I forget which Nation but one Native American tribe had a good solution to smallpox that I think would fit here. When someone was infected or showed symptoms of smallpox, they dug a deep hole and lowered the person down. Then, family/friends would toss down food, water, blankets, etc as needed and talk to the patient from the top. If the patient survived, great! They lowered a rope and pulled them back up.
