The winter sun was short, like the tail of a roe deer. The late afternoon’s low sunlight seeped through the car’s window. Despite the freezing temperatures outside, the interior of the car was warm. There was a faint scent of air freshener mixed with the smell of sunlight.
It was before the end of the day, so the roads were relatively empty. Inheon, driving leisurely, leaned his elbow on the windowsill and said, “Do you like this car? Should I buy another one?”
Juwon, feeling a bit drowsy, responded with a small yawn, “I do like it, but there’s no point in buying a new one.”
“Why? Because you’ll have to get used to it?”
“I like driving in your car because it makes me feel like I’m with you somehow.”
“Isn’t it cheating to say that while I’m driving…?”
Inheon gazed at Juwon. The winter sun, filtered through the window, painted his side profile. His long eyelashes partially veiled his light brown irises, which gleamed like precious gems.
He couldn’t restrain himself any longer. The delicate flutter of his eyelashes came to a halt. Like a glass tube made in a vacuum state, the airflow paused.
Inheon leaned forward and kissed Juwon. From the forehead that drew a soft curve to his straight nose bridge, full lips, to the tip of his smooth chin. His lips brushed against him, uninterrupted by the friction of the air. The restless sensation made it feel as if gravity had disappeared and his heart was rising up.
One minute was too short.
“Hm…?”
Juwon blinked. He subconsciously brought a hand to his face at the strange sensation. A warm sense of déjà vu lingered on the tip of his nose and lips.
The inside of the car was still warm. There weren’t any changes on the road seen outside the car window either. Inheon continued to drive leisurely, his arm resting on the windowsill, just as before. However, Juwon, based on his accumulated experiences, could sense that something was amiss.
“You suddenly froze time again…”
“We can’t get into any accidents, you know.”
Juwon shook his head as he looked at the top hunter, who had now fed the Hunter Creed to the dogs. With each passing moment, Inheon grew more shameless, so he lost the will to talk back now.
“Yeah, safe driving is important…”
An old pop song played on the radio. Amidst the soothing melody, casual chatter discussing things such as how jujube snacks were produced and their flavours came and went. Eventually, the seat next to him fell silent.
Juwon had drifted into a slumber. Before he knew it, the sun was setting beyond the car window, casting a warm evening glow upon them. The interior of the car was bathed in a brilliant scarlet light. Inheon switched off the radio.
Only the sound of even breathing could be heard within the car.
Whenever he stopped at a traffic light, Inheon would stare at Juwon. It all felt somewhat surreal to him—his beauty, as well as the fact that he was naturally by his side.
Despite the laughter they shared when they faced each other, Inheon found himself overwhelmed by the unexpected and excessive happiness. Though living happily was his duty… He felt anxiety creep up from beneath his feet, and he wondered if it could be such a natural thing, if he had the right to enjoy it.
Even though it seemed like he could finally root himself on solid ground, there were moments when he felt like he was experiencing land sickness, as if his feet were being tossed. Even though it felt beyond him to reach his hand out and be able to touch something, he felt nervous, as if it’d scatter like a mirage if he really did touch it.
“Lee Juwon…”
He wasn’t worried about Juwon changing. It wasn’t that he changed, it was just that he returned to his original self. Besides, it no longer mattered what he was like.
However, there were moments when he was afraid that Juwon would awaken from his slumber and no longer remember him. Like how he had looked at him as if he were a stranger on the day of their first interview.
Despite getting in the car to get the most speed possible, he drove as slowly as he could. However, before he knew it, ‘their house’ was in view. The 47th floor that Juwon had purchased at triple the price and the 49th floor they had filled with household items together.
“…I like you too much,” Inheon suddenly whispered. Even though he wouldn’t be able to hear it because he was asleep, the feelings that had grown much bigger than before escaped on their own.
