I See YouChapter 15

Editor: DarkSapphire, Uncia

In the middle of the third month, the glad tidings of Wen Yihong and Xu Shan receiving top marks in the imperial examinations spread throughout Huaihe City. They two even sent messengers to Yan Mansion to pass the good news. Wen Yihong came first while Xu Shan came second. They also expressed their regret that Yan Xixia couldn’t participate in the preliminary round of imperial examinations, otherwise their domination to the top three ranks would be the talk of the city.  BczfIl

In the afternoon, Yan Xixia and Xiao Lian sat in the courtyard and basked under the sun. Yan Xixia listened to Xiao Lian reading their own wedding invitation and smiled: “Just wait for three more years. Would the madam believe I can still win first place in the imperial civil service and the court examination?”

“Of course, I always believe in you.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Does the madam think I am too arrogant?”

“It is arrogant to be blindly self-confident despite having no talent—you are not.” wqptNy

Yan Xixia smiled and said: “Madam, I like you more and more.”

Xiao Lian looked at the bandage wrapped around Yan Xixia’s eyes. He stretched out his hand and gently touched it: “We can remove it in seven more days.”

Yan Xixia also stretched out his hand to touch the bandage around his eyes: “When I think about how soon I can see my wife, I think that the sun feels warmer.”

Xiao Lian never thought that they would get married, having only met each other a few times. Now, it has been half a year: “Do you still remember what I looked like?”

i9H 3y

Yan Xixia clenched his hand into a fist under his chin. He frowned and said with a distressed look: “I really can’t remember. What should I do if I can’t tell madam from a sea of people?”

Xiao Lian said solemnly: “Don’t worry, there are no strangers in the Yan Mansion. Doctor Bai and I are different sizes. You can tell which one is me. Besides, everyone’s voices are distinct. You just need to remember my voice.”

After listening to Xiao Lian, Yan Xixia stretched out his hand to hold Xiao Lian’s hand and chuckled: “It’s been half a year since you and I were married. Why is the madam still so pure?”

Xiao Lian let Yan Xixia caress his hand: “I believe in everything you tell me.” cqOltT

“Oh you—you really are a good boy just like your pet name, Xiao Guai.” Yan Xixia chuckled lightly: “How could I have forgotten my beloved wife’s appearance?”

The Jiyue House was a place where rich people go to gamble and seek entertainment. Yan Xixia picked up his teacup: “Gambling is a bottomless pit. If you don’t stop as soon as possible, you will squander your entire family’s fortune. If not now, then somewhere down the road.”

“He is just spoiled, and now the Xiao Family has to work very hard in order to prevent him from gambling.” eyOzfr

“A person like him would degenerate without being pushed by anyone.”

Even if Xiao Xin really squandered his family’s entire property in one day, Xiao Lian wouldn’t have the slightest sympathy for him: “Yes, if they don’t want him to go back to the Jiyue House, his mother will have to ruthlessly tie him to the house, otherwise he will definitely go back.”

“Let’s stop talking about this disappointing person.” Yan Xixia still remembered what Xiao Xin had done to Xiao Lian. Yan Xixia got up and pulled Xiao Lian: “Let’s go. Let me take you out and see something that will make you happy.”

Yan Xixia took Xiao Lian to a street in a carriage. When they got out of the carriage, Jiu Si also followed behind them with a box in his hands. There were shops on both sides of the long street. Xiao Lian knew that many of these shops belonged to the Xiao Family. Xiao Lian looked at Yan Xixia and wondered: “Why did you bring me here?” S DqCu

Yan Xixia didn’t answer right away, turning his head and telling Jiu Si to lead the way. Yan Xixia held Xiao Lian’s hand and said: “Follow Jiu Si.”

Xiao Lian squeezed Yan Xixia’s hand back and followed behind Jiu Si. The small servant took Xiao Lian around many empty shops. Only one doorman was watching all the shops, and there was no business in any of them. Each of them was bigger than Xiao Lian’s small embroidery workshop. He had some idea of what Yan Xixia had in store for him as he asked: “Are you giving me a shop?”

Please support our translators at chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Instead of answering, Yan Xixia questioned: “Why does the madam think so?”

“Every shop that Jiu Si brought us to is empty. Isn’t it for me to pick the most suitable one to buy? Moreover, when we went out, you said that you would take me to see something happy. That wouldn’t be as simple as showing me empty shops, right?” cynKs2

Yan Xixia smiled without saying a word. Xiao Lian looked at the smile on Yan Xixia’s face, fearing that he assumed wrong. Yan Xixia was indeed just showing him empty shops. It was that simple. So he added: “I am not asking you to buy me a shop. I was only guessing.”

Yan Xixia clasped Xiao Lian’s hand and interlocked their fingers: “If madam would ask for it from me, I will definitely buy it.”

Yan Xixia took Xiao Lian and sat in a shop: “This is the last shop we will see today.”

Xiao Lian sat next to Yan Xixia while Jiu Si handed Yan Xixia the box he was holding. Afterward, he withdrew and stood by the door. Yan Xixia put the box on the table and asked: “Madam, did you count how many shops we have seen?” 8eiZd5

Xiao Lian didn’t. He tried to remember how many and gave an estimate: “About twenty?”

“Nineteen actually.”

“Really?”

“Madam, please open the box and take a look.” Yan Xixia handed the box to Xiao Lian. 1qWUSz

Xiao Lian opened the box. Inside were sheets of property deeds. All of them were under Xiao Lian’s name. The hands that were holding the deeds were trembling. Yan Xixia seemed to feel Xiao Lian’s emotions and hugged Xiao Lian into his arms. He kissed Xiao Lian’s forehead: “Of these nineteen shops, sixteen of them were bought from Xiao Xin, anonymously of course. I wanted to give them to you on a special day. When I heard Xiao Lian’s father gave him sixteen shops on his sixteenth birthday, I bought three more shops. My plan was to give you a surprise when you turned nineteen years old, but when Xiao Xin was mentioned today, I suddenly felt that I should make you happier. The sooner the better. I don’t care about not giving it to you on your special day. Xiao Guai, you will always have me in the future.”

Xiao Lian stretched out his hand to hug Yan Xixia’s waist. He didn’t reply and just hugged Yan Xixia quietly. Yan Xixia did not speak as he stroked Xiao Lian’s back with his hand from time to time until the sky darkened. Then, they returned to their home.

Seven days later, when Yan Xixia’s bandages were coming off, not only were the Yan Family members present but also Wen Yihong and Xu Shan. Everyone gathered around Yan Xixia and waited for Bai Zhu to untie the bandages. Xiao Lian was squeezed to the outside of the circle. He also wanted to be the first one Yan Xixia saw but compared to Yan Xixia’s family and friends, he knew Yan Xixia for the shortest time. He also thought that the person who would spend the most time with Yan Xixia in the future was also him, so he was not in a hurry.

Xiao Lian thought for a moment, and walked to Bai Tu’s side: “I’ll go back to the room first. Could you let him know to come find me once he is free?” r7PzCt

Bai Tu was also standing outside of the circle, looking at Yan Xixia on tiptoe. Bai Zhu was explaining to Yan Xixia the precautions for after removing the bandage. Bai Tu turned his head and said to Xiao Lian: “You are no-not staying h-here?”

Xiao Lian shook his head and chuckled: “No need. I think his family and friends care about him as much as I do. They must have a lot of things they want to say. I will inevitably distract him, and also, he will be able to talk with me more in the future. I don’t need to care about this moment.”

Bai Tu nodded and promised. Xiao Lian turned around and went back to the room.

When Yan Xixia opened his eyes, he saw a clear picture around him. Despite the surrounding ordinariness, under a new light, he couldn’t help himself from tearing up. Family and friends raised questions one after another: “Can you see?” “Does it hurt?” “Is there any blur?” U Yd8O

Yan Xixia also answered them one by one. He saw that Xiao Lian was not around him, intuitively knowing Xiao Lian would prioritize others first. He didn’t bring it up. He focused on responding intently to the concerns of family and friends. After Bai Zhu did an inspection and test, which resulted in no major issues, Bai Tu told Yan Xixia that Xiao Lian was waiting for him in their room, and Yan Xixia returned to their yard.

When Yan Xixia opened the door, he didn’t expect to see a scene like this. Xiao Lian was dressed in the red wedding suit, his complexion turned red, and the suit outlined his beautiful figure. Yan Xixia thought about the last time he saw Xiao Lian when Xiao Lian was still hiding on the path to the examination, so Yan Xixia repeated what he said on that day: “Come out, I see you.” Time between the same phrases passed in an instant.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Yan Xixia looked at Xiao Lian, who was wearing the wedding suit in a daze, thinking that he was here to fetch his bride. He smiled gently and politely and stretched out his hand: “I finally see you again, my wife.”

After Xiao Lian returned to the room, he wanted to tidy up his appearance to give Yan Xixia the best impression, but when he opened the closet, he found the customized wedding suit. Xiao Lian thought about their wedding day and how he wasn’t who Yan Xixia thought he was. So, being slightly selfish and with some embarrassment, he put the outfit on. He stood at the door waiting for Yan Xixia, just like the day he got married. When Yan Xixia opened the door, he saw Yan Xixia’s handsome brows and how those eyes were filled with light and soul again, himself reflected in them. rAaEeL

Xiao Lian watched Yan Xixia stretch out his hand just like the day of their wedding, but Xiao Lian didn’t reach out to hold it. Instead, he threw himself on Yan Xixia. He wrapped his hands around Yan Xixia’s neck, and Yan Xixia hugged him back tightly. The two of them hugged each other tightly and gently shook their bodies like  children who had reunited after a long time.

Yan Xixia let go of Xiao Lian, reached out his hand to close the door, and inserted the door bolt. He turned around and picked Xiao Lian back up. This time, instead of relying on the number of steps, he could see the bed clearly. He walked toward it and laid Xiao Lian down. Xiao Lian’s long hair cascaded like a waterfall and his eyelashes trembled, but he did not close his eyes and looked straight at Yan Xixia. Yan Xixia lowered his head and kissed Xiao Lian’s lips, not as gentle and polite as usual, but with force and some bites. The kiss slowly turned gentle before they separated from each other, leaving a bright red mark on Xiao Lian’s lip. With a trembling voice, Xiao Lian said: “It’s still daytime.”

Yan Xixia raised his head and looked Xiao Lian in the eyes affectionately. He stretched out his hand to brush the loose hair on Xiao Lian’s forehead and laughed in a low voice: “I thought my wife was wearing the wedding suit to invite me to the bridal room.”

Yan Xixia bowed his head and pecked Xiao Lian’s lips: “Indulging in lascivious acts in broad daylight is because of true love.” zcwpOD

Three years later, Yan Xixia took part in the examinations as a candidate. This time, he scored first place in two of the three examinations in succession. If you count his first-placed candidate in the provincial imperial examination from three years ago, it meant he scored all three examinations in first place.

Everyone thought that the new top scorer would marry a virtuous woman from a scholarly family or have a concubine to pass down the family name, but Yan Xixia and Xiao Lian were not affected by the outside world at all and still loved each other as much as before.

Perhaps Xiao Lian was influenced by the Xiao Family when he was young because he was quite talented in business. Now when people in the Huaihe City talked about the Xiao Family, they meant Xiao Lian.

Xiao Lian sold his small embroidery workshop. He bid it farewell, like his farewell with the Xiao Family. All the silver earned from his workshop went to Yan Xixia, and he only kept the nineteen shops. Originally, Yan Xixia didn’t agree with Xiao Lian doing this, but he understood that as far as Xiao Lian was concerned, the nineteen shops meant more to him, so he did not oppose Xiao Lian’s decision. 0NdfIL

Xiao Lian also stopped selling his own embroidery and only picked up embroidery needles for Yan Xixia and him alone.

The Group has something to add:

Teo: Thanks everyone for reading. Let me know in detail about the flow and the translation of this project. I am still getting used to memsource, but I don’t like how some quotation marks would disappear. I do like the term database and it auto completes words.

The bane of my existence in this project: smiled and said (I can only translate it into so many variation…), and 嗯 (I refuse to use ‘okay’) IPZ0 d

Uncia: It feels great to actually contribute something (even though it’s a really short piece) to CG after lurking for so long. I hope everyone liked this novel and I apologize for any mistakes that I missed during editing. There was some intent to retain the historical “sound” of the speech though, so it might’ve made it sound a touch awkward.

嗯. En.

Dark: Thank you for reading!

Afterthoughts: VitaB, unicorn squad, sapphirelucy, Barbara, and all other Ko-fi and anonymous supporters, thank you so much for the ko-fi! vFwqmB

  1. Thank you for your hard work!

This story is so fluffy that reading it soothed me somehow. The deep trust of the couple helped them reach happiness much faster.

  2. I can’t believe it’s finished! I’m so thankful to all the translators who did a great job! Even though this journey is short, it’s still very very sweet. See you again in another translation ne~ m(o・ω・o)m

  3. Thank you for your hard work to translate and share this story to us ne~

    Congratulations on finishing la~ (˘︶˘).。*♡

  4. What a sweet short story :3 Thank you guys for your hard work (シ_ _)シ For me it was easy to read and understandable, and I’m in for ‘En’ instead of ‘Okay’ too xDD I tried to read a few MTL “translations” before but they were still just some gibberish and full of grammatical errors even with an editor (and I’m not even a native and still think that my English sucks orz), so you guys did a good job :3 *gives out a round of cookies*

    • Nom on the old cookies, I hope I don’t get stomach ache :3c Thank you!! MTL translating is pretty hard and does require a good proficiency in English to compensate the lack of Chinese knowledge. But with enough hard work (and love) puts into the projects, it could result in great translation even with only the help of translating resources.

  5. Thank you for translating this story!!! It was so fluffy and sweet.. Such a cute couple~

You also did a good job with the translation 👍

  6. The End

  8. The Purest… The Most Heartwarming… The Most Loving… Novel… And Couple… EVER!!!

THE ABSOLUTE FCKING BEST TENDER GENTLE LOVE STORY EVER!!!

THANK YOU SO EFFING MUCH FOR THE HARDWORK OF TRANSLATED THIS PERFECT LOVE STORY NOVEL EVER!!! 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇

    I WANT TO CRY!!!

  9. This short story is like a cup of tea in the morning. So flavorful and made me at peace.

After getting numbed from all those dogblood feuds, illogical villains, dramatic plots, this short slice of life novel to me feels like the moment you come home after a tiring day and you finally get to bed.

Like, my hackles were raised; I was still vigilant from the junk novels I consume, so I was like, “Huh, she actually asked for forgiveness?” (Pertaining to Zimian) and the character personalities are solid and answerable by why they do their actions.

Just like tea, I want another serving of this. I really love the flow of the story and I hope to read more novels from this author (if there are) and novels witg actually good world and character development.

As always, CG never disappoints. Thank you for translating this story!

  10. I thought the flow sounded quite good! And the content was great too, they’re so cute, my face hurts from smiling so much… They’re so happy and trusting and in love, my heart is warm. I just want all the best for them, they’re so darling. Definitely the kind of story I’ll want to reread when the world is too much

Thank you so much for translating! <3

It was a really peaceful read, thank you.

  13. It’s romantic but I can’t feel the fluff between them 😂 maybe bcs ML is too polite to him. Anyway it’s a short story so I don’t expect anything 😅 Thank you for translating! ❤

Just the right amount of fluff to soothe an angst ridden BL novel soul. 😁

  17. Hi, Teo! Thank you so much for translating this novel for us! I really like your translating style, it’s very clear, easy, and fun to read. I really enjoy my read since chapter 1 until the end! Hehe

And, may I ask you something? I’m very sorry if the question is bothering you, but could I ask for your permission to re-translate this book into my language, as we speak, into Indonesian language and post it on Wattpad? It’s okay if you mind though, I won’t insist. But if you’re happen to give me the permission, I’ll surely link my translation for you to see.

    • Hello there. Thank you so much for your sincere message, but I’m sorry, I’m not open to retranslation of my work due to how each person interprets things differently. I also can’t promise that my fan translations are 100% accurate. Thank you so much for reading.

  18. I found a hidden gem wuwu~

Thank you author, translators and editors for sharing this novel.

I really wish it to be longer. It is so sweet and fluffy. The trust and love between main characters brought tears to my eyes.Really sweet wuwu~

  19. this is so short and sweet, the lack of angst is really nice too, as i am someone who normally prefers heavy angst like in erha. thank you so much for translating <3

    • Thank you so much for reading and also for catching bugs for me (In Chinese novel, typo are commonly called bugs (I guess like bugs in the codes), so people would comment like ‘catching bugs for author’, etc.)! I totally agree, I’m need to translate a sweet story along side an angst story because I needed them to balance each other out. Sadly, most of my angst stories are hosted at another place while CG gets all of my sweet desserts (❁´◡`❁)

    thanks for your hard work.

  25. This story is really beautiful, thank you for bringing this maater piece to us dear translator. ❤️❤️ I wish there was more to read tho. haha, I will miss it.

  27. Thank you so much for this wonderful work of art. It is such a lovely story and I’m sure it’s one I’ll be returning to often. The love and devotion is so heart warming. The translation was excellent.

  28. Such a heartwarming and sweet novel. Thank you so much for translating it and bringing it to us. The flow of the translation is great and it doesn’t feel awkward at all.

  29. Such a short but heartwarming novel! I teared up bcs I didn’t expect XL to wear his wedding gown again for this moment. YX also repeat what he said when XL wanted to give him handkerchief :’)

    Thanks for the translation!

  30. I think the translation came out really well. The only thing I would have liked is a translator’s note about some of the less translatable phrases. Specifically:

    Ceshi/Cefuren 侧室/侧夫人

    Shuzi 庶子

    Gefu 哥夫

    Furen 夫人

    Fujun 夫君

I always feel that titles lose a lot of the original flavor in translation. Although they may be translated the same way, there’s a difference between 夫君 and 相公. Shuzi is also not quite right since English has only two levels of legitimacy, while Chinese has three. Di children born to the primary wife, shu children born to concubines, and then “wild children” born to women outside the home.

    • Good argument. IMO, this is mostly personal preference as once you start using dozen or so pinyin for address, readers began to get confuse unless you have an index, especially those you do not see often in translations (gongzi, furen, etc). As someone without a pinyin background (I can do ㄅㄆㄇㄈ 🙃), I cannot remember all of them on top of my head and it also introduces typo because google doc doesn’t allow plugin anymore so I cannot use extension to check pinyin right there and then (cannot go back to memesource since they no longer have free service). I also shy away from historical novel unless I can read it in Chinese. So I do not have as much experience as other historical translator, sadly 😔
      • As someone learning Chinese I have a preference for more Chinese phrases, but I totally understand readers getting confused. What I’ve seen other translators do is just include pinyin for titles, since those are both the least translatable and the easiest to learn (readers can just treat it like a name). This is probably only useful for readers who read a lot of historical novels, though, since like you said, most readers will just be confused by the Chinese. The other option is to translate it in the story (like you did) and put the original in the footnote.

That said, translation takes a lot of work, so I appreciate the work without the footnotes too!

  31. Ahhh! This is sooo great! I kindda want more ~ the cri cri and sweet sweet is enough… Kindda want morreee.

I’m having a hard to finish a novel this past few days… I dropped 2-3 novels already… A readers block probably? Idk… But thanks to this, I want more novel like thiiis :’)

  32. thank you so much for the translations❤️ it was a cute short story.

as expected, there’s not much detail, but i’m quite satisfied with the ending of our couple.

and i’ll say again, i really, really love how yan xixia speaks with his wife. and the way he calls him madam. ah, i really feel the nuance of ancient china 😌❤️

  33. One of the best stories to read in one sitting! Thank you so much. Although I’m late in reading this, I certainly loved this novel with all my heart. They exude the gentle manliness that I yearn for while reading <3

  34. What a lovely sweet story. I love their relationship, they have those healthy and understanding about each other and I’d love to see that after reading a dog blood drama. The trust they had is so envious I enjoyed this short story. Thank you for this. <3

  35. Hi, I would like to know if I can translate to Brazilian Portuguese and post it on wattpad? With all credits, of course. It would be my first translation and my English might not be good enough, which is exactly why I try to translate something short. Please talk to me about any terms you have.

    • Hello there. Thank you so much for reaching out. Unfortunately, I’m not open to retranslation of my work due to how each person interprets things differently. I also can’t promise that my fan translations are 100% accurate. I hope you understand and thanks again 🐢

  36. Thanks for translating this story with its sweet main characters and their surprising and noteworthy new friends. The writing was simple, evocative and clear – as I assume it was in its original form.

  37. That was very nice, sweet novel~ I feel so warm in my heart right now and I’m super happy about that! I love our characters and their dynamics, they were well written (⋈◍>◡<◍)。✧♡ The plot was interesting even without twists or spectacular actions o(〃^▽^〃)o It was beautiful to see that being a good person making the world around you a better place and all the good things you give or do will come back to you in the future ༼ ༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ༽ It was a lovely message of this novel. Thank You sooooo much for Your wonderful work and sharing this cute title with us! ♡ฅ(ᐤˊ꒳ฅˋᐤ)Take care~❤
