Route of RetreatChapter 46

Fu Chenshan told He Yu that he was getting married. Even Fu Chenshan himself did not know what kind of reaction he was expecting from He Yu. iuq4EJ

At that moment, He Yu didn’t have much thoughts in his head. He just subconsciously replied, “Congratulations.”

Fu Chenshan looked at He Yu, seemingly a little distracted.

He Yu could only say one more thing: “When will the wedding be held?”

Fu Chenshan came to his senses and said, “It’s still under planning; it won’t happen so soon.” dxSDie

He Yu nodded to express understanding.

Qiao Mudong listened beside him with an expression like a smile yet not a smile, but he didn’t say anything.

However, Fu Chenshan said to him, “Go back when you have time. Dad has something to tell you, and the whole family wants to have a meal together.”

Qiao Mudong said sarcastically, “You changed your tune so quickly, ah!”

Fu Chenshan smiled nonchalantly and said to He Yu, “I have something else to do, so I’ll leave first.”

He Yu nodded, took Qiao Mudong’s hand, and stood beside the path, making way for Fu Chenshan.

When Fu Chenshan passed by He Yu, he just nodded. He originally wanted to say, “I wish you happiness,” but he felt that this sentence was a bit ridiculous to say in this situation. No matter what the reason is, he found it quite difficult to sincerely wish Fu Chenshan and Ling Zhilu happiness.

After Fu Chenshan passed by, Qiao Mudong held He Yu’s shoulders and continued walking forward. Just as He Yu wanted to turn back, Qiao Mudong reached out to fix his head, preventing him from turning back. dsqBtM

“What?” He Yu asked.

Qiao Mudong asked back, “Is there anything good to see?”

He Yu smiled. “Sometimes, looking back doesn’t mean you want to go back. It just means that you want to see the way you came from, so that you can make sure you won’t make any detours in the future.”

Qiao Mudong said, “Then follow me, so that you won’t make any detours anymore.” 3ZnVGv

After all, He Yu didn’t look back, so he didn’t see Fu Chenshan standing there and looking at his back. Some mistakes are accidental, and some mistakes are inevitable. There may be countless forks in life, but from the moment you are born, your character determines the path you will choose for yourself. And what kind of scenery there will be at those missed forks in the road, you can only watch others experience it, but you will never be able to understand it yourself.

He Yu looked around the spacious hall. There was a large introduction to the nursing home hanging on one wall. He Yu was just killing time waiting. When he looked up at the introduction, Qiao Mudong was already standing beside him. He asked, “Are you sad?”

Qiao Mudong said, “Your first love is getting married.”

He Yu asked back, “When was your first love?” 1xgpvQ

Qiao Mudong snorted, “Who remembers that kind of thing?”

He Yu said, “How should I put it? For both men and women, the marriage of their first love is probably not a happy thing. It may be a little melancholic, but at the same time, I don’t think it is a situation that needs descriptive words of sad emotions.”

Qiao Mudong said, “You’ve been talking nonsense for quite a while. I still can’t get used to it.”

He Yu said, “I don’t understand where you heard that I was reluctant to let go. Isn’t it you? Your first love won’t be me, ba?” PwjUG8

Qiao Mudong raised his head and suddenly began to read the introduction on the wall seriously.

He Yu smiled and bumped his leg with his knee.

Qiao Mudong had no intention of talking to him.

At this time, the registered nurse finally shouted, “Sir, your registration is ready, and you can now visit the patient.” ikxgOt

With temporary access cards hanging around their necks, the two people walked along the passage leading to the tall building behind.

As he walked, He Yu looked around. Even though it was a well-equipped sanatorium, it still had a chilly feel to it. There were no people in the yard walking or basking in the sun. The expressions on their faces were a bit distant and indifferent, and they rarely even talked to each other.

Qiao Mudong said, “Many elderly people here suffer from chronic diseases or are not in good mental condition, and their families are tired of taking care of them.”

He Yu shook his head. “They’re all excuses. Since you have so much money to send people to this place, why don’t you hire a caregiver and let the old man stay at home with his children? Isn’t it because they dislike and avoid them? Seeing each other and extending greetings every day—they’re dying to save the trouble of doing so.” 57uBgb

Qiao Mudong asked, “You mean Fu Chenshan?”

He Yu was a little helpless and said, “You—I’m not talking about anyone!”

Qiao Mudong’s grandfather lived in Room 12 on the 5th floor of Building B. When they arrived, the nurse had just taken the old man’s temperature and blood pressure for the morning and came out of the room with a cart.

When Qiao Mudong saw the nurse preparing to leave, he asked, “How is Mr. Qiao’s health here?” dJFpxA

The nurse said, “It’s very good, but his brain is getting more and more confused lately. He still can’t recognize people even if he meets them every day.”

Qiao Mudong nodded. “Thank you.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Hearing this, He Yu pulled Qiao Mudong’s sleeve and looked up at him to express his doubts.

Qiao Mudong said, “He has dementia, but he’s doing just fine. Let’s go inside.” 3FaG5y

Pushing open the door, He Yu first caught sight of an old man sitting next to the window. He was wearing a white patient dress and had short, snow-white hair. He heard someone opening the door, but he didn’t even turn his head.

In total, Qiao Mudong’s grandfather was at least seventy or eighty years old. As Qiao Mudong approached, He Yu saw that his face was mottled and covered with brown age spots, and his eyes were already cloudy.

Qiao Mudong took a chair and asked He Yu to sit on the side of the old man.

He walked up to the old man, raised his hand, and shook him. “Respected Sir, I came here to see you.” DdhTam

He Yu reached out and patted his hand away. “He’s your grandfather, be polite.”

Qiao Mudong said, “It’s okay, he doesn’t recognize me.”

Sure enough, the old man raised his head, looked at Qiao Mudong, frowned, and asked, “Wenjie? Are you Wenjie?”

Qiao Mudong did not deny it and said, “Yes, it’s me. I came to see you. How are you doing recently?” VMyZfN

The old man nodded. “I’m very good, ah.”

He Yu asked in a low voice, “Who is Wenjie?”

Qiao Mudong said, “It’s his son. He has been dead for more than ten years.”

He Yu couldn’t help but be a little surprised. FykSd9

The old man suddenly turned to look at He Yu and said, “Is this Wenxin?”

He Yu asked Qiao Mudong, “Who is Wenxin?”

Qiao Mudong smiled. “Wenxin is my mother.”

He Yu suddenly felt a little embarrassed. It was difficult to explain to a confused old man that he was not his daughter, so he could only smile along with him. 2Qxwe

At this time, the nurse knocked on the door and came in and said, “It’s time for Mr. Qiao to take medicine.”

Qiao Mudong and He Yu naturally stepped aside. He Yu asked, “Is that Wenjie your uncle?”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Qiao Mudong nodded and whispered, “Qiao Wenjie and Qiao Wenxin, his son and daughter, were also famous in the north of the city for their beauty, but they both lost their lives at a young age.” After a slight pause, he continued, “Can’t you tell? What kind of person do you think the old man looks like?”

“What does he look like?” He Yu said. “He looks just like an ordinary old man.” iXAzlH

Qiao Mudong smiled softly when he heard this. “His name is Qiao Song. He was very popular in the north of the city in the 1980s. And unlike businessmen like the Hong family, he is a real gangster who has a territory under his control, has sworn brothers, and would get whatever money that comes from them.”

He Yu was surprised and said, “Then how did you and your mother—”

“My mother was made pregnant by Ling Qiang and then dumped. He was very angry and asked my mother to deal with me, but my mother refused to be told off in taking control of my life and death. I heard that he also found someone to chop off Ling Qiang, but he could not kill Ling Qiang. During that time, Ling Qiang fled to the coast. Later, after my mother gave birth to me, he kicked us out of the house and refused to recognize us as mother and son.” When Qiao Mudong said these words, his tone was still the same. It’s bland and doesn’t have much emotion.

He Yu couldn’t help but look at Qiao Song. He looked like many ordinary old people. Even when the nurse gave him medicine, he refused to take it obediently. DkegId

He Yu asked, “What about your uncle?”

Qiao Mudong said, “Qiao Wenjie was caught by the police for drug trafficking, and was sentenced to death immediately. The old man was really sad for his son for a long time. He didn’t want to make money anymore, and he didn’t want to do anything anymore. He just followed his people. He has indeed saved a lot of money, but his temper is getting weirder and weirder. A few years ago, he realized that his memory began to become blurry. Probably because he was afraid that others would rob him of his money, even those brothers who followed him for decades were also driven away, and then he asked someone to bring me back. I was not interested in his money, and I had no feelings for this person, but after all, my surname was Qiao, so I’ll just let him die together with his money, and if I collect his body for him, then it will be regarded as fulfilling my duty to the Qiao family.”

He Yu was quite emotional when he heard this, but he was unable to sympathize with Qiao Song. So he could only hold Qiao Mudong’s hand tightly.

Qiao Mudong seemed to think that it didn’t matter and said, “By the way, I’ll show you my mother’s photo.” He walked to the low cabinet beside the bed and pulled out a photo album. Plc6wy

The photo album contains mostly black-and-white photos, including photos of the brother and sister, Qiao Wenjie and Qiao Wenxin, when they were children. As Qiao Mudong said, they’re a pair of beautiful siblings. There are also photos of Qiao Song in it. When he was young, he looked tall, serious, and handsome. Flipping through the pages, Qiao Wenjie and Qiao Wenxin gradually grew up. Finally, there are colored photos. Qiao Wenjie has become a fair and refined man, while Qiao Wenxin has an elegant and beautiful appearance. In that era, without photographic technology to modify themselves, such a gorgeous-looking woman was hard to come by.

It was this kind of beauty that attracted a daring and resolute man like Ling Qiang, but it was also this kind of beauty that caused her to suffer half of her life in front of her own son.

He Yu couldn’t help but turn his head to look at Qiao Mudong. Some traces of Qiao Wenxin could still be found in Qiao Mudong’s facial features. For example, his eyes had thick and slender eyelashes, and his lips had slightly upward corners.

Qiao Mudong looked at the photo album with a calm expression, but from time to time, he would smile when looking at his mother’s photos. QbPWgn

He Yu asked him, “Do you hate your grandpa?”

Qiao Mudong said, “I can’t really say how much I hate him, but I definitely don’t like him as well.” After all, you have to walk your own path. If you want to walk that path ’til the end, then don’t blame the people who abandoned you midway.

He Yu patted his shoulder and smiled at him.

Qiao Mudong glanced at him and said, “What the fuck are you smiling at?” bZ5jEk

  1. Since i can’t access reading list anymore it was quite troublesome to manually checked on a lot of updated/bookmarked novels like how am i supposed to remember all the titles 😔

    • I know right?! Such a nightmare 😣

But I found out that if you add the roles of the novels you’re following on discord, you’ll get notifications when they are updated. Not all novels have roles, but a lot of them do. 😊

        • You need to right click (if on pc) or tap and hold (if on mobile) to open a menu. Then you can click in the notifications in this menu to make sure you have at the least “only @mentions” on and that you don’t have “supress all role @mentions” on. You should then start getting pings for your chosen roles

          • I just checked and it’s like this exactly 🤔 I think the problem is in my phone settings. I did just changed some things, hopefully it’ll work this time.. none of the novel that I tagged has been updated since the change. Thank you though 🙂

      • Yes i tried to discord too and sometimes they did gave me notifications but most of my novels collections pretty quiet so whenever i visits this site i just tried to remember any words from the titles to search. Since so many i can’t remember i guess many of them got abandoned 😭
