  15. It’s a common folk myth that helping a chick hatch is always detrimental to it. Certainly, you shouldn’t help a chick that’s healthy and having no trouble hatch, since it may not be quite ready to come out of the shell yet (they have to absorb the yolk and fluids before it’s safe to come out). However, if a chick is experiencing difficulties, helping it may very well save its life. When I have eggs in the incubator ready to hatch, I always keep a close eye on them. Eggs hatched by a hen also get help – if a chick is having trouble hatching, the hen will peck shell away to help it. It’s very easy for a chick to end up in an awkward position, and suffocate because it can’t open the shell to get air once it’s needed. Some of the best and strongest chicks I’ve raised were from eggs that needed help to hatch.
