a dream within waterCh100 - the curious case of Beihua Town

To say there was pain was an understatement.

For several hours, Gui Yin felt as if the upper half of his bicep was being drenched in boiling oil before it was doused in ice cold water. During the entire process, Gui Yin felt his vision going in and out. He could still move properly and he wasn’t to the point of fainting, but even the thought of what Langxia could possibly be going through at this moment caused Gui Yin to psychologically wretch. Eg1i07

When the entire ordeal had finished, Gui Yin had to change out of his clothes. He had sweat through them and couldn’t be forced to wear them for the rest of the day.

Gui Yin laid on the ground as his chest heaved. He rubbed his right arm and trembled.

He really hoped Langxia wouldn’t lose his arm again.

He pressed a hand to his chest and took a few deep breaths. After the pain subsided, he began to feel worried. Was Langxia okay? How high was his pain tolerance? Gui Yin considered himself to have quite the pain tolerance, but even then, he had begun sweating. Was Langxia dealing with it fine? dOVRiS

Gui Yin dragged himself up and went outside. He blew the whistle that would summon Langxia’s attendants at a moment’s notice and waited patiently for Wu Feng to show up.

“Lord Ninglan.”

“Can you go back to Huigu Palace and check on your master for me?” Gui Yin asked.

Wu Feng showed a surprised expression. A moment later, he nodded and disappeared again.

Wu Feng didn’t return for half a day.

When he did, Gui Yin had already prepared dinner for the both of them, leaving him a bit speechless. He was forced to sit down and eat before he could begin talking, much to his confusion. Once he had finished the noodles, he softly cleared his throat.

“Master says he’s fine. He says that he will be joining Lord Ninglan again in a few days.”

“But what did Lord Xun say?” Gui Yin asked. 4fTFdq

Wu Feng felt that Gui Yin really understood his master. “Lord Xun said that Master should rest for three more weeks. The arm has yet to settle completely, so it would be dangerous to do any strenuous activity with it. Even if he doesn’t fully use it, he shouldn’t be traveling with it.”

Gui Yin nodded in understanding. “Then, you can go tell your master that he better listen to the doctor, or I won’t let him into my Shuangye Peak even if he comes.”

“Yes, Lord Ninglan.”

“Ah, before you go.” Z0XQid

Wu Feng looked at him questioningly.

“Is Shan Yu’s side okay?”

“Yes. She has calmed down since Lord Immortal left. She is handling everything well now,” Wu Feng said. “She seems a bit happier too.”

“Happier?” Gui Yin raised a brow. mnvOcQ

Wu Feng nodded. “I believe it has something to do with Miss Qin. But I’m not sure what.”

Gui Yin stared into blank space for a while before slowly nodding. “I think I can guess. Thank you. You may go now. You don’t have to come back here, just directly go back to Zhengyang after you’re finished delivering the message.”

Wu Feng bowed and quickly disappeared again.

Gui Yin scoffed as he took the dishes to be washed. 4U1ClN

“You can’t even be useful to me if you’re still injured,” Gui Yin mumbled. “Just stay in your nest.”

Although he said this, he knew that his words would not reach Langxia. Not only that, but the worry he felt would reach him instead.

Another month flew by in a flash.

Lin Cangyuan’s wheelchair was finished. Now, he could go up and down stairs without experiencing a bump. Although it didn’t have “lethality” covered just yet, it was a perfectly fashionable, functional, and comfortable wheelchair. KLA6wb

Gui Yin patted it happily and was about to take it to go see Ye Liuxing and Jiu Jingyi, only to be met at the door with Jiu Jingyi’s irritable expression.

“Who angered you, Shimei? Do you want Shixiong to beat them up?” Gui Yin asked.

Jiu Jingyi pouted. “Shixiong, I need you to do me a favor.”

Gui Yin raised a brow as he fiddled with the compressed wheelchair in his hand. “What favor?” z2hMsY

“Can you go check on Beihua Town?”

“Beihua Town? Why?” Gui Yin asked.

“It’s supposed to be our turn to check up on the Ghost Barrier, but I have a banquet to go to. Ye-shidi is still busy with harvests,” Jiu Jingyi’s voice trailed off. She looked at Gui Yin meaningfully. “Or, you can go to the banquet and I can—”

“I’ll go to Beihua Town. When do I have to leave? Now?” yB8Szc

“You can also leave tomorrow,” Jiu Jingyi said. There was clear guilt on her face that made Gui Yin chuckle.

He rubbed her head. “Don’t pull that face. I was just getting bored staying all cooped up in the sect. This is a perfect opportunity for me to stretch out my legs! Besides, it’s just checking on the Ghost Barrier, right? It can’t be that hard.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say that,” Jiu Jingyi said. “You have to be careful. Beihua Town isn’t as peaceful as it used to be. It’s long been abandoned and resentful energy has polluted the area. There’s going to be a guide with you, but it’s best if you don’t linger for too long.”

Gui Yin nodded in understanding. “Duly noted.” 0dRibM

Jiu Jingyi pursed her lips worriedly. “You really have to be careful. I heard the monsters over there have also mutated.”

“I understand, I understand,” Gui Yin said. He smiled and held up the square in his hands before he guided Jiu Jingyi down the stairs of his peak. “Forget about that for now. Let’s find Ye-shidi and I’ll show you two Lin-shixiong’s near completed wheelchair!”

The beautiful spring-like weather was left behind. What Gui Yin was left with was a boiling sensation that made him feel as if he were getting closer to the center of the earth. He breathed a deep breath and, with a snap of his fingers, changed into a more breathable material.

His brows furrowed and he went to seek out the so-called guide.

He had landed not too far from Beihua Town.

According to the letter that had been sent to Jiu Jingyi, there would be a young woman waiting for him around the front of the town. But no matter where he walked, he couldn’t find the woman anywhere. JNzcVT

It wasn’t until his patience had been fried dry by the burning sun did he see a woman approaching him with a surprised expression.

Her steps quickened and she fell into a bowing position. “Lord Ninglan!”

The speed at which Gui Yin fanned himself slowed as a tight smile decorated his lips. “Hello.”

“T-This—you—” 32HEGq

Gui Yin waited for the shock to pass before he spoke. “Your name is…?”

“Chen Yin, Sir!”

“Cultivator Chen,” Gui Yin greeted. “I take it that you’re my guide?”

“Y-Yes, Sir! Um…right—right this way.” BXQqri

The cultivator glanced at Gui Yin nervously as a cold sweat ran down her back. Her gaze flickered down to Gui Yin’s feet and she breathed a sigh of relief when she saw his shadow trailing after him.

It had been half a decade since the war had ended, but the pollution around this barrier hadn’t gotten any better, leading to illusions that would crop up randomly outside or even within the confines of Beihua Town. If it weren’t for the stone lions that were placed to hold down the purifying matrix, the accompanying cultivator feared that the entire lower realm would have already been affected by the thick resentment that had built up.

However, it was still all very strange. In most cases of contamination, a purifying matrix would help the pollution settle in a few years. The only cases where a purifying matrix wouldn’t help would be places like Ghost Valley or Yinfeng Valley, where the harsh battlefields had been left to fester for thousands of years.

Despite the fact that Beihua Town had been dealt with swiftly, the skies in the area had already turned an odd purple—reflecting the skies past the Ghost Barrier. d nwRE

With the accumulation of resentful energy, low-level demons and fierce ghosts had become drawn to this area. Although they were too weak to break the matrix, they caused trouble with the towns in the surrounding areas. The cultivators of the lower realm could barely keep them back. It was beginning to get out of hand, which was why the Beidou Alliance began to request annual checkups from cultivators of the Upper Realm.

Gui Yin listened to the cultivator’s explanation and his eyes thinned.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Annual checkups would do nothing other than put tape over an already gaping hole. If unfavorable creatures were still showing up despite there being a purifying matrix, that meant that there was something severely wrong with Beihua Town as a whole.

Gui Yin’s silence caused the cultivator to glance over nervously. v6D1k3

The man before her was dressed in soft, peach garments with silver embroidery along his chest and the ends of his sleeve. His hair was pulled up halfway by a silvery crown and his signature folding fan rested against his chest. The turquoise tassel that hung from it was lovely, but the man himself was even more eye-catching. The cultivation world had many good-looking people, but Lord Immortal Ninglan was a different kind of beauty.

“I can enter at will, yes?” Gui Yin asked, turning his attention to the cultivator.

The young woman nodded. Her face flushed from having been caught staring. “Y-yes! With Lord Immortal’s level of cultivation, this level of resentful energy won’t harm you.”

“Alright. You head back first.” XdpJ2w

The cultivator hesitated. “But I was told I need to guide you…”

“There is no need,” Gui Yin said. “You’ve already explained everything to me. What I need to do next is quite dangerous. It would pain me if my own recklessness harmed you.”

The young woman’s face flushed. Her eyes flickered one way to the other before she finally agreed. “Then, please be careful, Lord Immortal. If the inspection takes longer than a few days, there is an inn in the town over that is already reserved under the Beidou Alliance’s name. Please feel free to use it.”

Gui Yin nodded graciously and watched the young woman leave before he turned back to the town in front of him. He let out a soft, pitying sigh. 7P8TxG

A perfectly good town was torn to this state.

The stores and homes of this small town were made of sturdy and high-quality material, but after the final battle, the buildings were all half-smashed in. Blood of old residents stained the grounds and walls of buildings. No one had bothered to clean up after realizing the horrendous state of things. Even the sign that read “Beihua Town” was left to dangle from the gate

Gui Yin stepped towards the stone lion matrixes and frowned. He pressed a hand to it and guided his spiritual energy to figure out its inner workings.

It was indeed a purifying matrix. He couldn’t find anything wrong with it. ptu26Q

So, if the problem wasn’t without, then was it within?

Gui Yin glanced at the sky. It was still high noon, but when it grew darker, the demons and ghosts would surely become more active. His gaze flickered towards the entrance. He made his way over and experimentally placed his hand against the shimmering barrier.

Like an object touching still water, the barrier rippled. Reality seemed to bend in that moment as the barrier shifted, allowing Gui Yin to step in.

The world within the matrix was far different from the world he had just left behind. eOb7MK

Gui Yin hesitated for a moment and turned around. He placed a hand against the matrix again and found that he could still leave. The unsettled feeling left for a fleeting moment, but he still had his doubts about this area.

He turned around again and observed his surroundings.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

The air was visible. A cast of redness floated around him and the soft, blue skies had turned purple. The sun seemed to be stronger and larger, yet dimmer at the same time. Although it had clearly been scorching and humid just a few seconds ago, within the matrix, Gui Yin suddenly felt like he had been transported to the opposite end of the globe. He let out a soft breath and watched as the white fog curled in front of his eyes.

Gui Yin closed his eyes and sent his spiritual sense outwards to scan for any immediate abnormalities. When he opened them again, doubt filled his gaze. vxYd0t

In a completely abnormal setting, there was actually nothing that rang an alarm.

He uneasily left the entrance and began to walk through the ghost town.

His eyes glazed over the leftover blood stains on the ground and the walls of the demolished buildings. He let out a soft sigh through his nose as he walked past a building that used to be Ye Liuxing’s clinic. As he walked through the dilapidated town, he couldn’t help but wonder what happened to its old residence. Surely, they had been rehoused, right? Although the Ghost Barrier had been repaired, this area had been completely contaminated. Even if they wanted to live here again, there was absolutely no way.

Gui Yin stopped at the town center and closed his eyes again. EMhJPj

A minute later, his lashes fluttered open, revealing a perplexed gaze. His brows furrowed and he picked a random direction to walk towards. He opened the door to one of the homes and stepped back in surprise when a flock of birds flew towards his face. He watched them escape, but there was something odd about their flight pattern.

If you ran up to a flock of birds, they would normally scatter in random directions. These birds, however, flew directly out at Gui Yin, and then wove around him for the forest.

Gui Yin looked around the house quickly to see if there were any other clues. He stepped out and carefully closed the door, so as to shake the foundation of the building further, and headed towards the forest, where the barrier was located.

Similar to the dilapidated state the town was in, the trees in this area had withered and become gnarled, as if all the water had been taken from them. The trees still carried leaves, but the tops of the leaves and the side that faced the barrier were singed and burnt. The forest was devoid of any life, but there was still the eerie feeling of being watched from the shadows. 7LtlqH

Gui Yin’s eyes narrowed. He even walked over to a nearby bush and gave it a good shake, but nothing came from it.

Gui Yin glanced at the sky and proceeded forward…and forward…and forward…

Gui Yin paused.

He turned around and saw the town further away, but when he looked forward, he realized he didn’t see the shimmering barrier. A chill went down his spine. He turned around, but before he could take one more step, the sound of a suona pierced the sky, followed by a raspy “Sundoowwwnnn!” eRlsVu

Gui Yin looked up at the sky. The odd, purplish sky had begun taking other various colors of magenta and blue. The sun, which should have been descending slowly, was rapidly falling. Before he could even register what had happened, the chill in the air grew heavier and strange, translucent beings began to emerge from the shadow.

Gui Yin immediately held his breath.

“Say, when I got up to take a piss earlier, I saw a human wandering close to the border,” one of the figures said. “I’m surprised how fast he got out.”

“Right? Maybe he had sharp instincts. I couldn’t tell what kinda person he was, but if he was dressed up like that, he was probably a cultivator right?” another figure commented. ulGogV

Although Gui Yin could hear their conversation, the words they spoke were extremely garbled, as if they were underwater and Gui Yin was listening from above.

As the two figures walked past Gui Yin, Gui Yin slowly reached into his sleeve and pulled out a jade bottle. He unscrewed the bottle cap and popped one of the pills in.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

For a split second, the figures paused. They turned around and looked straight at Gui Yin. One even moved closer until it was a centimeter from Gui Yin. Gui Yin didn’t dare breathe normally, nor did he dare to even blink, until the figure moved back.

“How strange. I thought I sensed a human.” PGdv8n

“You’re probably just paranoid from that guy earlier,” their friend said, letting out a laugh.

Gui Yin let out a steady breath as soon as the ghosts departed.

He looked down at the jade bottle in his hand and sent a big thanks to Jiu Jingyi. The woman always stuffed him with odd pills that she had refined during her experimentations. This was one of those that most sane people would not need to use—a Breath Vanishing Pill. Luckily, Gui Yin was also the type of person to hoard what he didn’t need. It was a habit he developed from fiddling with machines for so long. You never knew when an insignificant part would come in handy.

Gui Yin tucked the pill bottle back into his sleeve and looked around. He had to leave quickly before the skies darkened further. According to what Jiu Jingyi told him, this type of pill only worked for half an hour. He had ten pills and just took one, meaning he had four and a half hours left before he would get caught. NZuA7a

Gui Yin wasn’t scared about being swarmed by ghosts, but as he observed his surroundings, he became more and more sure of where he was.

He had accidentally bypassed the barrier and wandered into the Ghost Realm. If he was caught in the Ghost Realm as a living human, then he would be trapped here. Even with his impressive cultivation, there was little he could do to escape.

Those were the laws of the Ghost Realm, after all.

Gui Yin’s steps quickened. He could just barely ignore the way he phased through the beings that became more solid by the second. He felt a chill that touched his heart and seeped through his bones. He pushed down the panic that was beginning to rise in his heart and walked through calmly, trying his best to draw as little air as possible. w8X He

Soon, Gui Yin made it back into a more familiar part of the woods. He began to run.

By the time he made it to the entrance of Beihua Town, it had already become night. The sky was an off-shade of violet, with orange clouds smeared across the surface. The moon didn’t have a warm glow to it but was, instead, a strange pale green.

Gui Yin walked towards the gates, eager to leave this ghostly place, but when he walked through, he found himself looking at the dilapidated Beihua Town again.

Gui Yin froze. He turned around. 0inzes

Behind him was Beihua Town, but in front of him was also the identical town.

Gui Yin hesitated for a brief second before taking a step back. In front of him, the image shuddered and shook, like the surface of the water had just been touched. A moment later, the scene of a forest reappeared. This was clearly the exit.

He stepped in again. But he was back in the town.

Gui Yin repeated his process several times, his heart hammering against his chest harder and harder. He couldn’t believe it. Was he trapped? Had he stepped into an array without realizing it? CmLO1e

Gui Yin took one last step back into Beihua Town and began to rummage through the dilapidated buildings.

There were no odd markings, no signs of residual spiritual energy, nothing demonic and nothing resentful aside from what clung to the air. He even went as far as to crawl on the ground, his face pressed against the dirt as he tried to find any signs of a hidden array.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

After what felt like two hours, Gui Yin sat back. He rubbed the dirt from his face and looked back towards where the barrier should have been.

There was a ridiculous idea forming in his brain, but if it were true, then this little inspection job Gui Yin took on would require a lot more work. Y wLyF

He let out a long sigh. Fenghua was abandoned to the side as he leaned back against the building behind him. His legs were folded as he rubbed his eyes with the heel of his palm. He removed his hands and looked up at the sickly green moon, a sense of dread and annoyance taking over him. He took a deep breath and began to slowly sort through his thoughts.

The reason resentful energy had not dissipated and was growing instead wasn’t because there was anything wrong with the matrix or even the barrier. It was because the Ghost Realm had found a way to merge with the Mortal Realm. Instead of being a clear border now, it became an instance where humans could just wander into the Ghost Realm without any rhyme or reason. The only reason there hadn’t been any reported cases was because Beihua Town was off limits to most cultivators, let alone humans. Beihua Town was the only accessible portal way into the Ghost Realm, but it wasn’t until a person approached the barrier that space and time would be thrown off.

As for why the ghosts hadn’t wandered into Beihua Town, Gui Yin had yet to figure out a reason.

“Maybe…” Gui Yin murmured to himself. fKkmj7

He looked up to the distance and saw a shimmer of the golden barrier. Was it because the barrier was still intact?

Gui Yin frowned, his brows furrowed tightly. After another few minutes he sighed and pinched the back of his neck.

If Langxia was here he would definitely be able to think of something. Gui Yin shook himself. He couldn’t afford to daydream right now. He had an odd sense that he was forgetting something. Something else was making him anxious.

Being trapped in this purgatory-like space and being swallowed by the Ghost Realm was pressing, but it shouldn’t rile him up in this way. Something in the back of his mind was telling him that if he didn’t hurry up and find a way out, he would be in worse trouble than before. t9oMek

“What am I forgetting?” Gui Yin murmured. He chewed at his lower lip. The reason was on the tip of his tongue. “Month…? The date…?…The month…It’s the seventh month.”

Gui Yin stood. He looked back towards the forest and wanted to punch the Beidou Alliance in the face. Were they crazy?! How could they decide to send people out to investigate the barrier of the Ghost Realm now?

The seventh month was aptly nicknamed the “Ghost Month”. On the fifteenth day, the doors to the Ghost Realm would open, letting the residents within visit their families and enjoy the human realm for the night. It was when paranormal activity would be the most rampant. Fierce ghosts would take this time to wreak havoc and people are warned not to venture out too late at night, for fear of wandering into the Underworld.

He took a deep breath and tried to calm himself back down. lsaB8j

“Fifteenth day of the seventh month,” Gui Yin murmured. “It’s the second. There’s no way I can’t leave before the fifteenth, right?”

Gui Yin’s brows furrowed. He grabbed Fenghua and began to wander around again. Pacing always helped his thought process.

“The barrier,” Gui Yin murmured. “The barrier…is the only thing keeping the Ghost Realm and Mortal Realm separate at this moment. But Beihua Town is a portal leading into the Ghost Realm now. Would the barrier still be effective during the Ghost Festival?”

Gui Yin clicked his tongue. His fan snapped open as he fanned himself despite the chilling weather. 6wTtSW

Say, he was able to find a way out. Then what? There was still the issue of resentful energy within Beihua Town and its surrounding area. Not only that, what if someone accidentally wandered into Beihua Town and was unable to get out? Was this only a phenomenon that happened because it was the Ghost Month? Or was this something that would happen at any time later.

Gui Yin shook his head. There had been people who came in and out of the matrix before. The possibility that this phenomenon only happened during Ghost Month was half proven. But there was no telling what would happen once the Ghost Festival took place. Would the barrier fold, allowing this area to be completely swallowed by the Ghost Realm?

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Gui Yin pinched the bridge of his nose as his steps slowed.

What was the point of being the most powerful when he couldn’t even think of a way to solve this issue. nrUC R

Gui Yin twisted the turquoise tassel around his finger as he took a deep breath. “I have to calm down…calm down…”

At that moment, a small gash appeared on his hand. Gui Yin’s eyes widened in a mix of surprise and horror. But it didn’t stop there. It continued until it formed a word on the palm of his hand.

“Breathe…?” Gui Yin’s brows furrowed.

The word disappeared and was replaced by something else. 8RvuUj

“Fast…find?” Gui Yin read the words out loud. He let out a soft scoff and folded his fingers into his palm. Even though the temporary pain had vanished, his hand still felt itchy. “What the heck…why’s he mutilating his own hand? Is he bored?”

Despite his muttering, Gui Yin still took a deep breath until his pounding heart calmed. He held the palm of his hand, as if he were holding onto a lifeline.

“Fast” and “find”—did that mean Langxia was looking for him?

He frowned slightly and squeezed his hand. But was Langxia healthy enough to even help him? He sighed and softly shook his head. He couldn’t worry about that now. Besides, there was no telling if Langxia could actually make it into this Beihua Town if Gui Yin couldn’t get out. He should be worrying about himself first rather than others. OKNcP3

He still had nine pills in the jade bottle. The ghosts came out only at night—though this theory may be completely smashed in if he went any further into the Ghost Realm. He could only hope the source of this entire thing remained around the barrier and not any closer. For now, he would operate in the morning while keeping an eye on the sky. When night came, he would rush back to Beihua Town. If he lost track of time, he could take a pill.

He had thirteen days and nine chances to make a mistake.

“Thirteen days, that’s nearly two weeks,” Gui Yin said softly to reassure himself.

After reviewing his plan a few more times, Gui Yin finally took a deep breath and went to look for a place to rest. BUjhg

He found a spot furthest away from the bloodstains and sat down. He leaned his back against the tree and watched as the orange clouds slowly covered up the sickly green moon. He frowned slightly and pulled out a cloak. Although he shouldn’t be able to feel the cold with his level of cultivation, the air that was stained with resentful energy made the coldness seep into his bones.

Once settled, he let out a soft cough. He glanced down at his hand and softly traced his palm. He wished the communication wasn’t so one-sided. If he could, he would tell the man to not come. He could probably handle this situation by himself. Not to mention, Langxia should still be recovering.

For now, he would take a small nap. When he woke up, it would be morning again. It would be much easier to deal with business then.

But reality proved he was far too naïve. O7ZsFf

When the moon rose to the center of the sky, Gui Yin heard a sickening howl.

His eyes snapped open and he looked towards the forest. His grip on his folding fan tightened as he sensed the growing presence of demonic animals. Gui Yin shifted away as quietly as possible and observed them from a nearby tree.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

The creatures were still living. It was more likely that these were wolves that had been contaminated with the pooling resentful energy. They were the monsters that made nearby townspeople and villagers unable to travel in the night.

The mutated wolves were larger than even their demonic beast relatives. The silvery fur had become streaked with red and their teeth seemed sharper and more vicious. Any innate peacefulness or humanity the animal had had vanished, leaving only a feral viciousness behind. GeHMQD

Gui Yin looked around, wondering if he would be able to find a good place to rest when he made eye contact with a crow or…could it be a raven?

The birds from earlier were nothing compared to this one. It was larger than the average crow, but didn’t have the exact features of a raven. Its eyes were red and it wasn’t even the reflection of the sky.

Gui Yin straightened and glanced down below. At some point, the wolves had caught onto his scent and were making their way over, barking up the storm. Faced with a feathery murderer or a pack of hungry wolves, Gui Yin did the only reasonable thing he could think of—jump to the next tree.

  1. the Ghost Realm merged- WAIT!! wait the alliance sent specifically our sect to check out the barrier during the funky time….. im feeling even more Conspiracy Theorist than usual. they werent targetting Gui Yin specifically (or were they….) but with a banquet happening at the same time, it feels like such a “oh while we are all gathered, I just got this sad news thats another peak leader from the used-to-be-powerhouse has fallen to the Ghost Realm. sad!” hmmmmm ….well in the meantime, red-eyed crow (raven? craven?) > monsterous wolves for sure

    • Hehe I’m glad you picked up on the banquet thing 😌 I won’t say anything about the peak Lord bit but I will say, it sure shows the negligence of the upper realm doesn’t it 😶
