw… everything is precious. I find the way authors unfold, develop, twist the logic around for the sake of their creation completion pretty intriguing (even more when the theme are science, mystery, and psychology). And one of them which I find intriguing is this work of yours, Yue-san. Thus, my comments sometimes contain pretty challenging words… I want you to shake my mind on your own way (yeah, this sounds pretty personal tho).

Once again, I’m sorry if my wording sounds so unpleasant.

And, thanks for the reminder, I’ll try to refrain being so “offensive” sounding

        • that’s okay! being curious and asking questions are completely fine (and appreciated, actually!) but i suggest you try to rephrase it in a clearer way. sometimes speech comes off unexpectedly harsh on the internet without a conveyance of tone !

  3. what does “You shackle him to me, Xie Liwei” means? Is it means Shi Luo will be Noah’s platonically guardian or…?

Anyway yass Im waiting for spicy scene in the upcoming chapter. Thank you sm for the update ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿงกโœจ

  4. No need to push yourself! Real life can be a b*tch sometime and that is totally understandable/relatable!

But wowโ€ฆ.10k?! I guess YR has endured too much and can finally let loose lol. RIP Noah ๐Ÿ˜ณ

    Thanks for the chapter!

  5. Fifty thousand casualties !!! Will Xie Liwei be subjected to mutation experiment as punishment ??? I sound like a sadist..

    Stay well Mr. Author..

  6. Yeaaaah smexy scenes to come ! Who would say no to 10k of smut ? Don’t be ashamed, be proud ๐Ÿคฃ

Remember to take care of yourself first and foremost ! We will be waiting patiently for the next chapters !

    Thanks for the update

  7. Please take care of yourself. I am so waiting for the NSFW chapters but not at your expense! I’m a loyal fan who has unlimited patience!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Yue, +1 to “overwhelmed by real life.” Real life is kicking me so hard in my non-existent nuts that it’s not funny anymore. Smh! But still, life goes on and we all have to take it one day at a time. Wishing you strength and patience.

Looking forward to the smexy chapters. disgustingly perverted smile

    • i wish the best for you on your end as well ๐Ÿคง unfortunately the transition to adulthood, jobs, taxes and everything is so mentally and physically taxing for me. if only i can just write BL for a living ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  9. To be honest sometimes I have no idea whatโ€™s happening when I read this book and I just let myself be curious and patient. Then as I keep reading I get all questions answered. I love this so much

  10. why are you making me feel sorry for General Xie? I wanted him to die not long ago and now I hope he escapes and I dunno, lives out there in the wild.

    thanks for the chapter <3

  11. I pray for the poor girl lmao, two hours of sleep and caffine… the painful reality of life T^T hopefully she can get a break soon (but maybe not when she words with Shi Luo) Oh… nvm I spoke too soon, six hours of sleep is pretty good I’d say.

…………………………….I really can’t hate Xie Liwei. He is just, for lack of better words, complicated. Though I suppose they all are in their own unique ways, he is especially so. A sort of complicated that is incredibly difficlt to udnerstand.

But my poor, darling Noah. No matter how I feel for Xie Liwei, the past cannot be undone and I do despise what Xie Liwei did to Noah, even if I cannot hate the person hismelf. Both Noah and Yang Rong are just so lovely togtehter, it’s so peaceful and healing despite everything they have gone through. I’m glad YR can see when Noah is feeling down, and hiding what he is feeling

Also Yue, do absolutely take your time when writing (this is for the future) and prioritize yourself, and your own irl obligations. I will wait however long it takes, and happily swallow up whatever you give
