Frowning he dared not sniff, but only felt nauseous, his reaction slower than normal in shock.

They fully stop their ruckus as the girl’s whimpers died in her throat, and no further sound came from the girl’s place. Someone from the neighboring house leaned in atop their balcony to look inside, and whatever they saw behind the curtain made them pale with fright.
Looking at his reaction, the people in the alley and the shacked houses above, everyone stopped speaking, silently huddling on the edge of the alley or slinking back in their homes with fear written on their faces.

Shen Yu is really so cute and also unconfident but Kai is straightforward so it should be fine.
