Also there was a really interesting discussion last chapter about gong/shou relations, I think so many of you gave such good points! I definitely agree that there is an inherent issue specifically in this arc about a bottom being perceived to be something that you can’t reveal – I cannot confirm if it’s because anything considered “feminine” is perceived as inferior. There’s definitely nothing wrong with being a bottom/top/switch, but you kind of see that YR and FY do mind it and it’s a toxic masculinity thing imo as Fan Yuan always likes talking about being a “real man“.
One point brought up by ferilisad was great as they talked about how some people don’t want to be penetrated or don’t see penetration as necessary for sexual intercourse. There is the possibility that YR might simply not want to be penetrated, but the author hasn’t really given any indication that this the case for him which makes me have doubts about it. Everything being said, the stereotypes or issues surfaced in MGLR might be influenced by the author’s own environment possibly? But I don’t want to assume especially since this story is her hard work embodied! ♥ Most importantly, we read our stories critically and discuss these things in the comments in a healthy manner which is nice

From my experiences, Yaoi (boy love) in Asian country are pretty …strict? about the “fixed” bottom/top position. I have almost never seen a couple that is written as “we could switch sometimes.”
Moreover, the bottoms are also most commonly described in a ‘feminine’ manner, to the point that they seem more like a girl in some….
oh yeah, i’ve seen more in eastern fandom that A x B is treated as an entirely different ship from B x A, only because of the positions (the top being listed first). and i think its even frowned upon to mix the two up. whereas in western spaces, i do see people have preferences, but there isn’t that same level of separation.

it can also be attributed to chinese culture? for example, the language has 3 verbs with the meaning of ‘marrying (someone)’; 娶 (qû) which is usually used by the male, with him ‘taking in’ a wife (into his family line). 嫁 (jià) usually used female, where they usually cut ties with their original families and enter their husband’s, and lastly, 结婚 (jié hūn) a neutral way of phrasing that someone got married, which is more recently adopted than the other 2. given how many families (in the past) view daughters as brides who are given to other families’ sons, it may be a pride thing. as the ‘shou’ is supposed to marry into the family of the ‘gong’ and as such, lose their pride as a son of a family?
tbh i have seen bl/yaoi written where the uke is more commanding, ie kinda a ‘superior (?)’ position, and mostly they were written very well. it’s very clear how the author thought it through. it all depends on the maturity of the author as well. however, i have to admit reversible/switches is not as common esp in chinese novels, maybe because it’s just easier for the author to describe? it may also be a stereotype due to heterosexual couples.

In original world Fan yuan was a movie king (that was told to the actor that followed him) or something but when he bound to his system he kinda lost most of his memories or they were in a jumble at least he forgot a lot and became a blank page, which is why he needed to start with low-level tasks while the other actor (the one that followed him Yu Kai I think but not sure) could directly have a roles on a higher plane.
Yan Rui or at least a part of him that was hidden in that person from the first world mentioned (the one in 1 chapted or prologue) feel in love with him which could be related to the original world or so at least that was the start of yan Rui following Fan Yuan as far as I understood
So it could have something to do with the original or just because of that world I dunno

The whole novel’s level of enjoyment is affected by this constant tension between them. And their whole relationship dynamic feels toxic af. Well, I guess as long as the people involved are happy?
Ya know. It kinda pisses me off when authors do this. So why cant a top who is supposedly completely in love bottom once in a while? Yeah, politics, personal pride, and honor sometimes get mixed up with semantics of who’s top and bottom.
