Chapter 98

Even though it was a standard room with two beds, the room wasn’t very big. FMk2ZV

So when the silence suddenly came, it quickly permeated into the very corners of the room.

Lin Yi could feel his heart pounding in his chest. The beating was so loud that it seemed like his heart was about to jump out his throat the very next second. He pursed his lips, quietly took a breath and changed the subject. “Senior, don’t you feel a little hot?”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

After saying so, Lin Yi made a gesture to indicate he was going to open the window to let in the wind outside.

Just as he a couple of steps, Lin Yi heard a question come from behind him. “Have you ever kissed anyone before?” ImAohJ

Lin Yi turned around, “Ah.”

How could it be a self-declaration otherwise?

Qin Zhou stared at him for a long time and then said, “But I only have your word to take for it. How would I know if you’ve kissed anyone before?”

Lin Yi: “…”

tLIx2A

Although he was wronged, he couldn’t immediately find a way to refute it. It was the truth. After all, he and Qin Zhou haven’t known each other for long and so Qin Zhou would have to take his word for it.

“O-…Okay.” Lin Yi didn’t expect that his courageous action would yield zero results. He lowered his eyes slightly, thinking of other ways to prove that he wasn’t the 4-4 Monster.

“I have a solution.” Qin Zhou piped in.

Lin Yi raised his eye and looked at Qin Zhou. vfFO3m

He actually had quite a lot of confidence in Qin Zhou. In the previous Rule Worlds, the methods Qin Zhou proposed at critical moments all worked.

So now Lin Yi looked at Qin Zhou expectantly, waiting for Qin Zhou to tell him the way to prove himself.

But Qin Zhou said nothing. Instead, he got in closer and closer. When Lin Yi simply couldn’t wait and opened his mouth to ask, he felt a warm hand on his shoulder blade.

While Lin Yi remained clueless as to what this had to do with his self-declaration, a big hand grabbed the back of his head and an inexplicable force pushed his head forward. dCL8fR

But the dizzier his mind became, the clearer his senses were. He could feel the shallow kiss, like dragonfly wings skimming the surface of the water. He could feel the rise in temperature. The shallow kiss fermenting in such temperatures until it finally became an in-depth exploration. E7vlZF

On his shoulder blade, the heat of Qin Zhou’s palm quickly passed through the fabric, even making his skin burn. His body was like something flammable, burning at a touch. His breaths turned scorching.

This was something that Lin Yi had never experienced.

He didn’t know how to react. He could only stare with eye wide open at the face that was so close to his.

He has always had a good and accurate grasp of time. But probably because his brain and breathing were all messed up, his sense of time had also become messed up. After an unknown amount of time, Qin Zhou finally let go. iPOhuB

But he didn’t distance himself from him immediately. Lin Yi heard a hoarse voice next to his ear, “Your self-declaration has passed.”

Lin Yi stared blankly at Qin Zhou, dumbfounded.

How did that pass?

This kiss had been a little deeper and a little longer than the previous one. And the two of them were a little closer. But there was no difference in any other aspect so why did this kiss pass… SNg9VU

He stared blankly at Qin Zhou. In his field of vision, Qin Zhou’s furrowed brows had smoothened. Qin Zhou tapped his forehead lightly and explained, “I believe you haven’t kissed anyone before.”

That was what Qin Zhou said.

Lin Yi lowered his head to adjust his erratic heartbeat.

After a while, he finally dared to raise his head again but he couldn’t look straight at Qin Zhou, focusing instead on some random point behind Qin Zhou. He asked, “Senior, why…why do you say that?” NDE6g4

Qin Zhou stopped his lips from curving up. He wasn’t about to admit that he’d had ulterior motives behind that stunt. He said in a business-like tone, “If you had kissed someone before, you wouldn’t have forgotten to breathe.”

Lin Yi: “… Ahhh.”

It turned out that not breathing had helped prove his innocence.

Qin Zhou added, “And you wouldn’t have kept your eyes open.” zHIhO0

Lin Yi: “…Oh.”

Lin Yi was stunned but he pretended to be calm and this was what finally made Qin Zhou unable to restrain himself from letting the corner of his lips rise. He tapped Lin Yi’s forehead again. “So your self-declaration has passed.”

Lin Yi reached out and touched his forehead. “Then… that’s good.”

Qin Zhou went to the window, pushed aside the curtains and opened them, letting the heat in the room escape. iFY9d4

Then he said, “So your alter ego, is there a problem with him?”

Lin Yi’s gaze followed Qin Zhou. He saw Qin Zhou smile and finally heaved a sigh of relief.

He was still quite afraid that Qin Zhou would still have that serious expression on his face; it was too grave. It was much better now and it sounded like Qin Zhou more or less believed his ‘multiple personality’ statement.

Now Lin Yi could tell Qin Zhou his conclusions with a little peace of mind. Fjc8gK

“Senior, I think there’s something wrong with ‘It’.” Lin Yi said, “According to my observation, the sub-personality will appear when I feel like I’m in danger. But ‘It’ hadn’t appeared at all in last night’s time rewind.”

Qin Zhou’s smile faded when he heard this and he muttered, “He’s…protecting you?”

“No.” Lin Yi never thought of ‘It’ protecting him. “It should be that ‘It’s’ protecting my body.”

After all, if something were happen to him, there would be no place for ‘It’ to reside. CswyJg

Lin Yi listed several occurrences of “It” to highlight the strangeness of ‘It’ not appearing this time.

He talked a lot but seeing Qin Zhou’s expression getting more and more serious, Lin Yi didn’t dare to say any more, for fear that Qin Zhou would catch the loopholes in his narratives.

“Senior?” Seeing that Qin Zhou hadn’t spoken, Lin Yi called Qin Zhou uneasily.

“Yeah.” Qin Zhou said, “I’m listening.” RLg9Zp

Lin Yi: “Oh, then…”

Qin Zhou suddenly said, “Did you…have a bad life before?”

The two spoke at the same time and Lin Yi, cut off, fell silent.

Multiple personality was a kind of psychological disorder. The way most people saw it, unless there is a history of genetic disease, mental illness must be related to one’s past experiences. F0drsx

Just like Doctor Zhu, who because of his messy childhood and tragic experiences afterwards made him schizophrenic.

So Qin Zhou too thought that Lin Yi’s condition must be because he’d suffered some kind of blow.

A spontaneous occurrence of multiple personality disorder really didn’t make much sense. Lin Yi gave a vague ‘en’. “Senior, my parents…they…they…”

Lin Yi tried many times, but he couldn’t say ‘they’re gone’. sbd1eX

Logically, Lin Yi knew very well that his parents were gone. He could just regard them as monsters who could not eat or drink. But in his heart, he was still unwilling to admit this fact.

It wasn’t that his parents were gone, they were just sick. And so he came to the Unnatural Engineering University to find the cause of his parents’ illness.

Qin Zhou saw Lin Yi’s expression and felt pain in his heart.

“Little genius.” He called softly. xaY2dC

Lin Yi looked up: “Huh?”

“Come.” Qin Zhou stretched out his arms. “Senior will give you a hug.”

  1. …Knowing more about DID really makes the loopholes in Lin Yi’s story glaringly obvious.

DID is caused by such extreme trauma up to the age of seven, often by caretakers, that it prevents the personality from completely forming. Imagine one of those glass windows in churches — they are made of many colorful pieces of glass, but each piece is separated from the others by metal, forming a whole with the individual pieces unable to touch, to fuse. A normal person has all their glass pieces fused into one messy but consistent whole, while people with DID have their individual pieces separated by metal, though some pieces may overcome the metal and fuse. The metal is a barrier between characteristics and most importantly memories, creating often unnoticeable gaps. In some cases, but rarely, all metal can be overcome and the person with DID can form one whole personality with all memories.TL;DR: Qin Zhou has little clue about Dissociative Identity Disorder, and obviously, neither does Lin Yi, and the author may also be a little lacking. But it’s fine, it’s fiction after all, and DID is complicated. It’s also incredibly depressing.

So on a happier note, I am very happy that Qin Zhou kissed Lin Yi, and I hope to see a loooong hug next chapter!

Thank you for the chapter, and hope you have a nice day! 🙂

    • Also, my knowledge of DID is shallow, and important ages to remember for the development of a child’s spiritual landscape are 3, 7, and 12. I forgot the specific reasons. And child amnesia (forgetting memories from childhood) is normal.

      …Just so you know.

      • Thank you for explaining so I don’t have to 🤣 though I don’t think there is a specific age that cuts off the possibility of developing DID, it does develop almost exclusively from childhood trauma. There’s a lot of complexity though and the amount of which personalities communicate with each other/share memories can vary as far as I’m aware. I’m not super knowledgeable about DID though, it’s very complex so there’s probs stuff both of us are missing.

This story has NOT been at all realistic in its portrayal of psychological conditions which I’ve accepted at this point but it still makes my eye twitch, especially when they keep making comparisons to schizophrenia while overlooking the strong genetic component there
