The Reincarnated Villainous Young Master's Guide to HappinessCh19 - Smile

It was awkward after Royce stopped crying. They were now sitting in front of each other, legs crisscrossed and pointedly not making eye contact.  2D05W6

The wind had picked up at some point and kept tossing their hair around. Neo’s hair came loose from the hair stick and he was forced to unravel it.

Royce gave it a cursory glance.

“Here,” Neo produced a couple of handkerchiefs and offered one to him.

They looked like an absolute mess and were both ugly criers.  R91dlk

The red-haired teen wordlessly accepted the handkerchief.

“When did you come back?” Neo asked when they finally cleaned themselves of their tears.

He had some suspicions of Royce’s situation, but there was little evidence to prove anything.

“Two and a half weeks ago,” Royce’s voice was rough and hoarse like sandpaper. “I convinced my father and my aunts to recontinue my Successor Training.” He turned to him. “What about you?”

YlDw9k

“It was during the Spring Holidays. I had a few extra days.”

“I see.”

They stopped talking again, neither knowing what to say, which was strange since Royce had always been the chatterbox in their group. He spoke even more than Tybalt, filling up space with mindless words just because he wanted to.

“What happened after I died?” Royce asked.  OC7N6b

Neo found himself staring at some of the pigeons that landed around them.

It wasn’t a great way to continue their conversation. He thought the topic might be a little sore.

Still, they both knew the knowledge was important, regardless of what memories they might bring up.

It was better to bring Royce up to date.  jLQ9lq

Royce was now staring at him intently. He seemed… tired. His eyes lacked the spark they held back then.

Honestly, it was lacking in everything, like two pools of still water, untouched and bare of any emotions.

It was a very guarded look, unlike the Royce of before.

Neo didn’t know what to make of that.  RZhbev

The black-haired youth fiddled with the hair stick, his fingers tracing the detailed etches and pressing the sharp point against his skin as he avoided the other’s sharp gaze.

“Tybalt gave all the information he had on me to Aurelion and left the academy. Soon after, Finneas confessed the truth about our schemes. I wasn’t in the right state of mind after that, especially with graduation drawing closer and my imprisonment imminent, so I kidnapped Sutton and tried to kill him.”

Please support our translators at chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Royce didn’t say anything, so he continued.

“Aurelion stabbed me with a sword and I bled out. After that, I woke up in the other world and decided… I was going to do better. I changed my name to Neo and became a doctor.” fJMjKg

The air stilled between them.

He watched as Royce took in the information.

A few seconds later, the other spoke.

“Doctor Neo Overland?” FvKycL

Oh?

Neo blinked.

“You heard of me?” he asked, surprised.

Royce shook his head. “I heard your name on the news a couple of times. You and your team were researching a vaccine for the pandemic, weren’t you?” oXr2Su

Neo nodded. “Yes. But I died before I could present my research.”

Dying was an understatement. His death was by far the worst timing in the history of poorly-timed deaths. To die a few mere moments after finding a major breakthrough against one of the most notorious epidemics in history was an absolute disgrace.

The virus emerged from unknown origins. It grew like cancer, starting from the lungs before spreading throughout the body. There was no evidence of it being infectious.

Some people just started having it, beginning with the elderly and immune-compromised.  kxBUOo

Eventually, Neo was able to trace the origin of the vaccine back to its roots, and as it turned out, the virus had a wild history.

In the process of human evolution, there was a virus similar to the placenta, which invaded the body of the earliest human ancestors.

It had been dormant within the human body for millennia, until now.

Neo suddenly realized something and a frown appeared on his face. “Did they find a cure for the virus then?”  DFZObw

Royce nodded. “Yes. They said one of the test samples you were cultivating managed to eradicate the virus entirely. It evolved with the virus and continued to eliminate it until the body was cured. It was all over the news. People were celebrating.”

“That’s good—”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

“—Until your death was also reported. I heard a friend of yours donated your body to science.”

Neo was given a very pointed look, but he didn’t care. He was able to save those people. Finally, that was one regret he didn’t have to worry about. 91QdZu

Despite himself and his own misgivings, the hard look in Royce’s eyes softened.

“What about you? Were you from the States?”

Royce was pulled from his thoughts.

Caught slightly off-guard, he snorted. “No. That’s a very Ameragan thing to say, by the way. I was actually Anglish. God save the Queen.”  Rd4K2e

Neo guessed the other might have also done something great in the other world, seeing as his circumstances were similar to his own.

Perhaps he joined the army and made his way up the ranks. Or became a wealthy man through many means. Or even a writer or an artist. No matter what, Neo was sure Royce’s ambitions were just as fulfilled as his own.

“Did you achieve your dreams?”

i4Bbev

There was no way in hell he was going to admit this in front of Nazareth, but Royce was actually a big fan of Doctor Overland.

Some may ask, how did a famous jewelry designer like himself become seemingly obsessed with the works of a medical researcher?

And it was completely reasonable to be skeptical of the two connections since they were, after all, in two completely different fields.

Royce’s fascination for the man started when he first read an article about Doctor Overland back in high school. sAXQD0

Doctor Overland was a young man, good-looking, and a peerless genius.

But most importantly, he had a nice face.

Instant inspiration.

A genius with a symmetrical face and the longest eyelashes he’s ever seen.  VwKEXg

Royce ended up using surgical steel in his early designs for a near-decade when he first started out.

He created an entire jewelry line from his one moment of inspiration and that same exact jewelry line was what convinced his mentor to take him on as an apprentice.

For the longest time, Doctor Overland was his muse, and now his worldviews were crumbling like sand.

Nazareth was Doctor Overland.  vdxLWy

The man he hated was also the same man trying to combat a pandemic—along with cancer, dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, HIV/AIDS, muscular dystrophy, sickle cell disease, etc., etc., etc. through drug and medicine research.

Maybe, if he hit himself hard enough, he might wake up in the modern world again and learn Doctor Overland was still alive and well and recently cured cancer since developing a vaccine for the Ghirlanda-14 virus alone wasn’t considered talented enough!

“Did you achieve your dreams?”

… And he forgot he was still sitting across from Nazareth.  C49iFO

“I opened a company,” Royce answered. “Khartier.”

He knew Nazareth was an awkward man. Forcing the other to start the conversation was one of the most uncomfortable things anyone could ask of him.

Royce was petty.

He deserved to be petty.  yYBZ 9

“The auction house?”

Royce was very smug hearing this—and also quite flattered. The well-known hermit Doctor Overland actually heard about his company!

Chrysanthemum Garden.

But wait!

It was still Nazareth…  5QqIjM

He pursed his lips and stared at the ground, wanting to burn a hole into the stone.

Nazareth continued, “I had a colleague who managed to get a bracelet from the rarity collections and talked about it for a whole week. I heard she sacrificed a few of her research papers for the bidding, though I’m not really sure. I don’t really keep up with these things…”

Royce frowned.

He was oddly disappointed with Nazareth’s lack of interest in his work.  r5IEKv

In the modern world, he became a very rich philanthropist after opening his company.

He even funded more than half of Doctor Overland’s research as an anonymous donor.

“My net worth was at least eight billion before I died. Didn’t you have a cellphone?” Royce settled on sneering.

“I owned a BlackBerry—” GUPIfX

“Of course you did. The rest of the world was already at iPhone 16 Alpha and you still settled for a shitty phone.”

“Hah,” Nazareth released a helpless sigh.

Royce realized his mistake and immediately began to backtrack. He was not supposed to be joking right now.

Silence descended on them once again.  hALdmu

Both of them didn’t know what to say.

The two of them looked at each other quietly.

They both smiled.

Royce sighed in one part frustration and two parts exasperation.  kxDYVd

This was… this was nice.

It felt like the good old days before everything went to shit.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

He didn’t know if anyone else remembered, but Nazareth hadn’t always been a terrible person.

Or, to reiterate, he hadn’t always been terrible to him, Tybalt, and the others.  FX5iu4

When they were still a new group, just some rejects in the noble circle, either too dumb, or too timid, or weak, or powerless—picked up like strays by the bastard Odum child, himself—Nazareth had been nice.

When did it all go wrong?

“I poured my heart and soul into every piece of jewelry I’ve ever made, so I expect the clients to appreciate the art. The rarity collection was one of the few that went into auction for charity. Your colleague should be treating her jewelry like it were her only child and heir.”

“She did. Made it into an heirloom and everything.” 2uP3Xw

A gust of wind blew Nazareth’s hair into his face. He pulled them away and tried to wrap the strands into the hair stick.

Seriously, where the hell had Royce seen that hair stick before?

“Of all things, I never expected you to go into jewelry making. It is quite surprising to hear about it.”

His eyes narrowed. “I’ll have you know the Benedicks own several jewelry stores in our fiefs. Have you forgotten we monopolized the Empire’s jewel trade?”  riqC26

“Ah…” Nazareth trailed off, realizing his mistake.

Royce clicked his teeth.

Nazareth seemed to have noticed his change in mood and immediately changed topics. “So who are you? The CEO?”

“Owner and Head Designer,” Royce corrected. “I went by Sir Roy Pierre. Got knighted by the Queen of Angland in my mid-twenties after making her a birthday gift.” It could have also been due to all the charity work he did. Just as Nazareth went into medicine, Royce built the Pierre Foundation to help as many children as he could into adulthood and beyond.  M62wGz

“I gave the CEO position to a friend of mine since he had a head for numbers. I was better off designing the jewelry, so everything worked out perfectly in the end… until I died in a plane crash. What I’m more surprised about is the fact you went into medicine, of all things.”

He folded his arms. “Sounds pretty ironic, considering your track record.” He couldn’t help the bitterness slipping into his tone.

It was clear to see Nazareth’s one goal in that lifetime was to try and redeem himself of his deeds.

Royce just wished he had turned over a new leaf sooner, before… everything.  94tFfD

The grudge he held for the last two lifetimes—it would remain in his heart until the day he could live without any memories of being Royce Benedick.

Hopefully, this will be the last lifetime.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Nazareth traced the ground in thought, perhaps mulling over what to say.

“I wanted to help people after what happened. Learning medicine was a way to save lives, so I went for it.” SsnrWY

Cue another round of awkward silence with no eye contact. To be exact, it was Neo staring intently at the floor while Royce’s gaze drilled holes into his bowed head.

“I heard you graduated early and went straight into the field.”

Early might be an exaggeration.

Due to Royce’s somewhat unhealthy obsession with Doctor Overland, the story goes that the man graduated high school at a young age and went to college, where he spent barely two years completing his degree(s) before going straight into medicine. Due to his unusual genius and talents, (unbeknownst to him), Doctor Overland entered the public eye at a very young age (for a doctor). BR5Lva

Honestly, if the medical world had not protected this genius within its over-protective embrace, the man would have known all this long ago. However, because he was well-sheltered and dearly loved, these talks of fame flew over his head, and sha la la la la disappeared in his presence.

Faced with Royce’s disbelief, Neo shrugged. “I don’t think so. The material was easy, so I read some books and took the exams early. They found me a few doctors I could apprentice under and everything was just set in stone after that.”

He did try being a surgeon at one point, but operations gave him too many flashbacks. Neo had gone back to research and pharmaceuticals after working in a hospital for a few months.

The head of the research facility had welcomed him back with open arms and tears in his eyes, which was a very strange experience, now that he thought about it.  QygF1N

“The material was easy,” Royce deadpanned as if Neo had just told him he learned the Hindi alphabet in the womb.

“Bloody prodigies, that whole goddamn family… Fucking Odums and their standards…” He muttered. “Where was this useful intelligence the last time you were here?”

“Scheming to kill Aurelion,” Neo admitted quietly, feeling rather small. He was a good judge of emotions, and seeing the pissed-off expression on Royce’s face, he shrunk a little into his uniform.

“Exactly,” Royce said sharply, fuming on the inside. TslddN

He had to struggle through school and climb his way up another jewelry company before he was able to open Khartier. Learning how to design and make jewelry was not an easy feat, and he could still feel those apprenticeship days.

His mentor was a fiery lady who dragged him through hell like it was the National Olympics. He was practically a hostage tied up and dragged from behind if you considered her mentorship to be comparable to the one-thousand-meter dash.

There was so much he didn’t know, (and so, so much pain—Lord, please, not again—), and here was Nazareth, graduating at eighteen or something with four degrees and joining a well-known pharmaceutical company while the rest of the world fought over who got to have him in their medical facilities next Tuesday.

“Roy?” OGc23K

His focus snapped to attention at the call of his name, and he saw vermillion eyes and the worried little frown on petal-like lips, not realizing Nazareth had called him by his other name.

“Can I… Can I call you Roy?” Nazareth paused. “Or maybe you prefer Royce?”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Royce expressionlessly stared at him. He shouldn’t be doing this. With their current history, he would be stupid to try and be friends again.

“Roy’s fine. What difference does it even make?” he looked away.  6v1Xtx

Whatever. They’d all been through shit, and he had used up three decades to make peace with himself. Coming back here before everything went to hell wasn’t exactly great, but at least it wasn’t as bad as before.

For one, Nazareth wasn’t a crazy psycho anymore.

Again, it didn’t make it any better, but Royce obviously had no choice in who got to come back.

He pretended not to see the faint smile on Nazareth’s face.  ltDZi4

Royce didn’t care.

He didn’t.

Nazareth went back to playing with his hair stick.

“Where did you get that?” Royce couldn’t help but ask. It was distracting him.  Kq1w9f

“Hm? I bought it from a shop.”

Nazareth raised the hair stick and showed him.

His brows scrunched together in confusion.

The universe really worked in mysterious ways.  vuKJSN

After coming back to this world, he sold his most recent designs to several jewelry shops. They were the ones he had been drawing on his ill-fated flight to the United States of Ameranglo.

When the news broke out of Doctor Overland’s vaccine (and death), he felt like he needed to arrange a new line of jewelry in honor of the man. It was only fitting for the reveal to take place in the State’s Khartier location rather than Angland.

“Wait, are you Sir Leroy Pierrot?”

Royce gave Nazareth a deadpanned stare. “Why?” nlIrvN

“Hm?”

“Why are you so stupid?”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

The two of them sat together and took in the view from the bell chamber.

It was honestly quite beautiful.  oMS2Dp

Nazareth might think he was the only one with regrets, but Royce had few as well, such as his two aunts. They were the remaining women in this life who cared for him and doted on him after the death of his two older half-brothers and mother.

There was also that trashy father of his, but behind the trashy-ness, the man cared.

Back then, when the Benedick Household collapsed and he was taken away, he never got to see what happened to his father.

The man probably died first. szT4V0

His aunts died in the torture room, but at the very least, they died quickly.

This time around, he will make sure they won’t come into harm’s way, starting with introducing Khartier to this world and putting more focus on the jewel trade.

His father was clumsy in business, but thankfully, Royce was a little better than him.

As Roy, before he had his friend take the CEO position, he handled most of the work himself.  GrddWm

He loved his work, but he also loved money.

He was determined to make lots of money in this life!

Bong! Bong! Bong!

The deafening sound of the giant bell above them nearly caused him to fly out of his own skin. oFHPX2

Judging by the way Nazareth froze, with his eyes wide and his face frozen in shock, the other also felt the shocking sensation of the bell’s vibration.

They both covered their ears and winced as the ringing echoed. Eventually, the noise died down and they both sighed in relief.

“I hated it when it did that.”

“You always did choose the shittiest locations. Your taste in rendezvous is similar to your taste in phones.” L z8BF

“… We should go to class. We’re late.”

Nazareth stood up, but Royce didn’t follow him.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

“Roy?”

Royce hesitated.  qjv1de

He was scared.

Of course, he wanted to change his fate, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t scared. There were countless people in that class that he harmed. At the same time, there were also people who harmed him in kind.

But rather than fearing them as people, he feared what memories might be drawn up once he saw them again. Terrible memories, things that have not settled completely into his mind, all of it was like a puzzle smashed into smithereens. The sensation was similar to seeing clearly through a foggy shroud, but continuing to remain lost in that maze of remembrance.

Royce deliberated. So much time had passed. The faces of Tybalt and Finneas were blurry at best, and he chose not to remember too much of his time at the academy, repressing them since the day he became Roy. Would he remember them? The people? Every deed he had ever done ’till this point? TsyaiA

“Do you think this is worth it?”

“I think it’s a good opportunity.”

A bit of exhaustion could be heard in Nazareth’s voice, which reminded Royce of his own exhaustion. Why them? Why did they have to do this again?

“Let’s go to class,” Nazareth said.   5tc423

Royce didn’t know if he could trust him again.

He knew they were different, now.

Better, maybe.

There were scars, but they were old. Healed over two lifetimes.  kfZe1J

Was this worth it?

There was a hint of a smile on Nazareth’s face, promising reassurance despite his own fears.

Royce realized he was scared too.

He found himself wondering if this was what it could have been if they hadn’t been so broken in the first place.  IOCFRl

He could imagine it. A kind but cold-face Nazareth, a snide and snarky Tybalt, and a Finneas with a sailor’s mouth being so done with the rest of them.

And Royce…

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

He would definitely be smiling.

When was the last time he truly smiled? m7fgrt

In the modern world, he got rid of this awful habit where he would smile at everything.

For the entirety of that lifetime, regardless if he was happy or not, he maintained this resting bitch face he inherited from his mother to the point he almost gave himself facial paralysis.

His childhood therapist and many specialists were concerned, but Royce didn’t want to be the Asslicking Dog anymore.

He was called dumb and easy for smiling so much. Back when he was still just Royce, he foolishly thought, since no one in Noble Society really smiled, then he should help make up for what it lacked.  tXqyw0

Cheerful, peppy, and always smiling happily, regardless of what he actually felt.

In the end, he only made himself the target of ridicule.

Until…

“Hey.” vTrwtB

Royce raised his head and smiled brightly as he greeted a pretty-looking kid with red vermillion eyes and a long cascade of black hair.

“Hi! Are you a girl?” he asked in a bright tone of voice.

The girl raised an eyebrow. “No. I’m the birthday boy.”

“Oh! You’re the bastard!”  pnGY1H

The boy winced. Then he scowled at him. “Don’t call me that!” he hissed. “Why are you smiling in the corner all by yourself? Don’t you know how creepy that is?”

“Well, no one really wanted to talk to me since they think I’m dumb…”

“That’s because you have a dumb smile on your face.”

“You might be right,” Royce beamed. “What’s your name?” 8 ZI6l

The boy pursed his lips. He looked around the room, giving it a sweep.

Royce saw several people discreetly eyeing their corner with a wary expression, but none of them dared to approach. He could see the way some of them frowned in distaste, but distaste for what?

Please support our translators at chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

The boy scoffed. “You know I’m a bastard, but you don’t even remember my name.” He held out a hand for him to shake. “Dumb or not, you’re the only one who didn’t run away. I’m Nazareth. And you?”

Nazareth had taken one look at him and brought him into his circle of friends.  OFSc3T

Royce was grateful since he felt so alone after the death of his older brother.

Yet, the world wasn’t simple and humans were more complex than the universe itself.

Maybe it was always meant to be, seeing how broken they were, like ragged toys trying to survive the violent waves after being tossed into the roaring waters.

“Roy?” 6R5e4B

Royce saw that Nazareth had stood up. His hand was outstretched toward him, the offer spoke more words than anything else.

Carefully, Royce took his hand and Nazareth pulled him up.

The two of them made their way down the bell tower steps, down the staircase from the lower platform, through the hallway of the school, and toward the direction of their classroom.

sgdzRl

When they reached their classroom, the door slid open before Neo could knock on it.

“Mr. Odum, Mr. Benedick. I am glad to see the two of you can join us for this lesson. Benedick, your vacation is over. Your family has only excused you for two weeks, not two weeks and a day, you foolish child,” Professor Rickman greeted them with his usual sharp tongue. “Class started more than half an hour ago. Where in the world were you two?”

Neo gave a panicking glance towards Tybalt, who stuck out his tongue and made a swooning gesture.

Immediately, he understood.  MLUP0g

“I’m sorry, Professor,” he apologized quickly. “I needed to go to the infirmary for a superficial laceration on my hand and found Royce there. He had a bad case of somnolence this morning, and it took some time to get him to feel better and move around.”

From the corner of his eyes, he could see Finneas shaking his head as he mouthed What the hell?

Tybalt gave him a thumbs up.

In layman’s terms, Neo told the Professor he had a paper cut and Roy was sleeping during the first half of the day. UEyc1g

Rickman knew this, Neo knew this, Tybalt and Finneas knew this, and Royce knew this. Thankfully, the rest of the class was willing to pretend they didn’t know any of these terms and thought they really had a medical emergency.

In the end, Neo and Royce were given a warning and sent to their seats.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

“Open your alchemy textbooks to page eighty-four. We’ll be looking at some reactions today. Pair up with your desk partners and then pair up with another group of partners. I will be handing out samples to each group. Peregrine, do not—and I cannot stress this enough, you nitwit—DO NOT drink the samples.”

“… Yes, Professor.” eOVnNa

The class went to work.

“So, where did you guys go?”

Tybalt asked as the four of them grouped up.

Neo took a sample and poured it into a cauldron. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I had a very mild laceration on my finger that required some medical attention.” vlChVw

“—And I had somno-something,” Royce added, handing Neo a spoon.

Tybalt observed them, suspicion clear in his eyes. In the end, he conceded.

“Sure, sure. Whatever you say.”

Finneas gave them a deadpanned look. 8EK9CL

“I still don’t know how the hell you were able to interpret Phelan’s acting. He said the same exact thing. Like, what the hell?”

“Hah—”

Three heads snapped in the direction of the laugh.

“Naza?” mBZ5RH

Neo tried to desperately cover the laugh threatening to leave him.

“S-sorry,” he chuckled. “I-I’m fine—hahaha…”

He tried to laugh as quietly as he could. Looking up, he saw Professor Rickman giving him a deer-in-the-headlights stare.

“Pfft—!” h3 owz

Whether it was due to the built-up stress, or just genuine laughter, Neo thought he understood Royce a little more.

  1. Thanks for the chapter!!

Is Roy the ml? Or is it the butler?? aa idk I kinda ship both /// but Roy being a fan of doctor Neo is kinda cute aa

  2. Neo using the most complicated medical terms he can think of to describe the simplest of conditions had me cackling. Thanks for the chapter!

  3. And with this I now embark in the brand new “in the other world I was a fan of your face” ship. Thanks for the chapter!

  4. I love all these entirely coincidental (perhaps?) details 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

    God save the author!!

  5. Woohooo Neo’s friend group: complete! Now our boy can hang out and have a good time in this timeline.

    Thank you for the chapter!

  6. Say, you could have toned down Royce’s torture a bit. The things that happened to him is just too unpardonable. If I ever saw the cause of THAT kind of torture, regardless of how many lifetimes in between , I’d do things to that person that will get me jailed and executed. But, that’s just me. Royce’s story breaks my suspension of disbelief. ¯(°_o)/¯

    Thanks for the update.

    • The only “issue” I have with that part, if you could even call it that, is that just the dismemberment alone (already way more than enough for a lifetime of ptsd by itself) would’ve been painful enough for Roy to die from shock (if not from blood loss or infection first!) and unless they gave him something very powerful to forcefully keep him conscious, it’s strange to think he could’ve still felt the mutilation and later drowning with such clarity. Or maybe it’s based on ancient tortures like Jia Hyson and being baked alive, idk.

All in all, I’m just happy these two have had a chance to love happier loves and that Roy is willing to at least try to believe in his Doctor Overland even while Naza-shaped.

  7. I don’t know why, but I thought this chapter was really heartwarming = ̄ω ̄=

    Praying for their futures 🙏

Thank you so so much for the chapter ꒰⑅ᵕ༚ᵕ꒱˖♡♡♡♡˖꒰ᵕ༚ᵕ⑅꒱.

  8. Still wondering how Peregrine survived drinking all of those chemicals… He probably sniffs concoction too..

  9. The relationship is complicated but if they actually talk about it it’s kinda hmmm okay to work 9n??

I have this feeling of shipping Royce and Neo (๑꒪▿꒪)*
