Hi guys, I’m the new translator of this novel. I’ll start giving this novel a regular update after I have recruited editors. And again read at your own risk cause of the big cliffhanger but don’t worry I’ll post a new chapter soon this week.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

When the Japanese troops on the beach boarded the warship, there was a loud rumble in the sky, and a torrential rain poured down from the long-brewing dark clouds. The waves surged, pushing the warship to gradually leave the island.

Agares and I lurked in the dark seawater, following the course of the warship. Taking advantage of the momentum of the storm, we forced the warship to slow down amidst the waves. Agares swiftly took me, and we dived down to the bottom of the warship. Overhead, there were several propellers driving the ship forward, struggling against the resistance of the waves and churning the sea into chaos. I speculated that Agares intended to use his electric current power to disable the propulsion of the warship. But just then, he suddenly released my hand and used his tail to wrap around my body. Before I could even comprehend his actions underwater, a dazzling blue sphere flashed before my eyes and shot directly towards the propellers! GR1DrA

In an instant, the piercing sound of the propellers’ friction reverberated above like a scream. As a cluster of white light exploded, I found myself being carried upward by Agares and leaping out of the sea surface. The powerless warship seemed like a headless fly, losing its course. Regardless of where Shinichi and his accomplices’ true intentions were and the sinister plans they had for the young mermaids, the vast sea tonight would become their “end point.”

Taking advantage of a high wave, we silently climbed up the rear of the warship. It was a platform resembling an observation station, with a small lookout room next to it. I noticed two soldiers standing inside. However, on a stormy night like this, with darkness and strong winds, it wouldn’t be easy for them to spot me and Agares. We crouched down, carefully manoeuvring around the lookout room, and took advantage of the deck lights scanning in the opposite direction to sweep through to another direction. Agares held onto my body, and like lightning, we darted into the narrow gap beneath the deck and the bulkhead. It was a dark and damp space.

I looked around and found that there was a neat row of notches on the bulkheads on both sides, through which the outside world could be seen. This seemed to be a bilge for rainwater drainage, but there was a faint smell of blood around, which made me somewhat nervous.

b 70WP

“It’s the smell of young mermaids mixed with human blood. Get on my back.”

Agares lowered his voice behind me, and as I turned around, I saw him crouching down and without hesitation, he lifted me onto his back. I was taken aback for a moment, but he was already like a large crocodile carrying its young, using his strong arms to support both my weight and his own. His long fish tail slithered and swayed behind him as we crawled forward at an astonishing speed. I was certain that even if I were to stand up and run, I wouldn’t be able to surpass Agares’ gliding speed. If anyone happened to come here to investigate, they would surely be scared to their death by Agares and me.

We followed the source of the bloody scent and delved deeper into the interior of the drainage cabin. Faintly, there was some light seeping through the gaps in the upper deck, and occasional fragmented footsteps could be heard. The smell of blood grew stronger, and I suspected that we had entered the hinterland of the warship, with the place where the young mermaids were likely stored nearby. Suddenly, I heard the voices of two people coming from above, but because the deck had some soundproofing, I couldn’t make out what they were saying. So, I straightened my back and pressed my ear against the deck ceiling. Agares flipped over and stared at me, clearly noticing the commotion above us as well.

“Is that so… Has his mutation already begun?” MJ v8f

“Now there are some rejection reactions, but it is still within a controllable stage. The mermaid organs are growing inside him, and his legs are in the fusion phase. It is expected that he will soon exhibit the appearance of a mermaid.”

“It’s a miracle… Only he survived out of the thirty test subjects. Let me have a look at this fellow with tenacious vitality, Levjet.”

“Please, come in.”

I stood there, mouth half agape, frozen in shock. What astonished me was not only the mention of the experiment involving transplanting mermaid organs into a human body but also the identity of the two individuals in the conversation— one was the miraculously surviving Shinichi, and the other turned out to be my own grandfather. It sounded as though they were involved in this horrifying research project together. How could this be? How could my grandfather be working with Shinichi? Were all his expressions of love for me just a facade? Was he also treating me as bait in their plan? 6upn7f

No… no, maybe he was coerced by Shinichi…

As I emphasised in my mind, many scattered questions from my memories converged, as if forming a mirror that gradually reflected certain strange experiences from my childhood. It cruelly pointed towards a possibility that I couldn’t believe and didn’t want to believe. The eerie dream I had several years ago suddenly became clear in my mind—the white building interior, my younger self, and the other children undergoing examinations together…

That scene really existed in my childhood, and it was closely related to my grandpa.

My brain was buzzing, and cold sweat dripped from my forehead. pa0kT

“Desharow?” Agares, with his deep eyes, stared at me. Suddenly, he tightly wrapped his arm around my neck and pulled me into his embrace, as if he knew what I was recalling. His webbed claw gently stroked my back, offering comfort. However, I couldn’t stop sweating coldly all over, and my thoughts unravelled like a runaway horse in the tunnel of memories, picking up the faint traces of those forgotten memories.

I recall when I was six years old and staying in Norway, my grandpa would take me to a hospital every month. There, my body’s values were meticulously measured and recorded, and samples of hair, blood, and even saliva were taken one by one. However, thanks to Agares’s spores, there was no disease in my body. So, what was the purpose of such frequent physical examinations? And what was the purpose of bringing those young children of my age to that hospital?

The webbed claws on my back trembled, and suddenly tightened around my body, hugging me firmly. His nose was pressed against my forehead, and his lips blocked my unspoken words. My nostrils were filled with Agares’s smell. I subconsciously inserted my fingers into his hair as if grabbing a life-saving straw, knelt down, lowered my head and buried my face in the crook of his neck. My heart felt as if two beasts were fighting fiercely in it. I didn’t want to doubt my impression of the grandfather who took utmost care of me and was also involved in this conspiracy. But now, what I know contradicts my past memories to the extreme. Caught between my ingrained emotions and seemingly logical speculations, my thoughts suddenly lost their direction. JTH2IA

“Tell me…Agares, do you know what my grandfather is involved in all of this? Do you know?” I took a deep breath and asked with difficulty in a low voice.

Agares was silent for a while, and I felt his fingertips gently rubbing against the base of my ear as if he was hesitating about something. Now I’m sure Agares knew what I wanted to know. I clasped his wrist and looked up at him. “If you know something about me, then don’t hide it from me! I want to know myself. I will go to Atlantis with you, but only if… I get to know the truth. Otherwise, I’ll leave your side and find out what I want to know by myself.”

“Desharow!” His body became stiff, and his emotions seemed to be aroused by my words, “Your grandfather, the man named Levjet, was once the emissary I sent to the human world.”

“Emissary? You are saying my grandfather was originally a mermaid?” FAulzZ

“Yes, a hundred years ago I planned to launch a large-scale war against mankind.”

“Why?” I asked in surprise.

“For survival.” Agares squinted his eyes. “The Earth’s oceans serve as the outer protective layer of Atlantis. The more severe the damage humans inflict on the marine environment, the more precarious Atlantis becomes. Our normal reproductive system has been completely disrupted by the warming seawater. In order to prevent our descendants from vanishing forever, we have evolved another method of expanding our population—”

“By invading and assimilating humans at the cellular level?” wkKBlM

Agares nodded. “So I dispatched some excellent emissaries, hoping that they would mimic human genetic variations and reproduce with human females to conceive offspring. Then, through the dispersal and transformation of ‘Yoila’, all the resulting males would return to our lineage, becoming our warriors to aid us in waging this war and conquering the oceans.”

I shook my head in disbelief, imagining the scenario of a real war between merfolk and humans, and then suddenly remembered the current situation in Atlantis, and subconsciously murmured, “But your war plan was interrupted by that sudden nuclear bomb….”

“If Atlantis hadn’t been destroyed, we would have conquered the oceans. We would have become the masters of the sea.” Agares whispered in my ear, emphasising the final syllables.

Rubbing the space between my eyebrows, I felt a mixture of emotions swirling within me. I didn’t know how to respond to Agares at that moment. As a descendant of both humans and merfolk, so of course, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness for the current fate of Atlantis. But deep down, I couldn’t bring myself to wholeheartedly endorse Agares or acknowledge his ideal as a true utopia. I didn’t want to witness a large-scale war between merfolk and humans, as it would likely be as devastating as a world war, an unimaginable disaster in itself. Y2dxcF

“I know what you’re thinking, Desharow.” Agares gently pressed down on my head. “You don’t have to agree with me. Just like humans, there are disagreements among the merfolk. Levjet is one of them. He was born earlier than me and is older than me. He is the only elder who is qualified to compete with me for the leadership position. I should have realised that he harboured extraordinary ambitions. After Atlantis was destroyed, he started cooperating with humans to cultivate his own power. And through some kind of drug, he maintained his human form for an extended period, intending to control the remaining young merfolk and the ambitious human army to replace my position. When I discovered his treacherous intentions, I killed him.”

I shivered violently and looked at him in shock. “So…the shipwreck when I was six years old wasn’t actually a shipwreck…you appeared there because…”

“Yes. I couldn’t tolerate him continuing to use you. You are indeed the offspring of his union with a human woman, but it was me who protected you and loved you during your childhood. Do you understand, Desharow? I am your only true ancestor.” Agares said, gripping my chin and locking his deep gaze with my eyes. “You don’t have to be saddened by him.”

His eyes seemed to have a web, ready to completely envelop me, leaving no room for me to escape. My thoughts became tangled, as if my memories were a chessboard that had been completely flipped, and all the pieces had shifted from their original positions. QuZ9A7

However, at that moment, faint sounds came from above. Agares suddenly sat up, staring intently at the ceiling. His pointed wing-shaped ears perked up, as if he was carefully listening for something. I held my breath and focused my attention. As I did so, I noticed that all the surrounding sounds became clearer and more distinct. Evidently, my auditory senses had also been enhanced after my body underwent mutations. Behind the cabin panel, there was no unusual commotion, only the beeping of instruments, the footsteps tapping on the floor, and the “gudong gudong” sound of water, as if living beings were breathing underwater and producing those sounds.

Agares stared up. “It’s time…”

“What time?”

I asked with confusion, but Agares pulled me to the side and raised his webbed paw, gradually approaching the upper hatch. The scales on the sides of his body trembled at a speed invisible to the naked eye, and a cluster of blue electric light gathered in his palm with a “sizzling” sound. Tiny electric threads darted between his five fingers, and even at a distance, I could still feel my hair being attracted by static electricity. The moment his palm touched the hatch, the entire ship trembled, and in an instant, the commotion above spread in all directions like an explosion. gIWweX

“What’s going on here?”

“Crap, these test subjects seem to have undergone some kind of mutation. We’re losing control fast, Dr. Bing Ye, we have to call for backup!”

Amidst the chaos, two sets of hurried footsteps passed quickly overhead. After the heavy sound of the cabin door closing, eerie and chilling strange screeches reverberated from above, accompanied by creaking and scraping noises as if multiple fish tails were swaying overhead and dispersing in all directions. The incessant sound of shattering glass filled the air, and a pungent odour of preservatives emanated as liquid seeped through the cracks above us.

“This will be a feast, Desharow.” Agares retracted his webbed claw, his lips curved into a chilling arc. yd2Zbm

My breath grew tight, and I felt that I was about to witness something unimaginable. Following Agares, we continued to make our way towards the drainage compartment, covering a significant distance. We reached the other end of the warship. Through narrow gaps, I saw the bow of the ship filled with Japanese soldiers. They raised their guns nervously, aiming at a certain spot above us. From the commotion coming from above, I knew that the mutated “test subjects” had likely escaped from the chambers.

At that moment, a loud gunshot echoed with a ‘bang’ from somewhere, and chaos erupted in an instant.

The sound of fish tails scraping against the ground swept overhead, and in an instant, dozens of dark figures descended like a storm, akin to a dark cloud unfurling amidst a tempest, attacking the soldiers who raised their guns to shoot!

I was left speechless as I discovered that it was a group of dissected and disembowelled young merfolk. Black fluid flowed from their empty abdominal cavities, their organs removed, and their torn flesh almost dragging on the ground, resembling a horde of vengeful corpses crawling out of the grave. The soldiers were horrified by this extremely gruesome sight, barely able to react before the young merfolk overwhelmed them, crazily biting and tearing at their bodies. The screams of agony and the sounds of limbs being ripped apart intertwined, resembling a boiling pot of water amidst the thunder and lightning. Q0ojm9

Several soldiers who had luckily not been attacked struggled to crawl towards the drainage compartment where we were located. However, they were frightened by the electric shock administered by Agares on the deck and scrambled back, falling back into the midst of the fierce battle with intoxicated young merfolk. In an instant, their body and head were torn apart and devoured, their bodies gruesomely reduced to a pile of mutilated flesh.

Some unfortunate individuals were torn apart by the young merfolks even before they had died completely. Their bellies were ripped open, and the steaming internal organs were greedily devoured, accompanied by a wave of bone-chilling screams of agony.

The scene was comparable to the bloody scene of a pride of lions relentlessly hunting down their prey on the African savannah. Shinichi must have never expected that they would face such a gruesome fate of self-devouring evil consequences. This probably was just the punishment that fits their crimes. I finally understood the meaning of “Fierce Battle” as spoken by Agares.

“Desharow…” Agares’ voice suddenly rang in my ears, causing me to startle and pull out from the horrifying trance I was in. BTOldL

I turned my head, and a bolt of lightning suddenly cut through the sky, casting a pale light on Agares’ face. I was taken aback by the cold, bloodthirsty smile on his face. I could tell that Agares was exhilarated by this merciless vengeful massacre, as the veins on his neck pulsed like springs, showing his excitement.

“Are you scared?” He lowered his head, leaning closer to my nose.

“A little.” I swallowed nervously, my nerves jumping up and down along with the screams echoing in my mind.

Immediately, he pulled me into his embrace. His rough, moist breath brushed against my face, and his low growl penetrated my eardrums, “Desharow, this is our law of survival. Whoever dares to harm us, and will face tenfold, a hundredfold retaliation. Even the sea itself will assist us.” c96lWw

It seemed like I could see Agares more clearly now, finally able to grasp what lay behind his swamp-like deep affection. Like many formidable and warlike kings among humans, Agares, as the leader of the merfolk, was bloodthirsty and violent by nature. He believed in using violence to counter violence, and perhaps this was the most direct way to put an end to all of this. The mastermind behind this conspiracy must truly regret provoking him. I wondered where Shinichi and Rhine were hiding now, while trembling in fear? And of course, there was my grandfather, or rather, it would be more appropriate to call him an elder of the merfolk…

Just as I was thinking this, a piercing screech suddenly erupted from a short distance away. The young merfolk, who were viciously attacking the soldiers, froze in an instant. Agares’ gaze darkened, and a cloud of gloom covered his face. A dreadful premonition immediately surged within me.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Come out… King, I sense that you are here… Are you still hiding inside, protecting your little human mate?”

The distant shout grew closer and closer until it echoed above us. Agares glanced at me deeply. It was clear that a duel was inevitable, but he was concerned about my safety. I held him tightly, burying my head in his neck, greedily inhaling his scent. “My chief is invincible.” rjQAeY

“Until everything is over, don’t come out, Desharow,” Agares stared into my eyes, his eyelids drooping. His lips pressed against my palm, obviously they were ice-cold yet I felt like I was being burned by a hot iron. The sound of him speaking my name echoed deep within my heart.

I nodded, and Agares immediately went out.

His long, black fish tail raised his body, and his pale, muscular form emitted a chilling glow in the darkness. He stood amidst the storm like a Greek hero statue, and he was my hero, a hero fighting for our destiny.

Accompanied by the sound of a fish tail sliding across the deck, I finally caught sight of Agares’ opponent — Levjet. He dragged behind him a beautiful silver fish tail, each scale reflecting a dazzling gleam under the lights. It confirmed that I was indeed his descendant, a product of his union with a human. He was undeniably my grandfather, even if Agares’ spores existed within me. This was an undeniable truth. a5nlDN

As if sensing my gaze, Levjet suddenly turned his head and locked eyes with me. We both froze at that moment. As Shinichi had mentioned, there was indeed a resemblance between his appearance and mine, especially our eyes, black as obsidian. He looked at me with confusion, then glanced at Agares. Obviously, my appearance made him very puzzled for a while.

Without giving him any more time to observe me, Agares flicked his fish tail, it turned into a black lightning bolt as he swept towards Levjet. Levjet barely managed to dodge Agares’ attack by twisting his body, but he retaliated by raising his tail fin and striking at Agares head-on. However, Agares firmly grasped the thinnest part of his tail with his webbed claw. They wrestled with each other like two fierce gladiators, their strengths evenly matched for the moment. I nervously stared at this heart-stopping battle, my heart nearly exploding within my chest.

However, my worries proved to be unnecessary. Agares’ power was clearly much greater than Levjet’s. He held onto the end of Levjet’s tail tightly, and with a surge of electricity built up in his hand, he struck Levjet’s chest forcefully. After a spasm, Levjet was ruthlessly thrown onto the deck by Agares, emitting a deafening thud upon impact. Agares gripped his neck, his tail fin looming high above his head, causing an involuntary tremor in my breath. Despite knowing that my grandfather was a treacherous conspirator, I still couldn’t face the sight of Agares killing him directly. However, to my surprise, Agares didn’t strike him immediately. Instead, he used his sharp tail fin to slice off one of Levjet’s side fins, just like the act of taking the enemy’s arm as a spoil of war during the ancient times.

Levjet trembled in pain but continued to stare at Agares, laughing heartily. “Why don’t you kill me? You know well that our brood is still alive, and I cannot die like this. Aren’t you afraid that I pose a threat to your position?” He then turned his head to look at me, his eyes gleaming with intrigue. “Is it true what that experimental subject claiming to be from the future said? Is he really the future descendant of me and humans? It’s unbelievable. King, do you dare not kill me because you fear that if I die, he will also disappear as well?” zht70

“What I said is true.”

A voice that was familiar like a nightmare suddenly sounded beside me.

“Desharow!” Agares roared and immediately rushed towards me, but Levjet jumped up and dragged him into the sea.

The next moment, before I could even react, my body was being dragged out by a webbed claw. When I saw the figure before me, I was stunned, unable to believe my eyes. The unexpected visitor holding onto me was Rhine, with a horrifying vertical surgical scar running across his chest and abdomen. And astonishingly, his lower half no longer had human legs but a deep blue fish tail. 43vxLb

“I am the only surviving test subject,” he lowered his head, staring at me with a twisted expression. His eyes flickered with an almost maniacal gleam. “Do you like this new body of mine, Desharow?”

I was stunned and speechless, as the situation unfolding before my eyes exceeded my comprehension and acceptance. I desperately kicked and struggled against Rhine’s grip on my ankle, trying to retreat into the drainage compartment. However, with a powerful force, my legs were pulled outward, dragging me several metres. My head forcefully collided with the bulkhead, and the intense pain caused dizziness and almost made me faint on the spot. I struggled to prop myself up, but stumbled and fell into a pool of blood and dismembered flesh. A pair of webbed claws pressed against my back, and a nauseating stench of disinfectant filled the air as his body pinned me down heavily.

“I’m going to possess you with this new body, Desharow.” Rhine sneered in my ear, and I felt his tight grip on my thigh, his sharp nails digging into my skin. Pain and fear seemed to awaken a long-lost power within me. I sensed my legs being swiftly protected by hardened fish scales, and my body suddenly filled with strength. With a roar, I forcefully thrust my elbow into Rhine’s abdomen.

This time, my blow landed directly on his surgical scar, causing him to curl up in pain. Seizing the opportunity, I crawled out from under him, but only to be stopped by his arm again. I struggled to hold back Rhine’s attempt to overpower me, and saw that my legs were indeed rapidly fusing together. Silver fish scales grew out from beneath my skin, and Rhine’s gaze shifted to my lower half. However, to my utter disbelief, he suddenly extended his newly-formed webbed claw similar to a dagger and forcefully stabbed it into the seam between my merging legs, forcefully separating them from the growing fish scales. ZrKUqW

In an indescribable moment, an excruciating pain surged through my entire body like a lightning bolt. I couldn’t control myself and let out a gut-wrenching scream. Subconsciously, I curled up and rolled on the ground, feeling as if my entire body had been torn in half. The immense agony caused my consciousness to blur momentarily, and all I could see was Rhine’s figure approaching me. However, at that moment, a dark figure suddenly pounced from above, accompanied by the sound of bones snapping. Rhine was thrown several metres away, crashing onto the deck.

With great effort, I forced my heavy eyelids open and saw Agares gripping Rhine’s neck with a fierce expression. The blood-red tail fin at the end of his tail cleanly severed Rhine’s throat. The madman who had been relentlessly haunting me until the end finally met his death without even leaving a final word.

“Desharow…”

As I was on the verge of losing consciousness, I heard Agares’ trembling, deep voice calling out to me. He carefully cradled my body in his arms, burying his head in the crook of my neck, deeply inhaling my scent. I could faintly sense Agares’ powerful frame twitching, and cold liquid trickled down my cheek—a tear shed by the indomitable, fierce leader of the merfolk, my beloved. He was crying for me. KZMDIU

To be honest, I really wanted to see what Agares looked like as he shed tears for me, but I couldn’t summon the strength to open my eyes. I didn’t know the extent of my injuries, and I couldn’t think clearly. My body was in so much pain as I felt my life slowly slipping away, seeping out of my body bit by bit.

Just as I felt myself fully sinking into the depths of darkness, a deafening explosion resonated all around me. In an instant, my body became incredibly light, as if floating like a feather into the air. Yet, Agares held me tightly, his embrace unwavering, until all sensation faded away. Silence engulfed everything.

What will happen next with the rise of the fish ball… HJIAk2

The author has something to say:

(Tn: It is kinda a spoiler for the next chapters)

Um… In the next chapter, the story will enter the final stage of upheaval and turbulence. Um… It is related to something from the past that was supposed to happen but didn’t, as mentioned by Yu Dazhuang. It can be summarised in one sentence: the rise of the fish ball! >_> By the way… you will be surprised by what’s coming next.
