Yuichiro Ogami had an unusual dream. In his dream, he was transported to another world and given the name “Goddess. In the country of Jeweld, where a civil war has broken out, the goddess must lead the army while also giving birth to the king’s children.
He ran through a world never seen before with his excellent subordinates, capturing traitors, and liberating the royal capital, which was surrounded by rebels. Two men embraced him in his dream. Noah, the “rightful king,” and Temeraire, a lovely young man who was a “servant and devotee” of the goddess.
Yuichiro almost snickered at the content of the dream, which was so absurd that it could have been straight out of a three-cent dime novel. It was never a pleasant dream. It felt more like a nightmare. He could not get out of this nightmare no matter how many times he fell asleep. Yuichiro was dreamily considering how to wake up when he heard someone is voice echo directly into his brain.

Before he knew it, a brown-skinned man was standing there, blending into the darkness. The man was wearing a camouflage-patterned army uniform and was staring at Yuichiro with a carefree smile. Since Yuichiro’s mind was foggy for a moment, he was unable to remember the man’s name. Seconds later, Yuichiro finally opened his lips.
“Oswald.”
Oz smiled, revealing his white teeth when Yuichiro called out. The man was the idiot who had covered himself with a grenade to protect Yuichiro during the battle in the jungle just before Yuichiro was transferred to another world. Despite the fact that he had long since died, Oz continued to haunt Yuichiro’s dreams.
When Yuichiro called his name, Oz shrugged his shoulders slightly and approached him with light footsteps.
“What are you going to do when you wake up from your dream? Are you going to return to that jungle as a mercenary and kill people? Even if no one is waiting for you when you return to this world?”
Oz’s scathing words made Yuichiro’s bridge of the nose scrunch. The man’s words appeared to mock him, as Yuichiro struggled to return to his original world, unable to forget his wife and daughter.
“Shut up, does a dead man give sermons!?”
Oz shrugged his shoulders in annoyance as Yuichiro sarcastically retorted. Oz moved his face closer to Yuichiro as he continued to stare at him. The white part of Oz’s eyes, which shone brightly, were so close that the tips of their noses almost touched.
“Hey, does money tastes that good?”
“What?”
“Is gold that beautiful?”
Oz had asked him the same question before. Was this man, ironically, asking him who was willing to fight in a war in another world in exchange for money? While Yuichiro was perplexed by this, Oz tilted his head gently and laughed. Oz looked at him with the same benevolent expression Yuichiro had seen before. Oz moved his lips softly.
“Nothing happens by accident; rather, everything has its own designated time under the heavens.”
“Huh?”
“All things work together for the good of those who love God and are called by Him.”
Yuichiro stiffened when he saw Oz reading the Bible like a broken robot.
“What are you on about?”
“Unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, should die, it abides alone; but if it should die, it bears much fruit.”

Yuichiro shook his head from side to side, and then both of his arms were tightly grasped. Oz’s hands, which lacked body heat, tightened around his wrists. Yuichiro’s spine tingled as he felt the icy cold, yet muddy, sticky palms of his hands. Oz looked at him without blinking.
He said, “Then who do you pray to?”
“I don’t pray to anyone.”
Oz’s eyes narrowed in delight as Yuichiro bitingly responded.
“Then who do you fight for?”
The question that followed rendered Yuichiro speechless for a brief moment. Oz’s lips came to his ear as he stood there with his lips half open. His cold breaths blew into his ear with a whoosh.
“Wake up, Yuichiro.”
At the same time Oz said this, Yuichiro was awakened by the sound of a knock on the door. In the darkness, he opened his eyes and looked toward the door. The door was knocked twice more with a thump, thump.
“Captain Ogami!”
He could not get his head out of the dream he was dreaming of earlier, so it took him a while to realize it was the voice of Goat, his second-in-command. He looked around after repeatedly blinking his eyes. It was not a dense jungle, but rather a luxurious and spotless room with a canopy bed. He could see seven-colored galaxies shelving in the indigo sky as he looked out the latticed window at the sky.
[Am I still seeing the continuation of my dream? Or is this reality?] For a moment he couldn’t distinguish between the two, and his thoughts came to a halt.
Once again, there was a discreet knock on the door. Perhaps in response to the sound, the bulge next to him on the bed wriggled.
“…Yuichiro, what’s wrong?”
Noah slid out from under the covers, sleepily rubbing his eyes. Noah was the boy of the “rightful king” chosen by God, who at first rejected Yuichiro, calling him a god of death, but now claimed him to be his wife. He had shiny white hair that looked like silver and was lightly tousled in his sleep.
Noah wrapped his arms around Yuichiro’s waist like a koala around a tree. The feeling of warm arms around his waist made him realize that reality had finally returned.
“Nothing.”
“Someone’s calling? I’m coming too…” Noah’s voice muffled with his eyes half-closed.
“Just go back to sleep.” Yuichiro patted Noah’s head. Despite his rough touch, Noah’s mouth relaxed s happily, then he closed his eyes again and continued sleeping. Yuichiro stood up after gently removing Noah’s arms and confirming that he had fallen asleep.
He opened the door to find Goat standing there in light clothing. Goat had most likely just awoken, given that he was not in military uniform. Nonetheless, Yuichiro was unsure whether his adjutant was actually sleepy or not, because the man always appeared sleepy due to his drooping eyes.
“Sorry for bothering you before dawn. But were you having fun?”
“I’m going to kill you, you son of a bitch.” When Yuichiro responded to the lighthearted remark with a deliberately grumpy tone, Goat lightly shook his shoulders and laughed in an unnaturally sullen tone. Furthermore, his smile was stiffer than usual.
Yuichiro saw this and closed the door behind him without saying anything. Goat said, “This way,” and began to walk away at the same time. Yuichiro, who was walking diagonally behind him, asked simply, “What happened?”
“Evelise has just returned.”
Yuichiro’s brow twitched in response to these words. On suspicion of treachery, a scouting party had been sent to Am Yisu, where the people of the Yellow tribe were said to live. Because the Yellow tribe was entirely female and believed in goddesses, the scouting party included Temeraire, his own dedicated servant, Evelise, the only woman among their direct subordinates, and two more female soldiers from the regular army. However, Goat was now claiming that only Evelise had returned.
“What happened to Temeraire and the two soldiers?”
“They did not return.”
“What do you mean, were they killed?” As Yuichiro asked this, he felt chills inside his skin. He then turned his back around to hide his shivering fingertips. Later on, Goat opened the door in front of him and answered quickly, “We’ll talk more about it when we get inside. Go ahead.”
The door swung open to reveal what appeared to be an infirmary. A white curtain hung in the room, and behind it was a bed. Evelise was lying face down on the bed, surrounded by Luca and two medics who were treating her.
Yuichiro felt the backs of his eyelids turn crimson at the sight of Evelise. A single arrow remained lodged in Evelise’s slender back. A river of blood ran down Evelise’s naked white back, splitting into several streams.
“Clench your teeth.”
At the same time Luca whispered this, Evelise bit down hard on the wooden stick in her mouth. Simultaneously, the two medics also seized Evelise’s hands and feet. The moment Luca’s hand gripped the base of the arrow, Evelise’s throat curled backward. A stifled, fabric-cutting scream filled the room.
With a squelching sound, the arrowhead was finally pulled out of Evelise’s back. Evelise’s strength was suddenly drained from her body as soon as the arrowhead was removed from her body. Her face had turned completely white, and a torrent of greasy sweat poured out of it.
“It’s an Am Yisu’s arrow.” Goat muttered disgustedly as he examined the arrow feathers, which were a pale greenish color. In other words, Evelise was shot by the people of Am Yisu.
A wooden stick fell from Evelise’s mouth and rolled to Yuichiro’s feet. Evelise’s hollow eyes, which had been following the stick, spotted Yuichiro.
“Goddess-sama.” Instead of Captain Ogami, Evelise called him a goddess.
“I apologize for the delay in my return.”
“Don’t talk, Evelise.”
“No, no, no, I have something to tell you.”
“Wait until you’re healed.”
“I’ll endure till the very end. I beg you, please, while I’m still conscious.” Tears welled up in her eyes. Yuichiro tightened his lips in a hard knot and nodded quickly with a deep crease between his brows in response to her pleading gaze.
“Report to me, Evelise.”
“Yes, sir. Temeraire-sama and the other two soldiers have been captured by Am Yisu. Am Yisu is ‘currently’ betraying Jeweld,” Evelise continued speaking, gritting her teeth. She swallowed hard now and then, doing her best to keep her voice from shaking. Nonetheless, the unusual nature of her report caused him to frown.
“What do you mean by ‘currently’?”
Evelise took another deep breath in response to Yuichiro’s question.
“Once we arrived in Am Yisu and confirmed that there were no enemies nearby, we referred to ourselves as messengers of the Goddess and requested a meeting with the chief who governs Am Yisu. However, the person who appeared in front of us was not Am Yisu’s chief, but a girl.”
Yuichiro’s heart jumped slightly after hearing the word ‘girl’. Afterward, he suddenly recalled the words he had heard from the mouths of other people.
“That girl even told us this. That she’s the real goddess.”
[Ah] Yuichiro unconsciously almost leaked his voice.
Fake goddess
At the sudden revelations, Yuichiro had finally understood why the traitor, Lieutenant General Gadelman, Lord Weldham and the 2nd Prince Rondo had persistently called him this. It turned out that they had long found their own goddess.
Goat then muttered in a bitter voice. “What color is her hair?”
“…Black, sir.”
In response to Evelise’s reply, Goat clucked his tongue in a frustrated manner. He then ruffled his hair with one hand.
“This situation is bad. Am Yisu will completely obey that goddess. Even if she’s a fake.”
“’I doubt it. I don’t know. Maybe she’s the real one.”
It was natural to believe so. A female goddess was far more convincing than a male goddess. Perhaps it was a mistake for him to have flown into this world. Yuichiro’s wrist was unexpectedly grabbed by Evelise’s bloody arm as he pondered this in a daze. Yuichiro’s pupils dilated as he felt the slick blood.
“You are the goddess,” Evelise murmured, her eyes welling up with tears. He was perplexed by Evelise’s conviction. Evelise repeated while staring at him, “Our goddess is only you.”
“How do you know that?”
[Why do you believe in this delusion? How could you call a thirty-seven-year-old middle-aged man who came out of nowhere a goddess?] Yuichiro raised his eyebrows, in confusion.
Evelise relaxed her mouth and whispered quietly, “Because, you are beautiful.”
You are beautiful.
Yuichiro widened his eyes at Evelise. Her eyes were downcast as if she were embarrassed by her remark. The long lashes framing her eyelids shivered faintly.
“Am Yisu has been deceived. If this continues, the girl who claims to be a goddess will manipulate them and make them fight until Am Yisu is destroyed. Please, Goddess, save our people….”
Yuichiro was unable to respond to Evelise’s prayerful voice. He could not believe he was a goddess, no matter how many words were said to him. The only thing he could do was play the goddess for his obedient subordinates. To convey his intentions without using words, he wrapped his other palm around Evelise’s hand that was holding his arm. Evelise’s eyes widened briefly, followed by a sigh of relief. Her moist eyes gently closed after that.
“Rest easy,” Yuichiro quietly whispered. Later, he returned Evelise’s unconscious hand to the bed, telling Luca, “Whatever happens, don’t let her die.”
“Of course,” Lucas replied succinctly.
