The Villainous Mage King Has No ShameCh22 - are you familiar with rope

They didn’t stay in Gotsven for long. AmGc3w

News reached Julian about hunters that stalked the city perimeters. They were already essentially surrounded. There were reported sightings of hunting dogs, dark-clad figures, and a woman donned in inquisitor blue, with a black spear worn on her back.

When Leonel heard word, he’d been eager to leave at once, nagging the tired doctor to rouse from his sleep. The stray girl had taken the hammock while Leonel had nagged the doctor to rest in the cot. No one was certain if the black hair inquisitor had rested that night, but of the trio, he seemed the most energetic.

“Cease your nagging!” Julian groaned tiredly, opening his eyes, only to close them after being assaulted by daylight. Still too damned early in his books. “You’re even worse than my old lady.”

“Julian,” Leonel said pointedly, concern and urgency dripping in his voice. The doctor could feel a shadow looming over him and… fU7JP

Wait a moment. Was that the first time Leonel said his name? Intrigued, Julian opened his eyes once more, his vision now serviced with a massive blob of shadow that obscured the light coming in from the window.

Julian sorely wished to see the kind of expression this hooligan was making, but alas, he only had his imagination to supply the furrowed brows and the pursed lips. He couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought. “What has you calling my name so intimately, Leonel?”

Julian couldn’t see the inquisitor cringe, but he was barely able to make out the sound of him clicking his tongue. “Get up if you want to live. We need to get out of Gotsven at once. I’ve news.”

Julian merely sighed, his body still aching from yesterday’s excursions. In hindsight, they really hadn’t done much but his body was already so worn. He barely had the energy to even sit up. “What news? I hear no barking, no hooves or encroaching voices. It sounds like we’re fine, son. If things weren’t then…” Then Katie would let him know, especially when she was still in town. The quiet had him unalarmed. After all, it was as if Julian wasn’t without a plan.

“I spoke with the villagers this morning.” Leonel stomped around the house. Julian really couldn’t imagine what the man was doing stomping around in his poor living space, but at least he wouldn’t have to bear witness to it. Julian could hear a small tired groan and some shuffling. There was a high-pitched voice that reminded the doctor of the teenager, but her voice was too distant to properly make out what she was saying.

“Get up,” Leonel repeated with a sharp snap. He crossed the breadth of the house in just a few strides, towering over Julian with his absurd height. Julian kept his eyes closed, pretending to be ignorant of the giant looming over him. He sputtered when he felt something being thrown over him. VaPNYW

With a faint scowl, Julian reached up, feeling the fabric that was thrown on top of his body. Slowly, he pulled himself up and squinted at it, trying to make out what manner of item it was supposed to be. Leonel seemed satisfied with the doctor’s progress out of bed, perhaps assuming that Julian would actually put the coat on rather than just stare at it like an imbecile. The inquisitor went about his way once more, busying with things that Julian couldn’t begin to fathom.

“Here,” a gentle, girlish voice called to Julian’s attention. The doctor looked to his side, squinted at the mass that knelt next to the cot. Though he knew it was Illysa, he couldn’t quite tell what she wished to call his attention to.

Still, the doctor smiled. “Ah, good morning there lassie. It’s nice to see that you’ve lasted through the night. I’m honestly surprised that our good inquisitor kept us both alive for so long.”

He heard a gentle hum from her before soft fingers tugged at his wrinkled hands. “It’s not morning anymore, Doctor.” His eyeglasses were carefully placed in his palms and Julian found himself rather pleased. mXTjlB

“Ah!” He adjusted the glasses on the bridge of his nose. Vague blurs sharpened and finally, he could see Illysa blinking at him with those wide, golden eyes, still glowing with embers of her power. It seemed that she couldn’t quite control her appearance yet, unable to hide the fact that she was an innate mage.

“Thank you, sweet girl! It’s so nice to have at least one child with a good head on their shoulders.” He patted her shoulder with great vigor while Illysa tilted her head. It took her a moment to realize what Julian was referring to— after all, she couldn’t quite fathom someone like Leonel being referred to as a child.

“Um…” she blinked, fumbling a little with her words. “I think…I think that Sir Leonel isn’t so bad. He has a good heart.”

“A good heart!” Julian rolled his eyes, swinging his arm out in a show of dismissal. “As if! Now listen well, lassie, let me tell you about the time when I helped that Sir Leonel of yours out. Do you know how the bastard repaid me?” 6AKfRz

Illysa flinched, her young face pulling into a complicated expression; one that was of both concern and intrigue. After warring with her thoughts for a moment, she couldn’t help but ask, “How?”

“My dear girl, are you familiar with rope—“

“Doctor!” Leonel stormed through the front door, making his presence known with that deafening voice of his. Julian’s blueiron leg was slung over his shoulder as if the thing barely weighed anything at all. “Why are you still lazing around? Here, put this on.”

Julian was so offended by the inquisitor’s overbearing commands that he almost failed to notice the person that waited patiently outside his door. bImveP

Ignoring both the coat and blueiron armor, the doctor tossed aside the covers and slipped out of bed. Instead of finding his walking stick like he probably should have, Julian merely hobbled toward the door, uncaring about his awkward and clumsy movements. “Ah! Katie my darling. What brings you all the way out here? Don’t tell me the little ones also caught your mother’s sickness? I did leave her with more medication than needed, but if you need more by any chance…”

Katie’s countenance softened at the sight of him and Julian was quite pleased with her gentle and caring expression. He couldn’t help but compare her sweet little face with Leonel’s overbearing scowl. “Doctor…It’s not about that.”

With a heavy sigh, Julian shook his head. “Don’t tell me you’re siding with that overgrown man child, now are you my girl? This old man can’t keep up with you youngsters. Even if you keep yelling at me to get moving, it’s not exactly possible at my age.”

“Doctor…” Katie’s smile was wry. “You’re not actually that old are you?” r6zdtC

“Pah! Look at me!” He made a crude motion to himself.

Katie blinked and stared as commanded. Julian was above average in height, very thin, and had a waist likely smaller than her own. Because of his wiry frame, clothes always sat loosely on his body, for nothing made for men of his height seemed to ever properly fit his figure. His chestnut hair fell around his face in delicate waves, brown eyes lined with long lashes.

And though there were slight wrinkles around his eyes and lips, Katie thought they added character, rather than lessened the doctor’s attractiveness. She blushed at the thought. Embarrassed, Katie cleared her throat with a cough. “Actually, I don’t think Doctor looks that old at all.” In fact, she would chance to guess him to be no older than his late twenties. She had a feeling he might be a little older than that, but not even Katie was privy to the doctor’s true age.

Julian waved at her dismissively. “What, don’t tell me you’re charmed by my good looks? Lest you forget that I’m both blind and deaf. With this lame leg of mine, I can hardly outrun your old father.” oaNXHU

“That will just mean you need a bigger head start,” a voice growled from behind. Before Julian had a chance to crane his head to glare at the inquisitor, who was no doubt behind him, he felt a weight that fell over his shoulder. Julian reached up, feeling the heavy coat that Leonel had placed there. It was a bit hot for midday, but necessary if they were to camp out in the wilderness where nights were chilled with summer still up around the corner. “Illysa’s all packed up already. We’re just waiting for you, old man.”

Julian clicked his tongue in annoyance. “Were none of you youngsters listening to me? I’m old and I cannot keep up. Elderly need more rest, you know?”

“You’re the one who didn’t listen,” Leonel accused. “In case you’ve forgotten, I already said I’ll carry you. So stop worrying so much and get a move on already!”

Illysa was infuriatingly behind the inquisitor, dressed for travel with a thick cloak around her neck; one that Leonel had undoubtedly unearthed from Julian’s heaps of junk. She was even carrying Julian’s blueiron leg in her arms, her eyes bright and energetic. It seemed that she was ready to leave at any given moment. 3CrdJe

Exasperated, Julian turned to Katie for help, knowing that she was sweet on him and rarely defied his words.

However, even Katie tilted her head at him. “You knew this day would eventually come, didn’t you?” she whispered in a small, shy voice.

Julian felt his eye twitch, his smile strain. Well yes! He knew that this day would inevitably come but that was beside the point. The point was, he wanted to sleep, and no he didn’t want Leonel to carry him!
