Memories of the PalaceCh3 - Royal Grandmother Likes Me the Most

After walking half naked to the Phoenix Palace, Li Changyu was too infuriated to sleep. He tossed and turned all night, and after making a mess of the bed, all he could do was lay down and wait for the sun to rise. Once the first light came, he got up and prepared to get dressed. He was stopped by the sound of knocking and he tensed.

“Your Highness?” A feminine voice called out. “Are you awake yet?” PkxO R

Li Changyu sighed, remembering that now he had servants. Though he dreaded the idea, it wasn’t a foreign concept to him. He just found things faster and easier if he did it himself.

“Come in, come in.”

Three beta servants, two girls and one boy, entered. They all cupped their hands and bowed to him.

“Greetings Your Highness,” the middle one, a girl that couldn’t be more than fifteen, said. “We have prepared a selection of robes for you in advance–” se4 cw

“No thanks,” he said and carried on with his business and opened his unpacked trunk. The servants remained in their bowed positions, so he waved at them. “At ease. Go do something else.”

“Y-Your Highness…” The boy on the left stammered, and it appeared to be a habit. “T-t-this humble subject would li-li-like to inform Your Hi-highness that–”

“You have to bring tea to the Empress Dowager!” The rightmost servant girl cut the stuttering boy off and glared at him. “Your Highness, it is important to–”

“I am aware of this,” Li Changyu interrupted her now. Lifting his midnight blue martial robes out from the trunk, he turned to face the three. “Which is why I am awake early and getting ready myself. As for serving me…” He looked to the one on the left and said, “You stay.” Then, to the girl on the right, “You go.”

Li Changyu had little patience for people who didn’t have any, and while it may have taken longer than necessary for the boy to respond, he was the politest. Li Changyu waited and watched her expectantly until she finally got the hint that he was serious and she left with a frown and a low bow. He turned around and gestured to his things for the remaining two.

“Please find my black boots and the good belt,” he ordered. “You’ll know what the good belt looks like, trust me.”

The matching confused expressions on their faces were priceless. Tentatively, they went about their task and rummaged through his things for him. Li Changyu went to the screen where various pretty robes were hung. They were all vibrant in shades of pink, purple, and reds and elaborately detailed embroidery. He scoffed and tossed them to the floor before stepping behind the screen to change.

He was used to quickly dressing himself – one had to when in the field. This set of robes were his finest and he mostly used them for diplomatic events that his Father was invited to. His shirt had a high collar and was black like his pants. His long outer shirt fell to about his knees and was dark blue with gold tiger brocade along one panel. When he was finishished, he stepped out and was met with looks of awe on the children’s faces. The girl had his wide black leather belt, which was in fact the good one. He took it from her and cinched it around his waist. TsRbYU

“Y-Your Highness…” The boy’s voice trailed off as he blinked up at him and held out his boots. He took them and gave a small smile to the two, and each of them blushed. Chuckling, he pulled the chair out from the vanity and sat there to tug his boots on. The girl rushed to his side.

“Your Highness, please allow this humble servant to fix your hair for you!”

He glanced over at her and finally asked, “First, what is your name?”

“Answering Your Highness, my name is Meimei,” she nodded towards the boy, “This is my Brother Bowen.” 9n2F4r

“It is a pleasure to meet you both. While you are serving me, please just call me Changyu.” He turned to face the bronze mirror, but Meimei tensed up.

“Oh, Your Highness, this subject wouldn’t dare!”

“In this part of the palace, you may. I know I’ll get sick and tired of Your Highness this and Your Highness that very quickly,” he sighed and she lifted up an expensive looking comb that must have been one of the wedding gifts he received. “I would like to be comfortable in my own home, please.”

Both of the servants still looked skeptical, but Bowen answered, “Y-Y-Yes, Changyu…Is there any-anything this servant can d-do for you?” h62Tk0

“Actually, there is. Can you read and write well?” He asked, and Bowen nodded his head eagerly. “Go find the ink and paper and put this down for me: the rain meets the jade dew, a tiger trapped in a gilded cage.” After relaying the cryptic message, he sat still for Meimei to continue combing out his hair. “Have a messenger bring it to Shen Pei in the military camp south of the city.”

“Ri-ri-right away!” Bowen rushed off to the other end of his main room and Meimei pulled his hair through a golden crown – another wedding gift. It felt odd, being prepared by someone other than his Mother and as old as he was. The small bit of nostalgia squeezed his heart painfully, and he quickly pushed the feeling aside.

Meimei swept his bangs to one side then asked, “Does this please you?”

“Absolutely. Thank you,” he moved to get up, but was stopped by Meimei. 2 WOV1

“Wait!” Realizing she was touching him, she quickly pulled her hands away and tucked them behind her back. “Should I dab some jasmine, Changyu? It is His Majesty’s favorite.”

Favorite, huh? He arched a brow and looked at Meimei curiously, “Do the other members in the harem wear it?”

“Ummm…” Meimei relaxed her posture then tilted her head in thought. “Yes, actually. All the consorts and concubines wear it. Their rooms have jasmine incense too. It is His Majesty’s favorite, after all.”

“If that’s the case,” he smirked to himself in the mirror. “Throw out everything in here that is jasmine and replace it with sandalwood or camphor. I will not be wearing any jasmine.” XWSV9x

Li Changyu stood up and considered taking his sword, but he thought that would be pushing things a little too much. The Emperor already looked close to blowing a vessel last night when he thought Li Changyu was daring to suggest he penetrate him. Shuddering at the thought, he went back to his things. He rummaged around in the bags that held some of his other possessions and he let out a triumphant Aha! when he found what he was looking for.

He took out the delicate white jade tiger figure his Father and Mother gave to him before he left for the wedding. It was intricately carved, showing a ferocious tiger baring its teeth. It dangled on a black tassel and he lashed it to his belt.

He left his Empress’ Phoenix Palace and stood in the moon archway that led to the courtyards and he took in his surroundings. The garden, the large white marble tile paths, and the ponds full of fish were all the same. It was as if it were all untouched during the time that had passed. It has been what…eight, ten years? Sighing, he made his way towards the Tranquil Lotus Palace, where the Empress Dowager was.

Someone looks rich and the guards think a person can walk freely around the Inner Court?! The lax security was something he would have to discuss with the Emperor about later, and perhaps he could ask him to let Shen Pei whip them into shape. The guards now were a far cry from how they were when he was here last. That thought reminded him that the Emperor didn’t remember him.

“How dare he not remember me?” He grumbled out loud. He lifted up the slim sleeve of his shirt and looked down at his forearm which had a set of four jagged looking scars. They were faded from age, but it was very noticeable against his fair skin. C9Kf e

As a child, in order to learn martial arts, his Father and the Emperor allowed him to train with the Master of the Guards. The First Prince, Zhao Lanhu, was an omega and he was tasked to protect him. Most of his childhood was spent here, working from the age of six on until he was thirteen. His Father became General and they obtained a home outside the Imperial City as part of his rewards for service. Shortly thereafter, he joined the military alongside the rest of the men in his family.

His ire grew the more he looked at them and he ran a finger over one of the scars. “I got these because of him and the stupid idiot doesn’t even remember–oof!”

He hit a suspiciously soft wall and Li Changyu stepped back to look. He had walked right into Jin Xiyan and Li Changyu’s eyes went wide. He took another step back when he saw the deep set scowl on the Emperor’s face.

Having not seen him in person for so many years, it was a shock to see the transformation of a gangly youth into a tall, handsome alpha. Jin Xiyan grew to be a little over a head taller than Li Changyu, and he had the knowledge that under the Emperor’s deceptively bulky black and gold robes was a toned body. His light brown hair was pulled into a stern bun tucked into a hair gathering crown that matched his Imperial robes. 4MduGt

Jin Xiyan’s face, once soft and round as a child, was now filled out and chiseled smooth without a blemish. His features were like finely cut marble with sharp cheekbones and a strong jaw that flexed as it clenched together. His most striking feature were his eyes, which were the color of the sky during the setting of the sun. The deep purple and red flecks would be hypnotizing if not for the fact they were shooting daggers into Li Changyu at the moment. Jin Xiyan would be considered shockingly attractive by many, but most definitely not to Li Changyu, even though seeing the Emperor again stirred up a lot of old memories and feelings.

“What is that ridiculous thing you are wearing?” Jin Xiyan’s brows pinched together as he glared, pushing the three tiny petals of his huadian on his forehead.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

“This?” He looked down at his martial clothes, which were perfectly acceptable. “What’s wrong with this?”

A muscle in Jin Xiyan’s jaw twitched, “Zhen purchased multiple robes for you as a gift. Did the servants not give them to you?” Ief5iR

Li Changyu had to think fast, because he didn’t want the servants to be scolded, nor did he want to get in trouble either. “I, uhm…woke up late, and I had to rush, so I put the first thing I found on.”

Jin Xiyan’s shoulders fell and he let out a sigh, “Royal Mother will be displeased, but there is nothing Zhen can do about it now.” He jerked his chin towards the archway in the wall. “Come.”

When Jin Xiyan stepped ahead of him to lead, Li Changyu stuck his tongue out at the Emperor. He followed Jin Xiyan into the Empress Dowager’s palace and they waited to be announced before going in.

Jin Qiuye, the Empress Dowager, was once just a low ranked concubine in the Fallen Emperor’s harem. While Li Changyu was in the palace, he still was, but of course his son was the only alpha heir and he was quickly elevated to Empress Dowager status once the real Empress passed away. By the expensive furniture, lavish decorations, and garish jewelry that covered nearly every inch of him, Jin Qiuye was certainly enjoying the riches that came with this upgrade. 7ChfMD

He stood beside Jin Xiyan and bowed before Jin Qiuye, but it was Jin Xiyan who spoke first, “Greetings to Royal Mother.”

“I am confused,” Jin Qiuye’s piercing blue eyes scanned over them, “Where is His Highness the Empress?”

He must not remember me either. Li Changyu took one look at Jin Qiuye’s sour expression and chuckled to himself. Still a bitch, too. Even when he was a low ranking concubine, Jin Qiuye was stuck up and vain. Li Changyu had witnessed many of his tricks against other rival harem members. He covered up his soft laugh with a cough, stepped forward, then kowtowed to Jin Qiuye.

“Erchen is the Empress, Your Highness.” He made sure to keep his voice soft and polite as he spoke, “It is good to see Royal Mother. May I prepare the tea?” yP5ktw

He knew the drill already. As it was the morning after the wedding, he was to make tea for both the Empress Dowager and the Grand Empress Dowager. Some servants brought a small side table with a pot and a cup and set it between Jin Xiyan and Li Changyu. He carefully poured out enough tea in the delicate jade cup and held it carefully between his hands in order to stand. Li Changyu approached the Empress Dowager and knelt down to present the cup to him.

He only caught a glimpse, but Jin Qiuye’s glare managed to be more menacing than his son’s. It felt like he was looking at Li Changyu like he was a bug that he didn’t know whether or not to squish. Jin Qiuye stretched out a smooth hand towards him, and his long fingers barely grazed the cup before he hissed and pulled it back to clutch at his chest.

“Are you hoping to burn me?” Jin Qiuye’s tone was a pitiful whine, like a child’s. “It is much too hot!”

What? He schooled his features to be passive and lowered the cup. Li Changyu inspected the inside and then took a sip from the cup, and the servants standing beside Jin Qiuye gasped. It was perfectly acceptable, not hot enough to destroy the subtle taste of the tea nor cool enough that it was bland. 1sYJGe

He finished the rest of the cup and looked back up at Jin Qiuye, “The water in the pot must have cooled a little more by now. Erchen will–”

Jin Qiuye cut the air with a swipe of his hand and raised his voice, “That is enough. Go back over there and the Royal Son His Majesty will serve me.”

Aaalllriiight then. Li Changyu stood and bowed once more before returning to the small table and setting the cup down. A servant quickly took the cup with a huff and put a fresh one down. Jin Xiyan turned to the table and shot a warning look his way, and Li Changyu ignored it. He watched as the dutiful Son went to his Mother and offered her tea, which miraculously was perfect for the Empress Dowager.

He managed not to roll his eyes and stayed quiet as the Empress Dowager and Jin Xiyan exchanged a few more words. Finally it was time to go so they could greet the Grand Empress Dowager. jvGHd1

Before he turned around all the way, Jin Qiuye said, “Be sure to change into something appropriate when you greet Huang Guifei.”

Does he think I am a bumpkin that doesn’t know how titles work? Or is he testing me? Li Changyu didn’t know what incense Jin Qiuye had inhaled, but if he thought that Li Changyu was a fool, he would correct it now.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Answering His Highness, Erchen knows that it is Huang Guifei who is to greet me.” He tilted his head slightly and feigned a confused pout. “Funnily enough, Huang Guifei failed to do so this morning. I will be sure to pass my reprimand to them later.”

Not to linger any longer than necessary, Li Changyu turned on his heel and whipped his ponytail back to walk out. His foot had just passed through the threshold of the archway when his elbow was grabbed. Jin Xiyan stopped him from going further and held him in a tight grip, but it wasn’t painful. Li Changyu stayed still and looked up at the Emperor, surprised that there was a sudden coldness in his eyes. kiVW35

You do not get to punish Huang Guifei,” he said in a low, firm voice. The way Jin Xiyan emphasized the you was to emphasize Li Changyu’s position as a servant and Wife. It made his eyes narrow at his Husband.

“I said that to your Mother’s benefit, not mine.” He shrugged the shoulder of his free arm. “I could care less if any of your harem greets me.”

“When you speak to me, do it properly.” The bite of annoyance was back in the Emperor’s voice, and Li Changyu was reminded of how his older Brothers used to tease him and he’d get upset. It made him laugh and Jin Xiyan’s eyes narrowed in obvious suspicion.

Li Changyu patted Jin Xiyan’s hand like he was consoling a child. “There, there. Let us visit Royal Grandmother. This Wife is sure that she is eager to see me again.” Qpfahl

Jin Xiyan’s confused frown revealed his dimples and Li Changyu laughed once more. He slipped away from Jin Xiyan’s hold and jogged across the courtyard, “I’ll beat you there if you don’t hurry!”

Conveniently, the Grand Empress Dowager’s palace apartments were just across the way. By convenient, Li Changyu thought that it was a purposeful move on Zhang Yunqing’s part. As the Mother of the Fallen Emperor, she was well respected and still technically controlled the Inner Court. In terms of battle strategy, putting yourself at an advantage to observe your enemy was key. He recalled Grand Empress Dowager’s distaste for the Royal Mother, and she too played the game of politics well. If managing the Inner Court was a battle, the Grand Empress Dowager Zhang Yunqing was a General comparable to his Father.

Li Changyu was not afraid to barge in, because he was sure that the Grand Empress Dowager knew well in advance that he was the one to marry Jin Xiyan and be happy to see him. He ignored Jin Xiyan’s protests and brushed past a flustered, bumbling eunuch to enter the main room.

He peered around and called out with a verse, “I’ve heard them say that The Capital seems like in a game of chess, a hundred years of world events have caused unbearable pain.” l4foAq

“Y-Young Master! You cannot barge in!” A middle-aged servant stepped forward, looking just as alarmed as the eunuch. “This is entirely improper!”

Li Changyu opened his mouth to continue with another line but he was yanked backward by his robes. His back landed against Jin Xiyan’s hard body and the Emperor hissed low in his ear.

“Are you ignorant of decorum, or are you really this shameless?!”

He didn’t have to come back with a smart response because an elegant voice that had a slight rasp rang out, “The palaces of the noblemen all have their new masters, civil and military dress and caps are not like those before.” 3nRhab

Zhang Yunqing entered through a sliding door with a grand flourish of her sleeves. Time made her wrinkles more prominent since the last time he saw her, but her grace in movement didn’t diminish. She wore an elegant white and baby blue set of robes with plum blossoms stretching across her side that traveled down one arm. Her hair was done up in a more subdued style than the Empress Dowager, but held a regal headpiece with multiple beads that framed her greying bun. Her kind eyes were the same color as her grandson’s, and her warm smile brought one to his own face.

“Straight north over mountain passes, gongs and drums ring out,” he responded with the next line. He felt Jin Xiyan’s hold go slack and he took the opportunity to approach Zhang Yunqing. “Conquering the west, carts and horses, feather-hurried dispatches.”

The Grand Empress Dowager stood upright and regal as she finished the last lines, “The fish and dragons are still and silent, the autumn river cold, a peaceful life in my homeland always in my thoughts.”

Zhang Yunqing loved poetry, and while Li Changyu was not as cultured as most young lords, he liked how she recited poetry. When he was young, she would often lecture the First Prince about it, and he took those lessons with him to the military in the form of secret messages. More than a few times he had to rely on it in order to succeed on a mission. FIlQ9o

“Your Highness,” Li Changyu bowed low and Zhang Yunqing touched his chin.

“Get up, get up. Let me have a look at you.” Zhang Yunqing’s smile was radiant and she cupped his cheeks as soon as he stood upright. She pinched them and crooned, “Oh, you little dear! How you have grown! Turn, turn!”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

She let him go and he did what he was told and slowly turned for her. Li Changyu glanced at Jin Xiyan with a smirk. The Emperor stood there with his mouth slightly open, and Li Changyu could see the little brush strokes of equations dancing around Jin Xiyan’s head as he tried to figure out what the hell was going on.

He stopped once he completed a full turn and she beamed at him, “When my Son said you would become His Majesty’s bride, I could hardly believe it.” MkaBPK

The fact the Third Prince Uncle had recommended him was a surprise to him too. He barely knew the man, and from his scant memories of him, he looked like a creepy fellow. Brushing his concerns aside for now, he took Zhang Yunqing’s arm into his and guided her towards her chair in the main room. He glanced back at Jin Xiyan, who was still in motionless shock, and shot him a look and jerked his chin towards the floor.

“A-ah…” Jin Xiyan hurried forward and kowtowed to the Grand Empress Dowager, “Greetings, Royal Grandmother. Zhen is happy to see Your Highness in such good health.”

Zhang Yunqing’s face changed to a stern expression when she looked at the Emperor. Li Changyu remembered that she was particularly strict with Jin Xiyan, likely due to the fact he was the only eligible heir in the generation the Fallen Emperor had made. Though it was to his advantage that Zhang Yunqing liked him, it could be a potential sore spot for Jin Xiyan. He tried to direct the conversation back to him so Jin Xiyan wasn’t in the direct line of fire.

“Your Highness, Erchen is as happy as His Majesty to see you.” Li Changyu knelt down on the floor to Zhang Yunqing’s left and faced her. He placed a hand over one of her’s that rested on the arm of the chair. “May this servant pour Royal Grandmother tea?” cy8ZTq

“Why, you little sweetheart…” Zhang Yunqing pinched his cheek and doted on him while the servants set tea aside for him to prepare. “How is your family? There was a marriage recently, yes?”

“Mmm, Royal Grandmother honors Erchen by remembering,” he cupped the pot with a hand to check the temperature and poured it into her earthenware cup. “Eldest Brother has married an omega male bride.”

“From the North, wasn’t it?” She asked innocently enough. She was trying to pull details from him, but it sounded like she knew a lot already. Zhang Yunqing was once an Empress, after all, and probably knew many tricks. It was reasonable to suspect that she used some to try and collect more information in preparing for his arrival.

“En,” he nodded and held the cup up to her, which she took with a nod in acknowledgement. eAEa7H

After a sip, she looked to the middle aged servant, “Send a set of jade cups to bless the new Li union, and a bolt of silk for the General’s bride.”

Both Li Changyu’s and Jin Xiyan’s eyebrows rose. He bent forward in a bow, “There is not enough thanks in the world to give to Royal Grandmother to express this servant’s appreciation.”

Her raspy chuckle was like a crackling of fire, and she smiled down at Li Changyu. “It is the least I can do, for all the years this one has served the Royal Family and Empire well.” Her eyes shifted towards Jin Xiyan and the room dropped a few degrees in temperature.

“It is also an apology for the Wedding Night. I understand it was Huang Guifei warming the bridal chamber, not Erchen.” TvCc1V

Li Changyu’s eyes darted between Grandmother and Grandson. Jin Xiyan’s stunned expression fell to a tight lipped grimace and the Emperor’s gaze slid down to the floor. Even though he was a man who sat on the Dragon Throne, a few cutting words from a Grandmother he couldn’t please was enough to make Jin Xiyan look like a child once again. A pang of sympathy struck Li Changyu’s heart, urging him to butt in.

“Your Highness misunderstands,” he said and touched the hem of Zhang Yunqing’s robe. He’d often see someone plead like this to the members of the Royal Family. “The fault lies with this Wife. His Majesty was being considerate of Erchen, because…” He tried to play it up a bit by lowering his voice, but it was purposefully a loud whisper so Jin Xiyan could hear. He also dropped his nice speech, “I was a bit scared. It is my fault for not performing my duty, and this brings me great shame.”

He sent a long, sideways glance towards Jin Xiyan, hoping to communicate telepathically. You owe me for taking this cannonball for you, asshole.

Zhang Yunqing’s previously cold demeanor melted as she frowned and her eyes welled up in concern. She took his hands into hers and patted them lightly, “This Grandmother understands that with no omega family members, you would suffer…All is forgiven, and I know you will do well in the future.” She smiled suddenly, and returned to properly speaking, “First Royal Prince is living in the Imperial City once again. I can arrange a meeting in order to help guide you.” aNWB2P

“Prince Lanhu is back?” Li Changyu’s heart skipped a beat, “What happened? This servant thought they were married and lived South.”

The Grand Empress Dowager sighed, “Prime Minister Shenqiao died of smallpox a few months ago and I urged First Prince to return with his son. I think it would be good for her Royal Grandson to have a dear friend once again.”

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

“Of course, Royal Grandmother. Erchen misses this old friend.”

They exchanged a few more words before the couple made their final bows and bid her farewell. Li Changyu left the Grand Empress Dowager’s Palace apartments with a little pep in his step. He was happy to see her alive and well, and of course, with news that the First Prince was here, he’d have another friend on the inside. UoZrLh

Jin Xiyan stopped him when they both reached the marbled path of the courtyard. He turned Li Changyu around to face him, staring deeply into his eyes. Jin Xiyan was close to his face, hovering there, and Li Changyu recalled his childhood incident with him. The brief flash of memory sent a rush of heat to his cheeks and he put some distance between them.

“Why did you do that?” Jin Xiyan asked.

Li Changyu was unsure what he was going to be lectured for, “Do…what?”

“You said it was your fault,” Jin Xiyan frowned. “Though…it sort of was.” EmjTtU

“Yeah, yeah. It kind of was, so what?” He rolled his eyes, “You know, most people would thank someone for that.”

Jin Xiyan made a tch sound and squinted, “And you’re not jealous?”

“Jealous?” Li Changyu’s mouth dropped open and he pointed to himself. “Me? Heavens no. You go put your seed in any one of your consorts. Someone is supposed to pop out an heir, aren’t they?”

A bit of red highlighted Jin Xiyan’s cheeks, “Why do you have to be so vulgar?” He looked around then added with a hiss, “In public?!” 509zW

“I can go back in there and tell Royal Grandmother you are bullying me.” He made a show of lifting his leg to make his way over and called out, “Royal Grandmother!”

“Don’t!” Jin Xiyan grabbed his arm, and Li Changyu stopped. The Emperor dropped his hand and sighed, “How do you know Her Highness so well?”

“You can ask her that yourself if you’re so interested,” he smirked. “She likes me, and I think that’s to your advantage, so just be happy for it.”

There was a long, silent pause, then Jin Xiyan said, “Tonight you will serve me.” mw2XHo

Li Changyu’s stomach immediately bunched into knots. It wasn’t that he was opposed to having sex with Jin Xiyan, but it was just the idea of sex altogether that made him nervous. He’d heard enough stories about how weird it was and that it was painful, and he’d rather be stabbed with an enemy sword since he was far more familiar with that kind of penetration. He swallowed down the wave of nausea that struck him at the thought and nodded stiffly.

“Alright then.”

The poem exchanged between Li Changyu and Zhang Yunqing is a real poem by Du Fu named Autumn Meditations 4. He was a poet during the Tang dynasty. I have altered the name of the city “Chang’an” to Capital City, as it was the capital at the time of the Tang Dynasty. However, given that I am ambiguous on the time period (cough I am clearly influenced by Tang and Ming), I didn’t want to specify a name for the city and present any inaccuracies/falsehoods on a real city.
