It was late at night, when Luca was finally done with his work. Ren was sitting across from him, on an extra chair that one of the staff members got for him, on Luca’s request. He had calmed down, and was now reading one of Luca’s books he kept in his drawer. Luca desperately hoped Ren would forget about seeing him read that book with a really strange title. Must keep his image clean!
As for the strange man, Wyatt and Lilly had joined hands to drive him away. Wyatt updated Luca on the situation. The man had refused to leave at first, but Wyatt had secretly used his magic to trick the man into thinking that Ren’s scent was elsewhere. Lilly had made sure to put the man on the blacklist, and to have removed from the premises if he ever came back. Luca made sure to note that he should give this receptionist a bonus for her troubles.
Luca stored all the papers in his drawer. Seeing Luca was done, Ren also bookmarked the page he was on, and put it away. He was avoiding Luca’s gaze, still embarrassed from being hugged. If Luca noticed, he didn’t show it, and acted like usual. Ren wondered how Luca could stay so calm. Ren didn’t suspect that Luca wasn’t always calm, he was just better at hiding his emotions from experience.
“Let’s go.” Luca said. Ren followed.
They both walked down and took the elevator. It was already late, and almost everyone had left the company, save for a few of the security staff, and overtimers, who worked on a different floor.
Since it was nighttime now, Luca didn’t need his cane or glasses, but he still wore them to avoid suspicion in case he actually ran into someone. He didn’t want to accidentally expose his identity.
They reached the parking lot. Luca helped Ren into his car, and drove towards home. They already ordered dinner and ate it in the office, so neither were feeling hungry at the moment.

The signal turned green and the car started moving again. However, Luca had a feeling he was being watched. It could just be a feeling, but Luca had learned to never doubt his instincts, no matter what logic told him. He turned around, but couldn’t make out which car was following him.
Keeping his eyes on the rearview mirror, he decided to turn his car around, and saw one of the cars he saw previously still behind him. Just to make sure he really was being followed, he took three left turns, only to see the same car still behind him. There was no doubt about it now.
While Luca was distracted, the traffic light signal he was at turned red. Luca inwardly cursed and slammed the brakes. Ren jostled awake from the impact.
“What’s happening?” He said, his voice still drowsy.
“We’re being tailed.”
Hearing that Ren turned around, to see who it was. He immediately recognized the car which Luca was talking about. It was a sleek black car, the same one the man from before him was trying to pull him into.
“They know I’m with you.” Ren said.
Luca hummed. “Indeed. They’re quite persistent. Just what did you do to make the McAllisters come and chase after you?”
“How did you know it was them?” Ren asked, shocked.
“It’s not hard to figure out. Their crest is displayed on the car, in a way that it’s hard not to notice. You have a really powerful enemy.”
Ren took another look at the car, and saw the prominent symbol displayed. Of course they wouldn’t miss a chance to announce their presence. They were very influential among the other vampires, and basically ruled over them.
“So now you know it’s them, are you . . . Will you send me back to them?”
For the first time, Luca glared at Ren. Ren felt this time he truly offended the vampire.
“Don’t look down on me, I don’t break my promises.” Luca stated. A tense silence filled the car, until Luca broke it once again.
“Besides,” he said, grinning. “I hate them too, so stealing you away makes me very happy.”
Ren didn’t relax. “They’ll come after you too.”
“So? Let them try. I’m not weak, and it’s not my first time going against them.” Luca said confidently.
“Why are you protecting me?” Ren asked, finally asking the question that was plaguing him from the beginning.
“Because,” Luca said. “From the moment I rescued you, I decided that you’re my responsibility.”
The light turned green, a complete contrast from Ren’s face, which was completely red. The car moved, and of course the car stalking them followed them close behind. Despite being followed, Ren felt completely calm. Whether he admitted it or not, he was starting to feel safe around Luca. Even though the vampire’s motives were unclear, he was the only one that ever protected Ren.
