火眼金睛 or Fiery Eyes, Golden Pupils. You may have heard of this from Journey to the West. This is the pair of eyes that Sun Wukong possesses that can identify demons. It is later used to refer to eyes that can see through everything.

Okay so, I’ve no idea why but Butterfly Yan refers to Yun Sheng (the fan) as Mr. Banana even though earlier, the author uses female pronouns for her. Later on, Hua Ji will use male pronouns for her but it’s reasonable since the words for him/her/it in Chinese is pronounced exactly the same and he wouldn’t be able to tell her gender from speech alone.

Xi Shi is known as the most beautiful of the Four Beauties of China, the other three being Wang Zhaojun, Yang Guifei and Diaochan. Xi Shi supposedly had a heart disease so she was always clutching her heart, but because she was so beautiful, even the act of clutching her heart in pain looked attractive. An ugly girl, Dong Shi, saw this and thought that it was the act of clutching her heart in pain that made Xi Shi beautiful, so she copied her, but because she was so ugly, people were revolted and stayed away instead.

Being jealous in Chinese is known as “eating vinegar”, so a vinegar jug is someone who easily gets jealous.
