I Just Want To Be In A RelationshipCh1 - This role is yours.

The audition hall was completely silent. The tension in the room was palpable, as though there were quiet, yet oppressive undercurrents surging beneath.

The actors who came earlier for the audition had all already taken their own scripts, and as though they were racing against every passing second, they had their heads bowed down as they fervently studied. They resembled students before an examination, desperately making a last ditch attempt to cram anything they could into their heads. ilrY37

Yu Qinghuan was the only one who stood there motionlessly, completely dumbfounded. Even the script that he was holding onto had dropped onto the ground at some unknown point. He was completely out of place with the tense atmosphere.

Yet his blunder was quickly forgiven, and there were even a few ladies who were furiously blushing, occasionally stealing quick glances at him.

There was no shortage of attractive people in the entertainment circle, however, Yu Qinghuan could not only be described as simply attractive. He had elegant eyebrows, a high nose bridge and an exceptionally beautiful pair of peach blossom eyes. His eyes were bright, with large, black pupils that sparkled like a pool of clear spring water, framed by long, thick lashes that beautifully curled up. When he looked at others, the tail end of his eyes would be slightly raised, giving off a feeling of seductiveness, bringing about indescribable feelings.

When his tall and slender figure was added on with his exquisite looks, coupled with his upright posture, even if he was just simply standing in place, he still made for such an alluring image that others couldn’t help looking at. RSa3jf

“Qinghuan, this will be your first battle in the entertainment circle, you must give a good performance!” Manager Yu Xin was however, not in the mood to admire his own actor’s good looks, instead, bending down to pick up those few sheets of paper that had previously fallen and stuffing them back into Yu Qinghuan’s hands. For good measure, he nagged for a while more, “When it comes to your turn later, you must absolutely not get nervous, do you hear? Just pretend that all those judges do not exist! I will be outside, cheering you on.”

Yu Qinghuan had absolutely no reaction to his words; his eyes were constantly staring into the far distance in a daze.

Yu Xin, however, did not find this strange, thinking that he had simply froze in shock due to the scene before him. He gave a pat on his arm and earnestly reiterated, “Qinghuan na, the outcome of your starting point being high or low is dependent on your performance for this battle ah.”

At this moment, Yu Qinghuan finally turned his head very slightly, his gaze fixing on Yu Xin’s face as he hoarsely said, “Yu⸺Xin?”

EGYSB3

Even if they were just two short, simple words, it had been incomparably difficult for him to even utter them. It was as if he were an old machine that had finally been oiled, creaking and squeaking noisily as it started to turn once again.

Ancestors ah!” Yu Xin slapped his thigh, feeling immense heartbreak at his absent-minded attitude and he couldn’t help but drag him to the corner, anxiously whispering into his ear, “Quickly readjust your mental state, the director will definitely not care that this is your first time. I had a hard time securing this opportunity for you, there will not be another chance if we miss this now. Take a good look at those who have come to audition; there are quite a lot of debuted supporting actors, you are but just a newbie, if you don’t perform well, how are you going to compete with the others…”

While Yu Xin was nagging at him incessantly right next to his ears, Yu Qinghuan took a few steps back, leaning against the cool surface of the wall. With an expression full of disbelief and wonder, he slowly but surely took a careful look at his surroundings before ruthlessly pinching his own thigh.

An intense wave of pain pierced through his entire body instantly. Yu Qinghuan closed his eyes before blinking them open once again, and yet, the scenery before him remained the same. oAnqPv

He had really been reborn!

After having been at the pinnacle of the entertainment circle in his previous life, he had once again returned to ten years before, when he was only a twenty one year old newbie entering the industry.

As for where he was currently at, it was at the audition set of the well-renowned Director, Liu Jia’an, for his film 《The Line between Life and Death》— A film that he had been working on for seven whole years.

As soon as the film was released, everyone was all excitedly looking forward to the horrendous box office sales, thinking that Liu Jia’an was nothing more than a fool whom they could laugh at. Who would’ve thought that even with the limited screening time allocated for《The Line between Life and Death》, it would eventually garner an amazing 5.5 billion dollars worth of sales, firmly securing its place as that year’s dark horse. Even after many years had passed since its release, there would often be people who would bring it up as a conversational topic.

Yu Qinghuan was auditioning for the role of the third male lead, Ye Sheng, a young doctor who came from a good family background.

Ye Sheng had been spoiled rotten by his parents since he was a child, and as such, grew up to become a coward who selfishly valued his own life and was extremely afraid of death. Due to the hospital making a mistake in the name registry, he was unfortunately sent to the battlefield as an aid. The bleak and destitute situation slowly tempered him, and he was eventually shot dead by a stray bullet while saving a local little girl.

This role was set to be tall, rich and handsome, with a stylish image. When he was coupled with that large, white coat, his attractiveness was so explosive it eventually set off a new wave of uniformed male gods. Even though he was initially incredibly irritating and unpleasant, he met a tragic end that left an indelible mark on everyone— Like a final stroke of black ink on a pure sheet of paper, forever staining it. The scene had left an incredibly deep impression after the audience had finished viewing. Gf42Rn

Even if the film would eventually flop somehow, there was no fear of losing one’s reputation since it still carried the name of a famous director and well-renowned staff. Hence, Yu Xin attached great importance on Yu Qinghuan’s audition, even going as far as to kindly personally accompany him.

In his previous life, Yu Qinghuan had also auditioned for the role, however, he did not pass the audition.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Liu Jia’an’s comments had been: Able to act, but not expressive enough.

Yu Qinghuan had been outstanding ever since he was young. Even though he was just a newcomer, he was haughty and prideful, thinking that he would definitely secure the role. However, he did not expect that he would finally meet his match, and his mentality eventually crumbled apart, threatening to drag him down into the spiral of depression. It had taken him an extremely long time before he finally managed to overcome this mental block. uFdRHk

Yu Xin was shocked by his actions, jolting up in surprise. Thinking that he had placed too much pressure on him, he immediately grabbed onto his wrist. He was exceptionally gentle with his tone, carefully testing the waters as he coaxed, “Qinghuan, don’t listen to me blabber, just think of this audition as a way to practice your skills and familiarise yourself with the entertainment industry, ah!”

Yu Qinghuan lowered his head to gaze at Yu Xin’s cautious manner. His heart felt warmed. He placed the script onto the stool next to him, suddenly speaking up, “Ge, let’s go back ba. This role doesn’t suit me.”

In his previous life, Yu Qinghuan had no regrets in regard to his career in the entertainment circle. He had already long received all the awards and acted in almost all of the most popular films. He had even managed to garner a massive horde of international fans.

Anyone who saw him would have to respectfully call him “Yu Ge”. This could be considered as having achieved both fame and success. s294 H

There was only one blemish in his almost perfect life. Even after more than ten years in this industry, he had never once experienced love! There wasn’t even the slightest bit of ambiguous feelings!

Yu Qinghuan was naturally bent. Ever since he had entered the entertainment circle, there were eyes everywhere, and everyone was waiting for the day of his eventual downfall.Just for the sake of his future, he had obediently listened to his company and manager, keeping a safe and respectful distance from everyone else, never once daring to get even the slightest bit close to others.

Even until his death, he was known as the entertainment circle’s infamous old virgin. It truly was too shameful to be mentioned!

It hadn’t even been long since his rebirth when Yu Qinghuan resolutely decided on his course of action. wcx1W7

Fuck his image! Fuck his future! The opportunity for a second life was hard to come by. This time, he just wants to properly fall in love!

He had absolutely no interest in following the same path he took in the entertainment industry during his previous life. After this audition, he was going to reject every offer that could be refused and try his best to keep himself out of the public eye. Just wait until his five year contract with the company was fulfilled. He was going to immediately bolt off and leave the entertainment circle!

In any case, if he desired good looks, he had it. If he desired a diploma, he also had it. It wasn’t that hard to find another job.

He wanted to be just like an ordinary person, living a completely peaceful and normal life, eventually finding a compatible lover who he could spend a lifetime with. This was Yu Qinghuan’s greatest dream! wcKpT5

As soon as he heard that, Yu Xin turned pale with fright. “Go back, what do you mean go back! I don’t care, even if you do nothing but stand there like a block of wood up that stage, you still have to go!” Thinking that his own actor was suffering from stage fright, Yu Xin secretly pondered in his heart. He was going to wait until they went back to come up with a schedule and carefully train up his mental strength. Otherwise, how else was he going to have the resolve to face the bright lights of stardom that would follow him like a shadow in the future.

Ge, listen to me.” Yu Qinghuan’s voice was incredibly pleasant, the tone was bright and clear. He spoke in a calm and gentle manner, and those who heard his voice would unconsciously feel soothed. “I’m not scared. I had carefully mulled over the script yesterday already. Ye Sheng is a character that I may barely be able to portray in the earlier stages. However, with my current abilities, the later scenes are definitely impossible for me to pull off successfully.”

In regards to Yu Xin, Yu Qinghuan was truly grateful towards him. Even though this man was rather cunning, he still genuinely treated him well. Seeing how he had no parents, it did not matter where or when, he would always graciously take care of Yu Qinghuan more.

However, Yu Qinghuan had not gotten to know him for long when just a mere few months after the filming of 《The Line between Life and Death》, Yu Xin was sending his most popular artist to a set when he abruptly met with a car crash and died on the spot. Yu Qinghuan had not been able to see him even at his last moments. KdBh0o

Fortunately, there was still a chance to start all over again.

Ge, I feel like the most important thing as of now is to temper myself. Let’s wait until my acting matures more, it would still not be too late, otherwise I would only drag down the others.”

Yu Qinghuan spewed complete nonsense with a straight face.

“Don’t you dare sweet talk me!” Yu Xin narrowed his eyes, his face full of disapproval. This was an opportunity that was hard to come by. Even though he was a little uncertain, yet deep in his heart he still held a sliver of hope for Yu Qinghuan. Hynkq0

Yu Xin’s expression was indifferent, but based on Yu Qinghuan’s understanding of him, he still keenly caught the flash of hesitation in his eyes. He jumped at the opportunity to persuade Yu Xin more eagerly, to the point where he was oblivious to the sound of approaching footsteps behind him.

Yu Xin’s heart had plunged into a turmoil from Yu Qinghuan’s pleading. He was in no mood to bother turning his head towards the footsteps.

The two people bickered for a long time until Yu Qinghuan’s throat was beginning to go dry. Yet, Yu Xin still remained unconvinced.

There were very few people remaining in the audition hall, and Yu Qinghuan was the last in line. He took a look at the number slip in his hands. If he continued attempting to make a case for himself, it would not be long before it was his turn to audition. RjYwyE

With the current level of his acting abilities, he could guarantee that if he really auditioned, then there was no need to even mention the mere third lead. He could even easily secure the role of the first male lead. Therefore, he absolutely mustn’t go for the audition. His original intention was to just lie low before quietly slipping out of the entertainment circle.

Just as he was about to once again persistently attempt to move Yu Xin’s heart, a loud voice brimming with appreciation rang out behind him, “This lil’ fella really isn’t bad! There really aren’t many actors these days who are able to stick to their original aspirations ah!”

Yu Qinghuan and Yu Xin’s gazes momentarily paused in the direction of the sound as they turned their heads. The person approaching them was none other than the director of 《The Line between Life and Death》, Liu Jia’an!

Liu Jia’an was initially only coming out to take a breather. Most of the actors present today had already auditioned, but not a single one had ever satisfied him! They had either acted in a greasy, coquettish manner, or they had intentionally puffed up their small frames, pretending to be a man of steel. The very sight made him feel sick to the stomach. fyCdhn

《The Line between Life and Death》was afterall, a film that he had prepared for so many years. In order to have full control over its production, he had carefully screened through each and every investor, only finalising his choice after heavily scrutinising them. There was no need to even mention his high standards for the actors.

However, he knew that he was currently nothing more than a director past his prime. His popularity had long since waned, and there definitely wasn’t going to be any bigshots who would come and audition for the role of a mere third male lead.

He could not recruit those with good acting skills, and those that he could invite were the ones he did not want.

The more that Liu Jia’an thought, the more irritated he became, and he eventually could not be bothered to watch the subsequent auditions. He was going to grit his teeth and endure the embarrassment, resorting to using his connections to recruit a somewhat decent actor he was acquainted with. Who would’ve thought that he would stumble upon the conversation between Yu Qinghuan and his manager. KwrAp9

This lil’ fella was both attractive and had a good temperament, but most importantly, he was still steadfast in his personal beliefs and did not let fame get to his head. Even if his acting skills weren’t that great, as long as he was around, he would still be able to more or less temper him. What was even better was that new actors had no achievements to their name, and would be both obedient and willing to learn. It was much better than inviting a bigshot!

In that split second, Liu Jia’an came to a decision.

He took a glance at Yu Qinghuan’s number tag, then gave him a once-over. While Yu Xin was trembling, hesitating over whether it was a good time to speak up and greet him, he suddenly said, “What matters is not improving your acting behind closed doors, but following a good director. That is the most important.”

He paused for a while, before smiling whilst looking at him, “I’ve been observing you for quite a long time already. This lil’ fella is both explicit with his words and very sensible. He is very suitable to portray Ye Sheng’s later scenes. No need to audition anymore, this role is yours.” yhgald

Yu Qinghuan: “???”

Yu Xin: “!!!”

Translator's Note

Raws says 临时抱佛退, which directly translates to “Hugging Buddha’s thighs at the last minute”. It’s a sort of saying to show how desperate one is. Think of it as praying right before a major exam.

Translator's Note

Raws says 桃花眼 which directly translates to “Peach blossom eyes”. It’s quite a common saying in Chinese novels. I’m not sure how to explain how they look like, so here’s a link to a list of common eye shapes that are usually described in Chinese novels.

Translator's Note

Raws says 加油, which directly translates to “Add oil”. It’s a term that’s used similarly to the Korean equivalent, “Hwaiting/Fighting”, which means to cheer someone on, “All the best”, or even“Good luck”.

Translator's Note

呐 (na),啊 (ah). They’re modifiers/filler words that don’t mean anything, but in Chinese, they’re often used to add a sort of flair to the sentence. Different endings (e.g. 哦 (oh), 呢 (ne), 啦 (la) etc.) will cause the meaning of the sentence to differ slightly. The sentence above has a very comforting, almost teasing-like tone that still maintains a level of strictness with the use of “na” and “ah”. It would have been very different had Yu Xin used ”la”, which would’ve made the sentence sound a lot more flippant.

Translator's Note

Raws says 祖宗, which literally means “Ancestors”. Thanks for commenter mediolavuelta for bringing up that it’s more so of him being exasperated with the hard-to-deal-with Qinghuan. There’s also another possible meaning where “Ancestors ah” could mean something close to “Oh my god” or “Geez”.

Translator's Note

Raws says 错过了这个村就没有这个店了 which roughly translates to, “Once you miss this village, there will never be another shop as good as this.” It’s an idiom to mean “If you miss this chance, it will be very hard to meet with a similar opportunity once again.” Thanks Baidu, I’ll leave a link to the explanation here!

Translator's Note

Raws said 完美收官 which means something like “Perfect ending”. I couldn’t really find an exact English equivalent, but amazing is about as close a fit I could think of.

Translator's Note

Raws says 高富帅 which literally means “Tall, rich, handsome”. It’s a famous phrase used for attractive men.

Translator's Note

男神 Male god. A man who is like an idol, incredibly attractive and amazing in many aspects.

Translator's Note

Raws says 扑街, which technically means “To make a loss”, but thanks to my dad, he gave a cantonese explanation which I think fits the context better, hence, I translated it to “The movie flopped”.

Translator's Note

Raws says 没成想上就遭到了滑铁卢 which directly translated would be “He didn’t think he would have encountered Waterloo”. It’s quite a common phrase that means “Finally failing in something after having been successful for so long”. Interestingly enough, it’s also quite a common phrase used for Chinese celebrities with the aforementioned meaning. Thanks Baidu once again! If you want a more comprehensive explanation, here is a link!

Translator's Note

哥 (Ge) Literally “Older brother”. The full term would be 哥哥 (Gege), so “Ge” is similar to saying “Bro”. I kept it as “Ge” instead since I find the english equivalent doesn’t quite capture the essence. It’s more of an affectionate, friendly way of referring to/calling an older guy, it does not mean they are blood related! “Ge” is also used to show respect to an older generation, which is why “Bro” doesn’t really quite convey that nuance.

Translator's Note

吧 (ba) Just another way to end your sentences. It’s meant to make Yu Qinghuan’s tone seem a lot more resigned and casual; almost as if he doesn’t really care or has accepted the situation. Not sure how to give an example, but I tend to use it like this: “Okay ba”, “Do it like that ba”, “No need ba”.

Translator's Note

Raws says 天生弯 which roughly translates to being naturally gay. Being “bent” is a way to refer to being gay, since you’re not straight. Haha. Funny joke.

Translator's Note

Raws said 著名 which actually translates to “Famous” or “Well-known”. It doesn’t particularly make sense to say famous in regards to him never having papapa’d. Contextually, it’s meant to be a sarcastic statement so I figured that infamous was a better word to use.

Translator's Note

Raws says 说起来简直丢人 which could be roughly translated to it was too embarrassing/disgraceful to be mentioned. 丢人 is very similar to 丢脸 (To lose face), which in Chinese is a way to say that you have lost your dignity, to be disgraced etc.

Translator's Note

Raws said 胡说八道 which means talking nonsense/bullshit.

Translator's Note

Raws said 花言巧语 which can be roughly translated to “Flowery nonsense”. In short, Yu Xin’s just scolding him for being shameless and using flattering words to try and weasel his way out of the audition.

Translator's Note

Raws said 掰扯 which kind of means speaking sense to someone.

Translator's Note

Raws said 小伙子 which directly translates to “Little fellow”. 小 does mean small/little but it’s used in a more affectionate and casual manner.

Translator's Note

Raws said 搔首弄姿 which is a phrase that roughly means to stroke or twirl one’s hair in a coquettish manner. It’s just used to describe someone who’s acting in a flirtatious manner.

Translator's Note

Not sure if the author made a typo. Instead of saying 能请来的他又不想要, which would mean “He did not want those that he was able to invite”, the raws instead say 能请来的他又不要想, meaning “He did not even want to think about those he could invite, as they were undesirable.”

Translator's Note

Raws said 豁出脸皮 which would directly translate to “Peel off the skin of face”. It’s a little hard to translate it literally, but it roughly means something close to having your face slapped, i.e. Losing one’s dignity or being embarrassed. Here’s a link with an explanation on Baidu!

  1. Thanks for the work!

But translator-sama, I don’t think ‘Ancestor’ in this case is used for cursing. It’s more like Yu Xin lamenting a hard to handle important person, like ‘Oh my Ancestor!’ (Blame me, but the image popping out in my mind is shit-shoveling officers palacating their Ancestor Kitty)

    • Thank you so much for bringing this up! I’ll edit it now~ T T Totally missed it the first time… I left the “swearing” in when really it’s just meant to be an exclaimation of something close to “Oh my god”.

  2. I had to make an account here to say that ‘I Just Want to Be in a Relationship’ is my favorite novel to date. I found the novel hard to read back then because of grammar and dialogue issues but even then I gave it 5 stars and my love for it never suffered because of that. It’s been over a year since I read it, but now I can’t wait to read the new translation here. Thank you so much!

  3. Just started reading! Chapter 1 and I’m laughing out loud already HAHAHA thank you for the chapter!
