Seth looked at himself in the mirror. His mom made sure that his uniform was neat and clean. Seth combed and styled his hair. He was planning to get a haircut on the weekend because his hair grew a bit longer than the permissible length his school required. He sprayed perfume on his body. Seth grabbed his bag and went outside his room.
Seth found his mom humming a playful tune in the kitchen. Seeing his mom happy brought a warm feeling into his heart.
“Good morning, mom…” Seth greeted his mother. He sat on the dining chair and started eating breakfast.
“Good morning, dear…” His mom gave Seth a bright smile. “Here’s your lunch bag.” His mom put two lunch bags on the table. “The other one is for Gilbert.”
Seth couldn’t help but laugh. “I think, the bag is too small for Gil’s lunch.”
“There are three sets of meal inside—enough for three people. Do you think, it’s not yet enough for Gilbert?” His mom’s showed a worried expression.
Seth shook his head while smiling. “It’s enough. I am just teasing you, mom. Gil will be too happy that you made him lunch. He’d be over the moon!”
It was the first time Seth’s mom had packed a lunch bag for Gil. Knowing Gil, the guy had a huge appetite. It was not an exaggeration to say that Gil could eat a boar by himself. Three sets of meal might be pretty underwhelming. But, Seth knew Gil would be so happy that his mom took the time to cook for him. Seth was excited to see Gil’s reaction the moment he would hand him the lunch bag. He was sure Gil would cry. Ha-ha.
“Ahm, I’d like to thank you also for doing this, Seth. I love you!” His mom said.
Seth just smiled. What his mom was talking about was the fact that Seth woke up early today just to meet Uncle Carl. The doctor told Seth last night that he wanted to talk. But because of Uncle Carl’s hectic schedule, the only free time that he had was in the morning. There was still an hour and a half left before school would start. The plan was like this: Uncle Carl would fetch Seth from his mom’s house. Then, they would drive around, talked man to man, and afterward, Uncle Carl would bring Seth to school.
“Oh, he’s here.” They heard a car pull up in front of the house. “I won’t tell you to be kind to your Uncle Carl because I already know you’re a respectable kid.”

A few minutes later, Seth was sitting on the passenger seat of Uncle Carl’s car. The latter was being quiet at first. Maybe Uncle Carl was still collecting his thoughts. Seth let him be. He knew Uncle Carl’s intentions toward his mom were sincere and genuine.
“I’m sorry, Seth.” Those were the first words that came out from Uncle Carl’s mouth when he decided to finally speak. “I should have invited you to a fancy restaurant or a nice place in general. But here we are, inside my car. Please don’t think that because I’m too busy, I will have an excuse to neglect your mom. I want to be the best person for her. I am planning to reduce my workload this coming—”
“No.” Seth interrupted. “Don’t say those things, Uncle Carl. I am okay with this set up. You don’t need to invite me to a fancy place. Here is fine.” Seth smiled. “And you don’t have to reduce your workload just to prove that you love my mom. She understands the nature of your work. If anything, mom would be disappointed when she learns that you let go of some of your patients just to make time for her. My mom is very unique. She loves a responsible man. You’re doing great, Uncle Carl. You don’t have to change anything.”
The man stopped the car on the side of the road. Seth saw Uncle Carl wiping his tears away. “Thank you, Seth. When I first saw Monica at the hospital, I knew she’s the one I want to spend my life with. You’re right. Monica is one of a kind. I love her. Thank you for giving me a reason to continue and a new hope that my life isn’t shitty after all. I look forward to every day just to be with you. Thank you.”
Seth smiled and squeezed Gil’s hand.
The two walked without noticing the stares they received from other students. Well, they simple didn’t care.
When Seth and Gil reached the classroom, they notice a bunch of junk foods and drinks on top of Seth’s desk.
“Who put these junks on Seth’s desk?” Gil asked their classmates. His voice was scary.
Paul, Seth’s seatmate, raised his hand. “Ah, they’re from me and from some of our classmates.” Paul kneeled down in front of Seth. “Midterm exams are coming. Please, teach us how and what to study. Please, Seth, you’ve managed to change and you even won an award. You are our idol now. Please we’re begging you.” Some of their classmates even joined Paul in kneeling down.
“Freaking idiots!” Gil sneered at them. “Seth is too busy to spend time with you. So, scram!”
“It’s okay, Gil.” Seth stepped in to the conversation. “I don’t know if I’m going to be an effective teacher, it’s your call.”
“No! You’re going to be a great teacher. Please, Seth!”
He sighed. “Okay. I’ll spare two hours for our study session after our afternoon class. Will that be all right?”
“Of course, it’s all right! You’re being too generous to these pipsqueaks.” Gil commented.
“Thank you, Seth!” Paul and the rest stood up and left him and Gil.
“Are you sure it’s all right with you?”
Seth nodded his head. Gil helped him so much that he wanted to pay it forward by helping their classmates to study. “It won’t be too hard for me because I know you’ll be there.”
“Of course! I won’t leave your side.”
Seth gave Gil his warmest smile. He wanted to hug his boyfriend but they heard the school bell ring.
Gil kissed the back of Seth’s hand in lightning speed. Then, Gil went to his own seat.
Seth felt so happy the entire day.
