The Room of Bygone DaysChapter 17

A red-haired young man filled his view. Evan stared at his heterochromatic eyes for a moment. The man before him looked vaguely familiar, but his mind was in turmoil, and he couldn’t recall the other’s name.

“Are you okay? You look a bit off…” mo2pHJ

Perhaps it was because Evan’s expression seemed so unusual, the young man wiggled his fingers in front of Evan’s eyes.

Suddenly, the name popped into Evan’s mind.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Alister… Oh… Goddess of Magic, what happened to me?”

Evan rubbed his temples and slowly sat up. He found himself lying in a bed in his dormitory, his forehead throbbing. pDFZi1

“Do you not remember? You fainted when Mage Doug was attacked by that tri-horned demon.”

Alister leaned closer, his touch on Evan’s forehead a bit too intimate. As the other’s cold fingertips brushed against him, Evan couldn’t help but shiver. It felt like panic was about to consume him, but that sensation swiftly shifted into comfort and closeness.

Evan relaxed into Alister’s embrace. He was somewhat surprised that he had momentarily forgotten – he and Alister had maintained this intimate relationship over the years, one that many mages would deem depraved and abnormal.

“I think I’m just a little exhausted. And the fact that a tri-horned demon did that to a mage…” Evan hesitated for a moment, then omitted the details, “It’s pretty sickening.”

He sighed.

“At any rate, it’s over. How long have I been unconscious?”

“Not long, just in time for dinner. Do you still have an appetite?” Alister asked with care.

Evan leaned in and planted an affectionate kiss on the corner of the other’s mouth. QprOb7

“Of course.”

Together, the two stood up… though the more accurate term would probably be “one”. Their fused, bulbous body cast a massive shadow in the dormitory filled with flesh and blood.

They wriggled their body: two heads, four limbs, and an elongated fleshy tail with numerous appendages, slowly making their way towards the door.

Everything appeared as ordinary and sweet as ever, but as Evan opened the door and the bloody corridor met his eyes, he felt a fleeting sense of strangeness. btS8xX

“Evan?” Alister inquired again, his concern needing no words.

Evan could feel their heart racing in their collective body.

“Alister… do you ever get a… strange feeling?” Evan stared blankly at the spiral tentacles dangling from the ceiling and whispered.

“Our world doesn’t seem… this doesn’t seem right.” bPC4Ty

“God, Evan, I’m genuinely worried now. What are you talking about? Our world… hasn’t it always been like this?”

Alister’s words seemed to undergo some strange distortion and seeped slowly into Evan’s soul.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

After hearing them, Evan shook his head.

“Sorry, I must’ve been imagining things,” Evan said. 6fEjL5

Only he himself would know that deep inside, there was an abnormally feeble voice screaming at the top of its lungs.

Something’s wrong here.

Something’s…

No… U0Dx3M

Thud, thud… thud… &%$*&… thud… %#&#

End.

    • Who knows? First I thought he was an actual person, seeing that he mentioned escaping from aristocrisy before way back in the past, but at some point, he lost his mental sanity and turned into some ‘otherworldly’ creature. This reminds me of the manga ‘Uzumaki’ (spirals) [not “Uzumaki Naruto” , they are 2 completely Different Plots] Very creepy looking and the ending part is slightly similar to this, though I admit the two people had a chance to escape the area in that story unlike here wherein all means of escape was completely cut off.

  1. That was definitely NOT what I was expecting from “God loves a mage” trope …. not at all 👄

  2. Yo what in the world. I thought I was tripping the entire time. So is it that Evan eventually became one with “Him” but “Him” decided to live through Alistair’s form and keep up the mage tower to bring some form of comfort to Evan while always being by his side?

  3. The mind fuckery was on a different level with this one. Honestly, i loved this take on the god loves a mortal trope. Because honestly, these divine beings made the way they are will never have the same notion of love as what mortals would define it to be.

Love this! Thanks for translating the story 🩷🩷

  4. The experience was surreal, I just felt chilled (in a good way) the entire time. Wish I could read this for the first time again.

  5. this was a very twisted take on “god loves a mage” troupe, but i will say even though i was absolutely horrified, disgusted, shocked, a nauseous reading this, i rate it 10/10, and if i could remove my memories just to read it again the first time, i 100% would

  6. Haha… I guess he never actually left the room? I’m not sure what to make of this ending. I liked the novel. Thanks for translating

  7. Poor Evan, loved the lovecraftian and the gore! Thanks for translating, such a nice change of pace to other horror bl novels! 🩷🩷

  8. I confused. Which one is reality in the magic tower? Which one is illusion in the room? Why after the ch 16, Evan went to the darkness, what we got is this chapter? This chapter looks like continuation from ch 14, when Evan and “him” merging.

I think my confusion will never get answered bcs of different perspective and interpretation.

    Btw thanks for the translations

    • I only realize that the name is wrong.

Evan’s instructor who died bcs of tri-horned demon is not Mage Doug. I skimmed ch 1-3, he is called by “instructor”. It’s described this instructor is old and trying to kill Evan to become his test subject. Mage Doug is the new instructor, appear in ch 4, and died/corrupted in ch 7. Also Evan wasn’t fainted after the tri-horned incident.

The author is brilliant to think this kind of plot. How they describe Evan state of mind is fascinating. When i try to reread some part of this story, i still can’t understand how Evan perception in the world and himself work. Even in ch 1 Evan thought he gonna die. It’s amazing even in his subsconcious mind he can think that something’s wrong, still trying to survive.

Will it be better for other mage in mage tower if Evan embrace “him” from the start? Will they safe or will they corrupted faster?

This is my first time reading this kind of story. So i think i can’t help but over analyzed it.

      😅
