In the 85th year of the 70th century of Atlantis, five years have passed since the Mermaid War, while in the human world, it has been fifty years.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

The whereabouts and fate of Davis have always been a lingering knot in my heart, a guilt that I can’t shake off.

This year, I finally implemented my plan to secretly slip out of the passage. With the help of Yukimura and a human friend who remained in contact with him, I researched the records of the naval personnels who had been involved in the Mermaid Stand fifty years ago, and I learned about Davis’s whereabouts. He had miraculously escaped alive from the depths of the sea, returned to the army, and retired after receiving necessary compensation. The last piece of information about him in the database showed that he went to South America and worked in isolation at an observation station near the mouth of the Amazon River (the records indicated that he suffered from severe social anxiety). eKl7EL

I tightened my grip on the long-unused pen in my hand. The pen tip paused for a moment, having crooked handwriting. I started a new line and wrote down a row of words:

Agares, please don’t be angry. I swear to the Mother Nest, as long as I can secretly check whether Davis is safe according to the address recorded in this notebook, I will return to your side immediately. I cannot be certain if he is still there fifty years later, or even if he is alive. At this day and age, he undoubtedly has entered his twilight years, perhaps living his life with those painful memories.

As my former dear friend, whether he recognizes me or not, I have enough reasons to seek out and visit him.

You understood me, right, Agares?

I tore off the bottom half of this sentence, put it inside an empty bottle in the speedboat, sealed it with a cork, and tossed it into the rolling waves of the sea. Then I put away the diary and accelerated the speedboat, watching the bottle gradually being swallowed by the ocean’s waves. Although the chances of Agares receiving my message in a bottle were extremely slim, I still felt somewhat relieved.

As my gaze followed flocks of seagulls gliding across the sky towards the distant horizon, I heard the ethereal calls of birds. The silence of nature brought forth an indescribable sense of loneliness, as if the sea breeze gathered from all directions, urging the overwhelming waves of longing and emotion to well up from the depths of my heart. It felt as intense as if it had seeped into my very bones, making it hard to breathe.

Indeed, a brief separation can rekindle the excitement of a new marriage, and there’s nothing wrong with a little time apart. Besides, it’s been a long time since I’ve experienced this kind of unrestrained feeling of being on my own, and it’s been even longer since I returned to the Earth’s surface, so different from Atlantis.

As night fell, I pulled into a nearby river mouth.

The jungles on both sides of the river are dense and continuous, shrouded in darkness as if a massive, dense cloud had enveloped the surroundings. The wind rustled through the trees. It was a sparsely populated area, and I had found my speedboat near a nearby lighthouse. It had been abandoned there, with no sign of the owner.

I speculated that perhaps it belonged to or had once belonged to Davis. In the past years, maybe just like me at this moment, he had sailed into these waters alone. Holding a DV camera and a diary (I saw some writing in the front part of the diary that resembled Portuguese or Spanish), he recorded his footsteps and his experiences here. In his leisure time, he would have a drink, and was tired at night, he would lie down on this speedboat, drifting with the current, gazing at the night sky, and listening to the sounds of fishes, birds, and insects in the jungle. nRcody

It seems like this kind of life wasn’t so bad, at least it’s a lifestyle I once yearned for as a biology student. Of course, if the lonely days stretch on for too long, it can become unbearable.

I was lost in my thoughts, almost in a daze, but my thoughts involuntarily drifted in another direction.

What if I were to meet Agares in such a situation, as a solitary traveller? We might not experience all the bumpy twists and turns, no conspiracies, no Nazis, no wars—just occasional meetings in the rivers of the tropical rainforest, like a dream. I would capture the image of my merman with my pen and camera, while he would follow my boat, accompanying me through my long and lonely journey, like the encounters described in some of Tagore‘s poems.

—However, Agares might not be as content as I imagined. AmPxBi

I’m certain he could turn my envisioned encounter into a horror story because he would most likely take advantage of the cover of dark and windy night to do some evil things, leaving me with no escape in the jungle. That old sex demon.

Thinking about this, I couldn’t help but feel a bit thirsty, so I quickly shook my head to dispel my unruly thoughts. Sitting up, I cast my gaze upon the dark river water as deep and dense as ink, and thoughts of returning to Agares rose and flowed in my mind like ripples. Perhaps it’s time to go back, Desharow, and find another opportunity to come out here. There will always be a chance.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

With that thought in mind, I started the motor again, turned the boat around, and intended to exit this river mouth. It didn’t feel entirely safe to be in the water here. Who could guarantee that there weren’t any ferocious aquatic monsters lurking in these waters, such as caiman and the like.

But at the same time that the motor was clanging, there suddenly came a faint human voice from not far away. I immediately stopped my hand from pulling the throttle, thinking I had misheard, but in the next second, I heard a clearer call. My heart tightened, and I turned my head to look around. bznoNu

“Help, help, is anyone there?” It was clear that it was in English, shouted out by a woman with all her heart. Right after, I heard a man’s cries as well. They had obviously heard the sound of my motor and were calling out for help. In this desolate and inhabited jungle, these two people must have encountered some terrible accident.

“Hey, wait, I’m coming right away!” I responded immediately.

“We’re here, please bring the boat over, we’re begging you!” The man shouted even louder.

I turned the boat and headed toward the sound. The voices were coming from a dense forest next to the riverbank, and as I ventured into the thick forest shadows, I realised that half of this forest had been submerged by the rising tide. What used to be the riverbank had turned into a watery maze. With my good night vision, I spotted two figures not far away, clinging to a large tree. Several metres away from them was an overturned boat, its stern deformed as if it had suffered a heavy impact. In this environment, there were only two possibilities that could have caused the boat to look like this: one, the boat accidentally collided with a tree; two, the boat was attacked by a large crocodile or hippopotamus. Judging by their appearance, they were either staying away from the water out of fear or there was some danger in the water. OfkWFB

“What happened to you?” I crouched down, cautiously scanning the surroundings, and carefully navigated through the forest towards them.

“There are crocodiles here! Please, come quickly! We’ll die here!” The woman’s voice had changed with fear. Both of them stared at me in the darkness, their bodies trembling. I should be thankful that they couldn’t see my appearance; otherwise, they would likely be just as afraid of me.

“Don’t be afraid, stay calm.” I approached the tree where they were clinging slowly. When I was just a little over two metres away from them, my path was blocked by something floating in the water, like a vine or water plant. I quickly picked up an oar nearby and pushed aside the object in the water. However, I was immediately horrified by what I saw in the water——it was a headless corpse, badly mangled and chewed to pieces.

“Damn it!” I yelled, sitting back in the boat. Overhead, a dark shadow flashed as the man and woman jumped down from the tree and onto the boat. Their sudden movements caused the boat to rock violently from side to side, and I nearly tumbled into the water. Thankfully, I managed to grab onto the side of the boat. The woman huddled at the bow, too terrified to move, while the man, with a look of terror in his eyes, scanned their surroundings. He rushed to the stern to find the throttle for the motor. “Quick, let’s get out of here. That giant crocodile ate all our companions! All of them… it’s nearby.” QehWRb

It was at that moment that I finally saw the man’s face clearly, and it was a face I found particularly familiar. I was left flabbergasted, staring at him in shock, and I uttered the long-forgotten name in a whisper, “Da——vi——s!”

What an incredible and unbelievable coincidence! I had just happened to rescue Davis here. Could this be a chance at redemption that the Heavens had given me?

But immediately, I realised that this was an impossible thing. Fifty years had passed, and there was no way Davis could still have a youthful appearance. To confirm this thought, I grabbed the man’s collar and stared at his face. In terms of time, he could only be Davis’s son. The woman, on the other hand, seemed older, possibly his mother. Good Gracious!

Crash——” wYdykm

My heart was filled with a mixture of emotions, and at that moment, I couldn’t describe the shock and joy in my heart. But there was no time for me to be amazed. The sound of rushing water, approaching from a distance, came straight at our boat. Davis and I both tightened our grips on the throttle and yanked it. The bow of the boat struggled to turn back in the direction from which I had come, but in a flash, the boat emitted a thunderous sound, as if struck by a heavy hammer. It lurched to the left, and I was suddenly catapulted into the water!

Damn it!

The moment I fell into the water, a lightning-fast triangular shape appeared in the water, rushing straight towards me. I immediately spread my wings, shot out of the water, and clung to the trunk of a nearby tree. From the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a massive black shadow passing beneath me, its bloodthirsty jaws narrowly missing the tips of my wings. I clung tightly to the tree trunk, and when I turned around, I saw the speedboat speeding away in haste, the sound of the engine gradually fading as it disappeared into the darkness.

“Hey!” I climbed up the tree trunk and shouted, realising that they were probably frightened by the sight of the crocodile and me, and had obeyed their survival instincts. It was nothing strang; it was excusable. If it were me, I would probably choose to save my life and escape immediately as well. I sighed. After shock and frustration passed through my mind, there was a sense of relief. This time, I had at least confirmed that Davis had descendants, and his later life wasn’t too tragic. Perhaps it was fate’s way of making amends and settling scores. My lingering worries and regrets could finally be laid to rest. Compared to this, the current difficulty didn’t really matter. Could a single crocodile trap me here and make me its prey? FViDoT

I let out a long breath and glanced down at the water. A shadow, about four to five metres long, was lying quietly on the pitch-black surface, its bulb-sized emerald-green eyes gleaming with hungry light, staring motionlessly at me.

Though I knew it couldn’t reach and bite me at the moment, a chill crept into my heart, making my hair stand on end. If there was only one crocodile here that is easy to deal with, I could jump into the water and challenge it in a speed race; I believed I could easily leave it far behind. However, if there were several, or even dozens, the situation wouldn’t be so optimistic.

Perhaps I should wait until dawn. The water here might recede by then…

As I was thinking about this, it was as if the Heavens decided to play a prank on me. There was a distant rumble in the sky, and within minutes, raindrops the size of beans began to fall through the gaps in the leaves, carrying an ominous feeling as they pelted my body. H4RCI0

“Damn it!” I couldn’t help but curse aloud, knowing that I couldn’t just sit here and wait for death.

At that very moment, several massive dark shadows appeared in the water, circling like vultures scenting blood, around the roots of the tree. They were waiting for the water to rise to the level where I was perched, so they could swarm in and tear me to pieces.

Regardless, the top priority was to leave the jungle as quickly as possible and get closer to the riverbank. The maze-like terrain here would limit my swimming speed and make me vulnerable to attacks by the crocodiles. With these thoughts in mind, I cautiously made my way along the winding and intersecting tree branches, moving through the forest like a monkey. However, my agility was far from that of a monkey; perhaps I was more like a raccoon in this situation.

I kept my eyes on the water’s surface as I moved my body, moving cautiously and with great difficulty, feeling like I was walking on a tightrope. I was afraid that one misstep would send me plummeting into the gaping jaws of the crocodiles. It was ironic that after being nearly invincible in Atlantis, I had returned to Earth only to become trapped prey. EAzBrX

I only hoped to escape this situation on my own as quickly as possible, without letting Agares know. Otherwise, he would be like a stern father, never allowing me a second chance to go out on my own.

Translator’s note:- I promise I’m not an evil person but really guys this chapter is sooooooo freaking big. It’s like 4 times the average length of a Mr. Dior’s single chapter. Like this is the biggest chapter, I have done so far so please have  some mercy on me. And meanwhile please pray for Desharow’s chrysanthemum after Agares finds him. And after alllll these years, you’d think Desharow would learn from his mistakes but no, never; and poor boy’s luck is blacker than the Blackhole. And our group’s name still persists(Don’t be like Desharow Wallace, THINK AND USE YOUR BRAIN!). P.S. We love him, no hate, but just the Author always fucks him up!

For some reasons it was Da er xi instead of Da wen xi which is davis’ name, maybe a mistake on author’s end
