Simon Walsh was greeted by the housemaid when he arrived home. But instead of greeting the poor lady back, Simon threw his school bag to the lady and cursed under his breath: “Fucking old lady. Don’t get near me, your breath stinks.”
The housemaid looked down in embarrassment. Simon didn’t care at all. He went straight to his room on the second floor. After closing the door, Simon kicked the chair in his room with all his might. A frustrated scream also came out from his mouth. Seeing Gilbert with that puny looking Seth Wiley annoyed the hell out of him. Simon let out a scream again. Fuck.
Being with Gilbert for years had been a fun and joyous experience for Simon. He saw how the genius Gilbert owned the world. Simon was also there when Gilbert started to self-destruct leaving all his hard-earned recognitions and awards down the drain. Simon was too happy to see Gilbert ruin his own life.
When Gilbert stopped going to school, Simon thought he could steal Gilbert’s thunder and replaced him as the genius kid in the eyes of Gilbert’s dad. When Gilbert came back acting like a gangster, Simon was in paradise. There was nothing he wanted more than seeing Gilbert looked like a fool. Simon’s goal in life was to become a true Hugo. One that would inherit everything. Simon wanted everything that belonged to Gilbert—his wealth, his status, and his father.
Simon Walsh grew up in an orphanage. He didn’t even know his biological parents because Simon was left by an unknown person outside the orphanage when he was just a baby. Growing up, he showed maturity and intelligence that amazed everyone in the orphanage. Hence, he got adopted by Senator Hugo years later.
Well, Simon was adopted by the old man not as a son but as someone who would serve the heir of the Hugo family which was Gilbert. Simon was trained to become the right-hand man of Gilbert Hugo when the time to inherit his father’s legacy arrived.
But at the back of Simon’s mind, he knew he was not destined to be just a cannon fodder. Since he was a kid, he knew that he was special. Being adopted in an affluent family like the Hugos was just his first step. Simon always believed that he was destined to become someone great.
When Gilbert started his rebellious phase, Simon thought that the old man Hugo would be disappointed of his child. However, the old man asked Simon to talk some sense into Gilbert. Simon agreed, though deep inside, he had no intention to do what he was told. Simon would talk to Gilbert on the surface, but in truth, he would say things to Gilbert that would strain the relationship between the father and son even further.
However, seeing Gilbert getting chummy with Seth Wiley irritated Simon. At this point, he didn’t want some stupid kid putting ideas into Gilbert’s head. Seth Wiley used to be a timid kid and the one who was getting bullied by his classmates. But now, Seth Wiley showed a shocking improvement not only with his studies but with his personality as well. Simon didn’t want anyone who was serious in life like Seth Wiley get near anywhere Gilbert. Seth could influence Gilbert to go back to his old self. Simon didn’t want that to happen. Gilbert should not stop ruining his own life, so that Simon could take his place as the new heir.
Simon would do anything to make Seth stay away from Gilbert. His threat didn’t seem to be effective toward Seth. At this point, Simon was planning to do more than spewing threats to his enemy. He would make sure that Seth Wiley would regret being associated with Gilbert.
While Simon was busy with his thoughts, he heard someone knocked on his door. It was followed by the voice of the housemaid informing Simon that Senator Hugo had arrived.
Simon made sure that he looked his best before coming out of his room. He went downstairs, straight to Senator Hugo’s office.
“Dad!” Simon exclaimed upon seeing the old man. The way Senator Hugo twitched his face when he heard the word ‘dad’ didn’t escape Simon. But he didn’t mind. The old man could make faces all he wanted, but Simon would call him dad until he named him as the new heir.
“Ahm, Simon. How was school?”

The angry voice of Senator Hugo interrupted him. “Then why the hell are you still here, mumbling nonsense like I care. Get out of here and do your job properly. Talk to Gilbert and put some sense into him. Otherwise, don’t you dare show your face to me again! Are we clear?”
Simon clenched his fist. “Y-yes, sir.”
When he came back to his room, Simon punched his pillows repeatedly. Someday, he would make not only Gilbert but also his father pay for how they treated him. Simon swore that he would get what he truly deserved. No one could stand in his way. No one.
Simon managed to compose himself. He was ready for another day.

Seth was having a hard time inserting the key in the key hole. The thought that Gil was standing so close behind him, Seth could feel Gil’s breath on his nape, made him panic a little. When Gil noticed Seth struggling with the key, Gil put his hands on Seth’s shoulders and told him to slow down. However, it made Seth feel more nervous than ever. Luckily, after several attempts, Seth finally managed to insert the key and open the door.
As promised, Seth and Gil were going to study together in the former’s house. Seth had been cleaning his room since last night and before going to school that morning. He made sure that everything was in their proper places. Seth even sprayed air freshener several times and he even replaced his bed sheet and pillowcase with newly washed ones. Seth wanted everything to look perfect for Gil.
“Come in. Make yourself at home.” He said to Gil upon opening the front door.
“Thanks…” Gil took off his shoes.
The two went straight to Seth’s room.
“Your room looks nice.” Gil commented while looking around Seth’s room. “Oh, you like this actor, huh?” Gil was looking at the poster of a famous actor plastered on the wall.
“A-ahm, y-yeah?” The truth was, Seth did like the actor when he was seventeen. But now that he was redoing his life, he didn’t remove the poster just because he wanted to preserve everything he had when he was in his teens. Truth be told, Seth had long forgotten his affection toward the actor on the poster. Heck, he didn’t even have an idea what happened to the guy in the future.
Seth brought out the study materials his mom bought for him and placed them on the table. He was seriously preparing for his study with Gil when he noticed that his classmate climbed up on his bed and lay down there without any care in the world.
“Gil, what are you doing?”
“You told me to make myself at home. That’s what I’m doing…” Gil smelled and hugged the pillow.
“H-hey!” Seth’s face was red in embarrassment. Thank goodness, he thought of replacing his bed sheet and pillow case last night. They didn’t smell weird, right?
“It smells like you…” Gil commented as if he was reading Seth’s mind. “It smells wonderful…” Gil closed his eyes and started to doze off.
Seth couldn’t do anything but shook his head. Seeing Gil sleeping comfortably on his bed made Seth feel happy. He didn’t know why. He just felt like it was the most natural thing in the world. Gil on his bed. Yeah, perfect.
Seth studied by himself. From time to time, he would take a peek toward Gil’s direction to make sure that he was still sleeping comfortably. Seth became engrossed with studying. He didn’t know how much time had passed.
When Seth encountered a difficult math problem he couldn’t do anything but scratch his head. He tried solving the problem different ways but to no avail.
“If you’re having a hard time, you can always ask for my help.”
Seth immediately raised his head and saw Gil sitting on the bed.
“Oh…” that was the only thing that came out of Seth’s mouth upon seeing how glorious Gil looked like after waking up.
Gil’s hair looked disheveled. His cheeks were both red and his eyes still looked sleepy.
Seth found himself biting his lower lip. What a handsome man! Fuck…
“Seth, are you okay?” Gil stood up from the bed and walked toward Seth’s direction. He sat on the floor beside Seth. “Let’s see what problem is giving you a hard time.”
For Seth, it felt like an out of the body experience. It seemed like he was just there watching Gil being the perfect man that he was. Seth witnessed how Gil solved the math problem without wasting time. Gil was explaining everything to Seth, but Seth was just in awe. He kept on looking at Gil’s face. He couldn’t take his eyes off him.
“Seth, are you listening?” Gil turned his face toward Seth’s direction. But because Seth was also looking at Gil, their eyes met.
Seth gasped for air though he didn’t move an inch from Gil. He wet his lips out of nervousness. He saw Gil looking at him intently.
Seth noticed that Gil’s face was getting closer and closer… But, Seth remained still. He gulped. Then, Seth closed his eyes as if he was anticipating for something.
Oh God! Oh, God! Oh, God! Seth screamed in his mind.
Any moment now, Seth and Gil were going to kiss. They were going to kiss. Oh, kiss—
The alarm clock rang. Seth immediately opened his eyes. He saw Gil’s confused look. Their faces were still close with each other. Though, the magic of the moment was obviously vanished on thin air. Shit.
Seth stood up and turned off the alarm. He set that up earlier this morning, so that Seth would know if it was time to fetch his mom from work.
“I…I’m sorry…” Seth couldn’t look at Gil. “I need to fetch my mom from work. You can stay here—”
“I’ll come with you, Seth.” Gil said.
Seth coughed his embarrassment away. “O-okay, let’s go.”
The two left the house in an awkward silence. But when Seth felt Gil’s hand hold his, everything in the world felt better again.

I can also say from personal experience of dealing with a parental unit narcissist (like Gil’s politician daddy) – the only safe place is far, far away and out of the house. You are assigned roles by the narcissist. In this case, Simon is is the “assistant” and Gil is the “mini me heir”. No matter what the boys do or say, it will never change a narcissist ‘s view of their cast roles. Once a narcissist makes up their mind about something, that is “the truth” in the world. Children who grow up under these regimes have a lot of anger as an effect of the amount of emotional/psychological trauma suffered. I don’t know how close the story is to RL psychology but it IS reasonable that Gil has a lot of pent up anger (which he took out on thugs). It is also reasonable that his grades nosedived – when dealing with a narcissistic parent I have seen people survive by becoming like them (Simon) or by finding small ways to rebel until they can get out (Gil). (For me, I used sarcasm because my parent didn’t understand it.)
