It’s explained in a previous chapter by his mother. In short, They briefly had a relationship but when he went back to city, he chose arranged marriage better for his future completely dismissed her and her feelings.

I’m honestly glad Shen Yan found Qi Jing in this life and that relationship helped him grow and and become a better him. I could feel his struggle and it just broke my soul every damn time. (〒﹏〒) Same for five I’m glad he found out the truth not long after and tried to make amend in every possible way. Like SY said, I understand his reasoning but as someone older and supposedly mature, to be blinded by one side of the story and destroy a person that much…. it just leave a bad taste in the mouth filled with disappointment.
