    • There was never any forced element to the book – the “submissive” part refers to the Emperor submitting to his Empress / husband submitting to the wife instead of the other way around as would normally be expected. It’s a direct translation of the Chinese title “Jun Wei Xia”. “Jun” is used to refer to the Husband or the Emperor, and XCJ is both in this case. “Wei Xia” literally means he is “below”, and in the context, the person he is below is LJ, and he is therefore submitting to LJ. Hence the title was translated as “The Submissive Emperor” – that’s the closest I can get in English without it sounding weird. I suppose a translation of the title that would convey the meaning of “Jun Wei Xia” would be “The Emperor/Husband who is a Bottom Instead of a Top” but that’s very unwieldy, so not in favour of that. 🙂

  9. I can’t remember… who is Xiao Chengjun’s birth mom? I know that technically, all the children in the harem are supposed to be the empress’ children, but XCJ, his sickly brother, and this 4th prince appear to have been raised by the side of the empress, as his own sons. Did their mother’s die and so that’s why the empress raised them?

    • Xiao Chengjun and Xiao Chengjin (sickly brother) both have the same birth mom: Su Fei (Fei is her title.) She died when they were both little (possibly giving birth?) Her dad is the prefectural governor of Yuezhou, and he sent Xiao Chengjun a letter and wedding gift at one point (he wasn’t able to come to the wedding because it was so rushed.)

      I don’t think 4th prince’s mom has been mentioned yet.

    Wow I feel really bad for Xiao Chengzheng. Ji Zhuo having his dad give Xiao Chengjun those maps is a pretty clear indicator of who he really supports. So he’s probably just spending time with Xiao Chengzheng to throw off people’s suspicion.

    Xiao Chengzheng is probably going to end up as cannon fodder and it’s not surprising when you consider that he doesn’t seem to have anyone to warn him about getting too big for his britches.

    • Xiao Chengzheng is only 14 (I think?)! While he’s in line for the throne, he’s still too young to be the Emperor, and he doesn’t seem to want to be, unlike the Third Prince. XCZ appears to just be a kid who’s lacked affection/attention due to his elder brother being the crown prince. Really sad tbh :/
