Chapter 79
Recalling the dreadful experience that felt like being trapped inside of a ghost realm just earlier, I became on edge. Swallowing, I lifted my head, “Then, how should I avoid and handle the creatures that have been contaminated?”
“Let them clearly know that you belong to me. The contaminated ones are still afraid of me because of the pheromones composed in my scent.” Agares said with an ambiguous glimmer in his eyes before it faded into its usual solemn gloom, “You originally could’ve been protected if you linked with me regularly, but I got infected as well.”
I touched the already healed wound on his body, staring at the spots that shrunk into the size of needles under his skin. “But maybe… This doesn’t affect the magnitude of your intimidation. What if, and this is just saying what if… Your contamination has the same effect? Just like an infectious vaccine in our medical field—although you could hurt me—perhaps your contamination can also keep other contaminated ones away from me. In any case, if this continues, I may be lucky enough to not get contaminated.”
Perhaps, my remark and conjecture of it was too absurd for Agares, for he came forward and pressed his lips against mine to stop me from talking. After he’d been freed, he pulled me onto the bed, enveloping me under his body with his arms from behind. My clothes were stripped off in a matter of seconds by his webbed hand, and even my underwear wasn’t spared. I had no idea what Agares was planning, but this sort of administration was like the preparation for what he had done to me before. I couldn’t help but breathe tensely, my heart speeding up. I wanted to turn and see, but my head was held firmly in his claws, making me lie down flat on my stomach and unable to move.
“Hey, hey, what are you doing?” I swallowed dryly.
“Don’t move.” Agares pressed his jaw hard against the back of my head, voice blunt. “This is to let my scent linger. Hold back your reactions, Desharow. If not, I’ll be unable to suppress the dark matter’s agitation. Close your eyes and don’t tempt.”
“…How hateful.” I muttered and buried my face into the pillow, allowing his tongue to fall on my neck, running his saliva to wet my back. He trailed down to my spine and lingered on my skin at each side. Like a lion cleaning the body of its cub, my entire back felt warm. This made me feel like I was lying down on a beach sunbathing, and Agares was using a moist sponge to spread on my sunscreen oil; it felt so comfortable to the point of making one go soft and limp. Suddenly, images of the scenes that occurred on the safety boat that appeared in my dream from before floated to mind. I couldn’t help but instinctively grasp his hair which cascaded atop my hand, trying to suppress the quickening breathing from my nose.
“Hey, is that true… Agares?” My voice was muffled from the pillow. I didn’t even know if he could hear me. “During our first time, I was only 15! And you still went ahead and…”
Agares’s webbed hands tightened on my waist, and he gave out a low hum as a response. His tongue stopped just short of my tailbone, lingering for a second more before quickly removing it. With a short distance away, I could still feel his rough and heavy breathing hitting my back and his tail un-resistantly squeezing my legs tightly. I just laid there quiet and motionless. I felt uneasy from his hair draping along my skin, not even daring to take a look at him because me being stark naked right now was like a bloody piece of bait placed right in front of a shark’s eye; even the smallest movement could ignite his fuse that makes him lose all his reasoning.
He was already hard, and the big thing hung down like a ripe banana, pressing onto my ass. Carefully, I questioned, “So, this would allow your scent linger on my body? How long can it last?”

Agares’s face became tense, not answering me. Instead, he just used his webbed hands to scratch his plaything and his rough, long fishtail swayed restlessly for a few moments. A laugh nearly broke out of me from his mannerisms, and, in retaliation, he pinched my little brother. The sensitivity from it made me shiver. After that, I saw him grin widely like a little kid. I rolled my eyes, noticing for the first time how the chief of Merfolks had such a childish side to him—trying to scoop eggs with each other? But then again, how could his thing be so much bigger than mine, damn it!
Just as we were both taking pleasure playing this sort of vulgar game, static noises blared from the page by our side. I hastily grabbed a hold of it and turned up the volume. The noise from the speaker was chaotic as I heard the sounds of my comrades mixed within it. Immediately, I shot forward nervously, and in that second, I suddenly heard a hair-raising laugher ringing in the background!
Dread filled within me. This was the same voice of the monster that attacked me!
I just knew that there was going to be trouble when they boarded that abandoned ship. Pushing Agares aside, I jumped off the bed. However, beside me, he suddenly started to twitch all over, and his complexion suddenly turned extremely unsightly.
Those black dots started to move and accumulate once again from under his skin, and his eyes gradually got swallowed up by the darkness. Even this ship had a stroke of misfortune and started to shake. I staggered and leaned against the wall, fumbling around with the shackles on the ground and thinking of rechaining him. Then, I saw that he had flipped his body over with his tail bending into an arc before grabbing onto the cabin’s door handle. Leaping sharply, he became a dark shadow flying across the deck. He threw a last second low growl, “Don’t follow, Desharow!”
“Agares!” I shouted loudly, not caring about what he said and chased after him immediately. Yet he was gone without a trace in a blink of an eye, leaving a long trail in the ocean. I shook off the chains, annoyed, but I didn’t dare to stay outside for long. I rushed back into the cabin and quickly went through all my things and armed myself up with all the gear I could use. Following the plan that we and Nick discussed, I ran to the bow of the ship and sent out a signal flare. Then used a wireless radio to signal the other for rescue. Their sailing speed was half an hour slower than our small salvage ship, but their distance should be close. Although by doing this, it would be impossible to avoid a meeting with Rhine, Shinichi, and the others. But right now, they weren’t regarded as a big threat.
Soon, I got a reply. A high beam projected over the ocean from a distance of about a mile away.
My mind relaxed a little, and I quickly tried calling out the names of my comrades through the pager, however, in the moment I was chasing after Agares before, all the sounds from the pager had already disappeared. I felt so uneasy that I wanted to go to that abandoned ship and take a look myself, but the shaking body of our ship admonished me that I shouldn’t act blindly without thinking. Furthermore, I had only myself, and in my previous experiences, going out alone wasn’t the best idea.
Forcing myself to control my impulsiveness, I sat in the captain’s position and picked up a pair of binoculars to watch the situation of the abandoned ship on the other side; while doing so, my heart was jumping anxiously, nearly breaking through my ribcage.
Through the lenses, I was shocked to find that the black attachments on the ship were hair-like vegetations. This made me suddenly think of Agares taking out the contaminated ‘yoila’ from my body. I got off the chair with a woosh, and my mind exploded. The whole abondoned ship was covered in virus-like, mutated mermolk spores. This was a trap. The contaminated merfolks wanted those things to parasitize the humans who boarded the abandoned ship.
I’m afraid they had already been attacked. I should have stopped my comrades, even if it means force. Fuck!
Feeling like sitting on pins and needles , my eyes inadvertently fell on a bunch of unused flare sticks in the box and an idea struck me.
That’s right. I wasn’t sure if those damned things were still afraid of light, but at the very least this could incite a deterrent effect on them. At least, it wasn’t as bad as letting them just sit around and wait for death.
I immediately took the flare sticks and quickly divided them into several bunches, before throwing them out the window towards the hull of the ship in the opposite direction. Almost immediately, a hissing sound akin to a viper’s hiss resonated from within the dark ocean. Those hair-like mermaid spores started to squirm in an instant. The scene was now extremely disturbing. All at once, I knew that light indeed had provoked them. I continued to throw more light flares out.
On the other ship, a bundle of flares spat out a dazzling, cold light in every corner of the hull, like fireworks. The entire ship started to churn up and down with the waves like seeing boiling water. Right then, countless of black threads tangled together everywhere and a few human figures were suddenly flung outward outward and thrown into the ocean water. In an instant, I could hear Rodia’s voice along with the others calling for help!
“Hold on. Hang in there!! I’m coming to save you guys!” Upon seeing this, I hurriedly climbed down to the bottom cabin and went to find some life buoys and ropes. After, I charged toward the edge of the ship at the fastest speed I have ever traveled in my life and threw them at the few people in the water below.
Unfortunately, it just had to be at the most urgent moment when the hull of the ship started shaking more violently, tilting to a point where it was in danger of capsizing. I had to give up on the rescue mission temporarily and grabbed onto the mast tightly to avoid being thrown into the sea myself. The few people that I watched helplessly being thrown into water before had already disappeared without a trace right before my eyes.
There was no wind nor waves in the ocean, instead there were large and small whirlpools that started to form and jellyfishes starting to float upwards in numerous amounts, looking like a group of white ghosts. Yet what made my blood run cold wasn’t this scene, but rather, the things that were starting to resurface slowly from under the layer of jellyfishes—
It was a bunch of slender and distorted figures of rotting, black merfolk trying to climb up the ship with squid-like tentacles that were drilling out from their chest. One of them especially had already climbed up and attached itself to the hull’s outer wall below me. It opened its mouth, aiming at me, and from inside its jet-black hole of a throat, lumps of hair-like spores rushed forth.
“Shit!”
My scalp felt numb as I gave a loud shout and reflexively pulled out the gun by my waist to let the thing eat some bullets. With a bang, those tendrils of jet-black hair burst and fell apart into loose strands, and towards those merfolks’ spores that unresignly stuck to the boat’s wall climbing up, I crushed them ruthlessly. A lingering sense of nausea rose within my heart, because under this circumstance, it was like I was an egg surrounded by sperms.However, the result of the attack wasn’t becoming pregnant like a woman but to become a monster just like them.
Would Agares’s scent really work?
Looking at the unending amount of demons in the ocean that were climbing up the body of the ship, they looked like they were closing in. Plus, the shaking of the ship put me in danger of falling into the ocean. An immense fear urged me to leap towards the deck, and there, I clung firmly onto a pillar as I crawled my way back towards the cockpit. Closing the door tightly, I looked through a window that gave me the best view of the entire ship and spotted Rhine’s ship already reaching the Posiedon’s right side, around a few hundred metres away, and I pondered whether I could use the grappling hook launcher to slide over.
It was at this point when I sensed an unusual movement coming from all sides. I vigilantly looked outside and saw that the black shadows had already climbed up onto the deck and was heading towards the captain’s room. Wherever I looked, the hair-like merfolk spores resembling a plague had unfurled outwards. It seemed as though I was about to be trapped to death. Perhaps, it was true to say that people were most courageous and daring when stuck in a desperate situation, because I had promptly lifted up a bucket of engine oil that was used to lubricate the hull and stuck a foot out of the cabin. Sprinkling oil as I rushed out, I stumbled the whole way towards the starboard nearest to the ship, but not long before turning around to give those damned things chasing me a good taste of my gun.
“Hey guys, have you fucking played enough yet?!”
As soon as I was done cursing fiercely, there was a booming sound, and then a blazing inferno shot up into the sky. The shadows kicked up a struggle from the fire and terrifying shrieks tore through the night, making me shudder. I wiped away the sweat dripping down my forehead and took out the grappling hook, turning my body around. But as soon as I did, I trembled all over and my body suddenly became unable to move.
From the tall shadow that enveloped me, a pair of swamp-like eyes narrowly were found staring at me. Its slimy and fishy tongue slowly swept over my lips, and beneath the thick, black hair, revealed the pale face that I was extremely familiar with, however now, it was filled with nothing but blood thirst and coldness. Those sharp, powerful webbed claws grabbed the front of my clothing, lifting my body into the air with ease, and his fingernails seemed like they wanted to cut open my stomach as they skimmed past the seam of my shirt. I heard the sound of my thick, leather windbreaker being ripped apart and then my lower half was suddenly attacked by him again.
“Aga…res…” My voice sounded like it was trapped in my throat, and my breathing trembled uncontrollably. Hurriedly, I touched the gun by my waist. My fingers felt like they were frozened on the ice-cold gun, and, even though I had my grip on it, I had no strength at all to pull it out. I clenched my jaw, staring wide-eyed into his own, once again trying to find a fluctuation from the stagnant dead water. I really didn’t believe that this ‘dark’ Agares could possibly forget everything, and that he could completely hurt me, assault me or tortue me to death without feeling any remorse.
There seemed to be a small reaction from him, however, in ridiculousness, I saw him withdraw his hands out of my body and taste the fingers that were dripping with fresh blood. Then he grinned widely before giving a sinisterly avaricious laugh and stabbed his hand back in more deeply than ever.
Dare I say that this right now most likely has injured my scrotum. I let out a cry of pain and curled up, trembling. I could feel blood pooling in my pants, trickling down my thigh. There were a few sharp hissing sounds flitting by my ears, and a vast amount of contaminated young spores crawled up the ship once again. They slowly crawled towards me but were swept into the fire at lightning speed by Agares tail. He let out a fierce hissing in warning at them, his black pupils reflected the raging flames, like Satan emerging from the underworld.
Maybe I should be thankful that even though Agares had become like this, he still wished to keep me as his own possession. In spite of that, the severe pain and the fear of becoming a handicapped person nearly broke my mind, and I struggled away from him in a frenzy. With the help of the grappling hook launcher, I glided onto the deck of the other ship that was opposite of this perilous place.
“What’s going on here?”
“Heavens, who’s this?”
“……”
I saw the approaching crowd staring at me in horror and their noises in my head became static buzzing. With the world spinning around me, I quickly covered my lower body that was wet with blood and staggered a few more steps. However, soon my legs softened, making me fall to the ground.
